Welcome back to The Simplicity Sessions, I'm delighted that you've joined us today. My name is Jenn Pike, your host, registered holistic nutritionist, medical exercise specialist, the best-selling author of the Simplicity Project, and the creator of the women's revolutionary health program, The Hormone Project. Today, we have a fantastic show with Dr. Breanne Kallonen, who is a naturopathic and integrative functional medicine doctor. This is a really great conversation today about weight loss and the myths surrounding weight loss, insulin resistance issues with leptin and a really fantastic methodology called the metabolic reset that Breanne shares with us. I think one of the most pivotal parts of our conversation, which is about three quarters in, is driving home this message: weight loss is the first goal for many of the clients that Breanne works with. But the key is actually being able to maintain the weight you use for as long as possible. Now in order to really wrap your head around what I mean by that, you are going to have to listen to the full episode, as we lay the groundwork up to that point in the conversation. Our goal is that this important message resonates with you and you leave us today with a deeper understanding of your own body and how your decisions affect it. They have lots of things going on and it's not always easy to prioritize, getting in crazy amounts of nutrition every single day. The way that I look at weight loss, especially weight loss resistance - how can we help them to make it as easy as possible. “ “Diving into the research and looking at the impacts of insulin and how we can use meal timing for that, and really strategic workouts.” “Maybe being normal doesn't necessarily mean optimal” “Over time as our food quality has gone down, or just the types of foods that we're eating, I saw research studies showing 88% of the US population has insulin resistance. So if you're eating and you're continuing to spike your insulin all the time, insulin is a fat storage hormone, making it really hard to lose weight.” “The reality too is that our human bodies are constantly evolving. And especially like if you're working with women, I mean, there's different times of the month. There's different phases in our life where we're going to need a different amount of each of the macronutrients in order to feel our best and for our body” “When you're running the functional tests, you're running the full blood lab, like thyroid panel, all of that, you're running like, are you doing GI map, test and Dutch testing, those types of things for the gut. It depends on the individual.” “How can scaling back on exercise cause me to lose weight? Well, it's a lot of inflammation and exercise can increase your appetite too. So if you don't have your nutrition and your sleep and your stress dialed in. You're not going to see the results that you want from the exercise, or it could be detrimental.” “Maintenance is the most important part. That's where people really struggle is how do I create a sustainable lifestyle that feels flexible, that I can sustain” “Some individuals are not necessarily hungry. Their satiety cues haven't caught up, but again, the point is not to suffer through hunger. If you're hungry, have something” “If we're struggling with resistant weight loss and the obesity epidemic and diabetes, there is no better time. Just learning how to properly fuel your body to maintain health long term.” Additional Information About Jenn: Jenn studied and graduated with honors in Human Anatomy and Physiology with such a passion that it propelled her to continue her education over many years. This episode started about PCOS, but really turned into something so much more. I love having Dr. Breanne Kallonen on the show because she is so intelligent that she can break down complicated topics and make them digestible and understandable. To begin, we dive into what is PCOS (polycyclic ovarian syndrome), what are the indicators that you might have PCOS and what course of action you can take to alleviate your symptoms. Oftentimes, doctors are only treating symptoms with birth control, but Breanne tells us what we can do with our diet, exercise, supplements and other lifestyle factors. If you know you have PCOS, you know how hard it can be to reach your weight loss goals. If you're not sure, or you have never heard of PCOS, but you have irregular periods, acne, hair loss and insulin resistance, this is something you want to look into. As we dive into insulin resistance, we discuss gut health and how to optimize the gut microbiome. This is what leads us to discuss mindset and stress management and this is what EVERYONE needs to listen to this podcast. Again, you have to look at your PERCEPTION of your environment, your limiting beliefs and what is driving your food cravings. "Your thoughts about your environment impact your gut health, but your gut bacteria also impact your thoughts." So are your thoughts your own, or is your gut making you think this way. Again, it all comes back to mindset, even when it comes to gut health, PCOS and weight loss. Dr. Jordin Wiggins is a Naturopathic Doctor, entrepreneur, and women's sexual health disruptor. She is revolutionizing the way we deliver, educate and talk about sexual health and pleasure. As the author of The Pink Canary, Dr. Wiggins has unlocked the hidden secret to optimal wellness and the real-life ways you can start to welcome pleasure back into your life & relationships. I found Dr. Jordin via my friend Breanne Kallonen who has also been on the show. In this episode we discuss why so many women are experiencing anhedonia, or loss of joy and what we can do to start getting it back. Women today are overwhelmed by life and it's putting a real damper on our pleasure. We're not just talking about sexual pleasure (although we do go there), but the simple pleasures of getting your nails done or getting your hair done. Speaking of pleasure, most women don't know what they want let alone feel that they can ask for it. Again, this isn't just in the bedroom, but in life in general. You will see how this is all connected and it's time for a pleasure revolution. Dr. Jordin is leading the way and I have appointed myself co-captain! The discussion leads us to the bigger point that our current healthcare system fails women. So many women visit their doctors only to be told that their hormone are in the "acceptable" range and they are left feeling tired, run down and can't lose weight. Dr. Jordin reminds us that we deserve (yes you are worthy) to feel optimal, our very best. Please listen and love this episode and join the revolution with us! We've been lied to. Eat less and exercise more is getting us absolutely nowhere. In fact it has a .6% success rate. That's right, LESS THAN ONE PERCENT success rate. In order to lose fat and lose it for good you have to take a look at your life as a whole. Look at your job satisfaction, relationships, connections, perceived stressors and relationship with food and exercise. Breanne Kallonen is back talking with us about what really matters when it comes to fat loss. WE have to look at lifestyle, hormones and nutrient absorption. But before you go and do a bunch of testing, or assume your hormones are a mess, make sure you're eating enough protein, getting enough sleep and eating a balance of macronutrients. Breanne talks to us about her program, Metabolic Reset and why it works to help clients lose fat WITHOUT exercise. Of course exercise is eventually added back in, but first she address the issues mentioned above along with your mindset. We both agree, you have to think long-term, you have to have an exit strategy and you have to be OK with learning as you go. Make sure you check Breanne out at her website https://www.breannekallonen.com and Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/breannekallonen/.
