Why do the right-wing intelligentsia keep talking Britain down? Didn't they get all they ever wanted when we left the EU? And who are the worst culprits? Alistair revels in Southampton's brief flirtation with the top of the Premier League, while the two Pompey fans console themselves with a narrow FA Cup first-round success. The guys also discuss rugby union - well two of them do - and the US election. As always, there are also plenty of laughs. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this month's edition of Sports Chat, host Dave Bowers is joined, once again, by Shine Radio's sports editor, James Robbins, and 'award-winning'* comedian Alistair Barrie. Plus, there are plenty of laughs. Check out Alistair Barrie at AlistairBarrie.com. “No one does righteous indignation with the same brio as Barrie, an inheritor of the splenetic mantle of the great 80s' alternative comedians” The Guardian *Open to debate, following this show ... UK comedy legend Alistair Barrie embarks on a journey into a life he knows nothing about, discussing it in depth with Steven Davidson who has very kindly created this new life and told Al nothing about it at all. Alistair has to improvise and lie his way through this epic journey, with magnificent results!
In January 2015, topical comedian, Alistair Barrie’s wife, was diagnosed with breast cancer. His show, ‘No More Stage Three’ covers the downs and occasional ups of watching your partner go through treatment for a life-threatening disease. Alistair Barrie presides over April's show as panellists Angela Barnes, Jo Brand, Joe Wells and Andy Zaltzman discuss topics including the forthcoming election. Meanwhile Nick Revell looks at Islamic State's accounts, and Christian Reilly provides a song on the topic of 'choices'.
Kevin Day is joined by Nick Revell, Susan Murray, Carey Marx and Martin Rowson to discuss topics including Jeremy Clarkson, Prince Charles, swearwords and what exactly satire is. Also featuring an attempted radicalisation of the nation's youth by Alistair Barrie and music from Pippa Evans.
James O'Brien hosts, with Bea Campbell, Aisling Bea, Trevor Crook and Tobias Persson discussing - amongst other things - Popes, Revolution, Black Friday and Humanitarian Awards. With songs on Vans and Class Insults from James Sherwood, and the usual contributions from Alistair Barrie and Nick Revell.
Given that two of the biggest topics this week are the global threat of a fatal disease with no cure and a string of stories of sexual violence, it's surprising this is not the most gag-dense edition we've ever done. A compelling and informative discussion of Ebola, courtesy of Medecin sans Frontieres Ivan Gayton; Sameena Zehra offers some interesting activist strategies for a pacifist...; Barry Castagnola offers a profound philosophical rumination on situations where contracting Ebola virus might be attractive; and Chris Coltrane displays a surprising awareness of IKEA. Jonny Awsum supplies a calypso, and everything is held together expertly and elegantly by guest host Kevin Day. With fantastic monologues from Alistair Barrie and Nick Revell, who coincidentally also write these billing notes.
Kevin Day hosts and David Elms provides the laid-back sound track to this chilled out Bank Holiday edition of No Pressure. Plenty of swearing and vile insults, as the panel discuss the World Cup, racism, sexism and alcohol, while Bennett Arron suggests a scientific invention which rivals anything from Douglas Adams. Rich Peppiatt explains definitively why UKIP get so much TV coverage, Elis James dissects Ed Miliband mercilessly and yet with great mercy, and feminist comedian Kate Smurthwaite cracks the best dick joke. Alistair Barrie and Nick Revell also lurking as usual.

No Pressure to Be Funny, March 30th 2014 - in which we deliver something unique in the history of British media - an interesting, informative and very funny discussion of the EU... Joe Wells brings the long-overlooked dolphin angle of the Ukraine crisis to public attention, causing Robin Ince to lose his nice-guy-in-an-edgy-cardigan image, Alex Andreou compares Vladimir Putin enlighteningly to his cat, and Suzanne Moore lyrically eulogises Ed Miliband's 'MDMA eyes'. Pippa Evans introduces the new king of wimp-rock alongside her more famous character Loretta Maine. With the regular contributions from Alistair Barrie and Nick Revell, and hosted as usual by James O'Brien.
