Send us a textDaenerys learns that the Sons of the Harpy are bold enough to murder her Unsullied and her dragons are wild enough to eat children. It's not a great day. Mackelly and Simon consider the cost of ambition.Chapter Review:Daenerys Targaryen is roused before dawn to see the body of her Unsullied Stalwart Shield's body. He's been murdered by the Sons of the Harpy, a group fighting a resistance war against her rule of Meereen. She orders that he be granted honorable funeral rites and that a hefty bounty is offered for information on the Sons of the Harpy. She spends the day hearing petitioners. Nobles want recompense for the losses that her rules has brought them, small folk have their own grievances. The fall of Meereen was accompanied by an orgy of lawlessness to which she has no choice but to turn a blind eye - she cannot execute or maim everyone in the city. The last petitioner bears the worst news. The dragons have grown increasingly wild and willful and farmer after farmer comes to demand the cost of their lost sheep. But the last one brings the charred bones of a human child. Dany is horrified. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Daenerys has taken Meereen, but Astapor and Yunkai are backsliding. She forgives Barristan Selmy for his failures to protect her family, but banishes Jorah Mormont from her sight. She'll stay in Meereen and rule. Mackelly and Simon settle in to watch some dragons grow.Chapter Review:Daenerys Targaryen surveys Meereen from the great pyramid. She's bothered by flies who've gathered to feast on the many dead, including the 163 she crucified as payment for what they did to the slave children. She meets an envoy from Astapor. The council she appointed have all lost their heads, literally, and a former (and apparently current) butcher Cleon, has made himself King. He offers his hand in marriage. Dany is distinctly disinterested. The second petitioner is a Qartheen trader. He has goods he wants to trade for slaves. He's surely barking up the wrong tree. Only Daario Naharis confirms that many freed slaves are down at the docks offering to reenter slavery. Dany begrudgingly allows it and imposes a tax on the trade to swell her own coffers.Next she sees Ser Barristan Selmy and Ser Jorah Mormont. The former gives it to her straight. Her father was mad, Viserys had the hallmarks too. Robert Baratheon was a great knight, and could have been a good king. She appreciates the candor and reinstates him to her service. Mormont tries a similar tack. He spied for Varys for a pardon, as recently as Qarth. But this is too much for Dany. She banishes Jorah forever.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Daenerys Targaryen - Last remaining descendent of the royal Targaryen line, Stormborn, Mother of Dragons, claimant to the Iron Throne of Westeros.Ser Jorah Mormont - Exiled former Lord of Bear Island. In the episode, Brienne of Tarth and Podrick Payne attempt to make contact with Sansa Stark. In Meereen, Daenerys Targaryen clashes with the nobles of Meereen following Barristan Selmy's death, but later agrees to marry Hizdahr zo Loraq. In Old Valyria, Tyrion Lannister and Jorah Mormont are attacked by stone men. At the Wall, Stannis Baratheon prepares to leave Castle Black and march on Winterfell, and Jon Snow frees Tormund from captivity so that he can lead Jon to the wildling camp at Hardhome. The name of the episode comes from a piece of advice Maester Aemon gives Jon, to "kill the boy" and "let the man be born".If you haven't already, please to subscribe to the audio version of the podcast on all your favorite podcast platforms...If you want to keep the fun going with us throughout the week, come join our Facebook group.JOIN THE WATCH DEM THRONES FACEBOOK GROUPhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/126567443834910/?ref=share&mibextid=NSMWBTTO WATCH AND SUBSCRIBE:Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/blackwithnochaser/Twitter:https://twitter.com/BeBlackNoChaser?t=pVFV06lBFdZRu72ot4uCjA&s=09Twitter:https://twitter.com/WatchDemThrones?t=q0ngrYPlugf0ttzM2jo39A&s=09Apple Music: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/watch-dem-thrones-by-black-with-no-chaser/id1641754247Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/show/1qI1bJ1vIlobu502w6zrtN?si=mtsa3gZYRZW_3FmlCrv7UgBWNC RADIO: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/bwnc-radio/id6443800363Amazon Musichttps://music.amazon.com/podcasts/45279c3a-c09f-47d1-a3a3-88e6e2507230/watch-dem-thrones-by-black-with-no-chaserIHeartRadiohttps://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-watch-dem-thrones-by-black-101286659/?cmp=android_share&sc=android_social_share&pr=false#gameofthrones #demdragons #blackwithnochaser #houseofthedragonhbo #dragonseeds #theblacks #thegreens #houseofthedragon #youtube #targaryens #podcast #podsincolor #applemusic #spotifymusic #podsincolor #starks #lannisters #Velaryon
