...in which we visit Crosthwaite to shine a light on one of Lakeland's most neglected historic figures – remarkable Eliza Lynn Linton, the first female salaried journalist in England. In the company of author Philippa Harrison, Keswick Museum curator Nicola Lawson and academic Sue Wilkinson, we learn about Eliza's traumatic childhood and the self-education that allowed her to escape the family home and embark on a writing career among the literary elite of her day. Reflecting on the passionate attachments Eliza formed with both men and women, we turn to Eliza's beautiful The Lake Country, a 'love book' to Cumbria that inspired Alfred Wainwright, and which Rawnsley thought would never be bettered. As we make our way to the overgrown Lynn family grave, we consider the contradictions of a contrary life; of Eliza's complex views on sexuality; of the great U-turn that saw her abandon her one-time progressive feminist ideals; and of the curious fact that this once infamous writer – and her superlative guidebook – are now barely acknowledged, even in the margins of Cumbrian history. Philippa's book, A Mountain Republic: Crosthwaite Parish and the Eighteen Men, can be found at all local bookshops. As we walk, with author and Lakeland Walker columnist George Kitching, we explore the concept of the 'sublime' – the awe-rooted spiritual response to mountain scenery first identified in 18th century philosophy. Tracing the sublime through early Lakeland guidebooks, we enter the Romantic era to arrive at Scafell Crag and the writings of Alfred Wainwright. With a backdrop of ever-shifting cloudscapes atop Wastwater's tumbling screes, we consider the Beckside Boggle, the historic 'earth spirit' stronghold of remote Wasdale, and the tragic tale of French student Veronique Marre. City funding for Active Transportation and the importance of layers!Recently, City Council approved $4 million to be put towards our nearly one hundred kilometres of missing sidewalk spaces, unsafe crossings and gaps in bike paths. This work will be done this year and next and is in line with both the city's vision of a 15-minute community and its climate goals.  The city will also be considering its snow and ice removal processes, particularly in light of climate-change oriented weather conditions. This consideration is important given that last week I was talking about being active in tremendously cold weather and this week we're seeing temperatures on the plus side of zero.   Really the only consistency I can offer is Alfred Wainwright's saying: “There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.” I recommend that you dress in layers regardless of the weather, so that if you're too warm or too cold you have the layers available as needed. Furthermore, I also recommend that you carry a satchel to put your extra gear in so that you can account for temperature fluctuations during the day.

Sabrina Verjee - What an amazing athlete and example being set in our sport. Sabrina set out to try to set a new record for ascending "All of the Wainwrights". There are 214 mountain peaks in the Lake District in the UK that Alfred WainWright wrote about in his 7 volume book. A few people have run them all, the route covers 318miles and over 4 times the ascent of Mt Everest. Last year Paul Tierney took the record from Steve Birkenshaw. This year Sabrina attempted it. Completed it. And then gained an even greater reputation by declaring "It's not a record". Sabrina was running, walking, crawling, bum sliding for almost 7 days to complete this epic adventure. Due to injury Sabrina had to lean on some of her supporters to safely descend some hills backwards. Therefore Sabs has rejected the record and vowed to come back and complete it in a pure style in the sprit of British fell running. We catch up with Sabs tired again after supporting her husband Ben on his "Bob Graham Round". Sabrina is absolutely clear that the support of her wonderful crew made it a fantastic adventure and would like to take every opportunity to thank: Her husband Ben, Kim Collison, Jacob and Sabina Snochowski, Simon Mills, Sally Fawcett, Tim Miller, Steve Birkinshaw, Tom and Astrid Gibbs, Paul Tierney, Dave Cummins, Charlie Sproson, Jeff Powell Davies, Joe Faulkner, Helen Jackson, James Thurlow, Victoria Rose-Miller, Ben Abdelnour, Shane Ohly, Josh Hartley, John Knapp, Neil Talbott, Nicky Spinks, Mike and Hazel Robinson, Lou Roberts, Bruce Duncan, Dave Spence, Peter Sowerby, Rob Bond, Giles Ruck, Paul Wilson, Gaynor Prior, Wendy Dodds, Jonathan Whilock, Dan Duxbury and Howard Dracup. However, since the proposed sale of the mountain in 2014 it has become known as the 'Peoples Mountain'. The owner, the 8th Earl of Lonsdale, put the mountain up for sale at a price of £1.75 million and a community group called Friends of Blencathra was set up in a bid to raise enough money to buy the mountain. In 2015, the mountain was taken off the market but the sense of ownership felt by the local community remains. He asked it we'd link listeners up to the 8bitcollective site — 'the first completely open chiptune-related media repository and file sharing community'. The electronicMESS track is available there for use under a Creative Commons License, along with a stack of other great 8-bit jams.
