Happy Holidays! New episodes with incredible guests are coming out January 11th - in the meantime, here's a revisit of one of 2023's most shared episode … season two, episode 25 - Eric Murray!!

The Great Coaches: Leadership & Life

Noel Donaldson is a rowing coach. He was a coxswain and competed at the 1979 world championships and then transitioned in to coaching in 1980.In the 1990 in began coaching Australia's Oarsome Foursome, who won Olympic Golds in 1992 and 1996 and 5 world championships. He also coached Georgina Douglas to World Championships in 1998 and 1999. In 2013 became the coach of the New Zealand team of Hamish Bond and Eric Murray who also won back to back Olympic Gold medals.Noel is a serial winning coach whose wisdom transcends sport. Some of the key highlights of the interview are: The importance on treating each new campaign as something separate from the last one. And setting goals that are appropriate for that team, not simply reflecting on the past to set future expectations. How the ‘Oarsome Foursome' would go about debriefing after a performance and importantly how they had the ability to switch on and off, which is something that he thinks is lacking a little today with athletes. His learning as he has matured as a coach that winning at all costs can cause mental health challenges that end up meaning that winning is only temporary. If you would like to send us any feedback or if you know a great coach, who has a unique story to share, then we would love to hear from you, please contact us at paul@thegreatcoachespodcast.com or contact us through our website thegreatcoachespodcast.com Hosted on Acast. Eric Murray is one of the most decorated Kiwi athletes of all-time. The 2x Olympic Rowing Gold Medalist and 8x World Rowing Champion doesn't compete anymore, but it's hard to keep him away from the sport. He's now involved in coaching, and advises rowing organizations both locally and globally. In this episode, we discuss Eric's fascinating climb to the peak of his sport, the lessons he learned along the way, as well as how to be and stay successful. As a 'chubby' kid from Pukekohe, Eric took up rowing at school, but is the first to admit he wasn't very good — while strong and fit, he lacked the technique needed to compete on the world stage. Still, he persevered. And after 8 years of juggling work, study and training, Eric finally got his opportunity. And he took it.I hope you will find Eric's story as inspiring as I have. In Episode Two of Broken Oars University, Broken Oars Podcast's Northern One explores fundamental equivalences between being a rower, and the discipline, practice and craft of rowing and being a musician, and the discipline, practice and craft of music.   Looking at the cultural location and narratives of both, this episode looks at how we self-identify with what resonates with us; the learning trajectory of both disciplines; the importance of mechanical practice and how that leads us to states of grace in both.   Taking in figures in both arenas from Eric Murray and Helen Glover to Maxim Vengerov and Eddie Van Halen to Johnny Dawes and Eugene Ysaye, although it does get into aspects of the psychology of the self, emotional response and spiritual ground, the idea that being a rower and rowing and being a musician and playing music possess core fundamental equivalences is not as big a reach as you think; and it's not as woo as you might fear.   If you've ever been in a boat when it's really moving, if you've ever played in a band when it's really cooking ... ? You're feeling the same thing and you got there the same way.   Get Some!   This episode of Broken Oars has no swearing in it, and is safe to play around children.    (Please click the link here for the Two Set Violin and Maxim Vengerov masterclass, which starts at 31.26 in their clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsbA5KDChZw

I thought you were all about celebrating the everyday rower!” We are. And we always will be. But we have to admit that when Eric reached out and asked to be on the podcast, we had a total fan moment. There was no doubt we'd invite him for a chat. From humble beginnings as an awkward teenage athlete, Eric quickly discovered that being 6'5” translated into impressive erg splits. Coaches noticed too, and he soon found himself on the podium at U16 and U17 events. From there, it was a one way ticket to the national team, World Rowing Championships, and the Olympics. Between 2007 and 2015, a commitment to be the very best brought Eric four indoor rowing world records, eight World Rowing Championships, and two Olympic gold medals. Retired from flat water rowing since 2017, Eric is keeping himself very busy working with Concept2, the Asensei rowing app, and is a member of the World Rowing Indoor Rowing Commission. Champion Olympic rower Eric Murray backs an action plan aimed at improving the mental health and wellbeing of high-performance athletes. The plan released yesterday by Cycling New Zealand and High Performance Sport New Zealand, promises greater transparency about key processes. The report made more than 90 recommendations, including various wellbeing initiatives, and the appointment of a Women's Health Lead. It follows the death last year of cyclist Olivia Podmore, who was a close friend of Murray's. Murray spoke to Corin Dann.