In this edition, Dave Fulton inadvertently reveals the polyerotic undertones of being caught in an avalanche when a discussion of the Winter Olympics goes off-piste; Jonny and the Baptists share some of their fanmail from UKIP, while Alistair Barrie channels the party's soul with uncanny and chilling accuracy. Phill Jupitus and Ben Norris offer insight on why the British are not inclined to rebel, and Viv Groskop and Nick Revell try different ways of making sense of the situation in Ukraine.
Michael Deacon, Sara Pascoe, Miles Jupp and Nathan Caton join James O'Brien to discuss UKIP's meteorological theories, whether or not Lord Anelka and Nicolas Rennard should apologise, and similar things comedians regret saying and doing; the panel compares Iain Duncan Smith and William Wilberforce, and share some entertaining home truths. Paul Thorne swears artistically to music, and Alistair Barrie and Nick Revell are as acerbic and witty as ever, which of course has nothing to do with the fact they write this little summary of the show.
This month on No Pressure To Be Funny, guest host Kevin Day wrangles a formidable array of talent whilst trying to be nice about The Great British Bake Off. The Guardian's Polly Toynbee definitely says pleb, Alex Andreou dares to suggest re-nationalising energy companies, and Chris Neill extolls the virtues of Lidl to Marcus Brigstocke, who's never been to one, obviously. Nick Revell gives Facebook a (be)heads up, Alistair Barrie wears a lot of jumpers and Jonny and the Baptists manage to both join UKIP and serenade Angela Merkel, all recorded in the storm-proof basement of Soho Theatre.
James O'Brien reveals the shameless and frankly disgusting behaviour of some members of the British aristocracy when it comes to trying to return unwanted clothing; Dan Smith of International Alert dispenses wisdom on the Middle East and hits a new personal best in laconic laugh generation of a one-syllable trigger. Angela Barnes reveals her crush on a senior British politician, Richard Herring effortlessly hits a trademark balance between gags and comments that other comics can only dream of emulating, Rich Peppiatt tells of the days he used to roam the streets of London in a burka with hilarious and nearly fatal consequences, and Steve Gribbin simply delivers two great songs. Alistair Barrie mounts a convincing argument in favour of veils for all, and Nick Revell brings tragic news from the catwalks of Milan.
In this month's show, Mitch Benn rocks the room with two pieces of satirical musical brilliance which contain more coherent and persuasive political arguments than we've heard from Her Majesty's Opposition since about 1945; Jessica Fostekew deflates Bilderberg conspiracy theories with the most elegant of rapier thrusts, Dan Smith gives profound and gripping summaries of the situation in Syria and Turkey; Hal Cruttenden offers a powerfully unconventional critique of 1984 and Liam Mullone reveals why he will always have a soft spot for Mexican transsexual prostitutes. Alistair Barrie argues entertainingly against gay marriage and Nick Revell reflects on the lighter side of mass shootings and constitutional abuse in the United States. All consummately held together by suave sophisticated and debonair former cannabis supplier Mr James O'Brien.
This month's No Pressure sees guest host Kevin Day come up with some interesting new programme ideas for BBC3 based on some thoroughly historical suggestions for punishing financial wrongdoing from The Keiser Report's Max Keiser. The Independent's Steve Richards lets rip his inner Rory Bremner, while Aisling Bea worries that Gangnam Style may have affected the Korean Peninsula in untold ways, and Paul Sinha has a novel solution to England's traditional difficulties in penalty shoot-outs. Jay Foreman presents some unfortunate musical truths about Sooty in the wake of the world's tiniest Twitter scandal, and there are the usual contributions from Nick Revell and Alistair Barrie. This month's show is dedicated to the memory of Margaret Thatcher, who, by dying between the recording and the editing of a topical podcast has managed to bugger things up all over again.