The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Daenerys and her host reach the walls of Meereen. She picks a champion to face the city's hero in man-to-man combat. She meets an old foe and is saved by an unlikely defender. Finally, she discovers two huge secrets and reels from the shocking truth. Mackelly and Simon thank the Seven it's not them who deceived her.Chapter Review:Daenerys Targaryen and her host of freed people make camp outside the walls of Meereen. A hero waits for Dany outside the city walls. Dany sends Strong Belwas to face the Meereenese hero. The fight doesn't last long, ending in Belwas decapitating the other man.Later, Dany discusses ways to defeat the city, with her council. Nobody has any useful ideas, so she dismisses them. While ruminating on the task in front of her, she considers Daario Naharis. Dany fancies him and wonders what it'd be like to take him as a lover. She puts the thought aside and goes for a ride, with Missandei and Arstan Whitebeard for company. Dany allows her people to touch her, as she rides by. However, one man pulls her from her saddle. It's Mero, the former commander of the Second Sons. Mero moves to kill her but Arstan instead easily defeats him.Back inside her tent, Dany wants Jorah to knight Arstan for his efforts. Both men balk at that. It's then that Jorah realizes who Arstan really is. He introduces Arstan as Ser Barristan Selmy, a traitor to the Targaryans, for serving under Robert the Usurper. Barristan scoffs at the hypocrisy and tells Dany of Jorah's treason, selling information about her and her brother to Lord Varys, as part of a pardon agreement. Dany is angry and hurt and sends both men away. However, on second thought, she has a great use for the pair of liars!Characters/Places/Names/Events:Daenerys Targaryen - Last remaining descendent of the royal Targaryen line, Stormborn, Mother of Dragons, claimant to the Iron Throne of Westeros.Ser Jorah Mormont - Exiled former Lord of Bear Island. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Daenerys is sailing the Summer Sea watching her dragons grow. She receives ambiguous reports of the kind of men her father and eldest brother were, advice from Ser Jorah as to her next move, and possibly unwanted advances from Mormont. Simon and Mackelly weigh up the suitors and their suits.Chapter Review:Daenerys Targaryen watches her dragons play above the three ships that bear her west towards Pentos, slowly. The dragons are growing, but remain more of a liability than an asset. In her honor, the three ships have been renamed for dragons of Aegon the Conqueror and his sister wives: Balerion, Meraxes, and Vhagar.Arstan Whitebeard provides some dragon-lore from his time in King's Landing where he knew both her father and her brother Rhaegar. He treads carefully, but it's not hard to see his true feelings about King Aerys. And unlike most people, he has a nuanced view of Rhaegar. “Able above all else” is not the most ringing endorsement.Ser Jorah warns her to beware of Arstan - something's not right about him. But Dany has too few friends to doubt those who've saved her life. Ser Jorah proposes a plan to both test Illyrio Mopatis' loyalty to Dany, and to ensure it. They'll redirect for Astapor, sell all Mopatis' goods on the ships, and use that money to buy an army of Unsullied - the finest warriors in Essos - with whom they'll march to Pentos.Dany likes the plan and Ser Jorah celebrates by kissing her unbidden. A tense moment ensues.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Daenerys Targaryen - Last remaining descendent of the royal Targaryen line, Stormborn, Mother of Dragons, claimant to the Iron Throne of Westeros.Viserion, Rhaegal, and Drogon - Daenerys' dragons. The size of small dogs.Ser Jorah Mormont - Exiled former Lord of Bear Island. Daenerys' Lord Commander of her Queensguard and loyal advisor.Illyrio Mopatis - Wealthy merchant of Pentos who cared for the young Daenerys and her brother Viserys.Strong Belwas - Fighter sent by Mopatis to bring Daenerys safely to Pentos.Arstan Whitebeard - Westerosi squire to Strong Belwas. Seems to know a lot about King's Landing and the Targaryens.Pentos - City on the west coast of Essos.Summer Sea - Sea to the south of Essos.Unsullied - Eunuch slave soldiers. On this, our big announcement day, we are also visiting