1975 was a banner year for Rookies in Major League Baseball. Fred Lynn broke onto the scene in Boston and won Rookie of the Year and MVP… the first player ever to do that. And in the National League, John, “The Count” Montefusco took home the honors of National League Rookie of the Year. The Giants hurler narrowly beat out The Kid, Gary Carter, who went on to have a Hall of Fame career as a catcher. The only other player to get a vote for American League Rookie of the Year was Lynn's teammate, a future Hall of Famer himself, Jim Rice who had a fantastic freshman year. The 3rd Hall of Famer in that rookie class was a pitcher in Cleveland by the name of Dennis Eckersley. But he wasn't the only young stud on that staff… Enter The Amazing Emu… Jim Kern. A non-drafted pitcher out of Midland, Michigan, Kern didn't rise quickly through the minors and took a detour when he joined the marines in 1969. After a year of serving and 5 more in the reserves, Kern's baseball career started to take off and after a brief callus to the bigs in '74, he came up for good in '75. As a starter he had inconsistent success but with Frank Robinson as his manager, he converted to a receiver in 1976 and a star was born. One of the hardest throwers in the game, Kern took to his new role immediately, winning 10 games and saving 15 with an ERA of 2.37 over 117 innings. He was an American League All-Star the next three seasons culminating in 1979 when he won 13 games out of the pen and saved another 29 while amassing 143 innings with an ERA of 1.57. A season for the ages for the 6'5 flamethrower. Unfortunately injuries plagued Kern for much of the rest of his career. He bounced around the league and other than a resurgence in 1982 for a bad Reds team, he never was as dominant as he was during that 4-year stretch from 1976-79… On the Past Our Prime podcast, Kern tells us about his journey from being undrafted out of high school, to the marines to a 3-time All-Star reliever from 1977 to 1979. He tells us about his days in Cleveland that included playing for the first black manager in baseball history, Hall of Famer Frank Robinson and being on the same pitching staff as another Hall of Famer, Dennis Eckersley. Kern speaks fondly of many teammates including Gaylord Perry, Pat Dobson, Sparky Lyle and Boog Powell who taught this “dumbass rookie” as much about being a pitcher as anyone he ever came across. And this baseball character tells us about the best prank he ever took part in, and how Buddy Bell got his revenge! It's a bunch of laughs with one of the funniest relief pitchers of the late 70's who could throw the ball about as hard as anyone for a brief, yet electric time in Cleveland and Texas. The Detroit Tigers continue to struggle on the field, but there's still a lot to track in the final two months of the 2024 season. Can Colt Keith make a late push for American League Rookie of the Year? Can Tarik Skubal finish strong in his AL Cy Young campaign? Does Parker Meadows prove himself as the everyday center fielder of the future? Along with those topics, the Tigers have a player with MLB experience hitting in Triple-A Toledo. Is it time to recall Spencer Torkelson? After that, Jaylon Thompson, the Royals beat writer for The Kansas City Star, joins to discuss how the Royals — led by general manager J.J. Picollo — went from a 56-106 record in 2023 to postseason contenders in 2024. To wrap up, we discuss what we like about newcomers Dillon Dingler and Brant Hurter, and the latest on the Casey Mize situation. Follow Mark on X/Twitter here. Follow Evan on X/Twitter here. - Harry Wismer- Herb ScoreIn this 1958 audio clip, listeners are presented with an interview featuring Herb Score, a promising young pitcher for the Cleveland Indians, whose career was notably impacted by an injury early on. At this point in time, Score was coming off a challenging season, having been struck in the face by a line drive in May 1957, which significantly affected his playing career. Before this incident, Score was considered one of the most dominant pitchers in Major League Baseball, with a blazing fastball that led him to be named the American League Rookie of the Year in 1955 and achieving All-Star status in both 1955 and 1956. This interview likely covers his recovery process, his