The Ghost of Tom Hoad 1995).
Alt-rock legends Violent Femmes are touring in 2024 celebrating the 40th anniversary of their sophomore release 'Hallowed Ground.' But in certain cities -- including Nashville on October 9 -- they're playing a wide selection from their discography with the accompaniment of symphony orchestras. Femmes frontman Gordon Gano shared with WNXP about the experience playing with so many instrumentalists, and also the sustained musical chemistry with bandmate Brian Ritchie.

2024 is here and this is a very special episode #30 of Pierre Pressure Podcast. This is a re-broadcast of an interview Pierre did with Gordon Gano, lead singer and guitarist of the Violent Femmes, along with then-drummer Brian Viglione (drummer of Dresden Dolls, Nine Inch Nails, World Inferno Friendship Society) on East Village Radio, hosted by Michael Messenie, AKA the Coach, on his Two For Tennis Show. This interview took place in September of 2013 in a tiny studio in the East Village in New York City. Pierre was thrilled to be asked to co-interview Gordon and Brian of the Violent Femmes on the occasion of their upcoming show at Summer Stage, re-starting an era of touring and recording for the band. The Violent Femmes were a hugely influential part of 1980's culture, starting with their massive hit “Blister in the Sun” in 1983 and continuing to this day. Their music was life-changing for Pierre and kicked-started his journey as a guitarist and songwriter.https://vfemmes.com/https://www.brian-viglione.com/biohttps://www.evr2.com/Theme song; Marchandise by Pierre de Gaillande, from the album franglais. Brian Ritchie, bassist for the folk punk band the Violent Femmes, joins host Kenneth Womack on this episode to chat about his first Beatles records and the 40th anniversary of the Femmes' debut album. Ritchie co-founded the Violent Femmes with percussionist Victor DeLorenzo in 1981, and the duo were later joined by singer-songwriter Gordon Gano. Ritchie came up with band's distinctive name on a whim, employing it during their early days playing in Milwaukee's coffee houses. In August 1981, the Violent Femmes were discovered performing on a street corner in front of the Oriental Theatre by James Honeyman-Scott, the guitarist for the Pretenders, and Chrissie Hynde invited the Femmes to play an acoustic set prior to the Pretenders' show that night. In 1983, the Violent Femmes released their self-titled debut album, which emerged as a key soundtrack for the burgeoning alternative and college-oriented rock movements. The inaugural LP featured many of the band's best-known songs, including “Blister in the Sun,” “Kiss Off,” “Add It Up,” and “Gone Daddy Gone.” The album became the Femmes' most successful LP, eventually earning platinum status from the Recording Industry Association of America. Over the years, the Femmes have recorded 10 studio albums, including Hallowed Ground (1984), The Blind Leading the Naked (1986), and Why Do Birds Sing? (1991). The group is widely considered to be a key influence on the 1980s and 1990s alternative rock scene. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/everythingfabfour/support

Perhaps no band benefited from the beauty of the mix tape better than the Violent Femmes. However, you could argue that no other band led to the proliferation of the art form of creating a mix tape more than the Femmes. The simpleness of song structure (and production) and the adolescent lyrical content (one reviewer calling it "uber-elementary sing-alongs") were absolutely {chef's kiss} to represent frustrated, angsty teenagers of the 1980s and '90s. It makes sense -- chief songwriter Gordon Gano began writing much of these tunes when he was 15, after all. Their debut 1983 album includes classics like "Blister in the Sun," "Gone Daddy Gone," "Kiss Off," "Add It Up" and more -- all songs that hit the nerve of what it means to be a young person. It's no surprise that the Violent Femmes can still be heard on "mix tapes" (aka playlists) even today.
