Where in the world am I? In San Diego, talking about Athens, Greece, Part 2 of 2 This is the Dr. Mary Travelbest Guide podcast. The FAQ is: I'm currently taking 2 "high-risk" medications and will be traveling to Germany, Austria, and Czechia from the US in the fall (will be in each country less than 5 days). I know I'll need a doctor's note, keep everything in the original packaging, and declare them. What has your experience been traveling with prescription medication? Have you ever been pulled for extra questioning, had medication confiscated, or forgotten/skipped declaring, etc.? Answer: No, I've never been stopped for medication, nor has anyone I know. But you should always have a doctor's prescription, and it should be in the original packaging. You should have the supply amounts for the trip you are taking. So be mindful of any country laws and regulations. Always check first. Please note that I am not a medical doctor, but a business and marketing DBA. 60-second confidence challenge Your challenge today, Confidence Challenge in travel, is to get tickets to an event in a different country. If you're trying to see a big event like the World Cup, you may need to check the current conditions, pricing, and immigration rules. I attended the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, and I hope to go to the next games in 2028, but it's not a sure thing to get a ticket. You can sign up now if you want. See the show notes. https://la28.org/en/newsroom/la28-launches-global-olympic-ticket-sales.html If you like today's Confidence Challenge, my book series delves deeper into specific events for travel, like Olympic Games, while moving through the 5 steps to solo travel, from easy to more challenging, with foreign language communication tips. See Book A for addressing this concern. Find it on the website at https://www.5stepstosolotravel.com/ or on Amazon. It's a several-part series, and part C is almost ready for pre-sales. Today's destination is Athens, Greece, Part 2 of 2 Remember, it's a Step 5 destination. Here's some guidance for you on the places to see in Athens. Acropolis Visit I entered the Acropolis at 7:10 PM, so I only had 50 minutes, but that was enough. Visiting at night was better since it wasn't too crowded. But you get kicked out at 8 pm, so I had another couple of hours to explore the areas around the buildings, and they were still visible from the nearby hillside. It did get cooler after 8 p.m., too. I think that there is so much more than just the main attractions. Spend more time here in the evening, when it's still light outdoors. Saturday: M2 to Elliniko I took the metro to the Acropolis station, but it was under construction, so I had to change my plans. No problem Last Day in Athens I went swimming in the bay near Edem, a public beach accessible by tram. There, I met Don and Joan from the USA, who are now locals thanks to the Golden Visa program, having obtained resident status here for $250,000. They're living the good life now! They showed me the ropes at the beach and provided great insight into life and culture here. They are a sweet couple, probably in their 55s or 60s. In the '80s, Don lived in San Diego with his former wife, raised kids there, and worked for General Dynamics. Afterward, I visited Poseidon Taverna, a restaurant near the tram station, and later hiked up Proponisia Mountain, or Hill. I enjoyed a beautiful sunset on the roof of my hostel while talking to Damien from Holland and my roommate, Danny from Takoma. I also had breakfast with another hostel roommate, Amanda, a tech expert traveling solo. Additionally, I spoke again with Ryan from Melbourne, Australia. He missed his flight and expressed his desire to run with the bulls in Spain soon. I gave him some of my leftover books and food for his future trip. Food: Gyros with pork Recommended Activities: Hop-on, hop-off bus, Architecture Museum, and a city tour. I did a lot of walking this week, averaging 10-17 kilometers every day. A side note: I just hit the 5,000-mile mark on my walking badge app, some of it in Greece. My missteps: I got scammed online I was scammed on Amazon for a product I did not order. A random vendor mailed me some jewelry. I did not order it. Then I saw a bill for $400. It was impossible to get a refund, because the seller was no longer on the website. After several months, I did receive a refund, but it was a challenge to get it. Don't let that happen to you. AI was used to select some of the suggestions for this episode. Welcome to the Dr. Mary Travelbest Guide podcast for 5 Steps to Solo Travel. The FAQ is: What is going on with the number of cars on the road these days? Is traffic increasing, and why? Answer: Americans are sitting in traffic longer than ever. Last year, commuters lost an average of 63 hours, or almost 8 workdays, stuck in traffic, according to a Texas A&M study reported by Kiplinger. It is a 16% increase in national congestion costs from 2099 to 2024. Truck congestion rose 19%. A shift in traffic patterns has contributed to overall increased traffic times. Delays are no longer just during weekday rush hours. Traffic congestion is spreading to midday, midweek, and even weekends, due in part to hybrid work schedules. 