Rajnath clarified that Rahul had misquoted the Army Chief, reaffirming the government's stance on the border situation, and emphasising that the military continues to address the issue diplomatically.In another headline making news, the United States has started deporting Indian migrants as part of US President Donald Trump's immigration enforcement strategy. A C-17 aircraft carrying 205 Indian nationals departed from San Antonio, Texas. A US embassy spokesperson in Delhi confirmed that the deportation, emphasised the administration's stance on tightening immigration laws and sends a message against illegal migration, which affects an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States.In news from the national capital, Delhi Police filed a case against Chief Minister Atishi for violating prohibitory orders a day before the Delhi Assembly elections. Atishi, who is the AAP candidate from Kalkaji, was reportedly involved in a gathering with party volunteers in Govindpuri. Police claimed that despite the requests to disperse under the Model Code of Conduct, the crowd persisted. Two AAP workers were also charged for allegedly assaulting a police officer during the incident.In global news today, China announced retaliatory tariffs on United States imports after the US imposed a 10 per cent tariff on Chinese goods. Beijing will levy 10-15 per cent tariffs on US products including crude oil, agricultural machinery, and liquefied natural gas. Coal and LNG imports will face a 15 per cent tariff, while items like pickup trucks and large-engine cars will incur a 10 per cent tariff. Jaishankar was scheduled to brief on India-China relations.The Supreme Court on Monday expressed its concern over DMK leader Senthil Balaji being reinstated as minister in the M K Stalin-led government in Tamil Nadu shortly after it granted him bail in a money laundering case. The court was hearing a plea that sought to recall the September 26 order granting bail to Balaji on the ground that his reinstatement would put witnesses under pressure. The Supreme Court had granted him bail on the ground that there was no likelihood of the trial beginning anytime soon. Justice A S Oka questioned quote, “We grant bail and the next day you go and become Minister? Anybody will be bound to be under the impression that now with your position as a senior Cabinet Minister witnesses will be under pressure. What is this going on?” unquote.Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has been formally invited to visit India by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the dates for his visit will be set in early 2025. This will be Putin's first visit to India in the wake of the Russia-Ukraine war that started in February 2022. Putin's India visit will come as part of a laid-down structure between the two countries for reciprocal annual visits by their leaders. The announcement about Putin's India visit comes days after the election of US President Donald Trump, who is also expected to visit India next year for the QUAD Summit.Noida authorities on Monday issued a traffic advisory stating Delhi Police and Gautam Buddha Nagar Police will put up barriers and increase security on all the borders adjoining Gautam Buddha Nagar to Delhi, in light of a farmers protest march. The owners of the basement are among the five arrested people, including the coaching centre's CEO, Abhishek Gupta, and coordinator, Deshpal Singh. All the five accused are expected to be produced in court on Monday.Days after three UPSC aspirants died when the basement of their coaching centre flooded in the National Capital, Rajya Sabha chairman allowed a short-term discussion on the matter after the question hour. While the chair did not agree to suspend the proceedings on the House for the discussion, members of the opposition applauded that the chair allowed for the discussion under another rule, adding that they hoped their request for similar discussions on NEET paper leak and Manipur violence will also be allowed.Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Monday hit out at the Union Budget of 2024-25 on Monday, calling it a ‘chakravyuh' created by the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Congress leader said the ‘chakravyuh' that has captured India has three forces — the idea of monopoly capital and concentration of financial power; institutions and agencies such as the CBI, ED and IT department; and the political executive. Gandhi's reference was to the Mahabharat, according to which Abhimanyu was killed in a ‘chakravyuh' — a multi-tiered maze and formation — in which he was trapped. He further said the chakravyuh looks like a lotus (the BJP symbol).Days after some students from Nirmala College in Kerala's Muvattupuzha held protests demanding that they be allotted a room at the college to offer namaz, a prominent body of Islamic scholars have asked the students to desist from making such demands that could “create hatred” Dakshina Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama general secretary Muhammed Thoufeeq Moulavi called the controversy “unfortunate”. Last Friday, a group of girls at Nirmala College in Muvattupuzha held protests demanding a room to offer their prayers but the college management had turned them down saying they were “free” to offer namaz at a mosque some 200 metres away. Significantly, the college is run by the Catholic Church.A passenger train carrying about 800 parrengers collided with a Kamaz truck, killing at least two and injuring up to 100 people on Monday, Russian media outlets reported, according to Reuters. As per the report, eight carriages were derailed, some of the carriages lay twisted and battered beside the railway track, they said. His predecessor, Champai Soren, met the Governor on Wednesday to submit his resignation after the ruling coalition's 45 MLAs elected Hemant Soren as their leader. Hemant Soren had resigned as Chief Minister five months ago, prior to his arrest on money laundering charges, after