What does it take to return to the top of the ultra running world after major life changes and a "career-ending" surgery? Kaytlyn Gerbin knows. In this episode, Kaytlyn shares her journey from a scientist with a love for the outdoors to a world-class trail and ultra runner. Growing up active but without formal running experience, she discovered her talent in her mid-twenties and quickly fell in love with the 100-mile distance. Since then, she's set course records, tackled some of the most technical alpine trails in the Pacific Northwest, and stood on podiums at legendary races like UTMB, Western States 100, and Transgrancanaria. But Kaytlyn's story isn't just about running. It's about resilience, reinvention, and balance. After the birth of her daughter Era in 2024 and undergoing surgery to correct hip dysplasia—a procedure many thought would end her running career—Kaytlyn came back stronger than ever, winning the Cascade Crest 100 and taking on the epic 330km Tor des Geants race in Italy. In this episode, you'll hear about: How she discovered her running talent and found her passion for ultra distances Overcoming setbacks, starting over, and learning to meet herself where she is The mental strategies that help her tackle 100-mile races and multi-day alpine challenges Balancing motherhood with elite-level running Her plans and goals for 2026, including Hardrock 100 and UTMB Whether you're an aspiring ultra runner, a parent chasing big goals, or someone who loves stories of grit, perseverance, and adventure, Kaytlyn's story will inspire you to push your limits—on the trails and in life. Tune in to hear how Kaytlyn combines mountains, motherhood, and science-backed training to redefine what's possible, one long run at a time. *** New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast drop every Tuesday at 7 AM (UK time)! If you follow ultrarunning, you've probably heard the name Caleb Olson recently. In 2025, he broke through in a big way, winning the Western States 100 in 14:11:25, the second-fastest time ever on that iconic course. But his rise wasn't sudden. Raised in the Seattle area, Caleb was an All-ASUN runner at Liberty University, with PRs of 3:51 in the 1500m and 29:11 in the 10,000m. He entered the ultra world in 2018 and has built his career on quiet consistency and smartcoaching. Now running for the Nike ACG team, working full-time as a software developer, and adjusting to life as a new dad, Caleb is hitting his stride. In the last two years, he's racked up major results. In 2023 he got his Golden Ticket at the Grindstone Ultramarathon; in 2024 he came in 5th at Western States in his debut, while also securing 2nd at the Madeira Island Ultra-Trail 85K; and then in 2025 he set a course record during his win at Transgrancanaria in a time of 12:17:25.This led to his historic victory at Western States this past July.Trained by Jack Kuenzle and shaped by a background in mountaineering and triathlon, Caleb has become one of the most versatile and mentally tough athletes on the trail scene today. In today's conversation, Caleb takes me through his win at Western States, all that went into it, how he handles doubts and builds confidence, his crazy NIKE shirt he wore that broke the internet, being a new dad, what is next for him, and so much more.Tap into the Caleb Olson Special. "Running is always my passion as it was before I was a professional runner. It's just been an evolution." – Francesco PuppiFrancesco Puppi is on fire! A few weeks ago, he has claimed first place at the Transgrancanaria Marathon 2025, overtaking Kenyan runner Robert Pkemoi in a dramatic final sprint. In this episode, we dive into Francesco's journey from track and field to professional trail running. He shares how he balances speed with technical skills, the evolution of his career, and the challenges of managing expectations as a professional athlete. We also discuss his recent victory at Transgrancanaria 2025, where he strategically paced himself and overcame unexpected setbacks. He reflects on the mental and emotional aspects of racing, the importance of authenticity in social media, and why supporting fellow athletes is key to a thriving trail running community.Beyond racing, Francesco is passionate about the growth and inclusivity of trail running. As a co-founder of the Pro Trail Runners Association, he advocates for athletes' rights and the sport's development. He also reflects on the role of social media, authenticity, and community in his journey, emphasizing the importance of lifting each other up in the sport."If you are in this game, it's also about trying to lift each other up and to support each other, because why not?"But that's not all! Francesco and I had so much more to discuss that he invited me to continue our conversation on his podcast, Running Long. Part two of our discussion will be available there starting March 26—don't miss it! The link is below.

Today it was announced that a consortium of independent races has come together as an alliance known as the World Trail Majors. It includes the Hong Kong 100, Black Canyon 100k, Transgrancanaria, Madeira Island Ultra Trail, Ultra Trail Mt. Fuji, Swiss Canyon Trail, South Downs Way, Quebec Mega Trail, & Ultra Trail Cape Town. From the founding press release: "World Trail Majors was not born with the intention of confrontation or of solving all the problems of this fast-developing sport, but rather to provide a new, alternative path of development which aims to be inspirational to all runners and organisers." On the podcast, we're joined by some of the Race Directors from the founding races of WTM -- Jamil Coury, Stu McConnachie, Janet Ng, & Steve Brammar. We discuss the founding vision, the values, the structure, and the future of the organization. Ragna Debats of the Netherlands (living in Spain) put in a stellar performance at the 2023 Javelina 100, placing 2nd and punching her golden ticket for the 2024 Western States Endurance Run. Ragna will be returning to Auburn next June to try and better her current masters record of 17:41 where she places 3rd in 2021. She has won some pretty incredible races around the world including Istria 100, Transgrancanaria and Marathon Des Sables but we were particularly intrigued with an epic journey she took with her family a couple of years ago called Rolling Mountains. You can check out their journey, which included racing and training all around the world, on YouTube - it is both inspiring and motivational - https://www.youtube.com/@rollingmountains3868 We chat about all this and more. Here is Ragna... You can follow Ragna on Instagram here : https://www.instagram.com/debatsragna/ If you enjoyed our show please leave a rating and review. We would really appreciate it. As far as superlatives go, there's little hand wringing about Salomon Athlete Courtney Dauwalter's standing as one of the best ultrarunners in the world, period. In a sport known for its fickleness, she's been outright untouchable on the trails for the past two years, riding a 15-race win streak that dates back all the way to 2021 and includes dominant victories on stages such as UTMB (where she set a new female course record in 2021) and Hardrock 100. Matt Mitchell recently sat down with Courtney to try and get a sense for how she conceives of running as something that can be taken lightly but practiced seriously. Along the way, they also map the interior of her pain cave, the mental space she occupies when things get dark deep in a race; discuss what does and does not belong on top of nachos; talk bowhunting; and a whole lot more.
