Mohan Belani, CEO and Cofounder of e27, and Jeremy Au talked about how the Southeast Asia startup scene has transformed over the past decade, including the shift from early-stage exuberance to a more cautious, capital-efficient mindset, and citing specific cases like eFishery and Carousell. They touched on regional challenges, with markets as different as Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia, while urging investors to adopt a more hands-on, private-equity approach. They highlighted the importance of personal growth, and they advocate for curiosity and balance in leadership. 1. Southeast Asia Startup Ecosystem Evolution: The early days (2010–2015) were marked by wild “what if” dreams and a Silicon Valley mindset. By 2014–15, that excitement had given way to healthy skepticism. 2. Investor Caution: Cases like eFishery, which raised over $100M, show that excessive capital without sustainable growth can backfire. 3. Founder Maturity: Founders now, often serial entrepreneurs, are more experienced, with clear goals, as seen in companies like Carousell. 4. Regional Challenges: Scaling is tough when starting in a strong market like Singapore and expanding into countries where purchasing power drops (e.g., to Indonesia where GDP per capita is 10× lower, or Malaysia where GDP per capita is 5× lower). 5. Shift to a PE-Style Model: There's a growing call for VCs to be more hands-on and adopt a private-equity approach to drive liquidity and realistic exit strategies. 6. Exit Realities: While VC valuations can be 10–20× revenue, public listings in Southeast Asia often fetch around 1× revenue, highlighting a significant exit gap. 7. Personal Growth & Leadership: There's a need for curiosity and balance—staying childlike in innovation while being pragmatic—to solve problems and build great companies. A o to víc mě to zajímalo.“ Subkultura reggae a ska tehdy bujela. A kde v sobě rozlítaní muzikanti, z nichž každý už má dávno svoje zájmy a povinnosti, vzali energii a vůli? Všichni to brali totálně vážně,“ popisuje tehdejší přípravy.

Today we're going to talk about a company whose mission is to increase the GDP of – not a country or city – but the internet. Founded in 2010, our guest Stripe is a technology company that prides itself on building the economic infrastructure for the internet. With dual headquarters in San Francisco and Dublin, and offices dotted across major financial hubs such as London, Tokyo and Singapore, the firm assists customers from the world's largest enterprises to budding startups in accepting payments, growing their revenue and tapping new business opportunities. That means its suite of products and services cuts across a number of functions, from pricing, billing, checkouts, payment links, revenue recognition, to invoicing and even marketplace solutions. The firm said over 100 industry leaders process more than US$1 billion on its platform annually, while over US$817 billion in payments were processed by businesses on the platform in 2022. In Singapore specifically, the firm works with some of the fastest growing players including Grab and Carousell. Now, why are we speaking to Stripe you might ask? Well, the internet or the digital economy is an interesting one to look at, with the digital economy in ASEAN alone widely tipped to grow to US$1 trillion by 2030. But where are the opportunities within the broader APAC region? And more importantly, what are the complexities involved in capturing them given how fragmented the payment landscape is here? Not to throw in the cost of compliance as well? Meanwhile, the Stripe is also seeing a number of developments of late. It had in April raised US$694.2 million in a tender offer, giving the fintech player a 30 per cent higher valuation amid the cooler funding climate. The move is said to allow employees to cash out their share compensation without an IPO. But is the firm ready for an IPO anytime soon? Meanwhile, Stripe had also in July this year acquired its competitor Lemon Squeezy. But what was the rationale behind the move? On Under the Radar, The Evening Runway's finance presenter Chua Tian Tian posed these questions to Paul Harapin, Chief Revenue Officer, Asia Pacific & Japan, Stripe.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Raffy Montemayor, Founder & Philippine Business Head of Salmon, and Jeremy Au discussed three main topics: 1. Country General Manager Learnings: Raffy talked about how his unintentional early experience at Nestle turned out to be pivotal in learning about sales, HSBC for marketing and his experience as an INSEAD MBA. He then went on to lead the Philippines market for Agoda (travel aggregator), OLX Group (global classifieds) and Carousell (regional classifieds unicorn). He shared his learnings on how to best operate as a country General Manager: embrace direct involvement in operations due to the absence of established processes, flexible strategy localized to the actual market, and effective stakeholder management by crafting strong business cases. 