which Champai Soren had assumed the role.On Wednesday, the Union Government defended the Hindi nomenclature of the three new criminal laws that came into effect on Monday before the Madras High Court, asserting the constitutional legitimacy of the names against allegations of unconstitutionality. The three new laws — The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita, and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam passed in Parliament last December replaced the Indian Penal Code, the Criminal Procedure Code, and the Indian Evidence Act respectively.The Delhi Police stepped up security outside the house of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi after receiving intelligence inputs about possible threats from right-wing groups. This action follows Rahul Gandhi's maiden speech as the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, where he took a swipe at the BJP, saying that those who call themselves Hindus are engaged in “violence and hate.” BJP leaders reacted sharply to the remark, alleging that Rahul Gandhi insulted Hindus.The Lebanese Hezbollah group reported launching over 200 rockets at several military bases in Israel on Thursday in retaliation for a strike that killed one of its senior commanders. The attack by the Iran-backed militant group is one of the largest in the ongoing conflict along the Lebanon-Israel border, with tensions escalating in recent weeks. The case relates to Atishi's accusations that the BJP attempted to poach Aam Aadmi Party MLAs. Atishi has been ordered to appear in court on the 29th of June. Meanwhile, the court has denied the bail plea of Umar Khalid, who is accused in the ‘larger conspiracy' case related to the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots. Khalid, who was booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), had earlier told the Delhi court that other accused facing graver allegations than him were out on bail as well as people allegedly involved in similar activities were not even made an accused by the Delhi Police.At least 15 people have been killed in multiple landslides across Aizawl today. This included 11 deaths in a stone quarry collapse, with Mizoram witnessing storms caused by Cyclone Remal. Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma told The Indian Express that more bodies continue to be trapped in the debris. The state government sanctioned an amount of Rs 15 crore for relief work, and approved Rs 4 lakh as ex-gratia payment for the families of the deceased.A sessions court in Mumbai today sentenced two colleagues to life imprisonment for the murder of Kirti Vyas, a finance manager at BBlunt salon in Andheri, who was reported missing by her family six years ago. The Sessions Judge found Siddhesh Shantaram Tamhankar and a woman colleague guilty of murder, kidnapping for murder, wrongful restraint, and destruction of evidence, among other sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).The Punjab and Haryana High Court today acquitted Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and four others in the 2002 Ranjit Singh murder case. A division bench allowed the appeals filed by Ram Rahim Singh, Jasbir Singh, Sabdil Singh, Krishan Lal and Avtar Singh against the conviction order by a CBI court in connection with the murder of the Dera manager Ranjit Singh. The high court has yet to release the detailed order.India announced immediate relief assistance worth US$ 1 million to Papua New Guinea in the wake of the devastating landslide. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi expressed deep condolences and conveyed India's readiness to extend all possible support and assistance to the Pacific island country in its time of difficulty. This is without counting the sixth phase. We are in a comfortable position. This time, we went to the people with 10 years of track record and 25 years of a powerfully positive agenda.” Unquote.In the Pune Porsche crash that resulted in the deaths of two young engineers, the Pune police said that doctors of Sassoon General Hospital the blood sample of the minor driver in a dustbin and sent another person's blood to the forensic lab. Dr Ajay Taware, the head of the Sassoon Hospital's forensic medicine department, and Dr Shrihari Harnol have been arrested for allegedly changing the blood sample of the minor boy.The Pune Police Commissioner said the second blood sample of the minor was sent to another government-run hospital in Aundh as a preventive measure.The Gujarat government today suspended 7 officials for negligence and dereliction of duty in the Rajkor gaming zone fire incident. The seven officials included two police inspectors, two executive engineers, one assistant engineer, one town planner and a fire station officer. An official release from the state government said the officers were suspended following instructions from Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, who visited the Rajkot fire site on Sunday. It said the officers allowed “the gaming zone to open without due approvals and thereby showed utter carelessness and committing dereliction of duty”.The National Commission of Women today directed the Delhi Police to obtain call records of all relevant individuals in the Swati Maliwal assault case investigation, including those of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. In a post on social media platform X, the NCW also mandated strict action against individuals issuing rape and death threats to Maliwal. Earlier, the Tiz Hazari court heard Kejriwal's aide, Bibhav Kumar's bail plea in relation to the alleged Swati Maliwal assault case.JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna who is facing sex abuse allegations spoke out a month after the case surfaced, saying that he will return to India and appear before the Special Investigation Team on 31st of May. In a video statement aired on a local channel, Prajwal said  he will cooperate with the investigation and will respond to it (charges). The