60-second confidence challenge Your challenge today, Confidence Challenge, is to find your way through traffic congestion. If you like today's Confidence Challenge, my book series delves into alternatives to traffic congestion and how to pick places to visit off-season or in shoulder season, while moving through the 5 steps to solo travel, from easy to more challenging, with foreign language communication tips. You can find the series at the link in the description. See Book A for addressing this concern about traffic and congestion while traveling. Find it on the website at https://www.5stepstosolotravel.com/ or on Amazon—it's a several-part series. Today's destination is Athens, Greece. Part 1 of 2 My missteps: Getting lost in Athens The hostel manager pointed outside. "Don't go that way when you leave," and I did not ask. I did get lost a few times, though, finding my way back. I may have walked that way by accident. I found the metro station, which served the modern, faster blue line. I changed lines at Monastiraki and arrived at Omonia Square, but I got a bit lost. The neighborhood was quite confusing and not very safe, with only small markets around. I felt scared at times. It was 9:15 PM and dark when I finally reached the hostel, but no one was at the reception. I bought some yogurt and a banana for my trip. Ever since I've come to believe that God is the Father, and that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that the spirit is the Spirit of God, people have said – actually Christian people have said - that I'm part of a cult. They mean it, of course, in a derogatory, pejorative sense. If the belief in the Trinity, three divine persons in one essence, and the belief in a fully-god-fully-man-Christ, a Christ who is a divine person with two natures – if these beliefs are developments made after the New Testament was written, made in places like Alexandria Egypt, Athens Greece, Constantinople and Cappadocia Turkey, and Rome Italy -- then these beliefs are aberrations, “cultish” if you will, not the real God nor the real Christ of the Bible. In 2008 during the Greek Austerity riots, a strange phenomena was born. Stray dogs began joining in the protests in Athens Greece against the IMF and their austerity measures directed toward every day citizens. These good boys and girls would voluntarily join protests and actively try to protect protesters against the police and their violence, siding always with the demonstrators. Photographers and videographers were the first to notice that the same dogs were turning up day after day, barking at the police, grabbing and running away with tear gas cannisters and otherwise trying to help their human comrades. They became known as the Riot Dogs.... And again in Chile during the 2011-2013 student protests, arguably of the most famous of the riot dogs, The Black Matapacos, joined the protests to protect his human comrades in the fight against oppressive neoliberal policies. Today's guest has done so many things that I would like to do. And he tells us all about it. Welcome bassist and founding member of A Monkey Shine, George Tolias. George joins us from Athens…Greece, not Georgia. He got a late start in music. He didn't start playing until his wife bought him a bass about 20 years ago! But he's a quick study. Once he got comfortable, he started playing in a cover band. But they had an unusual set list. George describes what it's like to play non-Greek rock music in Athens and how he wound up in New Orleans. After staying quite a bit longer than expected, he moved to France…to become a chef. But no matter where he goes, he's joining bands. After moving back to Greece, George decided to get serious about his own band, A Monkey Shine. But then COVID hit so it essentially started as a solo project. But it has grown by leaps and bounds. George also gives up the origin of the band's name, the difficulties of finding a singer who could sing well in English, and the secret origin of his bass. He also talks about the most special song on the album that he wrote for his mom, which also features Duke Garwood. A Monkey Shine's debut is out and there's a vinyl version, too! Check it out on Bandcamp. He's also working on some tour dates in the near future. So follow him @amonkeyshine_official on Instagram or look for them on Facebook. Born in the ancient Roman town of Esslingen, Germany, given the Byzantine name of Stylianos belonging to his late grandfather, the family moved to the USA in the latter months of 1969, settling in the Philadelphia area, where his mother's family settled years before, and had established themselves in the Greek community of Upper Darby, a suburb of the city. As was the norm in the Greek community of the early 70's, the families steadfastly clung to traditions and the language, where Steve grew up speaking Greek as his first language, while enjoying the rich cultural background of his family and ancestors. Greek was the only language he spoke until entering grade school where the challenge of learning English in school turned into both a daunting and exciting task for a young child whose parents depended on his language skills at