For the 40th anniversary of Violent Femmes' classic debut album, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After bassist Brian Ritchie and drummer Victor DeLorenzo first started playing around Milwaukee as a rhythm section, they met a teenage songwriter named Gordon Gano. Despite having limited experience and still just being in high school, Gano had an extraordinary set of good songs that he had already written. Violent Femmes began playing as a trio but weren't able to get many gigs in town so they started playing acoustically on the street. One day they decided to play for a line of people outside the Oriental Theater who were there to see the Pretenders. James Honeyman-Scott was on a break from soundcheck and became interested in this band playing outside the theater. He convinced the rest of the Pretenders to listen and Chrissie Hynde ended up inviting the Femmes to open for them that night. Though the impromptu gig didn't lead to other opportunities, it gave them a boost of confidence to continue doing what they were doing. Shake Records became interested in releasing an album so they booked studio time with producer Mark Van Hecke. The label deal fell through but they decided to keep the studio time with the help of a loan from DeLorenzo's father. The recordings they made ended up on Slash Records' radar and they eventually released the Violent Femmes debut album as is in 1983. In this episode, Gordon Gano reflects on being a bored and lonely teenager who had a drive to write songs as a way to get out frustration. Brian Ritchie describes his unconventional approach to the acoustic bass guitar that helps give Violent Femmes their signature sound. Victor DeLorenzo offers his perspective on using brushes, a snare drum and his invention called the trancephone in order to have a simple setup that could be moved easily and played on the street. From being booed by thousands of Milwaukeans to punk music played acoustically to embracing the improvisation of Sun Ra to the first album as a mixtape that continues to get passed between generations, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.
Interview with Victor DeLorenzo Of Violent Femmes & The Night Crickets DeLorenzo was born in 1954, the son of Victor and Charlotte DeLorenzo, grew up in Racine, Wisconsin, and has lived in Milwaukee since. He has been a drummer since the age of 16 while attending St. Catherine's High School (Racine, Wisconsin), and has been an actor since the age of five. While attending the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, he auditioned for and was accepted into Theatre X in 1976, and worked with them in various roles for more than 20 years.[ As a drummer, DeLorenzo paired up with bassist Brian Ritchie in 1980, as a rhythm section they called "Violent Femmes". When singer, guitarist, and songwriter Gordon Gano joined them in 1981, the band kept the name.[2] DeLorenzo's father loaned the band $10,000 to record their eponymous debut album in 1982. However, the band was forced to delay its release until 1983 after they signed to Slash Records. DeLorenzo's signature sound is a result of his minimalist drum kit. He often uses nothing more than a snare drum, a tranceaphone and steel brushes. The tranceaphone consists of a metal bushel basket inverted over a tom. He favors this style of kit because in their early days, the band often played on the streets. DeLorenzo continued to act with Theatre X, and record and tour with the Femmes until 1993, when he left to devote more time to acting and to recording his own music. He toured as part of Moe Tucker's band in that year. In 1996 he opened a recording studio called "Joe's Real Recording" He has released three solo records since 1990. In addition to recording his own music, he has played with several side projects, including Ash Can School. In 2000, he teamed up with Ritchie to put together a Femmes compilation, and subsequently rejoined the band until it disbanded again in 2009.In March 2013, Gano, Ritchie and DeLorenzo reformed Violent Femmes once more and played a homecoming show at the Summerfest music festival in their native Milwaukee. Three months later, in July, the band announced a new line-up with Dresden Dolls member Brian Viglione as the band's drummer. DeLorenzo confirmed in a statement that he had left the Femmes permanently because of a failure of the band members to resolve their long-standing business disputes. DeLorenzo performs percussion in the chamber rock duo Nineteen Thirteen with cellist Janet Schiff. Nineteen Thirteen's recording of "Hurricane Noel" was featured in the 2011 TED Global Conference. Night Crickets, a long-distance groove affair conducted during the drawn-out days of lockdown and beyond. Featuring David J, Victor DeLorenzo, and Darwin Meiners. Iconic and foundational bands in the history of alternative music certainly include Bauhaus, Love And Rockets, and Violent Femmes. San Francisco born artist Darwin Meiners was a fan of all three. A chance meeting 13 years ago with David J (Bauhaus, Love & Rockets) grew into a friendship, and Darwin not only became a bandmate, but David J's manager. After reaching out to Victor DeLorenzo through e-mail, Darwin met the Violent Femmes drummer after the Femmes' Coachella set in 2013. Soon after the three collaborated on Darwin's 2014 release Souvenir. As the pandemic took hold, Darwin was looking for a new project to occupy the lock-down time and approached Victor, who was keen to proceed and suggested that David join as well. The musical trust established between these three was immediate and Night Crickets were born. Within weeks a global process was initiated between them, the recordings eventually forming the album, A Free Society. To say this is something of a dream come true for music fans would be entirely accurate. (The band's name came from one of many Zoom meetings between the three members. After addressing various pressing musical issues the conversation rambled somewhat and turned to the subject of David Lynch, with David J telling an anecdote which was told to him by Lynch's sound designer, John Neff. Lynch had asked Neff to obtain a field recording of crickets chirping at night for inclusion in Mulholland Drive. When Neff played him the tape, the director immediately recognized the sound that the insects make when it is light which is apparently a little different to their nocturnal chirp. “No! No! No! These are day crickets, John! I want my night crickets!” Victor, Darwin, and David then shared a look of mutual realization and instantly agreed that the project now had a name!)
