I am joined by Jessica Opon. Jess has been working in post production for several years now. Starting out as an assistant editor for Defy Media in LA, she worked her way up to being an editor at Vice Media in New York, where she was a piece of the group of “Charlottesville: Race and Terror”, which won an Emmy. She also became an integral part of the production process as a shooter and producer. Now working as a freelancer, her main focus is editing, but brings her knowledge of producing and shooting to her work. She is an editor for the incredible cooking channel, Binging with Babish, starring Andrew Rae, her partner. She was also a fellow dancer, and you can tell that her background as a professional dancer becomes immediately apparent in the delicate, expertly choreographed stories she weaves behind both the camera and the editing desk. Absolutely loved chatting with Jess. She's such a wise and beautiful person. We talked about the dance world and not so great relationships with food and image, switching industries and going into production and editing, working on YouTube, how editing and dance is more connected than you might think, advice she has for going into the production/entertainment industry, learning to trust yourself, and end with some fun rapid fires like some of the projects she's most proud of! Hope you enjoy

The Safety of Work
Ep.95 Do Take-5 risk assessments contribute to safe work?

Assessing the Influence of “Take 5” Pre-Task Risk Assessments on Safety” by Jop Havinga, Mohammed Ibrahim Shire,  and our own Andrew Rae.  The paper was just published in “Safety,” - an international, peer-reviewed, open-access journal of industrial and human health safety published quarterly online by MDPI. The paper's abstract reads: This paper describes and analyses a particular safety practice, the written pre-task risk assessment commonly referred to as a “Take 5”. The paper draws on data from a trial at a major infrastructure construction project. We conducted interviews and field observations during alternating periods of enforced Take 5 usage, optional Take 5 usage, and banned Take 5 usage. These data, along with evidence from other field studies, were analysed using the method of Functional Interrogation. We found no evidence to support any of the purported mechanisms by which Take 5 might be effective in reducing the risk of workplace accidents. Take 5 does not improve the planning of work, enhance worker heedfulness while conducting work, educate workers about hazards, or assist with organisational awareness and management of hazards. Whilst some workers believe that Take 5 may sometimes be effective, this belief is subject to the “Not for Me” effect, where Take 5 is always believed to be helpful for someone else, at some other time. The adoption and use of Take 5 is most likely to be an adaptive response by individuals and organisations to existing structural pressures. Take 5 provides a social defence, creating an auditable trail of safety work that may reduce anxiety in the present, and deflect blame in the future. Take 5 also serves a signalling function, allowing workers and companies to appear diligent about safety.  Discussion Points:Drew, how are you feeling with just a week of comments and reactions coming in?If people are complaining that the study is not big enough, great! That means people are interestedIntroduction of Jop Havinga, and his top-level framing of the studyWhy do we do the ‘on-off' style of research? We saw no difference in results when cards were mandatory, or optional, or bannedPerplexingly, some cards are filled out before getting to the job, and some after the job is complete, when there is no need for the cardOne way cards may be helpful is simply creating a mindfulness and heedfulness about proceduresThe “Not for Me” effect– people believe the cards may be good for others, but not necessary for selvesResearch criticisms like, “how can you actually tell people are paying attention or not?”The Take 5 cards serve as a protective layer for management and workers looking to avoid blameMain takeaway:  Stop using Take 5s in accident investigations, as they provide no real data, and they may even be detrimental– as in “safety clutter”Send us your suggestions for future episodes, we are actively looking! Quotes:“You always get taken by surprise when people find other ways to criticize [the research.] I think my favorite criticism is people who immediately hit back by trying to attack the integrity of the research.” - Dr. Drew“So this link between behavioral psychology and safety science is sometimes very weak, it's sometimes just a general idea of applying incentives.” - Dr. Drew “When someone says, ‘we introduced Take 5's and we reduced our number of accidents by 50%,' that is nonsense. There is no [one] safety intervention in the world where you could have that level of change and be able to see it.” - Dr. Drew“It's really hard to argue that these Take 5s lead to actual better planning of the work they're conducting.” - Dr. Jop Havinga“What we saw is just a total disconnect – the behavior happens without the Take 5s, the Take 5s happen without the behavior. The two NEVER actually happened at the same time.” - Dr. Drew “Considering that Take 5 cards are very generic, they will rarely contain anything new for somebody.” - Dr. Jop Havinga“Often the people who are furthest removed from the work are most satisfied with Take 5s and most reluctant to get rid of them.” - Dr. Drew  Resources:Link to the PaperThe Safety of Work PodcastThe Safety of Work on LinkedInFeedback@safetyofwork