"A Kiwi man and a Canadian man walk into a bar in Switzerland with a swan..." It sounds like the beggining of an average joke, but this actually happened!  Before he was a famous Olympic gold medalist and reality TV star, Eric Murray and a mate "borrowed" a swan from a lake and took it to a bar. If you enjoy this snippet, please listen to the full interview with Eric Murray Thanks,  Dom.

In August last year one of Erics best friends took her own life.  Olivia Podmore was just 24.  Her and Eric had spent the weekend in Queenstown then returned home to Cambridge together, visitng her mum on the way.  He was the last person to see her alive and one of the first people to find her after she lost her battle with mental illness. Her final Instagram post detailed her frustrations with high perfornace sport in New Zealand. In this bite size clip taken from Erics podcast conversation we chat openly about mental health, their friendship, their final weekend together and his thoughts now with the benefit of 9 months of hindsight. Its not an easy listen!  But talk about this stuff can lead to change, and change is what we need. This is part one of my very first ever two part podcast.  Eric came over and we just yarned for over two hours so I decided to split it in two.   I do need to include a warning here- towards the end we get into a fairly intense discussion about mental health and depression, and in particular the suicide of his good friend Olivia Podmore last year. If you find any of this triggering, here are some numbers you can call to reach out: Text HELP to 4357 Or call 0800 LIFELINE (0800 54 33 54) Thanks a million to my pals at Em's Power Cookies for powering this episode.  Check them out at Powercookies.com

Eric Murray is one of the greatest New Zealand Olympians of all time.  Hamish Bond and him won 2 gold medals for their rowing and were unbeaten for 69 consecutive races which is mindblowing. In this wide ranging conversation we cover so much ground- rowing, running, his reasons for going on Dancing with the stars, his relationship with marajuana, Celebrity Treasure Island, charity boxing, mental health, divorce, the tragic death of his friend Olivia Podmore, raising an autistic child and much much more.   This is possibly my favourite conversation I've done since I launched this podcast...that may be because Eric turned up with a 6 pack and a bottle of wine (which we consumed every last drop of). But also because for such a well known sporting legend, he is so unfiltered and honest about everything! know you guys will ove this one and I can't wait to share it. PS:  Eric asked me to ask YOU to text "ERIC" to 3333 to keep him on DWTS (even though he is terrible haha)

Kia Ora e te whānau. It's hot, eh? This week we've got another greatest hit for you. In fact, not that we really pay attention to the numbers, but we have our most popular episode on DCR ever, Number 83 with the legendary Scotty Stevenson. It was hot the night that we recorded the podcast. Scotty walked into Eugene's lounge dressed up to the nines in full TV makeup (having just left the tele to come do the pod) and proceeded to lay down one of the most engaging, honest, and entertaining hours that we ever recorded.Scotty StevensonA broadcaster and journalist best known for his rugby commentary and reporting which makes him automatically one of the most well-known New Zealand TV personalities. He's a sports journalist with TVNZ, and also works with Spark Sport and Radio Hauraki, commentating on cricket and the America's Cup. He's also a sports writer, has ghost-written and written a string of some of the best sports books, from Straight 8 about Kieran Read, to Kiwi Pair about Eric Murray and Hamish Bond. Scotty has been previously known by his childhood nickname “Sumo” as, by his own account he was the “fat kid in speedos” at surf lifesaving. But things have changed. If you were to Google Scotty Stevenson, the number one thing that pops up on auto-search is “Scotty Stevenson weight loss”. It's because Stevenson has changed. Markedly. He has noticeably shrunk. And for those who've been watching closely, he started running. He's kept very quiet about it, but goodness me, the man is well and truly hooked. Three years ago, he couldn't run 85m. In 2019, he ran 85km, no less, through backcountry New Zealand in the Old Ghost Ultra in just over 12 hours. For those who saw the TVNZ report he did on the event, you'll know that he found it an extremely emotional experience. We talked to Scotty about that race, his life leading up to running, what sparked his decision to lace up, and the myriad of changes that this has had on his life.Enjoy!Episode LinksScotty Stevenson on InstagramScotty Stevenson on TwitterDirt Church Radio on InstagramDirt Church Radio on TwitterDirt Church Radio on FacebookDirt Church Radio on PatreonCieleFurther Faster New ZealandUltraspire NZSpring Energy NZSCOTT Running