the Winds preview chapters once more. We are sticking in Slaver's Bay for more Battle of Fire talk as Barristan Selmy first prepares for the coming battle, especially in the care of his young trainees and his own tactics, but we finally, finally, get to see the start of the battle. In Barristan II the forces of Meereen roar out of the city gates to face down the Yunkish army, and at their head is a kingsguard atop a silver horse. The action comes left right and centre as Barry fights tooth and nail for everything Daenerys Targaryen brought to this part of the world. He rides for justice, he rides for his men, he rides for fire. In amongst all that we have a bunch of strategy talk, yet more condemnation of the Yunkish command, what Barristan is trying to make up for, the three thousand possible futures to come after the battle, and mostly about how damn cool this guy is and how lucky we are to see the battle through his eyes. It is finally here! Well chums, we did it. Somehow, someway, we have come to the grand finale of this reread project, and what a time it's been! How do we note such an occasion? With a 5 hour podcast last week, and a 4.5 hour one this time. We're going out with a bang!! Before we do the mushy stuff three chapters still remain. In them, Barristan Selmy takes control of a city while planning a war. He says goodbye to the sun's son, begins to make plots of his own, and all round gets the blood moving. In the Dothraki Sea Daenerys Targaryen confronts past decisions, both right and wrong, to choose a new path entirely while on the brink of death. And finally Kevan Lannister hears tales of coming invasions, smugly thinks of his success in Cersei, before death and secrets step out of the shadows with crossbow in hand. Our FINAL chapters are: - Barristan IV/ The Queen's Hand - Daenerys X - Kevan Lannister Hop aboard the Isle for...everything, to be honest. It's four and a half hours long, what don't we talk about? The chins will wag on Barristan's scheming for hostages, the diversity of his knights and council, what the Harpies are up to now, and we take a BIG wade into what the Battle of Fire could look like from all angles. After that is a focus on what Viserys represents to Dany (and what would have happened if he got the eggs), the meaning and imagery of Ghost Grass, and the self-sacrifice that comes with trying to be the good guy and realising you must cause pain in order to do so. Plus, how do you actually learn to dragonride, and just how much does George want us thinking of GoT here at the end? Finally, questions on Loras, Jaime's reactions, Genna coming east, the welcoming party for Dany and what a certain MASSIVE reveal means overall. Plus, you know, lots of saying thank you for the incredible journey. HUZZAH! Check out History of Westeros for the live streams and main analysis: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCiYwENpLDO4gyB4dBrMYrjQ Please do consider giving us a rating or review if you can, and find more of the Isle of Faces and other projects at https://www.patreon.com/IsleOfFaces https://twitter.com/SerBuckley Thanks as always!
FIVE HOURS! Five hours long! It is the biggest episode of the Isle of Faces EVER! BY MILES!! This is what the end of ADWD does to us, for today we have four of the final chapters of the books, three goodbyes to major POVS, and more big moments than you would believe. In fact, we may well have the biggest in all ASOIAF. Tyrion Lannister prepares for battle while also planning on how to turn the war. Barristan Selmy takes control of a city, faces down his oaths, and then breaks a king by busting out his trusty sword. Quentyn Martell dares to dream of blood and fire only to find the terrible reality of dragons. And far away, on the snowy Wall, Jon Snow receives a letter, turns away from the north, and changes his plans. At least, that is the idea. Of course, our chapters today are: - Tyrion XII - Barristan III/ The Kingbreaker - Quentyn IV/ The Dragontamer - Jon XIII So hop aboard the Isle (bring a cushion though) for a discussion on...everything. It's five hours long, what DON'T we talk about? But among those many things are how Tyrion breaks the reality of battle to Penny and the reignition of Jorah, how Barristan's chapter focuses on three of the main aspects of knighthood, how Gerris & Archibald are the best friends in the world, how Quentyn is both right and wrong, and then EVERYTHING you could ever think about Jon and everything going on at Castle Black. From Hardhome to Val to Ghostie to the Pink Letter to the new plan to how much we love Jon to the most famous of endings...EVERYTHING.
