In this eye-opening episode, Jim Wallis and Robert P. Jones dive deep into the latest poll data revealing President Trump's unprecedented negative approval ratings within his first 100 days back in office. Discover how Trump ranks as the most unpopular president since World War II at this stage, with a majority of Americans-including 55% of independents-viewing him as a dangerous dictator whose power must be limited to protect American democracy. The discussion also highlights the sharp racial and religious divides in Trump's support, with White Evangelical Protestants largely backing him, while Christians of Color and other faith groups overwhelmingly reject his leadership. Jim Wallis speaks with an eyewitness to the desperation, devastation, and imminent death that is resulting from the Trump Administration's vicious assault on people providing life-saving humanitarian aid around the world. Rev. Tim Costello, a global expert on international humanitarian aid, is the former Chief Executive of World Vision Australia (WVA) and the current Executive Director of Micah Australia. He was in Kenya and Uganda when the Trump Administration inaugurated the irresponsible and unconscionable freeze on USAID funds. “Kenyan women, clinicians, doctors [were] in tears saying, ‘the medications, the U-S-A-I-D medications have dried up. Matt Crawford speaks with preacher Jim Wallis about his book, The False White Gospel: Rejecting Christian Nationalism, Reclaiming True Faith, and Reclaiming Democracy. It is time says Jim Wallis, to call out genuine faith―specifically the “Christian” in White Christian Nationalism―inviting all who can be persuaded to reject and help dismantle a false gospel that propagates white supremacy and autocracy. We need–to raise up the faith of all of us, and help those who are oblivious, stuck, and captive to the ideology and idolatry of White Christian Nationalism that is leading us to such great danger. Wallis turns our attention to six iconic texts at the heart of what genuine biblical faith means and what Jesus, in the gospels, has called us to do. It is time to ask anew: do we believe these teachings or not? This book isn't only for Christians but for all faith traditions, and even those with no faith at all. When we see a civic promotion of fear, hate, and violence for the trajectory of our politics, we need a civic faith of love, healing, and hope to defeat it. And that must involve all of us–religious or not. Learning to practice a politics of neighbor love will be central to the future of democracy in America. And more than ever, the words of Jesus ring, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Bill and the Rev. Jim Wallis discuss the aftermath of the 2024 U.S. presidential election and the troubling moral and ethical implications of Donald Trump's victory. Wallis is the inaugural holder of the Chair in Faith and Justice and the founding Director of the Georgetown University Center on Faith and Justice. Wallis expresses deep concern that the election of Trump, someone who openly repudiated basic values of honesty, decency, and respect, reveals a profound crisis of character and values in American culture.Wallis argues that Trump's rise was enabled by grievances, fears, and a sense of abandonment among many Americans, particularly the working class, who felt shut out by the political establishment.Wallis suggests this election has revealed the strength of racism, sexism, and Christian nationalism in American politics, which worked to undermine the candidacy of Kamala Harris.Wallis calls on faith leaders and people of moral conviction to resist the normalization of Trump's authoritarian tendencies through nonviolent actions, civil disobedience, and a renewed commitment to the core values of truth, justice, and compassion.Overall, the conversation emphasizes the deep moral and spiritual reckoning required in the wake of Trump's election, and the need for principled resistance grounded in timeless human values. You can order Jim's latest book, The False White Gospel: Rejecting Christian Nationalism, Reclaiming True Faith, and Refounding Democracy here. Ken welcomes writer, teacher, preacher and justice advocate, Jim Wallis. Rev. Wallis' new book, The False White Gospel: Rejecting Christian Nationalism, Reclaiming True Faith, and Refounding Democracy is getting high marks and a wide reading. It's a timely and prophetic challenge in an era of polarization and worse, the advancement in America of what Jim calls an heretical version of The Gospel. Wallis calls this a “Bonhoeffer moment.” Silence is not an option. Ken and Jim reminisce over their days together at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School where they both earned a Master of Divinity degree. The famed Carl F. H. Henry influenced them both. In 1973, Henry and Wallis framed The Chicago Declaration along with other prominent evangelical signatories, a document that rings true to this very day. Jim has authored more than a dozen books. He is founder and served as chief editor of Sojourner's Magazine. Today, he holds the prestigious Chair in Faith and Justice at Georgetown University in Washington DC named for his friend Bishop Desmund Tutu. In a wide-ranging conversation, they talk about Wallis' journey since those seminary days, putting him in the center of the Civil Rights movement, appearing over the years as a regular on CNN, MSNBC, The Today Show, and many other major outlets as a Social Action alternative to the infamous Religious Right. Ken asks Jim why he still considers himself an “evangelical.” Jim shares inside stories about his many friends - Ron Sider, Ron Dellums, Howard Thurman, John Lewis, Barack Obama, Jamie Raskin and many more. What is Christian nationalism?