Election Commission had said the provisional turnout at 11.45 pm on Monday was 67.25%, however, the final turnout would be announced today. Significantly, the turnout in Srinagar, which was the one seat in Jammu and Kashmir that went to polls on Monday, recorded a turnout of 37.98%, which was the highest since 1996.Bhavesh Bhinde, owner of a hoarding in Ghatkopar that collapsed amid rains was arrested on Thursday by the crime branch from Rajasthan's Udaipur. The director of Ego Media Private Limited, which had the contract for the hoarding on a 10-year lease, was absconding since the incident took place. The death toll from the giant hoarding collapse in Ghatkopar area of Mumbai touched 16, after the bodies of the two more victims were retrieved. The search and rescue operations at the site have been called off. While the police had said that Maliwal went to the Civil Lines police station, she had not filed an official complaint. While AAP MP Sanjay Singh said that strict action would be taken against Kumar, National Commission for Women (NCW) summoned him for a hearing in the matter.South Africa asked the top UN court on Thursday to order a halt to the Rafah offensive as part of its case in The Hague accusing Israel of genocide in the Gaza Strip, saying the Palestinian people faced "ongoing annihilation". The reason the court gave: the Delhi Police failed to inform Purkayastha the grounds of his arrest before taking him into custody. The ruling is significant because it emphasises that proper procedure and due process are the guardrails against arbitrary action, even in stringent terror cases. Purkayastha was arrested on 3rd of October 2023 by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police, who alleged that Newsclick received money for pro-China propaganda.One of the 14 people who were trapped after a lift collapsed at a copper mine in Rajasthan's Neem Ka Thana district passed away today, hours after all of them were rescued. Besides workers, members of a Vigilance team from Kolkata and senior officials of the Khetri Copper Corporation were also trapped following the collapse on Tuesday night. The incident took place in Hindustan Copper Limited's Kolihan mine, located in the Khetri area. Ambulances have been rushed to the spot and doctors have been asked to be prepared for any emergency.While reacting to the warning issued by the United States a day after India and Iran signed a 10-year contract to operate the strategic Iranian port of Chabahar,  External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar today, asserted that the agreement will benefit the entire region. He said, “We have a long association with the Chabahar port but we could never sign a long-term agreement. The reason being there were various problems on the Iranian end, it's a JV (joint venture), partners changed, conditions changed. Finally, we were able to sort this out and get the long-term agreement done. A long-term agreement is necessary, because without it, you cannot really improve the port operations, which we believe will benefit the entire region.” Unquote.Coming down heavily on the Uttarakhand government, the Supreme Court today said it was “at pains to say that the state's approach in controlling forest fires has been lackadaisical,”. It added that though action plans were prepared and finalised, no steps have been taken for their implementation. Hearing a plea raising the issue of forest fires in Uttarakhand, the top court also directed the Chief Secretary to be present before it on 17th of May. Flagging a huge vacancy in the state's forest department, the Supreme Court said the issue needs to be addressed.As Israel-Hamas war continues to rage on, the Israeli Defence Forces claimed to eliminate Hussain Ibrahim Mekky, a senior field commander in Hezbollah, by an IAF aircraft strike overnight. The IDF made the announcement in an 'operational update' on its official X handle and claimed that Mekky was responsible for "various acts of terrorism" against Israel. Additionally, 28 assembly seats of Odisha are also witnessing polls in this phase.The AIMIM lodged a complaint with the Election Commission of India after a video emerged of BJP's Lok Sabha candidate for Hyderabad, K Madhavi Latha, at a polling booth, checking the identity documents of burqa-clad women and asking them to lift their veil. Latha also warned polling officials to allow voting only after properly checking ID cards. She later claimed that there were discrepancies in the voter list and that the names of several voters were missing. The Hyderabad Collector has stated that a case has been filed against Latha at the Malakpet Police Station.The Supreme Court today fixed 17th of May as the date to hear Hemant Soren's petition challenging his arrest on money laundering charges in a land scam-related case. The former Jharkhand chief minister referred to the SC order granting interim bail until June 1 to DElhi Chief Minister Kejriwal, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on money laundering charges in connection with the Delhi excise policy case so that he could campaign for the Lok Sabha elections.The Delhi Police today said AAP Rajya Sabha member Swati Maliwal made two calls to the Police Control Room alleging assault at the Chief Minister's house in Civil Lines.DCP (North) Manoj Meena said, quote, “Swati Maliwal called the PCR at 9.34 am stating that she has been attacked at CM House. She came to the Civil Lines Police Station and left without giving a complaint. She said she would file a complaint later.” Maliwal could not be contacted despite repeated attempts. Two daily diary entries have been made regarding the PCR call.In a video that went viral today during the simultaneous Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assembly polling in Andhra Pradesh, YSR Congress MLA A Sivakumar was seen attacking a voter. The incident took place in the southern state's Guntur district as Sivakumar reportedly tried to cut ahead in line. The brawl