Today I talked to Ben Baer and Smaran Dayal about About Spider-Mother: The Fiction and Politics of Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain.  Pioneering Indian Muslim feminist Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain wrote speculative fiction, manifestoes, radical reportage, and incisive essays that transformed her experience of enforced segregation into unique interventions against gender oppression everywhere. Her radical imagination links the realities of living in a British colony to the technological and scientific breakthroughs of her time, the effects of hauntingly pervasive systems of sexual domination, and collective dreams of the future, forging a visionary, experimental body of work. Alongside Rokeya's pathbreaking feminist science fiction story “Sultana's Dream,” this volume features fresh and exciting new translations of her key Bengali writings and a superbly informative introduction to her life and work. If her contemporary B. R. Ambedkar urged the “annihilation of caste,” Rokeya demands nothing less than the annihilation of sexism, with education as the primary instrument of this revolution. Her brilliant wit and creativity reflect profoundly on the complexities of undoing deep-seated gender supremacy and summon her readers to imagine hitherto undreamed freedoms. ROKEYA SAKHAWAT HOSSAIN (1880–1932) was born in present-day Bangladesh, then part of colonial India. Despite being deprived of formal education, she became a prominent writer, activist, and educator. The web of her life spanned from the minutiae of running a girls' school in Kolkata to struggles for women's emancipation on the national and world stage. In this episode, Andrew Wiebe, David Gass, Bobby Warshaw and Matt Doyle go in on Major League Soccer’s Week 12. Monday means winners and losers, and there’s no bigger winner than LAFC these days. Bob Bradley, Carlos Vela and the rest of the Black and Gold are on track to obliterate every record in the book. Who would you take in the trophy chase? LAFC? Or the field? Are they actually the Man City of MLS, as Caleb Porter proposed? Other winners: Pity Martinez (finally off the schneid) and Atlanta United, teams that fired their head coaches (no, not the Rapids) and the Houston Dynamo … after a loss. As for Week 12 losers, the LA Galaxy lead the pack after NYCFC handled them easily. Zlatan can’t do it all, but is he also holding the Galaxy back? Andrew is coming around to Team Bobby, and everyone else is rolling their eyes. Minnesota United have a conundrum, too. How do they get the best out of Darwin Quintero AND Angelo Rodriguez? And how can they start picking up wins at home? Sporting KC are also in the wilderness … and their numbers are dwindling by the day. Also in this episode … Ben Baer joins for the mailbag to play “Guess that Designated Player!” and explain what Porter was talking about when he said Expected Goals told the real story of Crew SC’s season. 3:57 – LAFC and Carlos Vela chase history as the results (and goals) pile up 8:35 – Need a win? Just dismiss your head coach! It worked for Cincy and the Revs 13:08 – Pity finally gets his goal! Atlanta get another shutout and climb the table 18:20 – The Dynamo lost … and are still a Week 11 winner? How? 25:12 – LA Galaxy look static (three straight Ls) and so does Zlatan 29:08 – Are NYCFC good? They sure look good, in large part thanks to Heber 37:55 – Can Adrian Heath figure out the Quintero-Rodriguez conundrum? 40:32 – Is the season spiraling away for Sporting Kansas City? 52:40 – MAILBAG: Name that DP! A less than dominant start to the Gold Cup for the US national team leaves a lot of questions about Bruce Arena's decisions and this tournament's roster. Ben Baer and Matt Doyle join David Gass to look at all the good and bad of the US. From Kelyn Rowe's shining performance and Dom Dwyer's goalscoring streak to why Dax McCarty and Kellyn Acosta struggled to control midfield, the guys break it all down. Also, what upgrade is needed defensively and where can they find some attack from the wings? The guys also hit on Canada's big win against French Guyana and why Mexico may not be as exciting as they usually are. In the second segment, the MLS transfer window is open and the rumors are flying. The guys discuss if Seattle targeted their next Designated Player and what it could mean for Jordan Morris. Plus, are big time moves coming in LA or NY? Could there be a big center forward traded inside MLS? All that plus much more.  In the mailbag the guys debate the state of the USMNT. Is this the most talented group ever? And what should expectations be at next year's World Cup? Plus who outside the playoff field is ready for a second half charge.

Is the ETR curse real? You'll get no confirmation from us, but Michael Parkhurst did score an own goal in Atlanta's 3-1 loss on Sunday after appearing on the show, so make of that what you will. If you're looking for a unique perspective on the Battle of the Uniteds, FS1's Katie Withamcalls in to explain what it's like to watch the game from the sideline, how the atmosphere in Atlanta has improved in a matter of weeks and why Ben Olsen can identify with Lucho Acosta.   The guys also put a bow on the weekend, starting with Dax McCarty's return to New York, Seattle's epic comeback from 3-0 down against New England, Jozy Altidore's big game against the Dynamo, Sporting KC's claim to the "Best Team in MLS" title and Orlando's impregnable fortress. Plus, what's the best attacking tandem in MLS? And which under-the-radar signing this offseason gets the guys stamp of approval?   Last, but not least, the Hot-Take Hotline brings the heat. That's a good think since Ben Baer, otherwise known as the King of Takes, joins to make sure listeners aren't coming lukewarm. Stick around for voicemails berating Dave for his Broadway knowledge, missives from the "Garbage Bowl," Rapids Rabbi standing by his boys and more Portland trolling.   Want to be a part of the show? David is out gallivanting around the Hamptons, so Ben Baer joins Andrew and Matt to take a critical look at both conferences as the playoff races distill and the red line becomes the primary focus for all 20 teams in MLS. First up, the West, where Seattle and new Designated Player Nicolas Lodeiro are proving they’ve got plenty left in the tank. Dallas still sit top of the table, but could they benefit from a (late) #fakeMLStrade? Plus, who’s fighting to stay alive and why isn’t Matt high on LA’s current form? Turning to the every-man-for-himself Easter Conference, the race is about as clear as mud. The Red Bulls and Sacha Kljestan are making up ground after that dire start, but New York City FC continues to score (and concede) in droves to somehow sit above the likes of resurgent Toronto FC. Which team is the favorite the rest of the way? Well, it’s … uh … you know, if … right, but … fine, we have no idea. In the mailbag, David takes a break from vacation to explain how the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) experiment went in USL play on Friday. Reviews are positive.
