Carol Ann Reid Shares Her ABCDE Formula; Improving Mental Health in the Work Place, Increasing Our Awareness & Developing Our Courage

Business Mastermind Podcast

In this episode, Gavin Preston talks to transformational life-coach, author and speaker Carol Ann Reid, who candidly discusses mental health, brain-heart coherence, the highs and lows of social media, mindfulness and her ground-breaking ABCDE Formula designed to allow you to tap into the warrior within.  This empowering, insightful and ultimately reflective conversation will be of benefit to everyone interested in the fascinating topic of the human experience and how to improve it in small, practical ways.  KEY TAKEAWAYS We spend an average of 50% of our waking hours in the workplace. For self-employed people, that number is even higher. As a result, there has been a sharp increase in mental health issues in and around the workplace. Part of Carol’s message is to help people understand that no one is defined by their past, or by the mistakes they’ve made. These are all lessons, and should be embraced. By doing so we come to realise that there is a warrior within us all. One of the main issues driving a low sense of self-worth is the constant and all-encompassing access to comparison. We may be on our own path, but one look to the left or right will show us several others who are doing it better, and are more successful. The answer to this is resilience, and an ability to keep our eyes on our own path. Fitting everything into one day can sometimes seem impossible. Carol works on the principle that there are 72 x 20 minute periods in every day. If we can’t take one of those 20 minutes in the morning for ourselves, and one in the afternoon, then we are a slave to the system. A useful method for stamping out our personal obsessions with our lack of time or self-worth is to put a rubber band on our wrists. Each time these negative thoughts enter our head, snap the band and remind ourselves that we do have the time, that we are worthy, and that we can do this. If we feel that we are becoming overwhelmed with internal chaos, we can usually discern the main problems by “brain-dumping” or journalling our thoughts. By doing this, it often becomes clear that this mess of a million problems is actually a small handful that once identified can be ordered and tackled. Carol’s Warrior Code System, built on ABCDE is: A - Awareness - An awareness of what’s going on around us as well as self-awareness (emotionally and physically) B - Belief - Belief in one’s self and belief in the process. C - Courage - The courage to stand in the face of fear and become D - Discipline - The discipline of honouring ourselves. With discipline comes results. E - Evolve - Evolution is the cumulative result of these steps. Trust that it will come. Change is always better and easier to maintain if we take it in small increments. Changes need to fit into our lives, not the other way around. This is a practice that should be applied to business as well as life. And give yourselves credit for these small changes. We have to give ourselves permission to be kind to ourselves. There’s a constant urging for us to do more, be more, achieve more. Remember that we are only here once, and it’s our duty to enjoy life. Recognise how far you’ve come. BEST MOMENTS ‘You can change aesthetically, you can change your appearance, your environment, but wow does it come down to what’s going on internally’ ‘I’m going to do whatever it takes to help as many people as I can’ ‘Your past doesn’t have to be your future’ ‘It’s like trying to ride a bike but looking to the left and right. We get wobbly’ ‘Our health is our priority’ ‘I’ve got this. I’ve got this is such a key one’ ‘Be a victor rather than a victim of the circumstance’ ‘We are human beings, not human doings' VALUABLE RESOURCES  The Business Mastermind Podcast  www.carolannreid.com Carol Ann Reid - Facebook Carol Ann Reid – Twitter Carol Ann Reid - Instagram   ABOUT THE HOST Gavin Preston  Gavin is an inspirational Speaker, Business Strategist, Business Growth Mentor, Trainer and high-performance Coach.  He works with Business Owners and Entrepreneurs and has a strong track record in creating creative strategies to accelerate the growth of their business. Guest: Carol-Ann Reid Age: 30 years Location: Manchester, United Kingdom Bio: Carol-Ann Reid is an international Life Coach, NLP Master Practitioner, Radio Presenter and Motivational Speaker from the UK. She believes that through self-awareness, a clear vision and collective consciousness, we can each be living the life that we are destined for, and co-create a positive movement around the world. It all starts with you! Having lost her Step Dad to suicide and her best friend to cancer within just 18 months, she found herself with two choices; breakdown and lose herself in the anxiety and guilt, or get up and do whatever it takes to help other people with their mindset and being light into darkness. Carol-Ann now specializes in helping people create a life free from anxiety, lack of self-belief and feeling stuck, by helping to re-create their self-identity and ignite their happiness from within. The “Warrior Within” movement supports those who are ready to step into their power and “Awaken the Warrior Within”. Thus resulting in increasing their happiness, finances, and freedom both physically, spiritually and mentally. The World Needs More: 1. Authenticity 2. Spiritual Warriors Wow Factor: My WOW factor is my ability to help people expand their way of thinking and create positive change. A few moments that helped shape it over the years sound painful, they were at the time but I now see them as lessons and I am grateful for the experiences. They were the platform which I needed to fall down on before rebuilding stronger than I was before. I was held against my will in an apartment for 3 days when I was 20, I was made to take drugs and physically assaulted. I had to escape from where I was, which was one of my wake up calls! I began rebuilding my life which lead me to discover the power of self-identity and internal happiness. I lost my stepdad to suicide a few years ago and this opened up my eyes to the power of the mind and the impact our thinking and self-talk has on our lives. This led me to dedicate my career to learning about mindset, neuroscience, spirituality and I became a mindset coach specializing in CBT and NLP. Helping others overcome their negative self-talk, discovering who they truly are and awaken the Warrior Within. Favorite Color: Yellow

