Come and join the conversation with the gorgeous Akua Opong! After originally meeting in 2022 as winners at the WeAreTheCity Rising Star Awards, Akua and I have been supporting each other ever since, it was high time we got together for a proper catch up! Currently a Senior EUC Engineer at the London Stock Exchange Group, STEM Ambassador & Sports Volunteer Akua wears an incredible amount of "hats" too! A massive advocate for women in a number of different capacities such as Women In Tech, Black Women in Tech, charity ambassadorships, initiative leaderships, she is just so passionate about helping people in any way she can. We chat about her childhood aspirations, early influences and the seeds of creativity and empathy that were sparked within her from an early age. The conversation covers The Simpsons, Hello Kitty, clocks and the practical qualities that she began to show, citing her grandparents as one of her biggest inspirations. In her teens, Akua felt pulled to become a pediatrician (with light up roller skates and a cape no less!) in pursuit of her passion to help others. Akua talks me through a potential Army career (with a warning about telephone numbers!) and the story behind her journey into the male dominated world of tech. Fighting her way up the ladder as a woman, we chat about the difficult journey she experienced to get to where she needed to be. Genuine determination and bucket loads of research Akua tells me is the key to being intentional when it comes to landing your dream role. We talk through how she started as an advocate for DEI, specifically in LSEG and the shock of being the only woman on her team, a fact that took some time to wrap her head around. She tells me of all the amazing women that have helped her along the way, such as Ella Morgan, Sarah Hepworth, her Mentor at LSEG Jennifer Burns, we chat about her massive CV of projects to date including a UNICEF water walk, activities linked to social purpose, community projects, joining the Woman's Inspired Network, LSEG Foundation and Co-Lead London Chapter of Accessibility Network, UK Charity Committee, LITERALLY this lady is on FIRE! Akua is undoubtedly a woman of action, she's a doer, she's proactive in making changes in any way that she can to help others. She is also a massive champion for Neurodivergent employees, having received her own diagnosis only a few years back. Determined to spotlight the incredible neurodivergent women she had read about and encountered along her journey, Akua jumped onboard an initiative to help show employers what women could bring to workplaces! I cannot express quite what a force of nature and inspiration she is, selflessly giving up the majority of her free time to help others, she is jam packed full of empathy and compassion for others, Akua is a very special woman. I truly believe that she is going to leave a legacy behind, she is the epitome of an action taker, and a thoroughly amazing human being. Please do go and support her and follow her incredible journey: https://www.linkedin.com/in/akua-opong/ An inspirational chat with an inspirational lady! YES SHE CAN!

Gender and Voting Behaviour in the Lead Up to the UK General Election 2024

Traditionally, in the UK, women have been more likely than men to vote Conservative, whilst men have been more likely than women to vote Labour. Yet in recent general elections, this gender gap in voting behaviour has reversed, with women now leaning to the left of men in their vote choice. As the gender gap has shifted, parties have increasingly recognised the importance of women voters and have competed for their votes. The lead up to the 2024 General Election is no exception and has seen women voters at the fore of the election campaign, with the ‘Stevenage Woman' – a fictional key voter – at the centre of Labour Party strategy. In this presentation, Anna Sanders explores the key issues in the run-up to the 2024 UK General Election, and their implications for gender differences in voting behaviour. About the Speaker: Anna Sanders is an Assistant Professor in British Politics at the University of York. Her research brings together the areas of gender, policies and voting behaviour, with a core interest in how policy offers shape gender gaps in vote choice. She has published on these themes in the Journal of European Public Policy, the Journal of Elections, Public Opinion and Parties, and the British Journal of Politics and International Relations. She is currently working on a monograph, ‘Winning Women's Votes: Gendered Policies and Campaigns in Britain'.

Here's the thing: we're supposed to expect better of "the side of the law," and having cops with long-range rifles on their shoulders walking up to bounce-houses to point those rifles in and wave people out at an otherwise peaceful music festival at a public park is a bade look. That said, burning privately-owned construction equipment, throwing Molotov cocktails and fireworks at anxious and jittery cops is, too. Can't run, won't run? Listen to this episode before you write yourself off! It's September and with the whole post-holiday vibe it's often a good time be thinking about a new fitness regime. With that in mind, I've decided to kick off Season 4 with an episode on running. If it's not something you've tried before or thought you'd never do in a million years (that was me until Hello Lockdown!) this is the podcast for you, because I'm speaking to a specialist women's running coach who knows exactly how to help us get started and how to do it in a way that suits our midlife body. I'm delighted to welcome Sam Palmer to the podcast to share her expertise. This is a woman with a lot of get up and go, who's reinvented herself multiple times and used the knowledge from each incarnation to help her develop the next one. She started out as a nurse in neonatal intensive care; retrained as a teacher after becoming a mother; set up her own first aid training business and then retrained again as a running coach, specialising in supporting women in their first steps at becoming a runner. All of this expertise combined when she launched her Midlife Makeover coaching programmes to support women with simple lifestyle changes to improve their health and wellbeing. We discuss all aspects of running – how to get started if you're a newbie and how to pick up again if you've taken a break. We look at the tangible health benefits and the surprising fringe benefits you can experience. Sam advises on the practical aspects of kitting yourself out and is full of good advice on how to look after yourself and reduce the risk of injury. Sam is so positive and encouraging. I think the big takeaway from this episode is not to rule yourself out of anything. And never say neverIf you enjoy the podcast, please give it a 5 star rating and a review on Apple podcasts, or whichever platform you listen on, And please do tell your friends and family about it. I'd be so grateful because it really does make a difference to the visibility of the podcast, so that more women can find the show. After all, every woman deserves to have a happy menopause.  Season 4 of The Happy Menopause  is supported by  innovative natural health company Better You. Tune in to the podcast for details of a 20% discount on their range of oral  vitamin and mineral sprays and transdermal magnesium.