This week, a breather. By which I mean we come in at just under three hours! The end of the Dance keeps coming as we hit double Meereen, have double returns, and one hell of a big event in the North. Today we start large as Jon Snow opens the Wall and allows the wildlings to finally enter the Seven Kingdoms, Barristan Selmy watches the political fallout in terms of Meereen vs Yunkai, Quentyn Martell reveals a hell of a plan while ignoring his much smarter friends, and Jon Connington returns to the shores of Westeros in the name of conquest. Today's chapters are: - Jon XII - Barristan II/ The Discarded Knight - Quentyn III/ The Spurned Suitor - Jon Connington II/ The Griffin Reborn Jump ashore on the Isle for an indepth dive on Jon's dream of protecting the Wall, the gloom of a snow sky, and what it means for the people leaving their world behind. Elsewhere we muse on Hizdahr's intentions (again) and lambast Barristan for his poor thinking and underappreciation of both Daenerys and Quentyn. Speaking of, we ignore Quentyn to admire the wisdom of his friends, specifically Gerris Drinkwater and his focus on life over death. Finally, we finally get to talk Stormlands! And castle assaults! As well as Rhaegar, the potential evil of Jon Con, and how all of Westeros will react to this growing invasion. A discussion of political legitimacy in A Song of Ice and Fire and the Game of Thrones tv series. How do different regimes legitimize their rule? Why is it dangerous to share power with a religious establishment? The theories of Max Weber and Mancur Olson are featured.Notes:2:45 - Max Weber is a big name in political science. His Essay, Politics as a Vocation, discusses political legitimacy among other topics. 5:04 - I suppose the Arryns are in the mix there too. They always seem to be overlooked. 6:13 - Varys, Jaime Lannister, and Barristan Selmy all continue in their positions under the new regime. 8:12 - Mancur Olson was also an accomplished economist (that's what his degrees were in). For his views on the origins of government, see Dictatorship, Democracy, and Development. 21:57 - Wakanda forever! 24:54 - No pun intended ("stark difference). 26:16 Side Rant. We're back in Westeros! Delighted to welcome Professor Colm Connaughton from the University of Warwick to discuss a paper he worked on, alongside a team from several universities in the UK & Ireland. The paper "Narrative structure of A Song of Ice and Fire creates a fictional world with realistic measure of social complexity" dives into the ways George R.R. Martin has crafted such an intricate universe that mirrors our own society while remaining accessible to readers. Colm presents many of his findings in a fascinating conversation that touches subjects including Barristan Selmy, House Frey, the Meereenese Knot, & podcast favorite Stannis Baratheon among many others. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Sansa attends King Joffrey's first court session. It's everything she never dreamed of. Janos Slynt gets a meteoric promotion, Ser Barristan Selmy gets similarly precipitous demotion. And Sansa begs for her father's life. Despite a chorus of naysayers, good King Joffrey is moved to mercy. The boys cast a skeptical eye over the whole thing. Chapter Review: Sansa Stark enters the throne room and is treated as a leper by all. Even drunken Ser Dontos Hollard stifles his greeting when reminded of who she is. No matter, she's on a mission. Pycelle reads out a list of people who are expected to come to King's Landing to pledge fealty to the new King. It's pretty much everyone in Westeros. Arya is on the list - which gives Sansa hope that her sister might have escaped. Janos Slynt is given the Lordship of Harrenhal and a seat on the Small Council. Cersei is named regent. Tywin Lannister is named Hand of the King. Barristan Selmy is then unceremoniously fired from his role as Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. He storms out muttering mutinous words about Stannis' claim to the throne. Sansa's moment arrives. She begs forgiveness for her father. She puts his lack of judgement down to the milk of the poppy he was taking for his broken leg. The Small Council advise the King to harden his heart, but King Joffrey claims to be moved by Sansa's sweet words. Provided that Lord Stark retracts his prior accusations and pledge fealty, there will be mercy. Characters/Places/Names/Events: King Joffrey Baratheon - bastard son of Jaime Lannister and his twin sister Queen Cersei Lannister. Currently King Joffrey Baratheon First of His Name. Queen Cersei Lannister - Widow of King Robert Baratheon, twin sister of Ser Jamie Lannister. Mother of King Joffrey Baratheon. Janos Slynt - Commander of the City Watch (AKA Gold Cloaks), the police force of King's Landing. Now elevated to Lord of Harrenhal and given a seat on the Small Council. Ser Barristan Selmy - Ousted Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. Older but still deadly with a sword or a lance. Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish - Master of Coin, member of the Small Council, and childhood friend to Catelyn Tully. Grand Maester Pycelle - Elderly grand maester of the Seven Kingdoms. Fellow member of the king's Small Council. Lord Varys - The Spider. Eunuch and Master of Whispers. Sansa Stark - Eldest daughter of Lord Eddard Stark and Catelyn Tully. Betrothed to Joffrey Baratheon. Eddard "Ned" Stark - Former Hand of the King, Lord of Winterfell, and King Robert's closest friend. Support the podcast. Buy a bit of merch from our store. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
The King is dead. Long live King Joffrey? King Stannis? King Renly? Whoever! Ned and Cersei confront in the throne room. Ned is sure he has the manpower advantage to win the day, but then Petyr Baelish delivers a lasting lesson in the school of "Don't trust anyone." Mackelly and Simon take sides.Chapter Review: Eddard Stark is awoken to a Lannister show of strength outside his window, and the day only goes downhill from there. At breakfast, he allows Arya to have one last "dance lesson" but refuses Sansa a final goodbye with prince Joffrey, before the girls board the ship headed for Winterfell. The news causes an outraged Sansa to storm off.The day's downward spiral continues when Grand Maester Pycelle arrives and announces that King Robert has died. A heavy-hearted Ned convenes the small council (apart from Renly, who having carefully weighed up the situation has scarpered from King's Landing) and has Barristan Selmy break the seal on Robert's will. As we know, Ned is supposed to act as Protector of the Realm until Robert's heir comes of age. Before Ned can obtain oaths of allegiance, the council is summoned to the presence of the new king. Ned's helped to the throne room by Littlefinger who assures him that the gold cloaks are on the payroll. Joffrey demands a rapid coronation. Cersei tears up Robert's will and demands that Ned bend the knee. Instead, he reveals that Cersei's children are not Robert's and that the gold cloaks should escort the royal family to their rooms. The city guard do exactly what they've been paid to do, and kill all of Ned's men. Ned himself is taken into custody by Littlefinger himself. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Eddard "Ned" Stark - Hand of the King, Lord of Winterfell, and king Robert's closest friend. King Robert Baratheon - King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men. Aside from being king, he's also Ned's lifelong best friend. Oh and now he's dead. Renly Baratheon - King Robert's youngest brother. Lord of Storm's End and Master of Laws. Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish - Master of Coin, member of the Small Council, and childhood friend to Catelyn Tully. Lord Varys - The Spider. Eunuch and Master of Whispers. Support the podcast. The monster episodes just keep coming! Would you expect anything less for the ending of a Storm of Swords? Today we only have four chapters, and it's still nearly as long as last week. Today is a day for tough questions on the nature of betrayal, the nature of unintended evil, and how big of a fist a human skull can withstand. We get a chapter full of Littlefinger creepiness (Get used to that), Jon defends the Wall against both wildlings AND bullies, Tyrion finishes one trial and begins another, and we wave goodbye to the wonderful Storm-Daenerys as she takes Meereen. Today's chapters: -Sansa VI -Jon IX -Tyrion X -Daenerys VI We have more Wall Warfare, the return of Lysa Tully, Oberyn's fighting skill in all its glory, dreams of Tyrion down in Dorne, and the judgment of Barristan Selmy and Jorah Mormont. Don't worry, that part is great! A mere month after the Game of Thrones