Spice up your Monday morning as we introduce our number of the week - 14; chunk of the week - ay; mystery country clue and much more! This episode includes activities for a variety of ages - the target ages being 4-8, as it’s a family-style meeting with a little something for everyone. Children four and under should have coloring or quiet toys available for them so they can play while listening to the activities for older siblings. Older siblings should encourage the little ones with their activities. You will need: 1) a world map or globe 2) a piece of paper and crayons/colored pencils to draw with; 3) math manipulatives to count with - these can be beads, dry pasta, rocks, etc.; 4) paper, a marker board, or blackboard to write out new words/math problems as needed. Optional: manipulative letters (wooden/magnetic).This podcast is a flexible tool to give parents ideas and organization. Parents are encouraged to listen to the podcast ahead of time and consider their children’s ages and learning styles as they decide whether to:1) listen to the show along with their children, stopping and starting it as needed to figure out math problems and discuss questions at their children’s pace, or2) simply create their own morning meeting based on the episode, selecting the activities that will work for their children and teaching them with manipulatives. You know your child best! Visual and hands-on learners will benefit from seeing the concepts we discuss written out, and using manipulatives wherever possible! We also invite you to borrow or purchase some books that will go along with our themes during the rest of the week*:The first is Neo Leo: The Ageless Ideas of Leonardo Da Vinci, by Gene Barretta – this book is a simple one with a few sentences per page, and it's interesting for all ages. The next is My Crazy Inventions Sketchbook: 50 Awesome Drawing Activities for Young Inventors by Lisa Regan and Andrew Rae. This book will inspire the imaginations of elementary-aged children, and challenge them to sketch new inventions - hours and hours of creating! *We are in no way affiliated with these authors, books or publishers, but have enjoyed them as a family.

On this week's episode, Derek and Andy W. are back with a Publisher Spotlight, and this time the focus is on Nobrow Press and their fall 2014 releases. This relatively small, UK-based publisher may be off of many readers' radar, but they put out a lot of great books, as this week's show will attest. First, the guys discuss Jesse Moynihan's Forming II, the follow up 2011's strange, whacked-out creation narrative Forming. They are fascinated with the myth that Moynihan has created, and they especially love the artist's sense of humor. Next, Derek and Andy move on to Moonhead and the Music Machine, a new graphic novel by Andrew Rae. They highlight Rae's clean, vivid art style, and they speculate on whether or not this book was intended for a younger -- or at least all-age -- readership. Next on the guys' plate is Roman Muradov's (In a Sense) Lost and Found. This is a striking, Kafkaesque narrative with an uneven, dream-like quality. The intended murkiness of the tale may complement the dark palette that Muradov uses, as the guys find many of his images difficult to decipher. Bianca Bagnarelli's Fish is the next book they discuss, a short story -- perhaps more of an emotional vignette -- that is part of the 17x23 series, Nobrow's graphic short story project designed to introduce young artists to a wider readership. Andy and Derek then move on to Corinne Maier and Anne Simon's graphic biography, Marx, which looks at the (surprisingly bourgeois) life behind the famous philosopher/economist, and then they look at Behold! The Dinosaurs!, Dustin Harbin's beautiful concertina that challenges the guys' definition of "comics." Finally, your tireless hosts look at Jamie Coe's Art Schooled -- one of the most sophisticated narrative styles of the week, and definitely Derek's favorite -- and then another graphic biography, Robert Moses: The Master Builder of New York City. There are eight books discussed in all, and this show has to be extra long this week to get in everything. Come and enjoy the creamy filling that is The Comics Alternative!
