A Porter's Life: Riding the Rails of Black Labor HistoryThe morning of April 6th 1907, Ross Wood decided to fill out the application to become a Pullman Porter. He was 23 years old, and until this point he has only ever worked as a servant; a “houseboy”. Wood was born to parents that were enslaved not too long before he was born. He thought about how if he had been born just 20 years earlier, he too would've been a slave. He wanted to be a porter. It was a respected job among his black peers and even though he would spend his days being demeaned, the $10 a week might've been enough incentive. This week delivered royal chaos on an epic scale! Seven major charities dumped Sarah Ferguson faster than a hot potato after explosive emails revealed she called Jeffrey Epstein a "supreme friend" just weeks after publicly vowing to cut ties forever. But that wasn't the worst of it - new allegations emerged about Prince Andrew's involvement in a Thai orgy with over 40 women, described by witnesses as "industrial scale" encounters funded by taxpayers! Meanwhile, Prince Harry quietly registered six-year-old Archie for Eton College in a stunning move that could see the Sussex and Cambridge cousins educated together - only to have his spokesperson deny everything by Friday! Palace insiders are still furious over Harry's Guardian interview, with sources saying "his mouth is his biggest problem." Plus: William and Charles held crisis talks at Balmoral about keeping the monarchy united, Kate delivered a tear-jerking tribute to the Southport victims, Princess Anne gave underwire bra advice at a lingerie factory, and Meghan got publicly dumped by a reality TV star after snubbing her with gift boxes!

This week you are going to meet Molly and Jane of Content Queen, a two-person Bay Area-based zine publisher. And we are going to talk about all kinds of very hot topics (including literally Hot Topic):Why do Jane and Molly make physical zines rather than virtual/online content in 2025? The answer is important and might get you thinking…How has the kind of “content” we consume (especially the content we READ) changed in the social media era?Two of Content Queen's zines that are explicitly fashion-related: Stressful, Awkward, Envied: ‘90s and ‘00s Brands From Those Who Wore the Clothes, Worked the Registers, and Modeled for the Catalogs AND Wendy's World, “an immersion into the early-'90s downtown New York world of the ultimate cult indie fashion label, Built by Wendy.”Along the way Molly and Jane will tell us what it's like to vend at a zine fair in 2025 (and why it's different than it used to be). And we'll wrap it all up by making our trend predictions. Amanda gets things started with explaining why something as simple as reading is a radical act of resistance in 2025 (and why we need to protect books and libraries).Go order and read Molly and Jane's zines so we can talk about them: contentqueenzine.comFind them on IG: @contentqueenzineJOIN AMANDA FOR THE CLOTHESHORSE BIRTHDAY CRAFTERNOON ON JULY 20!Additional reading:"It's so boring': Gen Z parents don't like reading to their kids - and educators are worried," Alaina Demopoulos, The Guardian."The Elite College Students Who Can't Read Books," Rose Horowitch, The Atlantic.Banned and Challenged Books dashboard, American Library Association.Get your Clotheshorse merch here: https://clotheshorsepodcast.com/shop/If you want to share your opinion/additional thoughts on the subjects we cover in each episode, feel free to email, whether it's a typed out message or an audio recording: amanda@clotheshorse.worldDid you enjoy this episode? Vocal pedagogy expert Ken Bozeman returns to the podcast, joining Alexa to explore laryngeal vs. acoustic registration, how vowel modification impacts vocal range, and the role of sensory feedback in refining vocal technique. KEY TAKEAWAYS Laryngeal registration involves physical changes in the larynx and muscle use to shape vocal folds for different pitches. Acoustic registration focuses on the interaction between pitch, harmonics, and vowel resonance to produce different timbres. Understanding both helps singers and teachers refine vocal techniques. To understand vowel resonance and acoustic registration, try these exercises: modify vowel shapes to note resonance changes, whisper different vowels to explore natural resonances, sing with nasal consonants to feel nasal resonance, focus on harmonics and resonance shifts, and use vocal fry and whispers to identify resonances. To apply acoustic registration concepts, adjust vowel shapes for timbres like whoop (smooth), close (sizzly), and open (buzzier). Practise smooth transitions and use nasal consonants to explore resonances. Focus on sensory feedback, experiment with expression, and train your ear for harmonics. Record and analyse your singing for improvement. Ken recommends that singers and teachers focus on developing a strong understanding of acoustic principles and how they can be applied to improve vocal technique. He suggests using tools like the chiaroscuro whisper to explore and understand vocal resonances. BEST MOMENTS "Laryngeal registration deals with how the vocal folds are shaped for pitch, while acoustic registration is determined by the relationship between the pitch being sung and the potential harmonics of that pitch." "In non-classical styles, the goal is to keep the entire range as speech-like as possible, which may involve compromises due to the different paint set of each pitch." "Open timbre in acoustic terms is more oral. You feel it in the mouth." "Attitude, is it an emotion or is it an attitude?” EPISODE RESOURCES Guest Website: http://www.kenbozeman.com/ Get Ken's book ‘Practical Vocal Acoustics' here: https://rowman.com/ISBN/9781538174647/Practical-Vocal-Acoustics-Pedagogic-Applications-for-Teachers-and-Singers Get Ken's book ‘Kinesthetic Voice Pedagogy 2' here: https://www.voxped.com/KVP2.html BAST Level 5 Singing Teacher Training Qualification BAST Book A Call Relevant Links & Mentions: (Podcast) Singing Teachers Talk: Ep.146 How to Understand and Apply Vocal Acoustic Pedagogy with Ken Bozeman The work of Ingo Titze The work of Ian Howell (Podcast) Singing Teachers Talk: Ep.167 Understanding Nasality and Perception in the Singing Voice with Dr Nicholas Perna Wolfgang Saus: https://www.oberton.org/en/ (Book) Voice is FREE After SOVT by Karin Titze Cox & Ingo Titze (Podcast) Singing Teachers Talk: Ep.170 Understanding the Science of SOVTs: In Conversation with Ingo Titze & Karin Titze Cox Approximate First Formant Locations from Ken Bozeman: http://www.kenbozeman.com/formant-location.php Kaya Herstad-Carney: kayamusic.com (Podcast) Singing Teachers Talk: Ep.103 How to ‘Measure' a Singer with Kaya Herstad-Carney Voce Vista: https://www.vocevista.com/ The work of Donald Miller ABOUT THE GUEST Kenneth Bozeman, BM, MM, is Professor Emeritus of Music, having taught at Lawrence University for 42 years. All Things Vocal: Podcast for Singers, Speakers, Voice Coaches and Producers
In this episode I teach vocal exercises I designed using voiced consonants and vowels to help singers AND speakers blend their chest and head registers. Doing these exercises also helps you eliminate vocal breaks, add more resonance and range and ease vocal strain. These benefits occur as we take the voice across the passagio from chest to head voice while pulling and morphing the syllables. It's weird, but it works!
