2024 is here and this is a very special episode #30 of Pierre Pressure Podcast. This is a re-broadcast of an interview Pierre did with Gordon Gano, lead singer and guitarist of the Violent Femmes, along with then-drummer Brian Viglione (drummer of Dresden Dolls, Nine Inch Nails, World Inferno Friendship Society) on East Village Radio, hosted by Michael Messenie, AKA the Coach, on his Two For Tennis Show. This interview took place in September of 2013 in a tiny studio in the East Village in New York City. Pierre was thrilled to be asked to co-interview Gordon and Brian of the Violent Femmes on the occasion of their upcoming show at Summer Stage, re-starting an era of touring and recording for the band. The Violent Femmes were a hugely influential part of 1980's culture, starting with their massive hit “Blister in the Sun” in 1983 and continuing to this day.  Their music was life-changing for Pierre and kicked-started his journey as a guitarist and songwriter.https://vfemmes.com/https://www.brian-viglione.com/biohttps://www.evr2.com/Theme song; Marchandise by Pierre de Gaillande, from the album franglais. (originally Merchandise by Fugazi.) Interview with Victor DeLorenzo Of Violent Femmes & The Night Crickets DeLorenzo was born in 1954, the son of Victor and Charlotte DeLorenzo, grew up in Racine, Wisconsin, and has lived in Milwaukee since. He has been a drummer since the age of 16 while attending St. Catherine's High School (Racine, Wisconsin), and has been an actor since the age of five. While attending the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, he auditioned for and was accepted into Theatre X in 1976, and worked with them in various roles for more than 20 years.[ As a drummer, DeLorenzo paired up with bassist Brian Ritchie in 1980, as a rhythm section they called "Violent Femmes". When singer, guitarist, and songwriter Gordon Gano joined them in 1981, the band kept the name.[2] DeLorenzo's father loaned the band $10,000 to record their eponymous debut album in 1982. However, the band was forced to delay its release until 1983 after they signed to Slash Records. DeLorenzo's signature sound is a result of his minimalist drum kit. He often uses nothing more than a snare drum, a tranceaphone and steel brushes. The tranceaphone consists of a metal bushel basket inverted over a tom. He favors this style of kit because in their early days, the band often played on the streets. DeLorenzo continued to act with Theatre X, and record and tour with the Femmes until 1993, when he left to devote more time to acting and to recording his own music. He toured as part of Moe Tucker's band in that year. In 1996 he opened a recording studio called "Joe's Real Recording" He has released three solo records since 1990. In addition to recording his own music, he has played with several side projects, including Ash Can School. In 2000, he teamed up with Ritchie to put together a Femmes compilation, and subsequently rejoined the band until it disbanded again in 2009.In March 2013, Gano, Ritchie and DeLorenzo reformed Violent Femmes once more and played a homecoming show at the Summerfest music festival in their native Milwaukee. Three months later, in July, the band announced a new line-up with Dresden Dolls member Brian Viglione as the band's drummer. DeLorenzo confirmed in a statement that he had left the Femmes permanently because of a failure of the band members to resolve their long-standing business disputes. DeLorenzo performs percussion in the chamber rock duo Nineteen Thirteen with cellist Janet Schiff. Nineteen Thirteen's recording of "Hurricane Noel" was featured in the 2011 TED Global Conference. Night Crickets, a long-distance groove affair conducted during the drawn-out days of lockdown and beyond. Featuring David J, Victor DeLorenzo, and Darwin Meiners.   Iconic and foundational bands in the history of alternative music certainly include Bauhaus, Love And Rockets, and Violent Femmes. San Francisco born artist Darwin Meiners was a fan of all three. A chance meeting 13 years ago with David J (Bauhaus, Love & Rockets) grew into a friendship, and Darwin not only became a bandmate, but David J's manager. After reaching out to Victor DeLorenzo through e-mail, Darwin met the Violent Femmes drummer after the Femmes' Coachella set in 2013. Soon after the three collaborated on Darwin's 2014 release Souvenir. As the pandemic took hold, Darwin was looking for a new project to occupy the lock-down time and approached Victor, who was keen to proceed and suggested that David join as well. The musical trust established between these three was immediate and Night Crickets were born. Within weeks a global process was initiated between them, the recordings eventually forming the album, A Free Society. To say this is something of a dream come true for music fans would be entirely accurate. (The band's name came from one of many Zoom meetings between the three members. After addressing various pressing musical issues the conversation rambled somewhat and turned to the subject of David Lynch, with David J telling an anecdote which was told to him by Lynch's sound designer, John Neff. Lynch had asked Neff to obtain a field recording of crickets chirping at night for inclusion in Mulholland Drive. When Neff played him the tape, the director immediately recognized the sound that the insects make when it is light which is apparently a little different to their nocturnal chirp. “No! No! No! These are day crickets, John! I want my night crickets!” Victor, Darwin, and David then shared a look of mutual realization and instantly agreed that the project now had a name!) In 2006, Kalen joined Korn on tour, primarily on backing vocals, and can be heard and seen in the MTV Unplugged: Korn release in 2007 where he was featured playing an exotic array of instruments. He remained with Korn – often seen as The White Rabbit – until 2008. While working with Korn, Kalen fronted the band The Changing, where he collaborated again with Jonathan Davis on single Jerry Bruckheimer. His career in metal would continue as the lead vocalist for the band Superfix, before joining forces with Joey Jordison (formerly of Slipknot) as the lead vocalist for Vimic in 2016. Kalen has worked extensively in the studio providing backing vocals for artists including 10 Years, Pop Evil, Dragonforce and singing on the Lego Batman movie soundtrack. Now, Kalen Chase has embarked on a new path, building upon his singer-songwriter roots, hard rock persona, and production experience to create a sound of his own. His contagious energy and stage presence captivates the room. His percussive delivery and sweet but cynical lyrics naturally draw an audience to join in harmony. Kalen recently relocated to Nashville from Los Angeles. In LA, he recorded Good Things, featuring Brian Viglione of The Dresden Dolls on drums at the iconic El Dorado Recording Studios. Welcome to another episode of From the Bottom of the Record Box. This week we have a bookend from Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats, a great cover song and a surprise new music track. If you would like to hear some of your favourite music played on the show then get in touch. Track Listing Intro Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats The Last Pale Light in the West Ben Nichols Teenage Kicks Nouvelle Vague Jack of Hands Amanda Palmer & Edward Ka-Spel One Night Deidre and the Dark S.O.B. Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats … We've all had 'em OK, so we kicked off Episode 1 by bookending Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats. They are a band that Tobin introduced me to a couple of months ago and as a result, I really enjoy the man's work. Soulful rock music not really made for these times. You can listen to the whole album from which Intro is taken here. Released in March of 2018 it is their second studio album. For instance, I personally recommend the title track Tearing at the Seams, it's definitely my favourite from the album. Consequently, I've worn a deep groove in the vinyl at that point! So - what's next? So if you hadn't already fallen for Nathaniel and his heavy soul backers then S.O.B. came back and ripped at your soul with his tortured lyrics and preacher-like delivery. Taken from their self-titled first album released in August 2015 it acted as a springboard for a full global tour. Whilst on tour they also recorded the quite wonderful eight-track EP A Little Something More From. This is a personal favourite of mine and will be featuring in future episodes of From the Bottom of the Record Box. Joeseph Pope, his wonderful mom, Nathaniel Rateliff & Chris Tetzeli made my day swinging by to drop of their GOLD certified eponymous album. CO is proud of you @NRateliff pic.twitter.com/ICzYebzUmv — John Hickenlooper (@hickforco) August 29, 2018 The rest of the show captures the diversity of music from one man and a guitar to the lavish arrangement of the cover by Nouvelle Vague. Ben Nichols is the frontman for the band Lucero, an Americana/Country Rock band hailing from Memphis, Tennessee. Nichols released his seven-track solo effort The Last Pale Light in the West in January 2009. It forms an interesting combination of guitar, piano, accordion & pedal steel. mystically bizarre and ambiguous, and incorporate recurrent themes from his own personal mythos Amanda Palmer is best known for fronting the dark cabaret band Dresden Dolls. She fronted with Brian Viglione. She has since had more success with her solo career. Palmer often collaborates with other artists, including her father! The mechanical, almost clockwork feel to the track only adds to its sinister intonation. It finally reaches into the fears we all had as children of dark entities coming to us in our sleep. Mystical collaborations Palmer collaborates on this track with the authentically strange English musician Edward Ka-Spel (The Legendary Pink Dots). Ka-Spel's lyrics have been described as "mystically bizarre and ambiguous, and incorporate recurrent themes from his own personal mythos". The whole album I Can Spin a Rainbow smacks of Ka-Spel's love of electronica and mysticism. We recommend consuming the whole album in one sitting rather than piecemeal. "So why did you play only one track?" I hear the listeners scream in unison. To whet your appetite for more of course! The Cover Nouvelle Vague is the brainchild of French music producers Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux. The two brought together a mixed bag of Brazilian and French vocalists. The chosen vocalists were unfamiliar with the covers they were going to record. This ensured a real fresh, new and imaginative take on some New Wave (in French Nouvelle Vague) post-punk classics. The covers were mainly arranged in the Bossa Nova style. Besides the wonderful arrangements on every Nouvelle Vague album, the cover artwork on each one is exceptional IMHO...

In business, in music, or in life, there are few people you will meet as unapologetically honest as Amanda Palmer. A lifelong nonconformist, Palmer has evolved from living statue to award-winning musician—as one half of cabaret rock duo Dresden Dolls and soon to hit the stage opening for Morrissey and Blondie—from TED-talker to esteemed author, and now thought leader. Palmer’s Twitter bio colorfully advertises a performer, writer, giver, taker, yeller, listener, love-lover and rule-hater to her one million-plus follower base. And from our own conversation with Palmer, all of these qualities seem fairly apt.  But there’s one thing this self-account fails to capture, and that is how authentic she is. Palmer has built legions of passionate fans—and certainly her share of detractors—by having a unique voice that is louder than her music ever could be. And by simply asking.  And the answer for many is a loud and resounding YES. Ask, Don’t Tell Being a born storyteller has perhaps taken Palmer in directions even she did not foresee. As an arts graduate Palmer began her professional life as the Eight-Foot Bride on the streets of Cambridge, Mass. During this time she honed a deep curiosity for genuine human connection that has been the underlying theme of all her achievements.  It is this story that Palmer shared on the global TED stage in 2013, when she spoke of the profound encounters she experienced with people from all walks, often people who Palmer sensed were very alone. In her recollection, they would momentarily enjoy very intense eye contact and “fall in love a bit.”   In seeking this connection with others, Palmer and her Dresden Dolls bandmate Brian Viglione made a habit of always spending time “signing and hugging” with fans after each concert, and from here, the story takes off. In the past decade, Palmer has couch surfed the globe several times, sourced music, food, instruments and a hundred other forms of support from her loyal fan base, crowdfunded a cool $1.1 million to produce an album, and whipped up a good deal of controversy along the way.   In this interview you will learn:   - How to embrace your audience - How to endure criticism and become a revolutionary in your industry - The importance of asking for help - How to build an extremely strong community - Breaking the rules and why they were created - & So much more