Historically, nationalism has often turned out to be a bad idea. The most obvious examples of nationalism leading to atrocities include the Nazi regime in Germany and Benito Mussolini's fascist dictatorship in Italy, but today's geopolitical scene involves a variety of problematic nationalistic movements, including in India, Turkey, Brazil, and Hungary.  Even though nationalism frequently leads to violence or even genocide, people keep trying it. Perhaps the logic is something like “As great as MY nation is, maybe this time it will work!”  Here in the United States, nationalism has usually come with a particularly Christian flavor. Aside from the usual concerns associated with nationalism, this pairing of politics and religion poses unique challenges. Does it even make sense to combine a political ideology like nationalism with a religion like Christianity (especially Catholic Christianity, which is all about universality and solidarity across borders)?  On this episode of Glad You Asked, theologian and activist Jim Wallis discusses the nature of Christian nationalism, whether nationalism can ever be truly Christian, and how people of faith should respond to the resurgence of Christian nationalism in the United States today. Wallis is the founder of Sojourners and the author of 12 books, including America's Original Sin: Racism, White Privilege, and the Bridge to a New America (Brazos). American Christianity appears in a state of disrepair, perhaps even imminent civil war. On the one hand, of course, we have the evangelical right who make up much of Trump's ideological base; on the other hand, there are progressive American theologians like Jim Wallis who argue that this Christian nationalist wing of the Republican party isn't quite kosher. In his new book, The False White Gospel, Wallis argues that it's time to call out genuine faith—specifically the “Christian” in White Christian Nationalism. These people, he says, are not only fake Christians, but their racism and cruelty represents an existential threat to American democracy. In 2024, white Christian nationalism continues to threaten our democracy and our freedoms—including our freedoms to vote, to practice our diverse religions, to live in safety, to protect and care for our families, and to live in a welcoming country.     There is no one more critical for the struggle against white Christian nationalism than Christians committed to democracy, justice, and human dignity—Christians such as Reverend Jim Wallis, founder of Sojourners, founding director of the Georgetown Center for Faith and Justice, and author of a new book: The False White Gospel (St. Martin's).    Join us this week on the Just Politics podcast as Wallis takes us through how white Christian nationalism is entirely un-Christian—and how the notion of neighbor, as Jesus taught in the Parable of the Good Samaritan, is not limited to a certain race, religion, or country of origin (neither white, nor Christian, nor nationalist!) Rather, the question of “Who is my neighbor?”  is best answered by looking at who among us is most marginalized, other-ed, and in need.     Luckily, everyone in this country—not only people of faith—has the power to spark conversations in their communities about our core values and how they can be distorted and weaponized by powerful interests who try (and fail) to use religion to divide us.     Additional Resources    More on Jim Wallis https://sojo.net/biography/jim-wallis     NETWORK's White Supremacy and American Christianity series https://networklobby.org/actions-to-take-to-after-watching-white-supremacy-in-christianity/     Sojourners, A Call to Civic Discipleship https://sojo.net/civicdiscipleship     The False White Gospel https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250291899/thefalsewhitegospel

On this week's episode of 'The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart': Clashes are increasing as more pro-Palestinian protests emerge on college campuses across the country. I'll talk to two lawmakers who have met with students on the front lines of the action at Columbia University. North Carolina Rep. Kathy Manning and New York Rep. Jamaal Bowman join me to discuss what they've heard from students. I'll also examine what Donald Trump is really doing during his hush-money election-interference trial and what to expect during week two of testimony. Adam Klasfeld was there in the room where it happened and will give me the inside story. And with Trump using the Bible as a money-making venture, I'm left to wonder why so many Christian evangelicals support someone awash in moral controversy. Noted theologian Jim Wallis has a new book that might have the answer. All that and more on “The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart.”

"Everyone who claims to be 'Christian' or else claims to be upset by 'Christianity' needs to read this book, especially politicians using people's supposed faith for their own ends." —Margaret E. Atwood "Jim Wallis calls the nation to grow up and he calls us all to fight the love battle to save the soul of America." —From the Foreword by Eddie S. Glaude, Jr. A major new work by the New York Times bestselling author, arguing that the answer to bad religion is true faith that will help refound democracy It is time says Jim Wallis, to call out genuine faith—specifically the “Christian” in White Christian Nationalism—inviting all who can be persuaded to reject and help dismantle a false gospel that propagates white supremacy and autocracy. And more than ever, the words of Jesus ring, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” - from https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250291899/thefalsewhitegospel   To help sustain our work, you can donate here To check out what RLC is up to, please visit us www.redletterchristians.org  Follow us on Twitter: @RedLetterXians Instagram: @RedLetterXians Follow Shane on Instagram: @shane.claiborne Twitter: @ShaneClaiborne Intro song by Common Hymnal: https://commonhymnal.com/