later stages of life. Steve spent most of his life living in the Philadelphia area then a career opportunity took him to Miami, where he spent 12 years in the tropical sun, enjoying the gentrification of the region in the mid-90s. Realizing his heart was always in Europe after numerous visits, he ventured into the process of successfully obtaining ancestral citizenship in Greece to initiate the dream of living in his continent of birth, yet the dream took many years to come to fruition. At the peak of the pandemic, and the realization that life is much too short, the dream to live and work in Europe became reality with the move to Greece in early January 2021. Steve spends much of his time enjoying the richness of his ancestral land, traveling for business and pleasure to places he learned of in his youth, and making wonderful friends along the way while enjoying the remarkable adventure that is his life in Greece. On Friday, April 26, the Olympic flame for the 2024 Paris games was officially handed over to a delegation from the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee during a ceremony in Athens Greece. The ceremony took place at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens where the modern Olympics were first opened in 1896. At that time, the Olympic flame was passed to the delegation representing the country that will next host the games. And that is, of course, France. But to reach France from Greece, the torch will cross the Mediterranean on board the Belem, the majestic 3-masted ship owned by the Belem Foundation. It will cross the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans as part of the Oceans Relay to reach six French overseas territories: Guadeloupe, Guyana, Martinique, French Polynesia, New Caledonia, and Reunion Island. Once in France, the flame will travel to the Lascaux caves, the Alésia archaeological site, the medieval city of Carcassonne, the Palace of Versailles, and many other sites. It will light up many of France's architectural masterpieces, beginning with the world-renowned site of Mont Saint-Michel. It will also visit places of remembrance, such as the Verdun Memorial and the D-Day Landing Beaches. 40 years ago in 1984, the Olympic torch crossed America to reach the West Coast, Los Angeles, for the official games. One of its first stops was Washington, DC where it stopped at the White House. In this podcast, we'll listen to the President's wonderful remarks delivered on the South Lawn.

Today is a special episode - notes from Athens as well as LEED v5 preview. I talk about the amazing conference I recently attended in late April in Athens, Greece. The great folks that run GBCI Europe, Kay and Nicole Killmann and their entire team do such a great job promoting green buildings, especially programs like LEED, all through Europe. And every Spring, they host a LEED community reunion. About 400 attendees that really practice green buildings and especially LEED get together in one amazing city in Europe each Spring. This year was Athens, Greece. I had never been to Athens. It was an amazing trip! Last year was Barcelona, Spain. Two years ago I was in Munich, Germany. I want to tell you a little bit about what I saw, what I heard coming out of this amazing conference. And then one of the big topics of course, was LEED v5. We wanted to do this special episode and put some links to the latest information on LEED v5 for all of you to make sure you're reading up on it right now. There was an additional focus on healthy buildings and healthy communities and then really technical sessions on LEED v5. We were fortunate to hear from both Peter Templeton and Melissa Baker that came over from the U.S. Green Building Council to give us the latest information. It was great to see so many friends that practice LEED throughout Europe all in one place. ______________________________________________________ GBCI Europe Circle event is an annual community reunion which combines the best qualities of a retreat and a conference. Andrew Lewin discusses the highlights and concerning moments of the ninth Our Oceans Conference held in Athens, Greece. With 469 new commitments made to protect the ocean, totaling $11.3 billion raised, the conference showcased both progress and challenges. Despite the high number of commitments, the amount raised was lower compared to previous years. Join Andrew as he delves into the outcomes of the conference and explores how individuals can support ocean conservation efforts. The conference witnessed the announcement of 469 new commitments aimed at protecting the ocean, demonstrating a strong global dedication to marine conservation. These commitments encompass a wide array of initiatives, including the establishment of marine protected areas, sustainable fisheries management, and addressing the impacts of climate change on the ocean. A key highlight of the conference was the substantial funding raised for ocean protection. A total of $11.3 billion was pledged towards various ocean conservation projects, indicating a significant financial investment in safeguarding marine ecosystems. This funding will play a crucial role in supporting the implementation of the commitments