Paris welcomes back the Olympic Games with a "Seine-sational" opening ceremony, making itself a truly "moveable feast." As the city renews its commitment to unity, diversity, and athletic excellence, the timeless spirit envisioned by Baron Pierre de Coubertin some 120 years ago resonates louder than ever. What does Paris have to offer for this spectacular event? What enduring legacy has the Olympic Games brought to humanity? How can the Olympic spirit continue to spread in favor of global unity?
Coubertin'i bu toplantı yıldırmadı. Fransa ve diğer ülkelerin spor teşkilatlarına sürekli mektuplar gönderdi; hedefi uğrunda mücadele etti ve beklenen gün geldi. 16 Haziran 1894 tarihinde 37 spor kuruluşunu temsilen 78 kişi ve 9 ülkeden 20 delege, Coubertin'in organize ettiği Uluslararası Atletizm Kongresi'nde buluştular.

Olympic insider and author George Hirthler talks with Big Blend Radio about his new historical novel, “THE IDEALIST: The story of Baron Pierre de Coubertin”, that dramatizes the extraordinary life and times of Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the French genius of sport who reached into the vaults of antiquity and resurrected the Olympic Games. www.CoubertinTheIdealist.com
George Hirthler's new historical novel, “The Idealist,” is the inspiring and tragic story of Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the French visionary who founded the modern Olympic Games. When the novel opens in early 1937, Coubertin is 74, he's broke, his health is failing, and although he has created one of the most influential international movements of the 20th century, he is completely unknown outside a small circle of admirers, whose financial help he has repeatedly declined. His wife can hardly withhold her bitter animosity, his son is an insensate abyss of sadness, his daughter in and out of touch with reality, and his great creation is about to fall into the hands of a Nazi madman leading the world to war. But hope begins to rise again when a new ally appears.
One of the leading creative talents at work in the Olympic Movement today, Hirthler is a seasoned campaign director who has served as lead writer or chief communications strategist for ten international winning bid campaigns, including the winning campaigns of Atlanta 1996 (his start), Beijing 2008 and Vancouver 2010. THE IDEALIST is an intricate and compelling story of Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the visionary who saw the possibilities of uniting the world in friendship and peace through sport—and became the first international entrepreneur of athletic competition. In 1996, the Republic of France awarded Hirthler the title of Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters for his work promoting the Olympic Ideal and the legacy of Baron Pierre de Coubertin. In 2004, Sports Business Journal named Hirthler one of the 20 Most influential People in the Olympic Movement for his work on bids. A graduate of Temple University's School of Theatre and Communications, Hirthler lives in Atlanta with his wife, Carole.
“The important thing in life is not to win but to take part, the essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well”. So said the founder of the modern Olympic movement, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, at the end of the 19th Century. How does his noble ideal fit with the modern phenomena of professionalism, doping, individual financial gain, nationalistic pride, huge corporate sponsorship? Is the Olympic ideal still alive? In this week’s edition of the programme, as the Rio Games approach, join Owen Bennett Jones and his guests as they discuss the present and future of the Olympics. REFLECTION QUOTES “A ‘no' uttered from the deepest conviction is better and greater than a ‘yes' merely uttered to please, or what is worse, to avoid trouble.” ~Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948), Indian Political and Spiritual Leader “…So when at times the mob is swayed To carry praise or blame too far, We may choose something like a star To stay our minds on and be staid.” ~Robert Frost (1874-1963), American poet “We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of….In almost every act of our daily lives, whether in the sphere of politics or business, in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons…who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wires which control the public mind.” ~Edward L. If you can get their emotions going, make them forget their logic, you've got ‘em…At MTV, we don't shoot for the 14-year olds, we own them.” ~Bob Pittman, American businessman and founder of MTV, as quoted in the Philadelphia Inquirer, November 3, 1982 “The essential thing in life is not so much conquering as fighting well.” ~Baron Pierre de Coubertin (1863-1937), French educator and historian, founder of the International Olympic Committee SERMON PASSAGE Romans 11:33-12:2 (ESV) 33 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! 34 “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?” 35 “Or who has given a gift to himthat he might be repaid?” 36 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. Chapter 12 1I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. 1 John 3:1-13 (NASB) 1 See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. 2 Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. 3 And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.