Indie legend Brian Ritchie of Violent Femmes appears on the latest installment of Gone In 30 Minutes to chat about life on the big, blue(ish) marble. A seminal figure of punk, Ritchie thinks back to his upbringing in Milwaukee, the band’s…let’s say…less-than-ideal deal with Slash Records and the incessant nature of music itself. And Ritchie hasn’t stopped either—in addition to curating for annual music and arts festival MONA FOMA, in his homeland of Tasmania, he’s been broadcasting daily performances so we never lose touch of that “American Music.”
SUPPORT ME ON PATREON WATCH MUSIC is not a GENRE VIDEOS and MORE When a new band finds the right name for itself, it's magic. They don't always get it right the first time. Imagine if “Jeremy” was released by Mookie Blaylock. Or if The Hype did “With or Without You”. Or the Young Aborigines scored a hit with “Sabotage”. Those band names do not support the attitude & spirit of the songs. Thankfully inspiration gave us the far more dead-on Pearl Jam, U2 and the Beastie Boys. And those are three of dozens of famous bands that took some trial and error to nail the name. Violent Femmes, however, killed it right off. Sure, it was intended as an off the cuff joke name. But as soon as the two founding members, Brian Ritchie and Victor DeLorenzo, discovered Gordon Gano, it made perfect sense. Brian and Victor had the post-punk rhythm and attitude with an extra shot of weirdness. Gordon had the singing chops - nasal weird kid-like talk-singing that fit so well, and songs that spoke openly about sensitive, painful, awkward feelings without the defensiveness that often pushes singer/songwriters to macho it up. It was raw and new and instantly worked. Their music embodied both the violent “masculine” emotional confusion all adolescents feel, and the vulnerability of undressed honesty often associated with a person's “feminine” side. And by doing so without apology it showed all that masculine-feminine stuff is bullcrap. There's no reason to label what a person feels, how they act, or how they express themselves. Open up and say whatever comes out. Get angry and aggressive. Get confessional and insecure. It's all just being a complete and truly vulnerable human. Did they intend for their name to represent all this? Or their music for that matter? No. The synergy was accidental. The unadorned arrangements (acoustic bass AND drums with no kick!), vocals and words just happened to come together to embody the exact gender duality the name hints at. And they did it with an in-your-face, we don't care what you think folk punk attitude that influenced a whole generation of bands. They were pre-emo - one of the seminal 1980s bands that gave permission for tons of other bands to get confessional without defense. And I'm included in that group. Whenever I'd write lyrics that felt too raw and revealing, I looked to the Femmes (and the Cure and few others) to reassure me that I didn't need to hide the words behind aggressive music. Below are an early-ish song and a much more recent one that both show this. NICK – “You Can't Touch Me” (from the album Listen You People) REC – “Lost Found” (from the album Sympathy for the Weird) Do you remember the Femmes? Did you know they just put out a new album last year? Are there other bands you like who hold this same kind of duality? Discuss dammit! Curly fries? Overrated, according to Gordon Gano of Violent Femmes. The band Japan? Underrated...although we didn't pick 'em during this episode. Come on, we wouldn't let you off that easy with a spoiler alert! Join Brett, Uncle Gregg, and Knucklehead Smith...oops, we mean Bueno...as they champion the underdogs, the '80s bands who deserve more love, the bands who should be playing arenas instead of '80s cruises (although those do sound pretty awesome). Who's on your list? Storm our Facebook page at facebook.com/onlythreelads and let us know! If you don't, old Knucklehead Smith is gonna get really sore at ya, see? This episode is dedicated to the memory of legendary alternative music DJ Steve West, 1951-2020.

