The adventure then turned into a book and as a business consultant it became both a business and running book and is available on Amazon via this link: 12 Business Lessons from Running an Ultra Marathon. My run raised over £7000 for Childrens Hospice South West Music Therapy programme and every book bought on Amazon generates another £5 for the programme.     My big running goal remains the Arc of Attrition 50 in January 2025. The Running 44@60 podcast began as a learning / motivational tool for host Trevor Lee in his quest to run a first ever ultra - the Classic Quarter in 2021 - here's the story of Running 44@60 It now has over 140 episodes and is aimed at those thinking about and committing to their first ever ultra.Trevor wrote a book : 12 Business Lessons from Running an Ultra Marathon - all proceeds go to the Children's Hospice South West

In this episode, David is joined by Annie Vernon, an Olympic silver medallist and two-time world champion rower who spent over a decade at the top of Britain´s most successful Olympic sport. She explains how she made the transition from athlete to lobbying for the National Farmers Union before changing track and pursuing a portfolio career as a leadership & development coach, writer, and public speaker. Annie shares details of this journey which includes advice on how anyone can improve their performance and that of their team. KEY TAKEAWAYS People who are a step or two ahead of you are excellent role models. Take full ownership of what you are doing. Only you can grab an opportunity and make the most of it. Sometimes there is no silver lining. In that situation, you just have to accept that things have gone badly, learn from it, and move on. No matter how hard you try there will always be things you can´t master 100%. Be prepared to work closely with others who can bridge those gaps. Regularly review the strengths of your team, then retrain and recruit to fill the gaps. Sometimes you won´t have all of the information available, don´t um and err. Just make a decision, then commit to making it happen. Athletes are not superhuman, they are normal people. The best businesses have total synergy between their values and outcomes. BEST MOMENTS ‘In team sports, the coach is almost always going to be bigger than the athletes.' ‘You just have to make a decision, then make that the right decision.' ‘Failing in pursuit of something we really care about is something to be proud of.' ‘There are ways of disagreeing with each other.'   EPISODE RESOURCES Mind Games by Annie Vernon - https://www.amazon.co.uk/stores/Annie-Vernon/author/B07NJNM6ZQ   ABOUT THE SHOW People with purpose make a difference. Today I am joined by the 2x World Champion and Olympic Silver Medalist in rowing, Annie Vernon. After an incredibly successful 10 year career, Annie has taken her interest in peak performance and and studied many of the world`s greatest athletes for her phenomenal book Mind Games, trying to understand what sets them apart from the rest. And that`s exactly what we`ll talk about today: How to develop the psychology of an elite athlete to thrive in all areas of your life! Max Out Insights: You`re always competing - against yourself or somebody else Competition can bring out the best in us - World Records aren`t set in training, but in the Olympic final with the whole world watching Competition can also bring out the worst in us - when we start comparing ourselves to others or previous or idealized versions of ourselves, base our self-worth on our performance, or neglect other areas of life In elite sports, the highs are very high and the lows are very low As an athlete, you create your own reality and self-justify your odd lifestyle to be able to stick with it, even if the rest of the world doesn`t understand The most important and difficult challenge is achieving your true potential Belief is a choice - you choose what you want to believe and then convince yourself of that new reality Max Out Quotes: “People don`t set world records in training, they set world records in the Olympic final.” “Sport is something you do, but it doesn`t define who you are.” “Do you stand on the starting line actually believing you can win the race?”

What is confidence and how you can develop it with Olympic rower Annie Vernon. Annie won silver at Beijing in 2008, which was actually a huge disappointment for her, as she had expected to collect gold. However, it did prompt her to write the book Mind Game, which explores the psychology of elite sport, so every cloud and all that. In it, Annie spoke to more than 60 elite athletes, coaches and psychologists from diverse sports to find out their secrets, and one area she explored was confidence. Generally speaking, it is the feeling or belief that you can rely on someone or something, but beyond that it's quite tricky to define. Annie found that some elite athletes and coaches refuse to use the word at all, preferring to focus on things like composure or momentum. Annie explains that confidence isn't the absence of self-doubt, it's about being 'good enough'. Annie outlines the 9 sources of confidence in sport, and reveals It's about self-questioning rather than being self-critical, and a good barometer of your confidence is actually your ability to say no.

The series that looks at current events through the lens of psychology. Michael Blastland explores the quirky ways in which we humans think, behave and make decisions. In this week's programme, a question of trust - why do people have a tendency to distrust experts and expertise? It has been made much of in the UK's Brexit campaign to leave the European Union. 'People in this country have had enough of experts,' claimed Leave campaigner Michael Gove. What's behind this lack of faith in authority? The Zoo team discover that the difficulty of evaluating expertise is a problem we all face - because to really understand what's going on, you have to know what you don't know, and it's easier to spot the flaws in other people's reasoning and knowledge than to see it in ourselves. But then forecasting is a tricky business, and the experts don't always get it right. So, who to trust? Michael Blastland is joined by resident Human Zoo psychologist Nick Chater, Professor of Behavioural Science at Warwick Business School, and roving reporter Timandra Harkness. Guests this week include David Dunning, professor of psychology at the University of Michigan; Professor Barbara Mellers from the University of Pennsylvania; journalist turned teacher Steve McCormack; and Olympic silver medalist and two-time world champion rower Annie Vernon. Producer: Eve Streeter A Pier production for BBC Radio 4.