2. Classifieds Insights: Raffy explained the classifieds business model: building a user-driven content flywheel to generate organic traffic and achieve market leadership. He discussed the strategic choice and trade-offs between a profitable, smaller-scale operation focused on B2C segments like used car dealerships and real estate companies vs. a broader C2C focus which requires significant marketing investments without immediate revenue generation. He also discussed why and how Facebook is such a strong competitor and substitute. 3. Fintech Founder for the Philippines: Raffy expressed his deep connection to the Philippines, not just emotionally but also in terms of the business opportunities shaped by demographics, income levels, and digital trends. He shares his excitement for the Philippines' underbanked market and why he co-founded Salmon to build financial inclusion, craft a customer-centric experience and utilize technology to build a profitable consumer lending engine. They also talked about professional burnout, becoming a father and experiencing the twists-and-turns of a professional tech career. This is a five part series on how to raise capital for your business. We started off this series simply on the notion that you can raise your capital without having to take loans. We began part number one with how much you need to raise capital for your business. Then we moved on to part number two which is changing your lifestyle so that you can set aside that amount of money into your capital bank. In today's episode, part number three of the five part series on how to raise capital for your business we will be focusing on how to live for less so that when you are living for less that savings that you have gained will be able to be set aside in your capital bank. Living for less is one of the best ways for you to raise capital for your business simply because I've tried this. I've done this a lot of times in my businesses and I've seen that this is one of the best ways for me to raise capital no matter how small the amount is. Tune in because this is a really important episode for you. There are a lot of things in our house that we can live without. It is time to bring out your inner Marie Kondo, clearing out the things that don't spark joy can become handy and useful for you, especially when you are trying to raise capital for your business. There may be some clothes that you always keep thinking, "Hmm, perhaps I'll wear that one day." But that day doesn't seem to come. Or we have some devices that we no longer use. I've been guilty of that. I know for sure that you definitely do not need the latest mobile phone for you to look trendy because you're already trendy enough. The first thing that can help you with living for less is to go down to your own personal habits. Live for less. Search for things of value around your house. When I was raising capital for my handmade stationery business, I started off by looking at the devices I already own. I had two mobile phones but was only using one. As much as I wanted a standby device in case my current phone screws up I knew that I could earn more money from the unused phone. I sold that off, that's $200 right there, and set the money aside into my capital pool. I also had a musical keyboard which I didn't play on anymore. I decided to let that go and earn an easy $300 dollars because of its value. That's $500 right there already from valuable things you already own. I repeated the same exercise as I was raising capital for Blissful & Co by downgrading my mobile phone from an iPhone to a Huawei, sold my used iPhone for $600, bought a Huawei for $200. Totally worth it. Next step, you will need to let go of the things that you don't need or can survive without. Have 16 blouses? You could get rid of 11 of them and keep the best 5 instead. Look at your bookshelf. Any books that are worth to be sold off? Perhaps they are in very good condition that will be worthy to pass on to new owners. Sell them off so that you can earn something. College textbooks — I know we have lots of them. Sell them off at 20% less than you purchased them. Letting go of things you don't need could help you raise between $200 to $500 depending on the quantity and quality of items you already own. In Singapore, I use Carousell app to let go of the things I don't need. There are lots of bargain hunters here so the products stand to move faster on this app. You might find some similar apps in your region and in your country. Take advantage and find out how you can sell off all these used items and gain a profit from it. Now it is your turn. Look around the things in your house that has some value to it. If the item is available enough and you see that there is a market for it consider selling it off at a lower price than what you have purchased it but keep the money strong and set aside that money into your capital bank.
