Pixelated Audio is back from another VGMCon in Minnesota, this time about space! Joining Gene once again from last year are Pernell from Rhythm and Pixels and Carlos from Heroes Three! We did a similar panel last year; we take a broad theme and make it educational, and then use it as an excuse to cram in all sorts of VGM examples. We had some tech issues and lost some of the recording but we were able to rescue it with a more laid back "part 2" we recorded in the hotel room as a way to fill in gaps and riff for a while. Prepare for launch on this massive double episode clocking in at almost 2 hours! We discuss space, its influence on games and computing, and a wide range of games that have a direct or sometimes tenuous link to space. We've got a ton of music this episode so we hope you enjoy it. Pardon the noise in the background, it was the best we could do with a portable recorder. If you'd like to follow along with our slides that we used during the talk, feel free to click through.

Have you ever thought to yourself, "how scary could this pixel art horror game be? It's just pixels!". If so, you and I are the same. And granted, Decarnation (Atelier QDB, 2023) isn't an in-your-face type of horror. It's more of a psychological, empathetic horror and dread for what your character is going through. And it's very, very effective! This is a really unique horror game with fantastic pixel art, sound design and music- highly recommended! As a fan of Silent Hill 2 (episode 10 of Tales from the Backlog, by the way), I figured at some point I would need to go back and play the original. Silent Hill (Team Silent, Konami, 1999) was really interesting to go back and play, for a couple of reasons, most notably that I thought I knew what the game and town's whole deal was, but that was apparently not the case in the first game. The other surprise was that I found this pretty breezy from a mechanical perspective, which was welcome after really struggling through Resident Evil 1. It was an interesting trip back through history, and led to a great conversation! Produced using a nearly equal mix of Audacity and Ardour in Linux (either Fedora Linux (Gnome), Nobara (Gnome), SteamOS 3 (KDE), Manjaro (MATE), Ubuntu DDE, Ultramarine (Pantheon), Ubuntu Unity, Sparky Linux (NsCDE), or on any combination of the Gaming PC "Big Rig", the Steam Deck, Living Room desktop, Mac Mini or one of three Linux laptops – Fedora on Laptop and/or Nobara on Big Rig being the most likely and most common). It's no secret that hosts Ed and Justin each have their own video game music podcasts, so it was inevitable that their interests would intersect eventually! This month, they take a look at how industrial, goth, synthwave etc is used to create mood and atmosphere in video games. From the harsh industrial beats of “Prodeus,” to the electro-rock riffs of “Vampire: The Masquerade,” to a spooky Nick Cave-esque ballad from “Trüberbrook,” there's a fantastic selection of music you may not be aware of! Having a spooky February with this Silent Hill 2 episode. We had to bring in a pinch hitter for this one so my immediate thought went to Silent Hill 2, one of my favourite games and favourite soundtracks. Akira Yamaoka's moody, atmospheric tunes are dripping with menace but are still incredibly listenable and tuneful. 00:00:00 Akira Yamaoka - Promise (Reprise) 00:01:45 Talk 1 00:11:57 Akira Yamaoka - White Noiz 00:13:21 Akira Yamaoka - Forest 00:15:04 Akira Yamaoka - Prisonic Fairytale 00:16:59 Akira Yamaoka - Heaven's Night 00:19:04 Akira Yamaoka - The Day of Night 00:20:41 Talk 2 00:30:03 Akira Yamaoka - Betrayal 00:32:33 Akira Yamaoka - Ashes and Ghost 00:35:41 Akira Yamaoka - The Darkness That Lurks in Our Mind 00:36:57 Akira Yamaoka - Terror in the Depths of the Fog 00:41:29 Talk 3 00:46:36 Akira Yamaoka - Theme of Laura 00:50:01 Akira Yamaoka - Love Psalm 00:54:27 Talk 4 01:03:27 Akira Yamaoka - True 01:06:34 Akira Yamaoka - Null Moon 01:09:24 Akira Yamaoka - Magdalene 01:11:17 Akira Yamaoka - Fermata in Mystic Air 01:13:34 Talk 5 01:23:40 Akira Yamaoka - Overdose Delusion 01:28:12 Akira Yamaoka - Angel's Thanatos 01:31:30 Akira Yamaoka - Promise 01:36:10 Talk 6 01:46:30 Akira Yamaoka - The Reverse Will - Rebirth Ending Podcast Twitter: https://twitter.com/crtpodsystem Reese's Twitter: https://twitter.com/yourverygoodbud Tom's Mastodon: https://jorts.horse/@forpush Podcast Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/crtsoundsystem Email: crtpodsystem [@] gmail CRT Artwork by https://www.instagram.com/juicezombie.art/

“None of us were there when it happened.” With some delay, we bring you our podcast about the Hungarian/Japanese developed shoot 'em up, Sine Mora. Originally a 2012 Xbox Live Arcade title, but since ported to multiple formats, this supergroup developer mashup with an Akira Yamaoka soundtrack is a game that pleased mainstream game reviewers more than it pleased the dedicated shmup community. Leon, Michiel, Tony and community correspondents debate the benefits of bullet time and popcorn. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/podcast/cane_and_rinse_issue_526.mp3 Music featured in this issue:1.
