In this series, Find and Follow, we are learning what it looks like to trust Jesus fully and to be His follower. To follow Jesus means we learn to trust Him with our lives and help others trust Him with theirs, too. Pastor Aaron has been teaching us that being a disciple and helping others in their faith journey is the call of Jesus' last words in the Gospel of Matthew. To follow Jesus means we become His students. We learn from Him and help others learn from Him. The crucial piece to remember is that we are not learning head knowledge; we are learning life with Jesus. We are learning to surrender our lives to Him in love and to participate in a growing and loving relationship with Him. Religion is trying to bring about change from the outside in, but in our relationship with Jesus, He transforms us from the inside out one day at a time so that we become like Him. We live His love into our broken and hurting world. Today, we will learn why studying the Bible is crucial to growing our relationship with Jesus. This week we continue our Faith Conversations for Men Series as we dive into another hard topic, "Faith Through Suffering." Men – you WILL go through suffering in life, it's all about how you deal with it. Knowing Jesus does NOT mean you won't suffer in life. We live in a broken world. What does faith look like through suffering? We tend to think we can't have seasons of suffering and doubt if we are strong enough in our faith. This concept of "having it all together" is one of the most harmful things to Christians and the church. When we put this facade up, and don't open about our suffering it causes more harm. Men are especially subject to this and it ultimately leads to isolation. What does scripture say? There's a long record in scripture of God's people being very vulnerable about the things they are struggling with. Being able to lament, mourn and confess and be real with God and one another. We see it firsthand with Jesus crying out in the garden and lamenting on the cross. We have an invitation from scripture to be real and to lament about our suffering. It will ultimately lead to healing. Three Practical tips for dealing with suffering: Confront the Pain – Be real about your pain and your grief with yourself and with God Read your Bible – Find out what Scripture has to say about suffering Talk to someone – Open up about your pain to your spouse, friend, a counselor, your small group Recommended Resource: Check out this amazing book "Just Be Honest: How to Worship Through Tears" by our good friend Clint Watkins, www.thegoodbook.com/just-be-honest You can now watch the Men of Iron Podcast on YouTube – www.youtube.com/@men_of_iron. Our Verse: Psa 119:11 Thy Word I have hidden in my heart that I don't sin against you. You say, “I want to follow God. I'd like to know about Him and what He expects from me. I get it that the Bible is His Book. So WHICH Bible is right for me?” First, some facts... God wants to communicate with you. Jesus came and explained much about Himself and the Father. Finally, the whole story of God, Jesus and man was recorded in the Bible! Since there are many different kinds of people and languages, He tailored His message to meet the needs of all people, and to different time periods. That's why, today... we have many different versions. Okay okay, Jim...I got it! But what about me? How do I pick? If you are alone and have only one Bible, go ahead...read it. God will lead you. If you can choose a Bible: Find a version you can understand... Hold on Jim! What is a version?! OK a definition- A Bible version is a translation of ancient documents or older bible texts by a group of people or an individual who want to produce a new, more understandable Bible. Bible translators help adapt God's message to their times. Now where were we? Find a VERSION you can understand. Some are written for people with big vocabularies, some for those with smaller ones. Nothing wrong with starting with a more simple version. If you have a friend who follows God, ask about a version that will work for you. He or she may have an extra Bible or know where you can get one. Many churches will give you a free Bible, hopefully in a version you can understand and enjoy. Many Bible versions are available on the Web. Some are free and come in many languages. You can read online or download to your device. I started just like you. It's a great God adventure, so dont wait! Get a Bible and start reading today! Next: Where to Start??