I'm trying desperately to get this edition of the Comedy Podcast Podcast up while it is still officially International Succotash Day. (As so declared by the inimitable Jabs of The DHead Factor podcast in Australia.) All day long our podcaster friends have been tweeting and messaging words of praise and support for the show — thanks, everybody! — and I've been enjoying seeing the number of downloads and the reviews and ratings go up! I'm Marc, he's THAT Chris Gore… Great fun this episode with my special guest co-host That Chris Gore onboard. Chris, the host of the PodCRASH podcast as well as regular on G4's Attack Of The Show, was in San Francisco for Stitcher's Podcast Awards. We talked about his tenure as publisher of one of my favorite magazines, FilmTHREAT, as well as his multi-pronged career doing all kinds of cool stuff in TV, the internet and film. Chris picked some nice clips for this epi, all of which I'd never covered before, and after we talked about his podcast — listeners of Succotash have heard from PodCRASH here previously — where he appears on other podcasts, then plays excerpts on his show. Which means that you've be able to hear part of this episode of Succotash on a future episode of PodCRASH. It's as about as meta an experience as you're likely to find. Two Marcs: Maron & Hershon Last Minute: Since I was late getting this up, I can tell you that I DID end up attending the Stitcher Awards with special guest co-host Chris and it was a grand time. I met the CEO of Stitcher, Noah Shanok, and even got a picture with the evening's host, WTF's Marc Maron. Sadly, though nominated for both Best New Show and Best Album Artwork, Chris didn't end up taking up an Itchy or whatever they call their awards. CLIPS PodCRASH A clip from PodCRASH epi55, wherein our guest co-host Chris Gore crashes Zane Lamprey Live. The main ingredient here seems to be alcohol. Cheers! Joe Rogan ExperienceComedian and UFC commentator Joe Rogan, well-known for hosting TV's Fear Factor, hosts a daily podcast where he talks to other comics, friends and just plain interesting folks. His show is part of the Deathsquad network of podcasts. Lost Moon RadioI met someone attached to Lost Moon Radio at the LA PodFest in October and he suggested I check it out. Now we're doing the same for you. Chris and I both loved the sound and feel of this sketch group out of Los Angeles, high prise considering this is only their third podcast. Pointless: With Kevin PereiraBest known as the co-host (and Chris Gore's colleague) on Attack Of The Show on G4, host Kevin Pereira has kicked off a new podcast on the Deathsquad network. In this clip he's chatting it up with successful YouTube video creator Freddie Wong. No Pressure To Be FunnyI'm a huge fan of dry, witty, and biting British comedy. Having cut my teeth on Monty Python way back when they first crept into the US, I'm pleased to discover No Pressure To Be Funny. Hosted by James O’Brien, created by with Nick Revell and Alistair Barrie, each episode pulls a panel together from the arts, media and politics, where they then chat about that week's news in front of a live audience. This clip features Revell with a monolog about the war in Afghanistan, in a style that smacks of Douglas Adams. Brilliant. Throwing ShadeChis brings in this clip from Throwing Shade, a new-to-me podcast. Hosts Erin Gibson and Bryan Safi are both prolific writers and comedians whose weekly show focuses on politics, entertainment, gay rights and women's issues. This is pretty damn funny chat. RIFF-erendumSan Francisco-based comedians Steven Pearl and Al Clethen, a couple of buddies of mine, started up RIFF-erendum so they could converse with some of THEIR favorite comedians and musicians. In the latest episode, they chew the fat with fellow Bay Area comic Jeff Applebaum. We close out Epi42 with the return of Will Durst and his Burst O' Durst. With the elections over, our Ambassador to the Middle sets his sights on what the lame ducks in Congress are doing…or not doing…as the year winds down. We're hoping to grace a pre-Christmas episode with a live appearance by the aforementioned Will Durst. By the way, if you're doing some driving over this holiday season, just remember that a long car ride is an excellent place to pass the Succotash! — Marc Hershon