feelings about returning to the game, and his perspectives on the future following a severe and life-altering setback. The context of this interview is significant, as it captures a moment in baseball history where a player's career trajectory was altered in an instant, highlighting the inherent risks of the sport. It provides insight into the challenges athletes face in the aftermath of serious injuries, both physically and mentally. The year 1958 was a time of uncertainty for Score, making this interview a poignant reflection of personal resilience and the unpredictable nature of sports careers. This piece serves as an important document for understanding the human aspects of baseball, far removed from the statistics and scores, focusing instead on the individual struggles and triumphs of the players.#HerbScore #ClevelandIndians #1958Baseball #BaseballHistory #ComebackStory

From 'Baseball Isn't Boring' (subscribe here): Shohei Ohtani. Ronald Acuna Jr. Corbin Carroll. Gerrit Cole. They are all seemingly running away with their respective end-of-the-year awards. But one category that is very much up for grabs is the American League Rookie of the Year. It's made even more interesting by the sudden presence of Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas, who is coming on strong despite still living life at +3000. Bradfo sits down for an interview on the topic with the always-entertaining Casas. Description: In 1955, Herb Score set the all-time rookie record with 245 Strike Outs. A record that stood for nearly 30 Years. Herb Score was named the American League Rookie of the Year that season. It looked as if the hard throwing, left hander was headed for a hall of fame career. That all changed however, on May 7, 1957. Once considered to be a superstar in-the-making, Tom Tresh appeared poised to follow in the footsteps of his hero, Mickey Mantle, after the versatile infielder/outfielder captured American League Rookie of the Year honors in 1962. Blessed with good power and speed, the switch-hitting Tresh earned All-Star honors in each of his first two seasons, once as a shortstop and once as a leftfielder. A key contributor to one world championship team and three consecutive pennant winners during the early stages of his career, Tresh surpassed 25 homers and 90 runs scored in three of his first five seasons. Yet, Tresh eventually failed to live up to the high expectations the Yankees set for him after he flourished his first few years, leaving the game at the conclusion of the 1969 campaign, at only 31 years of age, after seeing his performance decline considerably his last few seasons.Classic Broadcasts are old-time broadcasts that have been put together from various sources. Longtime play-by-play broadcaster Dave Sims visits the Jack Vita Show for the first time! Since 2007, Dave has served as the Seattle Mariners' lead television play-by-play broadcaster, while also calling some of the team's games on the radio. He contributes to MLB Network as an analyst, and cohosts the Sirius XM radio program Basketball and Beyond with Coach K. Dave has called NFL, college football, NBA and college basketball games, while hosting various studio shows and radio shows, throughout the years. In this episode of the Jack Vita Show, Dave and Jack have a conversation about the Mariners' slow start to the season. Should fans be concerned about reigning American League Rookie of the Year Julio Rodriguez (slashing just .211/.278/.664 through 41 games)? How good can the Mariners be if Julio and Jarred Kelenic can play at peak performance at the same time? Has George Kirby overtaken Luis Castillo and become the team's ace? With the Houston Astros also off to a relatively slow start, is the American League West division in play for the Mariners this season? What is Dave's read on the Astros, Los Angeles Angels and Texas Rangers? Dave tells fun stories about his career in sports. Which athlete was he the most star-struck by? And which current major league players will make great broadcasters, upon the conclusion of their playing careers? Dave grew up in Philadelphia around Italians, a fan of Italian food and mob movies. What is Dave's all-time favorite mob movie? All this, and plenty more, in the latest episode of the Jack Vita Show!

