This Day in Legal History: Paris Peace AccordsOn January 27, 1973, the Paris Peace Accords were signed, formally ending direct U.S. military involvement in the Vietnam War. The agreement, brokered after years of intense negotiations, was signed by representatives from the United States, North Vietnam, South Vietnam, and the Provisional Revolutionary Government of South Vietnam. The key provisions included a ceasefire, the withdrawal of U.S. troops, the release of prisoners of war, and a commitment to peaceful reunification efforts. Dr. Henry Kissinger, serving as the U.S. National Security Advisor, played a pivotal role in negotiating the agreement, earning him the 1973 Nobel Peace Prize, which he controversially shared with North Vietnamese negotiator Lê Đức Thọ, who declined the award. The accords marked a significant moment in Cold War diplomacy, as they sought to halt one of the most controversial conflicts in U.S. history. Despite the agreement, tensions remained high, and fighting between North and South Vietnam continued. Ultimately, the accords failed to establish lasting peace, as North Vietnamese forces launched a successful campaign to reunify Vietnam under communist control in 1975.The accords also addressed humanitarian concerns, including provisions for the return of U.S. prisoners of war, such as those held at the infamous "Hanoi Hilton." The agreements emphasized self-determination for the South Vietnamese people, though political realities on the ground made this challenging. The signing of the Paris Peace Accords underscored the limits of U.S. influence in Vietnam and symbolized a broader shift in American foreign policy, as the nation grappled with the aftermath of its longest war to date.Elon Musk has asked a federal judge in Texas to dismiss a class-action lawsuit accusing him and his political action committee, America PAC, of running an illegal lottery. The lawsuit, filed by Arizona resident Jacqueline McAferty, alleges that Musk misled voters in seven battleground states into signing a petition supporting the U.S. Constitution by offering a chance to win $1 million. McAferty argues that this violated Texas deceptive trade practices laws, as winners were supposedly chosen at random.Musk, however, contends that participants were informed they would be evaluated for opportunities to become America PAC spokespeople, not awarded a random prize. He emphasized that this process did not involve "chance" and thus was not a lottery. Musk also rejected claims that collecting petition signers' personal information caused harm, noting there was no evidence of misuse. The lawsuit, filed on Election Day in 2024, seeks at least $5 million in damages for petition signers. It follows a related legal effort in Philadelphia, where a judge declined to halt Musk's giveaway, ruling it was not an illegal lottery. Musk is a Texas resident, and Tesla, his electric car company, is headquartered in Austin.Elon Musk says $1 million election giveaway wasn't an illegal lottery | ReutersIndian digital news outlets, including those owned by billionaires Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani, have joined a copyright lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging unauthorized use of their content to train its AI models. News organizations such as NDTV, Network18, Indian Express, and Hindustan Times argue that OpenAI's "willful scraping" of their material threatens their copyrights and undermines their advertising revenue. This legal filing builds on a prior lawsuit initiated by ANI, India's most prominent news agency, marking a significant escalation in the legal battle. The media outlets accuse OpenAI of prioritizing partnerships with international publishers while neglecting similar agreements with Indian companies, resulting in unfair advantages. OpenAI, however, maintains that its use of publicly available data adheres to fair use principles and asserts that Indian courts lack jurisdiction over its U.S.-based servers. This legal challenge occurs as India's generative AI market is poised for rapid growth, and OpenAI views the country as a key market with a large user base. Critics of OpenAI's practices argue its actions undermine press freedom and could weaken democracy in India. Meanwhile, OpenAI continues to defend its business model, citing partnerships with major global publishers and emphasizing its compliance with copyright laws in other regions.OpenAI to face Indian news firms of Ambani, Adani in copyright battle, documents show | ReutersA wave of new state laws targeting "forever chemicals" (PFAS) in cosmetics took effect this year, reflecting growing concerns over the health and environmental risks of these persistent substances. California, Colorado, and several other states have banned the intentional use of PFAS in products like lipstick and mascara, while broader measures in states such as Minnesota also cover textiles, cookware, and food packaging. PFAS, often used for properties like water resistance or shine, can accumulate in the environment and pose health risks such as cancer, low birth weight, and fertility issues, according to the EPA.Businesses are responding by assessing their supply chains, reformulating products, and removing items from shelves to comply with the patchwork of state laws, which vary in scope. Some companies may adopt nationwide standards based on these bans, while others will adjust their product offerings by jurisdiction. Legal experts warn of additional challenges, including lawsuits over "greenwashing" if products marketed as sustainable or eco-friendly are found to contain PFAS, even unintentionally.Consumer lawsuits have already targeted items like waterproof mascara, disposable tableware, and smartwatch bands for PFAS content, citing false advertising. Meanwhile, some state laws, like those in Maine, acknowledge