2019 marks the 20th anniversary of the founding of Lost Bayou Ramblers by Andre and Louis Michot. In this episode of Discover Lafayette, the brothers had just come back from a five-month touring hiatus and visited with Jan Swift about their journey to becoming an established international presence on the music scene. Worklight Pictures created the “rockumentary,” On Va Continuer, capturing the personal and professional story behind the band, whose members also include Johnny Campos (electronic guitarist), Eric Heigle (electronics and acoustic guitar), Bryan Webre (electric bassist) and drummer Kirkland Middleton. The film looks at the modern Cajun culture and the importance of sustaining the Cajun French language. Mark your calendar for the celebration of Lost Bayou Rambler’s 20th anniversary on September 28, 2019 and viewing of the film at the Acadiana Center for the Arts. Growing up, Andre and Louis performed Cajun music as members of Les Frères Michot, the band their father, Tommy Michot, and uncles formed in the 1980's. While they had taken lessons to learn guitar (Andre) and classical violin (Louis), their talent blossomed when they picked up instruments and taught themselves the intricacies of the accordion (Andre) and fiddle (Louis). Andre has actually mastered the art of building accordions as an adult musician, and the brothers have learned to play other instruments by ear and by watching each other as they jammed together and with Les Frere Michot. The Lost Bayou Rambler’s musical lyrics are performed solely in French, but the men didn’t grow up speaking the language. It took a solo journey by Louis to St. Anne’s University in Nova Scotia in 1998 to learn French and that is where he picked up the fiddle, using an instrument his grandfather had handed down. For Louis, learning the language was facilitated by singing the words and learning the rhythm as he played the fiddle on the streets. In August 1999, the brothers booked their first gig as a yet-to-be-named band at Café Rue Vermilion in downtown Lafayette. On the way, Louis stopped by to see his friend, the late Ryan Domingue, who asked what their name was. When Louis said, “We don’t have one,” Ryan offered up “Lost Bayou Ramblers” which both young men loved. For background on this story and information on the Rue Vermilion Revival and Flood Relief Fundraiser in 2016, visit here. Lost Bayou Ramblers received a Grammy nomination for its 2007 release of Live a la Blue Moon. In 2012, the band released Mammoth Waltz with the help of producer Korey Richey and guest artists Gordon Gano, Scarlett Johansson, and Dr. John. Mammoth Waltz was named #2 in the “Top 21 Louisiana albums of the 21st Century” by Times Picayune. Lost Bayou Ramblers’ contribution to the score of Beasts of the Southern Wild in 2012 brought them renown worldwide, and we end this interview with the haunting melody of their music from the film. After their live appearance on NPR’s World Café, Lost Bayou Ramblers was rated #1 on “David Dye’s five favorite live music moments in and out of the World Café studio.” And then, in 2017, the band won a Grammy for Best Regional Roots Music Album for Kalenda. The bands' performance on the 2017 PBS documentary series American Epic, solidified Lost Bayou Ramblers' international reputation as an iconic Cajun band. Lost Bayou Ramblers recently released their score to the highly acclaimed and award-winning Rodents of an Unusual Size, which aired on PBS earlier this year. The film documents the unusual relationships people have with the large rodents. The music was released on March 29 and is available via Bandcamp on CD, and all major streaming and paid download sites. You can check out the music here. The spoken words of Louis and Andre are inspirational and engaging. Their story is worth a listen. Thanks to the brothers for sharing their journey.

Gordon Gano of Violent Femmes on Johnny Thunders and The Heartbreakers "Live at Max's Kansas City."
Brian and Bill welcome DJ Wendy Rollins (radio1045.com) and musician Paul Nance (theloudcompany1.bandcamp.com) from the Alter Natives podcast to help us discuss the Violent Femmes' self titled debut album (1983, Slash). Working as an acoustic trio, the band was discovered while busking outside a Pretenders concert. After playing a short set at that show, the band began work on this album, mostly written while primary singer/songwriter Gordon Gano was still in high school. Wendy and Paul share their experiences discovering the band in college (Wendy) and, surprisingly, at an earlier age (Paul) and how it helped shape their lives. Bill, Brian, Paul, and Wendy discuss receiving their copy of this album at college freshman orientation, the band's success in their later years, their dorky image and id-driven rock, the inter-band conflict over selling a song to Wendy's Old Fashioned Burgers, what genre the Femmes fit in and their timeless sound, songs with involuntary physical reactions, Brian and Wikipedia being in agreement, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, any perceived misogyny or sexism on the album, the music literally saving Wendy's life, Beatle-esque harmonies, Jeb!, xylophone vs. marimba, what the heck a tranceaphone is, and the ubiquitous track by track review!