made at the conference, ensuring tangible actions are taken to protect the ocean. The commitments made at the Our Oceans Conference reflect a growing acknowledgment of the urgent need to address the threats facing the ocean. From banning harmful fishing practices like bottom trawling to supporting research on ocean and climate interactions, the commitments cover a wide range of issues crucial to ocean health. The conference also emphasized the importance of international collaboration in achieving meaningful progress in ocean conservation. Moving forward, it is essential to ensure that the commitments made at the conference are effectively implemented and monitored. The positive success rate of previous commitments reaching their goals, as mentioned in the episode, provides optimism for the future of these initiatives. By building on the momentum generated at the conference and fostering strong partnerships between governments, organizations, and stakeholders, we can work towards a more sustainable and resilient ocean ecosystem. Overall, the Our Oceans Conference in Athens, Greece, served as a platform for global leaders to unite and showcase their commitment to protecting the ocean. With 469 new commitments and $11.3 billion raised for ocean protection, the conference laid a strong foundation for advancing marine conservation efforts and ensuring a healthier future for our oceans. One of the key takeaways from the podcast episode is the significant progress made at the Our Oceans Conference in terms of commitments and funding to protect the ocean. However, despite these advancements, there is still a long way to go to achieve the goal of protecting 30% of land and water by 2030. Currently, only 7.9% of the global ocean is protected, with only 4.2% being fully or highly protected, meaning no extractive activities are allowed within Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). The episode highlights the slow pace of progress in reaching the 30% protection target. The host country of the conference, Greece, still offers leases to oil and gas companies, indicating conflicting interests and challenges in transitioning away from harmful practices. Additionally, the exploration of deep-sea mining by countries like Norway, the Cook Islands, and Japan raises concerns about potential environmental impacts on the ocean ecosystem. The episode emphasizes the need for increased momentum and accelerated efforts to achieve the 30% protection goal by 2030. While commitments and funding are essential, the completion rate of commitments needs to improve beyond the current 72% success rate. The episode underscores the importance of inclusive decision-making, strong policy initiatives, and effective conservation projects to drive progress towards ocean protection. In conclusion, while the Our Oceans Conference showcased positive steps towards ocean conservation, there is a clear recognition that more work needs to be done to meet the ambitious target of protecting 30% of land and water by 2030. The episode's analysis highlights the challenges and complexities involved in achieving this goal and underscores the importance of continued dedication and action to safeguard the ocean for future generations. Concerns in Marine Conservation The episode highlights several concerning issues in marine conservation that were discussed at the Our Oceans Conference. One major concern is the practice of bottom trawling in marine protected areas (MPAs). Bottom trawling is a destructive fishing method that scrapes along the ocean floor, causing habitat destruction and impacting marine biodiversity. Despite efforts to establish MPAs for conservation purposes, the allowance of bottom trawling within these areas undermines their effectiveness in protecting marine ecosystems. Another significant concern raised in the episode is the issue of deep-sea mining. Countries like Norway, the Cook Islands, and Japan are exploring the possibility of deep-sea mining in their national waters. However, the environmental impacts of deep-sea mining remain largely unknown. The deep-sea contains unique and diverse habitats that play crucial roles in the ocean ecosystem. The potential damage from deep-sea mining could have far-reaching consequences on marine biodiversity and ecosystem health. Furthermore, the slow progress in ratifying the High Seas Treaty is a cause for concern. The treaty aims to establish regulations for activities in the high seas, beyond national jurisdiction. While 89 countries have signed the treaty, only four have ratified it so far. The delay in ratification hinders the implementation of crucial measures to protect the high seas and promote sustainable ocean governance. These issues underscore the challenges and complexities in marine conservation efforts. Addressing concerns such as bottom trawling in MPAs, deep-sea mining, and the ratification of international agreements like the High Seas Treaty requires coordinated efforts from governments, organizations, and stakeholders. It is essential to prioritize sustainable practices, protect marine habitats, and enhance international cooperation to safeguard the health and biodiversity of our oceans.
