They not only provide a place of learning, reading and other similar resources, but libraries can also provide a place of refuge, community, and acceptance. There's a lot of love for libraries in this episode, and Aaron shares some amazing stories and insights from his time working there. Timestamps: 00:00 What I'm Reading and Podcast Recommendation 07:05 Interview with Aaron Whitfield 34:25 Conclusion Find Aaron online: https://www.iammufali.com/ Books Mentioned: Fresh Brewed Murder by Emmeline Duncan Broken Places & Outer Spaces by Nnedi Okorafor Life Itself by Roger Ebert They Can't Kill Us Until They Kill Us by Hanif Abdurraqib Podcasts Mentioned: Victorian Scribblers: https://victorianscribblers.com/ The Semi-Social Life of a Black Introvert Podcast: https://www.iammufali.com/podcast.html Find Me online: Voxer: @artbookshelfodyssey Discord: https://discord.gg/8MFceV2NFe Facebook Group Page: @thebookshelfodyssey Twitter: @odyssey_podcast Instagram: @bookshelfodysseypodcast Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ArtBookshelfOdysseyEmail: bookshelfodysseypodcast@gmail.com I'm now a bookshop.org affiliate - check out my shop and find your next great read! https://bookshop.org/shop/bookshelfodyssey https://www.buymeacoffee.com/bookshelfpod #libraries #podcasts #booktube

Ross the Boss, is a guitarist, known as a founding member of both the punk band the Dictators, and the heavy metal band Manowar. Death Dealer began as an online collaboration but quickly gelled into a supergroup. The band toured the world for their two albums 2013 "Warmaster" and 2015 "Hallowed Ground". On January 18, 2017, Ross was inducted into the Hall of Heavy Metal History for his contributions to speed metal while in Manowar. Ross' latest effort, Born of Fire, is his - which arrived a few years after their chart breaking 2018 effort, By Blood Sworn. While Ross the Boss used this time for extensive touring, they still found time to build their latest epics - which undoubtedly excite fans worldwide. Born of Fire is pounding yet fresher and heavier out of the speakers than before - without forgoing any of the typical Ross the Boss trademarks. And Ross' future plans are simple. “Touring hard. Doing well. And just continue doing what we're doing. I think the record will speak for itself, and the future will be golden for this band.” Please welcome monster guitarist and founding member of both the punk band the Dictators, the heavy metal band Manowar and Death Dealer… ROSS THE BOSS to Interviewing the Legends. HEAVY Music Interviews

Since relocating to Melbourne and giving his band Larry Leadfoot a bit of a makeover in the process, drummer Nick Parkinson has experienced all of the highs and lows in a short amount of time – much like the fickle Melbourne weather. After successfully restructuring the band and playing a few East Coast shows, COVID did what it has done to musicians the world over and threw a stick in the spokes of the newly oiled machine, but rather than let it get the better of him, Parkinson decided to focus his energies on Larry Leadfoot and look inwards rather than take the conventional road of releasing new material. With the bands debut E.P Hellxotica still fresh in his mind, coupled with the fact he knew it was a better release than it had been given the chance to experience due to current events, Parkinson made the decision to re-release Larry Leadfoot's existing material in an effort to take it to a larger audience. That starts now with the (re) release of the single SWAB, which will be premiered through HEAVY on November 26.Nick sat down with us to chat about the music and the decision to re-release it."It starts off with a groove, but it's a very off kilter kind of, jilted... there's patterns that overlap each other with the beat. There's a word for that that I can't remember (laughs). When we were writing and coming up with ideas, I have never used Latin Beats in a song before, so I started learning latin beats from my teacher years ago and it occurred to me to try and chuck some of those in with some extreme metal which I hadn't heard too much of. We came up with these ideas that started flowing. We had our white board in there in the rehearsal space and constantly going over it every day until it smoothed out into a pattern that flowed. By the time it got to a couple of months in t felt like it was complete. it's like an extreme metal journey in a way.”In the full interview, Nick runs us through SWAB in greater detail, the decision behind re-releasing the E.P, future new music, getting back out on the road and more.

The National Fire Academy is the home of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial; hallowed ground for any firefighter. To borrow a phrase from President Lincoln at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg, PA (just 12 miles north of the NFA), the memorial on the NFA campus reminds us “that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion.” While Bill was at the National Fire Academy for two weeks in Emmitsburg, Maryland this last August, he sat down with Eriks Gabliks, the Superintendent of the National Fire Academy. They talked about what the National Fire Academy is, what it isn't, just how you start out as a volunteer firefighter and end up as superintendent, some of the more popular myths about the campus, why every firefighter should attend a class there at least once, and, of course, we give Eriks The Questions.

