An insightful sitdown with Dean Chew, co-founder of Singapore-based label Darker Than Wax and the newly opened listening bar Offtrack,..........With a djing journey that has spanned more than 15 years, Dean Chew (aka Funk Bast*rd) has earned praises from a worldwide range of selectors that include the likes of Gilles Peterson, Lefto, Bradley Zero, Alex Kassian, Kamma and Maslao, San Soda, Hugo LX, Dam-Funk, Dreamcastmoe and more. Being the co-founder of Singapore-based label Darker Than Wax and the newly opened listening bar Offtrack, Dean has been tirelessly pushing and promoting an alternative expression of lefteld music through his widely eclectic and genre-bending sets. As the main A+R and creative mind behind DTW, the label has flourished tremendously over the past 5 years, cementing its place as one of the go-to labels out of South East Asia. His musical selections, which traverses across an extensive spectrum from deep jazz to the freshest cuts have left many indelible marks on the dancefloors. A highly respected digger who is also known by many in the circuit for his extensive musical knowledge, technically astute skills, and blends, it's no surprise that he has warmed up or shared the stage with Bradley Zero, Lefto, Alex Kassian, HAAI, Pablo Valentino, Marcellus Pittman, Pearson Sound, the late Mike Huckaby and many more. There's always an element of surprise in his sets - just open them ears.
In 2020, Mell G dropped out of law studies to pursue music full-time and hasn't looked back since. For good reason too—she's far too busy for any potential regret. Over the past three years, the Hamburg-based artist launched JUICY GANG RECORDS, switched up her DJing style from ghettotech to electro, began touring and started producing. Her year-and-a-half old label is now a go-to source for brazen, bouncy club bangers and her refocused, electro-heavy sound has led to bookings alongside DJ Stingray, Pearson Sound and other heavy-hitters. The rising star is certainly having a moment, yet it hasn't been all smooth sailing. These sudden career ascents can be tricky to navigate emotionally and her upcoming debut album ISSUES expresses some of the mental health struggles she's faced along the way. Her RA Podcast is similarly personal. Moving from retro synthwave to acid-laced techno to UK bass before ending on funky electro, it embodies the core sounds that are near and dear to her. Loaded with lots of gritty low-end frequencies, it's a thrilling ride across contemporary club music that cements her status as an in-demand DJ. @djmellg Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/889
LA-based Canadian artist Jessy Lanza has brought dance and pop music together and elevated both art forms in the process. At the heart of her work are her own sensual vocals. They bring human warmth and emotion to vibrant and uptempo grooves and result in music that is both energetic and accessible yet personal and honest. Next to critically acclaimed studio albums for Hyperdub, she has made a fine entry into the DJ-kicks mix series and toured solo from Asia to Australia. Europe to North America. Her latest album is her broadcast and boldest yet - Love Hallucination features work from producers such as Pearson Sound, Jacques Greene, Tensnake, Paul White, and Jeremy Greenspan and conforms Lanza to be out in a class of her own. Lanza brings her feel-good vibes to the podcast series this week, not least with a couple of her own exclusive new cuts as well as one mysterious known gem early on. They add up to a perfect representation of her sound - the first half is a feel-good mix of retro-future boogie, glossy 80s r&b, party-starting funk bombs and many more irresistible moments of pure heat from Brenda and The Big Dudes, Debbe and The Code and Gino Soccio. Things then turn more towards the dance floor with deep house from Frankie Knuckles, bass-heavy rhythms from Addison Groove and a piano banger from Mall Grab. It's just the sort of happy, sunny mix you will be coming back to all summer long.

Hello and welcome back to the Ninja Tune podcast with your host Azariah Mai. On this episode Azariah will be sitting down with Edinburgh born, London Based producer Barry Can't Swim to chat about his upcoming EP 'More Content' dropping this June 24th. He'll give us a run down of his musical journey so far, we'll hear about some of the artists that inspire him at the moment and also some of the music he listened to growing up.
Composer, DJ and sound artist @yu_su is Vancouver-based but China-born and she makes music that travels just as far. It is rooted on the dance floor but with influences that span a wide array of emotions, styles and scenes. From jazz to ambient to organic synthesis, wistful texture to her own multi-instrumental skills, she brings a new style of composition to her work. That was best exemplified on her adventurous and accomplished 2021 album Yellow River Blue which picked up plenty of critical acclaim. Her mix for us this week brings Su's signature blend of dub, downtempo, house and trippy leftfield electronics. She says, "Once again, the story has a start and an end, but you could be anywhere you want inside the journey." She's not wrong - it is a living and breathing selection packed with cultural references, interesting rhythms and carnival atmospheres that is perfect for out door dancing under the sun with music from Pearson Sound, Jimmy Edgar, Midland, Carl Craig and many more.

By the Internet, in the form of zeros and ones, we've received a mix from Atawizm, a young musician from the wonderful city of Kaliningrad (we are a little bit nostalgic about drinking alcoholic beverages with a view of old German mansions), who recently moved to also wonderful St. Petersburg (we continue to feel nostalgic, but for all of those alcoholic beverages that we could drink there now, but for some reason we are still sitting in Moscow). Important disclaimer: the mix from Atawizm won't make your life easier during these mercilessly hot July days - with all these techno, breakbeat, and electro tracks from the guys like TV.OUT, Pearson Sound and Asquith, it accelerates to 155 BPM and even the toughest of us feel how their pulse accelerates because of it. Please, take care of yourself: listen carefully to the mix, drink more water and hang out in the shade more often.

Russian DJ and producer Nina Kraviz talks about heading up a very special remix project. St Vincent approached Nina to make one remix of a track from her album ‘Masseduction', and Nina suggested curating a series of remixes of the whole album. This became a record called 'Masseduction Rewired', Nina called in some of the most innovative electronic artists in the world, including Jlin, Laurel Halo, Steffi, Midland, Mala, Pearson Sound. We asked her to talk us through the journey, from meeting with St Vincent aka Annie Clark in New York to rewiring the sonic structures of the record.

Spinning records since the age of 15, New Delhi-based DJ Nash JR is adept at weaving together seamless sets traversing through a variety of genres. He utilises the expertise efficiently in his latest mix for Wild City, which sees the bass-head branch out from his trademark sound. After kicking things off with the contemporary sounds of Waffles and Tom Misch, Nash introduces world fusion elements with Fun Da’ Mental’s ‘Back To Basix’ before localising things with the Bollywood samples of ‘Party’ by J Rocc. The set features a notable spontaneity in its mixing as Nash jumps from the techno rhythms of Pearson Sound’s ‘XLB’ to the breakbeats of Pangaea’s ‘Bone Sucka’ – connecting the multitude of styles with a rhythmic narrative. The merit of the mix lies in the fact that the constant switch between genres never jumps out, unless you are deliberately trying to split the selections into categories.
