The man credited with reviving the Olympics in the late 1800's was a French aristocrat named Baron Pierre De Coubertin. In his memoir he claimed that idea to revive the Olympic games had been his and his alone. However, historians have pointed out that the "Olympic Idea" had been floating around Europe for many decades before De Coubertin started his quest to create an international Olympic games. Modern Olympic precursors existed in Greece and England before the first IOC sanctioned games. Was the "Olympic Idea" stolen by the IOC? Tune-in and find out how goat-legged gods, Mario Kart tracks, and Olympic pigeon racing all play a role in the story.

From Greek revolutionaries to eccentric French barons with epic mustaches, we examine the storied lives that led to the revival of the Olympic Games in 1896 and the birth of the modern Olympic & Paralympic movement. Jonathan and Sarah dive into the story of how the Greek Revolution inspired influential Greeks to revive the Olympic Games, how the Wenlock Olympian Games showed that the Olympics never completely died out, and the fascinating life of Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who is credited as the Father of the Modern Olympic Movement and was an early champion of the power of education and sport combined...even if he was a misogynist.

Everyone likes to quote De Coubertin, the visionary founder of the modern Olympic Games: "The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part." But let's face it, when we compete, we all try to win.The US Cyber Games is no different; it is about competing and winning, but it is also about learning and promoting a different way of educating the future generation of cybersecurity professionals. Everyone who participates in such an innovative event has something to learn, even the coaches themselves: from other teams, each other, and the competitors. The InfoSec complexity requires diversity and a wide variety of skills that no single individual can master on their own. And, just like in any other team sport, each one has a role to play to bring their nation to the highest step on the podium. And if that doesn't happen, yes, the important part rolls back yo taking part and, in this case, helping to fill the infamous workforce gap in cybersecurity. It is a win for society, no doubt about it.Enjoy this podcast.____________________________About the International Cybersecurity ChallengeIn the first International Cybersecurity Challenge, teams from across the globe will compete in a series of challenges such as web application and system exploitation, cryptography, reverse engineering, hardware challenges, forensics and escape rooms.About the US Cyber GamesThe US Cyber Games was founded by Katzcy, in cooperation with the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) program at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