It was a result that no-one saw coming, despite all the pre-election commentary that predicted women would decide the outcome, and it seems we've chosen a swathe of professional women to replace conservative male MPs in even the safest of seats. So what pushed us to create one of the biggest political overhauls we may ever see in Parliament in our lifetime? It is just because we desperately want action on climate change and trust the 'Teal Independents' to finally get us there, or is there more to this story? The Quicky speaks to an expert in women and Australian politics to find out how we came together to disrupt the status quo, and whether we might have finally have overthrown the political patriarchy for good. Episode 23 – Let's look at leadership multidimensionally. For the month of May 2020, Challenge Yo Self is excited to tackle Women in Leadership with a series entitled “Winning Women: Living Life on Purpose”. Ashley and Joy begin the series discussing the significance of the month of May from Mental Health Awareness Month to National Military Appreciation Month and beyond… and they make the decision to add women in leadership to spearhead the discussion of the month. They shift the discussion from the portrayal of the elite few in leadership to the idea that every woman is a leader. As they introduce the series, Ashley and Joy discuss their perceptions of leadership, the goal to interview women around the globe and provide leadership perspectives from various fields. It's time to shift the mindset of what it means to be a leader by sharing stories, shifting expectations, and discussing what it means to win, past and present. From internships to the once-coveted corner office, Ashley and Joy discuss the changing landscape of leadership and what that means for women. I run a podcast that is meant to help business owners have a successful exit that keeps their needs, post-exit, in mind. When I met Lisa Schiffman, I was amazed by the type of work she and her business partners are focused on doing for women in business — particularly because this is a male-dominated industry and the stats these ladies are putting out regarding the improvements they're making across the board are impressive. Lisa and others at Ernst and Young are running a program called “Winning Women” which offers financial support and backing for female entrepreneurs who wish to grow both financially and professionally with their business, whether that means market research, product innovation or another aspect of the business that they wish to grow. They did a study on the program for their 10-year anniversary because they wanted to celebrate the successes they've had and spread the word about the wonderful work Winning Women is doing in the business world. The Ripple Effect We all know the saying about fishing, which is roughly this: gives someone a fish and they eat for one day; teach someone to fish, and they'll eat for a lifetime. Well, this organization is teaching female entrepreneurs how to fish — and these ladies are reeling in the big fish! Winning Women recently had a study done of the impact of their business for their 10th anniversary. The results of that study showed that 83% of Winning Women say they benefited from the advice and mentorship of their peers available to them in this program. A common issue in the business world for female entrepreneurs is finding an appropriate role model or mentor; Winning Women has 430 entrepreneurs in 50 countries around the world available to be a mentor. This is a huge well of ability and knowledge that is unmatched anywhere else in the industry. On top of that, almost every woman in the program (96% of them!) has said that she feels a unique responsibility to support other women. They do this by hiring or advancing women within their business (90%), being a role model (94%), mentoring women outside of the organization (90%) or even opening a new business with other Winning Women in the program (21%). That is remarkable networking and the best pay-it-forward model I have seen in a mentorship program. Are There Real (Financial) Results? If the mentorship aspect isn't compelling enough, stats relating directly to the health and success of the businesses themselves were positively impacted as well. For example, Winning Women increased their headcounts by 166% in the last 10 years and also grew their return on average compound annual growth rate (CCAGR) by 35%. Transactions done by these women have improved, as well. Looking into this year alone, 53% say they are planning to undertake a strategic transaction (43% of them for the first time!) through alliance (47%), merger (18%), acquisition (16%) or an IPO (5%). For those seeking external financing for these transactions (53%) in the next twelve months, 51% are still thinking about doing traditional bank loans while 16% say angel investors, 11% say venture capitalists and 2% say private equity. Winning Women looks to improve industry knowledge in this financing area for these women so that they can be more competitive in the market and garner greater success. Direct from their website, here are some other fun stats to know: Individual participants average 20% revenue growth annually; in the second year of participation, however, their companies have been known to grow up to 50%. Winners also report increases in entrepreneurial confidence, growth goals, networks and media visibility, to name a few. How Can I Become a Winning Woman? You need to be a female-founded company with 51% own
