Ashley Anderson is a ministry leader and wise voice who lives in New York and has become a dear, dear friend of mine. She was our April guest on the Single Purpose League podcast last month, and we had a conversation around having a theology of singleness—What does that mean? Why does it matter? What does Scripture say about being single? It felt so important to all of us so, today, we're sharing that conversation with all of you. We're doing that this week because Single Purpose League registration is open! We only open it up certain times a year, so we're able to have intentional time going a little bit deeper with our members, so SPL registration is open RIGHT NOW but it closes on Thursday—THIS Thursday May 15th—at 11:59pm CST. If you have a friend who could benefit from a community of women figuring out our single purpose and our purpose while single, will you text them this episode and let them know about Single Purpose League? Every month we're tackling topics that help us thrive as single people. We have an exclusive podcast, monthly livestream where we do Q&A (they're a blast) and opportunities throughout the year to meet up in person and connect. We also just announced our summer book club, so now's a GREAT time to jump in. You can learn more and sign up at singlepurposeleague.com, but remember registration closes on Thursday night and won't open again until the fall. ALSO - Katy and I are doing a live Zoom call tonight (May 13th) called Why Am I Single? And we would love for any of you to join that at 7pm Central. HERE's the Link! . . . . . This week we learned about the distinctive of The Redemptive Edge and the discipline of blessing beyond barriers. In His final few moments with His disciples in Matthew 25, Jesus prepared them for His death, resurrection, ascension, and future return. He spoke explicitly on the coming day of the Lord, where He will return in the fullness of His glory with all the angels, and the nations will be gathered before Him as He judges them according to their treatment of the poor and oppressed. Pastor Ashley called us to reevaluate our posture towards the poor against the heart Jesus clearly holds for the marginalized and oppressed.

Ashley is a Sports Pharmacist with the International Sports Pharmacists Network, a career that she told us more about in her previous episode. This Sunday, Pastor Ashley continued our Rediscovering Church series with a teaching on Christian persecution and the appropriate response of the Western Church. While it may appear that persecution is a burden of the past that only the early Church faced, the reality is that one in seven Christians today are facing persecution because of their faith. In light of this realtiy, perhaps the most significant thing we can do with our lives is to live beautiful and compelling lives of faith that echo back to those suffering for their faith that Jesus is indeed worthy.
This is a fun conversation to share, not only because it involves chatting with three very smart grad students from my alma mater, Auburn University, but also because the topic tackles an issue that is outside of what we might consider the "mainstream" of Applied Behavior Analysis. A few months ago, Ashley Anderson, Daniel Sheridan, and Anna Kate Edgemon reached out to me, and informed me of the great work they're doing supporting justice-involved youth in a juvenile detention setting. As I learned, there is some history of behavior analysts practicing in this area, and these grad students, led by Dr. John Rapp and colleagues, have been developing effective interventions in these settings. And when I say effective, I'm talking about incredibly low recidivism rates... But I'm getting ahead of myself. If this is unfamiliar territory for you, don't worry. We go over enough introductory terms and definitions to get you up to speed straight away. Also, there are some great meta-lessons embedded in this conversation about rapport building, staff training, cultural competence, teaching real-life skills, and more. So even if this specific topic is not your thing, there are parts of this interview that I think will apply to your practice. I left this conversation really inspired by the somewhat untapped potential for our field, and I hope the intervention strategies these guests and their colleagues are publishing become adopted at a much wider scale!