broke out when a voter standing in line for polling at a booth in Tenali, Guntur objected to Sivakumar cutting the queue. A large crowd gathered as the MLA repeatedly slapped the voter, who is also seen attacking the YSRCP leader. It added that “if anything unwanted is noticed,” the deputy director of education in the district or zone and the Delhi Police are to be informed immediately.Global pharmaceutical manufacturer AstraZeneca has admitted that its Covid-19 vaccine, developed by researchers from the Oxford University, can cause a rare side effect of blood clotting and low platelet count after immunisation. In India, the same vaccine, called Covishield and manufactured by the Pune-based Serum Institute, has been administered through 175 crore doses. The schools received the threats on their official email IDs around 4 am. Speaking to reporters, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Vinai Kumar Saxena, said that the Delhi Police has found out the origin of the threat emails and that an investigation is underway. He added, quote, “I want to assure the people of Delhi that Delhi Police is fully prepared and we will try to prevent any untoward incident from happening.” Unquote.In other news, Anuj Thapan, one of the accused in the case related to firing outside actor Salman Khan's Bandra home, has died by suicide in the lock-up of Mumbai Police's crime branch. According to police officials, Thapan attempted to die by suicide at around 11am. “The incident took place in the bathroom of the police lock-up on the first floor,” the official said. Thapan, 32, was arrested on April 26 from Punjab by a team of Mumbai police crime branch.India's gross Goods and Services tax collections rose to a record-high level of Rs 2.10 lakh crore in April (for year-end sales in March), as per data released by the Finance Ministry today. Driven mainly by a rise in domestic transactions, the gross GST collections increased by 12.4 per cent in April. This is the highest level of GST collections recorded since the July 2017 of the indirect tax regime. The previous highest level registered under GST was Rs 1.87 lakh crore in April 2023, reflecting year-end sales of March 2023.Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara today said there is no question of protecting anyone including Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna over an alleged sex scandal involving him and that action has been initiated in accordance with law by forming a Special Investigation Team. He was reacting to Union Home Minister Amit Shah's statement on Tuesday wanting to know why the Congress government in Karnataka did not take any action against Prajwal Revanna. In the latest development in the sexual abuse case against Revanna, his father and party MLA H D Revanna, the SIT has issued notices to them. They have been asked to appear before SIT for probe.In international news, dozens were reportedly arrested Tuesday after Columbia University called in police to end the pro-Palestinian occupation on the New York campus. The demonstrators had occupied Hamilton Hall more than 12 hours earlier, spreading their reach from an encampment on the grounds. He added that the government has allocated Rs 11 lakh crore as capital expenditure in the Interim Budget 2024-25 to increase the pace of development.The Bihar Assembly session began today with Nitish Kumar's government in Bihar facing a trust vote. This followed two weeks after he jumped allegiance from the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) — a JD(U), RJD and Congress alliance — to the NDA bloc. Ahead of the vote, a no-confidence motion against Speaker Awadh Bihari Choudhary was taken up and passed by the Assembly, with 125 members voting in favour of the ouster.As more than 200 farmers' unions gear up for the ‘Dilli Chalo' march from Punjab, the Delhi Police imposed Section 144 across the national capital for a month, beginning today. An order issued by the Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora stated that there is “an absolute prohibition” on the organization, convening, or participation in any processions, demonstrations, rallies, or march on foot, whether for political, social, or any other purpose, within the geographical limits of Delhi/New Delhi.Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan resigned from the Indian National Congress today. Chavan will be joining the ruling Shinde-led Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party alliance in the state. Sources have alleged that Chavan is likely to get a ticket from the BJP for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. Reacting to the developments, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that Congress leaders are suffocated within the party and the BJP anticipates more INC leaders to be joining them in the coming days.The Ministry of External Affairs said today that three months after they were sentenced to death, seven out of the eight former Indian Navy personnel were released from Qatar's custody and brought back to India. While seven sailors returned to India early today, Commander Purnendu Tiwari, whose death sentence was commuted but still received the harshest punishment of a 25-year life term, hasn't returned yet. Recently, the Delhi Police arrested Aftab Poonawala for allegedly killing his live-in partner, Shradda Walker. As is often in the case of such murders, there was history of domestic violence. Shraddha allegedly told her friends that she was assaulted several times by her partner. We are replaying an older episode from our series Pinjra Tod Kar, reported by Padma Priya DVL. It follows the story of Sultana who suffered months of violence by her husband and was nearly killed by him. Like Shraddha, Sultana too, did not have the support of her family which made it difficult for her to seek help. The episode discusses the toughest challenges facing women and their right to dignity and life- violence against women and specifically domestic violence.
