OKYO Pharma CEO Gary Jacob joined Steve Darling from Proactive to announce a strategic decision to accelerate the clinical development of urcosimod, its lead candidate for Neuropathic Corneal Pain. CEO Gary Jacob shared the update in an interview with Proactive, highlighting the company's decision to terminate its ongoing Phase 2 trial early in order to access and analyze masked trial data that could inform the next stage of clinical advancement. The Phase 2 trial, being conducted at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, MA, was initially designed as a single-site study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of urcosimod in patients suffering from NCP—a debilitating and poorly understood ocular condition. To date, 17 patients have successfully completed the trial. All of them were diagnosed with chronic, long-term NCP and had failed multiple prior therapies, positioning this cohort as a challenging yet highly relevant population for evaluating urcosimod's potential. According to Jacob, the trial has attracted significant attention from NCP sufferers, reinforcing the high unmet need in this patient population. NCP is characterized by severe ocular pain, light sensitivity, and discomfort that can radiate to the face or head. Its exact etiology remains uncertain but is believed to involve nerve damage and persistent inflammation of the cornea. Currently, no approved therapies exist specifically for NCP, and most patients rely on off-label or palliative treatments with limited success. OKYO's decision to close the trial early reflects a proactive strategic shift, allowing the company to refine its clinical development path and expedite next steps. The company is preparing to launch a multicenter trial, which will include multiple clinical sites and a broader patient population, enhancing the statistical robustness and generalizability of the data. As OKYO prepares for this next clinical phase, the company remains focused on its core mission of delivering innovative therapies for underserved ophthalmic conditions. The accelerated pathway for urcosimod underscores its potential to reshape the treatment landscape for neuropathic eye disorders. #proactiveinvestors #okyopharmalimited #nasdaq #okyo #Urcosimod #NeuropathicCornealPain #BiotechNews #ClinicalTrials #FDAapproval #Ophthalmology #DrugDevelopment #CompassionateUse #EyeHealth
Are we educating young people as consumers? Have educational institutions become service providers in the consumer economy of educational products? Or are we educating young people as citizens - of their local communities, nations and the planet? If so what does that mean for how we engage them in the processes of living and working together, making meaningful contributions and learning important things as they go. I'm not sure that that looks much like what we're currently doing in most schools around the world. Jon Alexander is on a mission to help a new story to emerge about how people all over the world are getting involved in 'citizening' - that is, thinking of citizen as a verb and a local participatory responsibility, rather than citizen as a noun that you claim rights to.Jon began his career with success in advertising, winning the prestigious Big Creative Idea of the Year before making a dramatic change. Driven by a deep need to understand the impact on society of 3,000 commercial messages a day, he gathered three Masters degrees, exploring consumerism and its alternatives from every angle. In 2014, he co-founded the New Citizenship Project, a strategy and innovation consultancy that aims to shift the dominant story of the individual in society from Consumer to Citizen. NCP's client list includes The Guardian, the European Central Bank, and the European Journalism Centre. They have partnered with the BBC, Amnesty International, National Trust, the British Film Institute, Tate galleries, the National Union of Students, YouGov, the Centre for Public Impact, the Food Standards Agency and the Food Ethics Council. OKYO Pharma CEO Gary Jacob joined Steve Darling from Proactive to share a significant advancement in the company's ongoing drug development efforts. The company has successfully demonstrated that urcosimod—formerly known as OK-101—remains stable for more than two and a half years in single-use ampoules, which are used for patient administration. This milestone is a crucial step forward in ensuring the long-term viability of the drug as it progresses through clinical trials. Urcosimod is currently being evaluated in a Phase 2b clinical trial, which is a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-masked study involving 48 patients. The trial is focused on assessing the drug's effectiveness in treating neurotrophic keratopathy (NCP), a serious and progressive degenerative eye disease. Jacob emphasized that achieving success in clinical development extends beyond obtaining positive clinical trial data. A crucial aspect of regulatory approval includes meeting the rigorous Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Controls (CMC) requirements set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). By demonstrating long-term stability, OKYO Pharma has strengthened its regulatory submission package, addressing an essential factor in the drug's future approval and commercialization. The company recently completed Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) stability assay testing of single-use ampoules containing urcosimod in an ophthalmic solution. The results were highly promising—ampoules stored under refrigerated conditions maintained stability for over two and a half years, while initial three-month data from samples stored at room temperature showed potency levels at or above 100%. These findings reinforce confidence in urcosimod's shelf life and its potential for real-world clinical use. As OKYO Pharma continues to advance urcosimod through the regulatory and clinical development process, this stability milestone represents a critical achievement in its journey toward providing an effective treatment for patients suffering from NCP. #proactiveinvestors #okyopharmalimited #nasdaq #okyo