Locked On White Sox - Daily Podcast On The Chicago White Sox
Mailbag Wednesday: How can the Chicago White Sox avoid another rebuild? After the disappointment of last season and the incomplete off-season, should White Sox fans brace for another teardown? The easy answer is that winning will hold off a rebuild but what happens if the beginning of the 2023 season is miserable? Should the Sox try to sell off what they can try to build things back up? Players like Lucas Giolito and Tim Anderson could very well be potential options. Are the off-season grades and win total projections fair? The White Sox have definitely failed once again to address all their needs and are dealing with Mike Clevinger's MLB investigation. It's been a very bad off-season. This leaves Pennsylvania as the only state with no Sunday baseball in the major leagues. https://tomsvintagebaseball.com/ On November 3, 1987 — Oakland Athletics first baseman Mark McGwire, who hit 49 home runs with 118 RBI, wins the 1987 American League Rookie of the Year Award. McGwire is the second player to win that league's award unanimously. Carlton Fisk of the Boston Red Sox was the first to do it in 1972. McGwire set a rookie record with 49 homers and was the first rookie to lead the majors in homers since Al Rosen in 1950. On November 3, 1968 — Harry Carey, trying to cross the busy Kings Highway near the Chase Park Plaza Hotel in St. Louis suffers two broken legs, a broken nose, and a dislocated shoulder when he is knocked 40 feet in the air after being struck by a car at 1:15 AM on an inclement Sunday morning. The popular Cardinals broadcaster, whose hospital room will become party central before he is discharged, will recover in time to be on the air for Opening Day. We have countless games he called, including the game where Richie Allen hit his famous blast over the Coke sign on May 29, 1965. Happy Birthday to Ken Holtzman, Born: November 3, 1945 in St. Louis, MO Holtzman was compared to Sandy Koufax early in his career. Both were left-handed, both were Jewish, and both had devastating curveballs. But that comparison was unfair to Holtzman, who went on to have an excellent career, winning 174 games in 15 seasons. The St. Louis native was involved in three big trades, one sending him from the Cubs to Oakland, one sending him from the A's to Baltimore, and the other shipping him from the Orioles to the Yankees. With the A's he joined Vida Blue and Catfish Hunter in a formidable starting rotation that led Oakland to three straight World Series titles. A crafty left-hander who preferred to induce a groundball rather than a strikeout, Holtzman won 17 or more games six times, and pitched two no-hitters. A clutch performer, Holtzman was 4-1 with a 2.54 ERA in eight World Series starts. Trivia Answer as you probably already guessed it was one of the guys I mentioned above . . . . Brewers' reliever Rollie Fingers In 78 innings, he walked just 13 and flashed a 1.04 ERA, the lowest in history for a Cy Young Award winner. He saved 28 and won six, figuring in 55% of Milwaukee's victories in the strike-shortened season. Along with the Cy Young, he will also walk away with the MVP.

Our resident Seattle sports guy, Mario Lanza (creator of The Funny 115, author of When It Was Worth Playing For, and host of the Survivor Historians and Staff Picks podcasts) returns to the Jack Vita Show for our annual baseball conversation together. This time, Mario's beloved Mariners are on the cusp of their first playoff berth since 2001, led by the soon-to-be American League Rookie of the Year. Is Julio Rodriguez the most exciting rookie in Mariners history? Mario and Jack dive deep into the Mariners' 2022 season, and assess the team's playoff chances, with just ten days remaining in the regular season. Meanwhile, the Cleveland Guardians clinched the American League Central for the fourth time in seven years, Sunday. If the season ended today, the Mariners would travel to Cleveland for a best-of-three Wild Card Series. Would the Mariners be better off playing the Guardians, or moving up to the no. 4 or 5 seed to face either the Toronto Blue Jays or Tampa Bay Rays? Mario and Jack have a discussion about Aaron Judge's phenomenal 2022 campaign, as he is just one home run shy of tying Roger Maris' single-season American League home run record, and Judge currently leads the American League in all three Triple Crown categories. Is Judge's 2022 season the single most impressive season from an offensive player, even more impressive than Barry Bonds' 2001 season? The Kansas City Royals' Bobby Witt Jr. is having a terrific season, and in most years his numbers, like becoming the fifth rookie to hit at least 20 home runs and steal 20 bases, would make him the top candidate for the American League Rookie of the Year award. But it's looking like an uphill challenge for Witt, with Julio Rodriguez of the Seattle Mariners also posting a 20/20 season and putting up other big numbers. On today's SportsBeat KC podcast, beat writer Lynn Worthy looks at Witt's chances as the top rookie award along with several other topics, like how the Royals will handle players coming off the injured list this week. Hosted by Paul C. Cuthbert and Tab Bamford. Welcome to July, where most teams are crossing the mid-way point of the 2022 season. The guys look at an updated Top 100 prospects list, discuss the dominance of Miami's Sandy Alcantara and give the Astros some flowers for their recent run of incredible play. This week's good goes to Tab's preseason American League Rookie of the Year pick, Julio Rodriguez. He's absolutely crushing the ball right now and making history along the way. Could he be a 30-30 guy as a rookie? It's looking increasingly likely. The bad this week discusses the Mets inability to run away with the National League East -- again. And, as always, stay tuned for this week's Line Drive Radio Fantasy Add of the Week. Follow everywhere @linedriveradio.