In this short second-part discussion, Doug Gardner of the Florida National Cemetery chats about that cemetery and its central location within the battle space of the Second Seminole War. Guest Doug Gardner is a Vietnam veteran. He heads FNC’s monument committee and serves on the Joint Veterans Support Committee. Doug is executive vice president of Flags of Fallen Vets Inc, for Florida. No Seminole Wars veterans are interred there -- a headstone memorializes Creek Indian David Moniac whose remains are thought to be in St Augustine with Major Dade's fallen men. However, as our fellow guest Chris Kimball has pointed out, there is at least one known Seminole Wars reenactor buried at FNC. That Air Force veteran is David "Chobee" Exum.  The former delivery driver volunteered for Hillsborough River State Park Native American Living History Programs. Kimball said the funeral for Exum, one of the original group of Second Seminole War reenactors, was quite a spectacle since many of his fellow reenactors paid their respect in full Native American garb.  Chobee was a member of the Royal Rangers and of the Native American Outreach. Two news articles discuss his work.  A schematic of the FNC's various sections would help one find his grave. His memorial ID is 15901000 Host Patrick Swan is a board member with the Seminole Wars Foundation. He is a combat veteran and of the U.S. Army, serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, and Kosovo, and at the Pentagon after 9/11. A military historian, he holds masters degrees in Public History, Communication, and Homeland Security, and is a graduate of the US Army War College with an advanced degree in strategic studies.

SUPPORT ME ON PATREON WATCH MUSIC is not a GENRE VIDEOS and MORE This week is all about country music, so I thought I'd discuss one of my top ten favorite bands of all time: Violent Femmes. Yes, that's right. The Femmes. And country music. They link. Seriously. Read on, and then go listen to the three albums I'm featuring this week, and it'll hit you like a pickup truck on fire. Those of you who know anything about the Femmes probably only know the big party hits from their debut 1983 self-titled album, like “Blister in the Sun” or “Add It Up”. That album was a blast of acoustic punk that launched the Femmes as one more post-punk band rewriting the rules of the genre. And if that's how you know them, then there are at least three things you probably don't know: 1. Their highest charting single was “American Music” from 1991's Why Do Birds Sing? (Which also had an awesome cover of Culture Club's “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?”) 2. They are still around, and in fact released their latest album just last year, which sounds a fuckload like their early stuff. 3. They went through a country music phase. For realz. Their 2nd, 3rd& 4th albums were predominantly country. You could call it alt country (before the term existed), southern gothic, freak folk, country rock or folk punk. Point is, it ain't just acoustic punk. Listen to almost anything from Hallowed Ground, The Blind Leading the Naked, or 3, and you're going to hear country music. “Country Death Song”, “Jesus Walking on the Water”. “Old Mother Reagan”, “Breakin' Hearts”, “Cold Canyon”. “Fat”, “Lies”. Straight-up country twang, y'all. Not that that's all they did, then or ever. But the fact that they went there in their own special way – that fucking rocks. The Femmes have sunk so deep into my subconscious that it's hard to pinpoint how they've influenced me. There's a chance that – like with the Beatles or Prince – their influence is somewhere in every song I've ever written. Throwing in a rogue lyric here & there to keep things honest & fresh. A vocal delivery that runs the range from whispery to strident to plaintive to balls out abrasive, but always with emotion. Unafraid to get negative but still keep it popping. There are so many songs I can use as an example, but DUH I have to go with the one that was named after possibly my favorite Femmes song (from Hallowed Ground): REC - “Never Tell” (from the album Distance To Empty) Listen to the Femmes' “Never Tell” too and see if you can find any parallels. What songs of the Femmes do you know and/or love? Does this make you want to go deeper into their catalogue? Do you prefer straight-up country music? Or do you hate it all? Discuss dammit! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nick-dematteo/support

Episode 7: History Makes for Hallowed Ground Short Mountain Distillery is located on Short Mountain Rd. A road I’m very familiar with. I drive it every time I go to band practice, but as I drove it for my interview, it seemed different. The distillery sits right in the middle of nature, nestled right at the foot of Short Mountain. The view from the parking lot is breathtaking. But, even with all the beauty, there’s so much dark history literally growing from these mountains. I park my car near the distillery’s restaurant and proceed to the building that houses all of the stills. It’s the end of the day, so they are beginning to close up shop. It’s almost dark, I knock and open the door. Billy is in the office, rocking a handlebar mustache and suspenders--essential clothing for all moonshiners. I don’t waste any time. I tell him the story of Slim. A while back, Randy and I did a classic records episode on “Hallowed Ground” by Skin Yard, a band that I consider one of the architects of the late 80’s / early 90’s Northwest heavy rock sound which brought the world Soundgarden, Nirvana, Melvins and Pearl Jam. Shortly after that episode went up, I was in touch with Daniel House, Skin Yard’s founding bassist, C/Z Records owner and former Sub-Pop Records operative. It took a while to organize, but Daniel and I found some time to chat about the formation of Skinyard, the beginning of what became a major epoch of heavy rock and progress on his oral history documenting Skinyard and it’s place in the pantheon of “Grunge” (how I hate that term!) royalty.Intro: “1000 Smiling Knuckles”Outro: “Wither” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