Carry On Friends is a platform that provides content and programming to support the development and success of Caribbean-Americans in corporate work and entrepreneurship. She hosts the Carry On Friends Podcast, one of the first podcasts to solely feature Caribbean-American entrepreneurs and business professionals. The podcast had been featured as an editor’s choice in iTunes under the categories “Black Voices in Business” and the “Black Experience” collection.  “When your hand is in the lion’s mouth . . .” What do you do when someone else holds the power over your situation? Kerry-Ann has a Jamaican quote that sums up her experience in an immigrant family that faced challenges and extreme adjustments in chasing their dreams in the US. Sometimes you find yourself in a situation beyond your control and you must take the time to change things slowly. Kerry-Ann shares some of the courageous actions her mother took to keep her family together and bring them safely to America. TWEET: When your hand is in the lion’s mouth, take your time and pull it out. @carryonkerry Figuring it out: Have you been in the place of not being understood? Kerry-Ann was a young person of color working in the corporate world, trying hard to figure out proper behavior and how to be understood. At each level of achievement, she faced challenges, especially the challenges of the American work culture, which differed from her homeland of Jamaica. TWEET: Take #inspiration from others, but make it your own. @carryonkerry Just be YOU: We’ve all felt it, haven’t we? The pressure of trying to be “someone else.” Kerry-Ann has learned to cater to her own audience because they are unique for specific reasons. She shares that we all need to find compassion for ourselves and allow ourselves the time we need. Her advice is to be in the space to chase YOUR dreams and “just be YOU.” TWEET: Allow yourself the time you need for a mental break. @carryonkerry Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take—“Write it down and make it visible. Time stamp it and go back to it. It will help you realize your greatness.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [1:25] How Aimee met Kerry-Ann at Podcast Movement [4:18] The experiences of being part of an immigrant family [7:06] “The lion’s mouth” [11:02] Dreams—as an immigrant [13:02] Helping others: the inspiration for Carry On Friends [21:00] The reception to Kerry-Ann’s platform [26:29] Cater to YOUR audience [33:30] Don’t be jealous of others [37:51] Be true to yourself [40:38] ONE action for a dream chaser   RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE EPISODE: Kerry’s Website Kerry on Twitter  Kerry on Instagram   TWEETS YOU CAN USE: TWEET: Don’t be jealous; you don’t know what others went through to get where they are. @carryonkerry TWEET: Chase your #dreams, but most importantly, just be YOU! @carryonkerry

In recent decades, there have been countless infringements, and attempted infringements, upon accurate science education across the country. The "war on science" in national politics has nothing on the war playing out every day in public schools, even if the latter is usually less visible. The attacks are diverse and ever-changing, showing an array of tactics and strategies that almost rivals biological life itself. "If nothing else evolves," explains evolution defender Eugenie Scott on this week’s episode, "religion does. Creationism does."Scott spoke to us on an auspicious occasion: She is stepping down as the director of the National Center for Science Education (NCSE), an organization she founded in her basement 27 years ago, and that has since become the chief tracker of attacks on science education across the US. Joining the conversation was Scott's successor Ann Reid, who led the sequencing of the 1918 flu virus at the Army Institute of Pathology in the mid 2000s, and most recently served as director of the American Academy of Microbiology. This week’s episode also features a discussion looking back at the science in the last three State of the Union addresses, and examines a recent science-of-memory study, which suggests walking through doorways might actually be making us forget things.Subscribe:itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/inquiring-minds/id711675943feeds.feedburner.com/inquiring-minds