that PFAS are unavoidable in certain industries, requiring disclosure instead of outright bans. These measures are expected to spur further regulation of chemicals in cosmetics and beyond, particularly at the state level, as consumer demand for "clean beauty" and environmentally friendly products continues to grow.'Forever Chemicals' Reckoning Hits Cosmetics With New State LawsCadwalader, Wickersham & Taft reported a record $638 million in revenue in 2024, a 15% increase driven by its work with Wall Street banks and private credit markets. The firm's strategy combines advising traditional banking clients and expanding its services to private capital providers as both sectors increasingly collaborate. Notable deals include representing BNP Paribas in a $5 billion financing partnership with Apollo-backed ATLAS SP Partners and helping arrange a European middle-market private credit collateralized loan obligation.  The firm's 80 equity partners earned an average of $3.7 million each last year, a 33% increase. Managing Partner Pat Quinn emphasized that Cadwalader's smaller size, with about 430 lawyers and offices in only five cities, fosters close collaboration and a personal touch with clients. Lawyers also benefit from flexible office policies, with partners required to be in four days a week and associates encouraged to attend voluntarily on Mondays.Cadwalader's capital markets, fund finance, and real estate practices performed strongly, while its investigations group expanded into broader corporate conduct matters. The London office also posted record revenue, bolstered by leveraged finance and fund finance work. With rising demand and increasingly complex transactions, Quinn anticipates that 2025 could surpass last year's success.Cadwalader Revenue Jumps 15% as Banks, Private Credit Align This is a public episode. In many ways, electric vehicles today are where mobile phones were in the early 2000s. It's December 2002. Mobile phones have entered the market, but the average Indian is still pretty sceptical. Cell phone connections are patchy and more importantly expensive. Devices themselves were unwieldy, limited and again…expensive. Basic services like sending a text, or a voice mail, or call waiting were considered ‘add-on services' and they needed to be purchased separately. So most people thought it just wasn't worth the investment. That was until Reliance came in and changed everything. Back then, Mukesh Ambani launched Infocomm. The idea was to make telephone calls in India as cheap as sending a postcard. And it worked. Slowly, as costs started to drop, more and more people saw sense in adopting mobile phones, and eventually abandoning landlines altogether. This episode is by no means a history lesson. But that context was important. Because India is almost exactly where it was back then. Except, the device they are on the fence about is now electric vehicles. And the company in question now is JSW MG Motor. Funnily enough, the solutions that JSW is coming up with are eerily similar to the Reliance strategy back then. It's biggest proposition? The ruling BJP secured a historic third term in Haryana, winning 48 Assembly seats. The Congress, meanwhile, won 37 seats, Independents stood at 3 and the INLD won 2 seats. In the JK UT, The NC-Congress alliance crossed the 46-seat majority mark, securing 49 seats . The NC won the highest number of seats at 42, the Congress took six, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), which was also part of the alliance, secured one. Meanwhile, the BJP won 29 seats and the PDP bagged three. Seven Independents were declared victorious. The AAP and Jammu & Kashmir People Conference secured one seat each. The final rites of Ratan Tata, the legendary industrialist and Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons, were performed with full state honors on Thursday evening. This comes two day after Atishi was asked to vacate the bungalow by officials from the Public Works Department (PWD)- a department under her own charge. The 30-minute call was the first known chat for Biden and Netanyahu since August and coincides with a sharp escalation of Israel's conflict with Iran and the Iran-backed Lebanese Hezbollah, but with no sign of an imminent ceasefire to end the conflict with Iran-backed Hamas in Gaza. This ensures fair competition, and showcases incredible human spirit and determination. India is currently at 15 medals in these Games — watch out for a better tally in the days to come.At R-I-L's annual general meeting last week, Mukesh Ambani formally announced the merger of JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar. This deal has stirred unease among producers and content creators, who fear it could lead to a market monopoly. With one fewer player in the market, their bargaining power is diminished, and the commissioning of new shows and films may decline. Lata Jha reports that Disney+ Hotstar had already been slowing down on commissioning new content. Despite these concerns, some media experts see potential benefits in the merger. It turns out you can have your brownie and eat it too. He is accused of not acting against harmful content on the app. Allegations include drug trafficking, fraud, cyberbullying, and generating fake images. Earlier, John McAfee and Julian Assange have been arrested on similar grounds. He revealed a strategy to double the income of Reliance's digital and retail branches under the brands Jio and Reliance Retail in the next 3-4 years. Ambani envisions RIL's new energy venture to match the size of its oil-to-chemical business, which generated ₹5.64 trillion in FY24, in just five years. Ambani highlighted the transformative plans for Reliance Industries, detailing initiatives across five key business areas: O2C, retail, Jio, media, and green energy, Mint's Anirudh Laskar reports. Ambani is betting big on a future where Reliance isn't just a heavyweight in traditional sectors but also leads in green energy and tech. The plan includes a massive green energy complex in Jamnagar, envisioned as a future global energy hub. Up until a few years ago, you could only take an international flight from one of India's major airports. Anu Sharma reports that airports such as Amritsar, Bhubaneswar, Lucknow and Kozhikode are seeing robust growth in international travel. Travellers from these regions usually go to Southeast Asia and the Middle East, Anu writes.  