Jake Plummer has a major name here in the treasure valley of Idaho, as he's a Capital High School legend! Growing up in this area, we often heard his name thrown around, which is why this is such an awesome interview for me, years later, on this platform! On today's episode, Jake will chat with us about his upbringing and how important being 'active' was for him in regards to all the sports he competed in. He was ALWAYS outside doing something, which is a lost art in today's world it appears. We'll learn of his favorite experiences at Capital High School and then what it was like going to Arizona State where Jake became a legend. What were his favorite memories as the Sundevils Quarterback? What about the Nebraska game that really took that team on an upward trajectory and sort of (in a sense) de-railed Nebraska as a whole haha. What was the biggest transition to the college level? Of course we'll talk in-depth about his professional career! What was it like playing the game as a professional. What was the grind like? Favorite memories? We have a discussion on the playbook as well and how to handle different styles of coaching while being a team player. One of the best parts of sports for me, is seeing how sports work in business as well. Which is why it's also so great that Jake is here to chat about Umbo, his mushroom company. Don't be worried, he's going to explain the difference between functional mushrooms and psychedelics, but you're going to see WHY he's helping promote this style of living as he's taken a LOT of hits during his day. He'll share with us the science and reasoning behind supplementing with them and how they've helped him out. You can learn more by watching their 20-minute documentary on the aftermath of the racist abuse, or follow their Instagram for updates. This week on Reported we’re highlighting the life of a New Mexican who, despite living on multiple front lines of the pandemic as a healthcare worker, a student, and a mother, has managed to both further her career and her education. Stephanie Solis is just 20 years old with a four-year-old son, Aiden. She’s stepping toward her goal of becoming a nurse, while working as a home health aide. She lives with her mom and younger brother, who is 15—the same age she was at Capital High School when she got pregnant. But Stephanie still graduated and started her secondary education and career, with the help of Lauren Whitehurst and the Mother Tongue Project. Normally every year the Santa Fe Reporter publishes multiple essays from the Mother Tongue Project, an organization that creates and supports academic literacy skills specifically for young parents, mostly girls. The essays are written by teenaged mothers from Capital High School, and Stephanie was one of those writers before she graduated in 2018. But this year, because of the pandemic, only one of those essays will be published on our website, and the author didn’t want to be recorded. But we still wanted to highlight a New Mexican who’s living many of the struggles hundreds of thousands of people across the state are struggling with right now: the possibility of getting sick, little help from the government, no childcare and financial problems. So in episode two of Reported, the Santa Fe Reporter’s podcast, we’re catching up with Stephanie two years after graduation and the publication of her Mother Tongue essay, to see how far she has come and what life is like for a young woman who isn’t even old enough to drink and yet is on multiple frontlines in the pandemic. I spoke with Stephanie over the phone while she was at home one evening, so you will definitely hear her son Aiden in the background. Music: Lone Pinon

Dr. Melba Patillo Bales is a truly great figure in history and in this country. She is one of the high school students from 1957, the Little Rock 9, who played a significant role in desegregation. The Federal Court had ruled on integration in all schools. Even at a very young age Melba did not understand segregation, so she was a natural candidate for the group of black students selected to attend Capital High School in Little Rock. In her memoir "March Forward, Girl" she tells of her youth and life in the south in the 1940s and 1950s. www.melbapatillobales.com