After the Maha Vikas Aghadi's dismal performance in the Maharashtra Assembly elections, the Shiv Sena (UBT) in Pune is likely to insist that the party contest the long-delayed civic polls alone. The city units of the Congress and the NCP, however, are keen on continuing the alliance. Elections to the Pune Municipal Corporation were last held in 2017. With the new government set to be sworn in soon, the long-delayed civic elections are likely to be held in the next few months. Though the MVA enjoyed success in the Lok Sabha elections by winning 31 of the 48 seats in the state, it only won 46 seats in the Assembly elections. Despite the poor performance, however, Prashant Jagtap, Pune NCP chief, said that he believed the Congress, NCP and Shiv Sena (UBT) should contest the PMC elections as MVA.This was the Catch Up on 3 Things by The Indian Express.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra, the Maha Vikas Agadi (MVA) won 30 out of the 48 seats, while the Maha Yuti could get only 17 seats. But in the just concluded Assembly elections, the Maha Yuti won a landslide, with 235 out of the 288 seats. The Maha Yuti alliance's main constituent, the BJP alone won 132 seats, with the other two, the (Ajit Pawar-led) NCP and the (Eknath Shinde-led) Shiv Sena garnering 41 and 57 seats respectively. None of the MVA parties could win enough seats to even qualify for the position of leader of the Opposition – the first time this has happened in six decades. The Shiva Sena (Uddhav Bal Thackeray) got 20 seats, the Congress won 16, and the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) won 10 seats respectively. So, what changed so dramatically in a matter of five months – from June to November 2024 -- that the Maha Yuti swept the state? How serious are the MVA's complaints that question a post-5pm voter surge and the data mismatches between votes polled and counted? Guest: Vinaya Deshpande, The Hindu's Maharashtra Chief of Bureau. The Opposition did not press for a division of votes and pro-tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab declared Birla as elected, saying the “ayes have it”. With Birla's election, Mahtab said, the other motions to propose and second the candidature of K Suresh became infructuous. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who the Congress has named Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, congratulated Birla as he took charge.Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal addressed the Court asserting that CBI sources fabricated information in the media. He clarified, quote “I have not made any statement holding Sisodia responsible. Yesterday, I made it clear that neither AAP nor Sisodia can be blamed.” Unquote. These developments follow arguments in court regarding the CBI's arrest of the AAP leader. The Supreme Court today, allowed him to withdraw his plea against the High Court's interim stay on the trial court's bail order in the ED case.A day after Nationalist Congress Party (SP) chief Sharad Pawar said that his party's doors would remain open to MLAs who had sided with Ajit Pawar, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) hit back today, saying that it showed the desperation of a party struggling to find leaders to contest the upcoming Assembly elections in Maharashtra. NCP spokesperson Umesh Patil told The Indian Express today, quote, “Sharad Pawar saheb's party is saddled with a handful of MLAs and he is now looking for leaders who will contest on its ticket,” Unquote.According to new data published in the Lancet Global Health, half the adult Indian population does not meet the World Health Organisation's guidelines on sufficient physical activity. More women (57 per cent) than men (42 per cent men) are physically inactive. Most alarmingly, the prevalence of insufficient physical activity among Indian adults has risen sharply from 22.3 per cent in 2000 to 49.4 per cent in 2022. This means unchecked, 60 per cent of our population would be unfit by 2030 and at risk of disease from not doing enough physical activity.WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange returned to his homeland Australia aboard a charter jet today, hours after pleading guilty to obtaining and publishing US military secrets in a deal with Justice Department prosecutors that concludes a drawn-out legal saga. The criminal case of international intrigue, which had played out for years, came to a surprise end in a most unusual setting with Assange, entering his plea in a US district court in Saipan, the capital of the Northern Mariana Islands. The American commonwealth in the Pacific is relatively close to Assange's native Australia and accommodated his desire to avoid entering the continental United States. This was the Catch-Up on the 3 Things by The Indian Express.