In Episode 216, Jeffrey and Craig don't have any banter at all and then discuss five mostly baseball topics.1. Sorry We Missed You, Tigers: We chat about Patrick Dubuque's article on Detroit's rebuild and where they go from here.2. Sorry We Missed You, Pirates: Yeah, okay there is a reason we didn't talk about some of these teams for the first six weeks of the season.3. Sorry We Missed You, Athletics: You can't say they don't have nice uniforms.4. Around the Horn: More nice uniforms, the same number of pitchers, and we check in on the American League Rookie of the Year race.5. What to Watch: The Mets/Phillies already aren't disappointing if you are into that. If you aren't, some key divisional showdowns. My guest on this episode of Nobody’s Safe w/Brady Laber is Mike Kashirsky. “Kash” is currently a batting practice pitcher for the Chicago White Sox and a college basketball official. However, I feel like this audience will be more in tune with his time coaching the Windy City Thunderbolts (https://www.wcthunderbolts.com) of the independent Frontier League (https://frontierleague.com). “Kash” played college baseball at St. Joseph College in the late 1990’s. St. Joe’s was a great D-II program based in the Great Lakes Valley Conference until the school closed in 2017. The Pumas were national runners-up in 1996 behind the arm of pitcher Rick O’Dette (https://saintleolions.com/sports/baseball/roster/coaches/rick-o-dette/118). Kash talks about some of his teammates including O’Dette who would later become the head coach and is now the skipper at St. Leo University, and Jason Becker who coached with Kash at Roosevelt University. The late Brandon Hardy was also on those teams and Kash tells a great story about Brandon and how St. Joe’s created the Brandon Hardy Award. Kash played some professional baseball including a stint with the Cook County Cheetahs of the independent Frontier League. His initial meeting with his manager, former big league outfielder Ron LeFlore, (https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lefloro01.shtml) was a memorable one. LeFlore was arrested in 1999 for failure to pay child support by Kash’s father who was a police officer. LeFlore understood the situation and didn’t hold a grudge but he didn’t forget that interaction. When Kash reported to the team one year after the arrest LeFlore call him into his office. LeFlore joking told Kash to take his stuff and leave but after the initial shock told Kash he was kidding and explained he and Kash’s father had become friendly after the arrest. The Cheetahs rebrand to the Windy City Thunderbolts (https://twitter.com/WCThunderBolts) and in 2004 Kash is named to the coaching staff. He reminisces fondly about his rommates and fellow staff member Joe Charboneau (https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/charbjo01.shtml). Charboneau was quite a character who was the 1980 American League Rookie of the Year for the Cleveland Indians. Brent Bowers managed the team in 2005 and 2006 and Will Flynt was the pitching coach and Kash tells great stories about both of his friends that he is on the T-Bolts staff with during his early years with the team. Andy Haines becomes the manager in Windy City in 2007 and the team has one of the best seasons in Frontier League history. That team won a Frontier League (https://twitter.com/FLProBaseball) record 68 games on its was to the championship. Kash beomes the interim manager during the 2008 campaign and takes a struggling team on quite a ride. The team goes on a 37-14 to end the regular season with 60 wins and another Western Division title. Kash looks back on that memorable 2008 Frontier League playoffs starting with winning a tough division round win over the favored Southern Illinois Miners. The 2008 championship series will be most remember for the flood that happened in Kalamazoo just before the start of the series. Four inches on water deemed Homer Stryker Field as being unplayable and the entire series was moved to Standard Bank Ballpark which was called the Thunder Dome. Kash talks about working as a bench coach in 2009 with Tommy Thompson and finally becoming the full time manager for the 2010 and 2011 season. Kash left Windy City as the all-time leader in wins (141), since