Millions of students pursue an engineering degree every year in hopes of getting a job offer from India's top IT companies. Last year's graduates were caught in the midst of a storm as many IT firms refused to go for campus placements. This year, Wipro has decided to come back for this exercise. A student might be excited to see that they have been placed in the “elite” category at Wipro, but the salary comes in at only 3.5 lakh rupees per annum. Jas Bardia reports that while Wipro will be going to recruit in a couple of weeks, they will only be rolling out their lowest packages to students. In previous hiring cycles, packages for freshers went as high as 10.5 lakh rupees. Last year's struggles continue for IT sector aspirants.  In India, companies are now required to have a certain number of women on their boards, but this often just ticks a box rather than ensuring their voices are truly heard in decision-making. Speaking to Mint's Devina Sengupta, Aparna Mittal from the Samāna Centre for Gender, Policy and Law pointed out that it's not just about having women on boards but whether they're genuinely independent and their opinions valued. Despite this, there's a silver lining as pay for women directors has seen a significant boost, doubling over the last five years due to their increased responsibilities.   Wipro to up fresher hiring, but at lowest pay grade of Rs 3.5 lakh per yearReliance to double Jio, retail biz in 3-4 yearsOverseas travel picks up at non-metrosWomen independent directors' pay doubles in 5 yearsPavel Durov: Why tech and global geeks worry govts

Radhika Merchant has married her partner Anant Ambani, the youngest son of Asia's richest man, Mukesh Ambani. When your Dad is the 11th richest person in the world, worth over $112bn, you can afford a wedding year, rather than a wedding day, right? After seven months of celebration, Marnie and the panel review the festivities to see if there is any science lingering under the ‘I dos'. Hear of Hindu wedding customs and superstitions, and why something called evolutionary lag might be behind traditions that make very little sense. Also, rings, but not the wedding bands. Professor Valerie Trouet, from the Laboratory of Tree Ring Research at the University of Arizona tells tales of the ancient circles found within trees harbouring secrets of climates past and future. Plus sleep divorce, why it might be a marriage saver, and finally putting to bed who has the best sleep pattern, the night owls or the early birds.Presenter: Marnie Chesterton Panellists: Tristan Ahtone & Chhavi Sachdev Producers: Harrison Lewis, Julia Ravey, Alex Mansfield & Noa Dowling

I'll take a greedy, self centered, reprobate, disgusting bastard for 500 Alex. This Indian business man threw a $325 million wedding for his son. Who is Mukesh Ambani? In case you don't know, let me explain the wedding. Anant Ambani is the youngest son of Mukesh Ambani, a business tycoon who runs Reliance Industries which has interests in petrochemicals, oil and gas, telecom, retail and financial services. . His net worth is more than $123 billion. Mukesh inherited this business from his father, who started the company in 1966. It's a while trickle down nepo baby economics thing going on there. Because they just need to affirm the status (or, I suspect, have small tallywhackers) felt the need to throw a wedding that cost $325 million and lasted 6 months. That's right, the festivities have been going on since March.***You can check out Ladies Love Politics website to read a transcript/references of this episode at www.ladieslovepolitics.com.Be sure to follow the Ladies Love Politics channel on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Truth Social, Brighteon Social, Threads, and Twitter. Background Music Credit:Music: Hang for Days - Silent Partner https://youtu.be/A41A0XeU2ds

This week, Newslaundry's Abhinandan Sekhri and Raman Kirpal are joined by journalists Girish Kuber, Sunita Aron, and Sudipto Mondal. On Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech accusing the Congress of receiving money from industrialists Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani, Sudipto says this news is not headline material but rather “gossip material”. He adds that the talk on the ground is “nahi mila kya is baar”, suggesting that the corporate houses put their weight behind the Congress in this election. On the elections in Maharashtra, Girish says, “There is no state-wide agenda in these polls. There are 48 constituencies and 48 election agendas.” Sunita points out the BJP's big challenge in UP. “The BJP has set a target of 75 seats, but after Rahul and Akhilesh came together, there is better chemistry and coordination [in INDIA bloc].”The panel then discusses the BSP's prospects and the sacking of its leader and Mayawati's nephew, Akash Anand, from the post of national coordinator. Sudipto counters Abhinandan's argument of the BSP being the BJP's B-team, saying it “doesn't come with a sensitivity” that the party represents a politics “different from all other parties” and represents “the most oppressed sections”. He adds, “The pragmatism that other parties show is appreciated a lot more than the pragmatism these parties [including the AIMIM and VBA] show.”This and a whole lot more.
