Keep Up the Good Work. Innervisions member Marcus Worgull has been distorting time and space with his productions and performances over the last two decades. Seemingly effortlessly, he manages to express his musical vision, encapsulating entire moods and feelings in a single frame of expression. Further expanding this framework, the Cologne-based musician recently ventured into green pastures with the launch of his freshly-minted record label, Chorus. We caught up with Marcus to hear the latest as he talks studio productivity, life in lockdown, hanging with Barnt, and Chorus. Furthermore, he contributed a soothing listening trip, weaving jazz, folk and spherical moodsetters to lose yourself in, for good measures! #196 of our podcast series by @avidusavidus! ➪ https://www.facebook.com/AvidusEmpore ➪ https://www.residentadvisor.net/dj/avidus A key aspect of electronic music is timelessness. Timelessness when it comes to productions from the past decades, that still work perfectly to put floors around the world into ecstasy. Furthermore electronic music doesn’t have an expiration date. It doesn’t matter if you’re Giorgio Moroder, performing as a DJ for the first time with an age of 70+ or if you’re the next big wunderkind from nowhere entering the music scene with a hit EP - everything is possible. That’s why it’s also possible to bring people together regardless to their age or generations. And that’s been the same for Fritz Wagner and Marc Wolf - together Avidus. Fritz startet producing in the late 90s with his first computer and a producer-keyboard. It didn’t took long for him to find out, that the harmony in his productions drew most of his attention. Starting of as an autodidact with Hip Hop Beats he then went on producing more pop oriented music and finally found his way to house music. Influences like Booka Shade, Tiga or Gui Boratto were his heroes at that time when he was around 20 years old. Over a decade Fritz was gaining his own experience aside from trends or inside knowledge of the electronic music scene and he shared his productions in very personal and small circles. Marc on the other hand started to work and play with different bands from the rock and hardcore scene very early. He made studio recordings and was working on his mixing skills by the age of only 16. He made the first contact with electronic music by producing synthesizer backing tracks for hardcore bands. With almost 17 years he then moved to Kiel and found himself in the situation, that there are no band members around. That put him in the situation to produce and to perform on his own. He started to DJ. At first on illegal outdoor raves until he had enough money to buy some equipment. He was making waves as the youngest Newcomer of the city, which led to his first residency at Kiel’s Luna Club by the age of 18. During his first residency “ENDVR“ he welcomed guests like Âme, Roman Flügel, Barnt or Marcus Worgull. After hearing one of Fritz’s tracks on a local sampler, Marc found and contacted Fritz. After a few hours in the studio it seemed clear, that aside of their shared love for house music, they also had a common affinity towards classical and harmonic elements which should play a huge role in their productions. If one wanted to describe the sound of Avidus, words like “epic“, “trancy“ and “gritty“ were often used. But when you ask them, they don’t want to classify their music into genres. That’s because their productions are so diverse. One track can be very melancholic, the next one sounds euphoric. Some even sound funky sometimes while others could be the soundtrack of a very gritty epochal blockbuster, taking the listener to medieval seats of war. What combines their productions is the aspiration to trigger certain emotions through classic musical compositions. With Marc’s experience as the longstanding DJ of the duo, music collector and follower of the scene, combined with the virtuos qualities from Fritz, wo loves to be in front of the booth while dancing when it comes to DJ-Sets, is the key to their sound and to their friendship. With their own label Empore Music and releases on Hommage, they managed to draw the attention of some big names to their trademark sound. Keep an eye on them, they’re going places.

Being a long time resident DJ somewhere teaches you the sort of skills that stand you out from the pack. Cologne’s Lena Willikens is one such special selector who has very much made Salon Des Amateurs in Dusseldorf her own. As well as serving up singular sets there, she is also a key part of the Comeme Records crew with the likes of Barnt. For them she hosts a regular radio show, and for them she has released her brooding, industrially bleak techno sounds. Lena’s influences come from well outside the normal cannon - proto techno, industrial boogie, synthesised disco, outlier house and robot jack all characterise her work, and the set she has served up here. It is one hour of unusual grooves, unsettling atmospheres and metallic textures that are abstract and dehumanised and take you to a raw and visceral place that is hugely intoxicating. Easily one of the best mixes this year so far in our humble opinion!
#colorize :: my 2016 winter mix series progressive tunes; 18 tracks, progressive melodic techno & deep melancholic house. German Daniel Ansorge, aka Barnt, is a DJ and producer who, in his own way, sticks to the Bauhaus principle: he makes music that has nothing in it that isn’t totally necessary or functional. With this rough blueprint, he has conjured up some unsettling techno on his own Magazine label as well as Matias Aguayo’s Cómeme. Mule and Hinge Finger have also come calling for his works, and despite their minimalist approach, they are textured and hypnotic, strange and subversive. Last year he toured the US for the first time, and he's already a very welcome guest at Europe's forward thinking clubs. So after years of quiet toil, he is now getting the recognition he deserves around the world. The fascinating mix he serves up is suitably spooky and chilling to start, with ambient drones, soft drums and haunting pads all operating on a bleak horizontal plane. Later on some sleek metal grooves and post apocalyptic techno gets you on your toes before everything decays back to a dystopian nothingness. It makes for quite the trip and offers a snapshot of the sort of thing you can expect from the man when working in either the DJ booth or home studio.
Ran Salman steps up to the plate and brings you Steyoyoke's July radio show. Lacing the airwaves with a combination of smooth grooves, assertive bass lines and inspiring melodies, Ran pieces together a well rounded set, which reflects all of his most admirable qualities. Artist names that appear in the track listing include Khen, Nick Devon, Soul Button, Barnt, Perdo Aguiar and even Ran Salman's recent remix for Andrea Bertolini gets a test drive. With seamless transitions and an effortless flow, this radio show is rich with an abundance of musical beauty. http://www.steyoyoke.com/
Armed with unwavering persistence, the idiosyncratic and self-critical Alex Niggemann has had a remarkable career so far, with the future still as bright as ever. Not many artists can attest to suddenly finding themselves sitting on Resident Advisor's 'Top 20 Charted Artists' after a friend submitted some of their work to labels without their approval. But this is exactly what happened to Alex, leading him to release on various labels from Audiofly’s Supernature imprint to Nick Curly‘s 8bit Records, and even establishing his own label, Soulfooled (followed by his second label, AEON, in 2013). Alex's heavy-duty Materium EP, released on Steve Bug's prolific Poker Flat, dominated the charts last year and sat in RA's Top 50 for weeks after it's initial release. Other notable releases of late include the excellent Earth Symphony EP on Sasha's Last Night on Earth, and also the hypnotic single 'Sorrow' on Watergate Recordings. For Alex's Balance Selections podcast you can look forward to some beautiful tracks from labels like Kompakt, Objektivity and Alex's own Soulfooled label en route to more darker cuts from acts like Rødhad and Barnt. It is very clear that what has been a sprawling journey for Alex to date is far from coming to an end.