broken by Ron Biga, and his jersey number is retired at the ballpark. In 2013, Kash is hired by the Chicago White Sox as the left handed batting practice pitcher. Kash talks about being in the big leagues and working with some of the best hitters in the game. We also talk about three players that Brady has worked with in the past Adam Eaton (https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/e/eatonad02.shtml), Charlie Leesman (https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/leesmch01.shtml) and Nate Jones (https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/j/jonesna01.shtml) who all played for the Cincinnati Steam (https://twitter.com/CincinnatiSteam) of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League (https://twitter.com/GLSCL). We finish up the conversation talking about being a college basketball official. His start as a referee is a humble one on the high school level working his way to small college and now mid major college level. Former St. Joe’s pitching coach Bo Boroski, who has referred Big Ten games and in the NCAA tournament, helped break Kash into the business doing high school games in the Rensaleer, Indiana area. Kash is a very engaging and funny guy and his success has clearly not changed him a bit over the years. Ron grew up a baseball obsessed boy in Gary Indiana. After high school he set off to make a career for himself as an Iron Worker in the Steel Mills. On a whim he made his way to a local baseball field for an MLB tryout. He made such an impression (a literal impression - you'll have to listen to hear how) that the Dodgers signed him shortly after the tryout. This is where the story gets started. Ron talks about the time he broke his neck and was temporarily paralyzed, which forced him out of baseball. He talks of the once in a million meeting that led to his comeback. This all happened before he hit 35 home runs and won ROY in 1983. He even shares the story of his clubhouse dust up with Rickey Henderson.
Joey Wendle was one of DII's most accomplished players as he played four solid seasons at West Chester University which concluded with him leading the Golden Rams to the 2012 national title. Following the season he was selected in the sixth round by the Cleveland Indians and made a steady ascent to the major leagues. He made his MLB debut in 2016 and played his first full season in 2018 when he batted .300 and finished fourth in the American League Rookie of the Year voting for the Tampa Bay Rays. In this episode of the 123 Inning College Baseball Podcast we talk about how he went from a scrawny 100 lb prep player to full time MLB star, and for some reason, big-cat rights activist Carole Baskin.

Roy Sievers was one of the most clutch hitters in baseball history. In fact, Sievers, who won the 1949 American League Rookie of the Year with the St. Louis Browns, hit nearly a quarter of his 318 career homeruns in the eighth inning or later. But, becoming a clutch hitter almost didn’t happen. After winning the ROY in 1949, Sievers fell into a slump and that was followed by a devastating right-shoulder injury that almost cost him his career. In fact, during the four-year stretch of 1950 through 1953, Sievers played in just 247 games and hit just 19 homeruns. But, Browns owner Bill Veeck worked hard with Sievers to help him overcome the injury, and Sievers did just that. After Veeck sold the Browns, the team moved to Baltimore and Sievers was traded to the Washington Senators. Great news for Washington, not so good for the new Baltimore Orioles. Sievers, not only recovered, he became one of the most feared sluggers in baseball. Over the course of the next 10-years, Sievers connected for 275 homeruns including an American League leading and career best 42 in 1957 to go along with 114 RBI. Sievers was named to five all-star teams and three times finished in the top-5 for MVP voting. Greg Wolf, the co-Director of the BioProject for SABR, and a frequent guest on Sports’ Forgotten Heroes, returns to the podcast for a wonderful discussion on Sievers, the Browns, Bill Veeck and more. Wolf, by the way, just finished working on a new book, “Wrigley Field, The Friendly Confines at Clark and Addison” and you can pick up a copy by visiting SABR.org or Amazon.