spin-off about The Long Night was announced (and discussed), another one is in the news! It's not official yet, but check out this Watchers on the Wall story about another Thrones series: "Empire of Ash," directed by Max Borenstein about the Doom of Valyria. Andrew and Manu chat about the rumored details behind the prequel and also briefly touch on the update about the Long Night spin-off possibly going into production in October. Then, it's back to "The Pointy End," which came to its own pointy end in a series of scenes: Tyrion & the Hill Tribes meeting Tywin in the Lannister camp, Robb showing his mettle when a scout interrupts his War Council, and King's Landing, where Barristan Selmy is unceremoniously dismissed from the Kingsguard and Sansa begs for her father's life. Tywin & Tyrion's oh-so-complicated relationship is explored, as are the Hill Tribes, Barristan's great respect, the Lannisters quietly orchestrating Sansa's request, and the show's subtleties with wine, furtive glances, camerawork, and more. Away we go! Next up is "Baelor." Get hyped. In advance of Manu's appearance on the "Not a Cast" episode about AGOT Bran IV, our older episode on when Tyrion presents Bran with his saddle design in the show Jorah & Tyrion traveling through Valyria Ozzy Man reads the alluded epic tale of Barristan's escape from King's Landing iTunes link Google Play link
Andrew and Manu reach the end of "You Win or You Die," where Jon & Sam swear their Night's Watch oaths before Ghost gives them a, shall we say, unsettling graduation present. In Vaes Dothrak, Drogo swears to Dany that he will get vengeance Westeros for the attack on her life, and back in King's Landing, Robert's death allows Cersei to put Joffrey on the throne and turn the City Watch against Ned Stark, who is betrayed by Littlefinger. Womp. There's so much to talk about, from the specific words of the vows to the exact moment that you can see Lena Headey as Cersei realize that she has Ned completely trapped. Welcome, friends, to the last moments of Robert of the House Baratheon, the First of His Name, King of the Andals and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, and Protector of the Realm. A dying Robert shares some final words with Ned Stark, who must then dwell on his death briefly with Varys and Barristan Selmy. Immediately after this scene, Dany tries to convince Drogo to sail across the Narrow Sea to take the Iron Throne for his future son, Rhaego. Drogo is unmoved, but a later assassination attempt on Dany by a wine seller at the market might very well change his mind. Jorah decides to ignore the royal pardon he receives from Varys and intervenes, saving Dany. This week's episode of Game of Thrones was season 5's most action-packed installment yet, thanks to the rise of the Faith Militant and the growing threat of the Sons of the Harpy. Joining us in our in-depth discussion of the events that took place is We Got This Covered writer Sam Woolf, who has some of his own interesting theories and reactions to this week's shocking cliffhanger. In case you missed it, “Sons of the Harpy” ramped up the events in King's Landing when Cersei decided to arm the Faith Militant and name the High Sparrow the High Septon of the realm. She taunted Margery by having the Sparrows arrest Loras Tyrell for crimes against the gods and left the newly crowned King Tommen to pick up the pieces. While all hell broke loose in the capital, Jamie and Bronn landed in Dorne and continued their suicide rescue mission for Princess Myrcella. The Dornish storyline also brought us our first look at Oberyn's bastards, known as the Sand Snakes, and we try to decide if they live up to his legend. In northern Westeros, Jon Snow survived Melissandre's first seduction attempt while Stannis finally revealed the softer side of his hardened heart. He continues to be one of the most controversial characters on the show and we weigh in on the merit of his methods, intentions and recently discovered love for his daughter. Finally, we round out this week's exciting discussion by talking about the climactic skirmish between Greyworm, Barristan Selmy and a band of harpies that had us clamoring for more. Will Barristan pull out of the battle in one piece, or have we seen the last of the greatest living night in Westeros? Tune into the latest episode of The Cast Beyond The Wall to find out!