IT’s that’s time again, yep, the Nerds are here with another fantastic episode of random pop culture news. So please ensure your seats are in the upright position and trays are folded away as we are expecting to experience turbulence. This week we are taking a look at Western Australia with Buck. Apparently NASA and the European Space Agency are spending time there in preparation for their upcoming missions to Mars. Apparently it is as close as you can get to Mars conditions without going there. Just with super spikey Spinnefex grass to poke holes in your clothes, body, and anything else you put near it. This stuff is more painful than a cactus. But the main reason why NASA and the ESA have scientist out here isn’t for an all-expenses paid holiday. No, they are here to work. What is that work, well it is the first topic so listen in.Next we hear about a bunch of dead beats who didn’t pay a kid for his hard work making an awesome game. That’s right, a gaming studio has actually shown themselves to be a bigger bunch of scumbags then a politician on the campaign trail. Apparently they only have a small number of employees though, so it was all just some misunderstanding. Wait a minute, hold on, Buck hit’s a sore point here and makes sense in regards to what the dirtbags are up to. Of course this is utterly outrageous, particularly if he is right; my goodness, if he is we’ll never hear the end of it. But if he is, oh the humanity, oh no, this is devastating. But if you want to know more of what I am rambling on about then you know what to do, that’s right, listen in.At the sound of Tinker Bell waving her magic wand please turn the page… ohh, um, wait a second, are you still here? Dang nabbit! Well in that case We have the DJ for you with a story about a new spin-off for the terminator. James Cameron has announced his plans to reboot the series and is planning to do so after he finishes the Avatar series. So it is a race to see what comes out first, the new reboot of Terminator or Star Con, um, Star Citizen… Well I think we will all be old, even the Rolling Stones won’t be touring anymore by then. Perhaps One Direction will be back together for a reunion tour…oh the humanity, the torture, please stop. On a better note check out our friends at “Off With The Fairies” another outstanding TNC podcast. After this we have the usual shout outs, remembrances, birthdays and special events. While many other authors had published works of fantasy before Tolkien, the great success of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings led directly to a popular resurgence of the genre. This has caused Tolkien to be popularly identified as the "father" of modern fantasy literature—or, more precisely, of high fantasy. In 2008, The Times ranked him sixth on a list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945". Forbes ranked him the fifth top-earning "dead celebrity" in 2009. He is known as the father of the modern Olympic Games. The Pierre de Coubertin medal (also known as the Coubertin medal or the True Spirit of Sportsmanship medal) is an award given by the International Olympic Committee to athletes who demonstrate the spirit of sportsmanship in the Olympic Games. He also proved the existence of isotopes of certain radioactive elements. His work and essays popularising the new understanding of radioactivity was the main inspiration for H. G. Wells'sThe World Set Free, which features atomic bombs dropped from biplanes in a war set many years in the future. Wells's novel is also known as The Last War and imagines a peaceful world emerging from the chaos. In Wealth, Virtual Wealth and Debt Soddy praises Wells’s The World Set Free. He also says that radioactive processes probably power the stars. He was born in Eastbourne,Sussex - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_Soddy2 Sept 1936 - Andrew Grove, Hungarian-born American businessman, engineer, author and a pioneer in the semiconductor industry. He escaped from Communist-controlled Hungary at the age of 20 and moved to the United States where he finished his education. He was one of the founders and the CEO of Intel, helping transform the company into the world's largest manufacturer of semiconductors. As a result of his work at Intel, along with his books and professional articles, Grove had a considerable influence on electronics manufacturing industries worldwide. It was a bright, cold day in June, and the clocks were striking thirty past nine in the morning. On this last day on the Olympia show floor in London, after a few unsuccessful attempts, Sean and I were finally able to say hi, sit down, and have a good ole chat with Troy Hunt while we sipped on a cup of hot coffee. Yes, a podcast with Mr. Troy Hunt! Australian, security researcher, software developer, founder of Have I Been Pwned, blogger, public speaker, keynote and overall 'very busy guy.' Especially this week in London, where the opportunities to talk CyberSecurity are plenty: Infosecurity Europe, Bsides London, and the many satellite events taking place around the main event such as cybersecurity Rants, company events, and even some industry awards. We actually met Troy on the first day of our adventures at one of those extracurricular industry events where he won a top bloggers award (and we did not). It indeed was one of those De Coubertin situations where the most important thing for us was not to win but to take part; it sure was great to be nominated and be there with everyone to celebrate our global community. But let's get back to the podcast. As an Australian that travels the world speaking at all sorts of conferences and winning European awards for his contributions to the InfoSec community, the first part of the conversation was naturally dedicated to discussing and appreciating the concept of cybersecurity as a global phenomenon which allows for dialogue to happen between and within InfoSec communities without any geographic boundaries. Clearly, the exchange of information is a strong driving force for the future of this industry and society. On this topic, being in Europe, Sean and I took the opportunity to carry on our mission to explore the different ways that cybersecurity is perceived, promoted, and practiced in different parts of the world. We invited Troy to share his point of view on the subject, and we found ourselves talking about the perception of privacy and its consequent regulations and application in Europe vs. the USA. Troy rightfully suggest that one of the key differences is the attribution of ownership of private data and retention. By the way, do companies really need data from 19 years ago - especially sensitive data? Do they just see those — any data actually — as an asset that increases the value of their users' "experience" and never consider the fact that they could quickly become a liability? Have I Been Pwned? Have you? I am sure you have asked yourself this question, utilized this service, or at least heard about it. How could we have a conversation with Troy and not ask him about his creation and how he sees society leveraging such a unique and valuable service? Interestingly enough, it was built as an experiment that has become exceptionally popular, truly appreciated, and used in the most diverse of individual, commercial, and even public sector case studies all over the world. ___________________ We'd like to thank our conference coverage sponsors for their support.