Darren Brady Nelson joins Gene Tunny to discuss the evolution of competition policy in Australia over the past few decades. Darren draws on his experience as an economist in the NSW Treasury and the Queensland Competition Authority. Gene and Darren reflect on the successes of the original National Competition Policy reforms and assess the more limited scope of the subsequent competition policy review. Darren analyzes CPI data to understand rising living costs and argues for reducing government interventions. The conversation also covers unintended policy consequences (e.g. fraud in disability services provision), the US Founding Fathers' vision for limited government, and debates around the appropriate roles and sizes of government in Australia and the US. However, the Bharatiya Janata Party suffered a major setback as it fell short of a majority – with 240 seats – on its own as it was heavily dependent on alliance partners such as the TDP and JD(U) to secure 272 seats required to form the government. The Opposition INDIA bloc combined by the Congress, the Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won a total of 232 seats. The Congress got back on its feet with 99 seats and the SP gave a stunning show by winning 37 seats from a mere 5 seats in Uttar Pradesh in 2019. The TMC won 29 seats in West Bengal while the DMK had leads in 22 seats. The Sharad Pawar-led NCP won 7 seats and the Shiv Sena of Uddhav Thackeray secured 9 seats. In Bihar, the RJD was ahead in 4 constituencies and the AAP and JMM in 3.In Odisha, the BJP is all set to form a majority government of its own for the first time, winning 78 out of 147 seats in the assembly elections of the coastal state. The outcome brings to an end the five-term reign of Naveen Patnaik's BJD, which managed to retain only 51 seats this time. Patnaik was eyeing to become the longest serving Chief Minister in India, but fell short by 76 days.Actor Kangana Ranaut, who recently won the Mandi Lok Sabha seat on a BJP ticket, was allegedly slapped by a woman constable of the CISF at the security area of Chandigarh airport. She further stated that Taiwan is an inalienable part of the territory of the People's Republic of China. This was the Catch-Up on the 3 Things by The Indian Express.
This week, Newslaundry's Abhinandan Sekhri, Raman Kirpal, Jayashree Arunachalam and Prateek Goyal are joined by journalist Faye D'Souza. On the polls in Maharashtra, Faye says there is “a lot of goodwill” for the Thackerays. “Eknath Shinde does not enjoy that goodwill because of what was done to the Thackerays.” She adds that there was confusion about election symbols because of the split within the NCP and the Shiv Sena. “A lot of voters did not know the difference between their symbols.”The panel then discusses the elections in Delhi and the alleged Swati Maliwal assault case. Raman breaks down the arithmetic of Delhi polls. “In 2019, the BJP's margin of victory was 25 percent and above.” Abhinandan says that the coming together of the AAP and the Congress is “statistically not enough” to defeat the BJP in the national capital. On the Porsche car crash incident in Pune, Jayashree says the story is getting traction because it “appeals very much to India's upper middle class sensibilities”. Talking about the bail granted to the accused, she adds that all said and done, “we should not lose sight of the fact that any juvenile should get bail”.This and a whole lot more. This is the Catch Up on 3 Things for the Indian Express and I'm Niharika NandaIt's the 14th of March and here are the top stories of the day.The panel led by former President Ram Nath Kovind on simultaneous elections has recommended that the government implement a "one-time transitory measure." This measure would require the Union government to identify an "appointed date" immediately after a Lok Sabha election. Subsequently, all state assemblies that go to poll after this date would have their terms expire with Parliament. Among the 47 political parties that expressed their opinions on simultaneous elections, 32 supported the idea, while 15 opposed it. The high-level committee led by PM Modi today selected retired IAS officers Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu as the new Election Commissioners.
