Leitura Bíblica Do Dia: Salmo 116:1-7 Plano De Leitura Anual: 1 Crônicas 7–9; João 6:22-44 Já fez seu devocional hoje? Aproveite e marque um amigo para fazer junto com você! Confira: No livro Physics, Charles. R. Mann e George. “Amo o Senhor, porque ele ouve a minha voz e as minhas orações. […] ele se inclina para ouvir…” (vv.1-2).

Imagine trying to visualize something in your mind, only to be met with a blank canvas. This is the reality for people with aphantasia, a condition where the mind's eye struggles to conjure images. In this episode of ADHD for Smart Ass Women, I'm joined by Dr. Chelsea Twiss, a licensed psychologist from Colorado with an impressive background. She specializes in ADHD, women's health, chronic pain, and relationships, and conducts psychological testing with a focus on adult ADHD. As if that wasn't enough, she's also a talented musician and artist, holding a doctorate in counseling psychology from New Mexico State University.Interestingly, Chelsea experiences hyperphantasia, the opposite of aphantasia, where mental imagery is remarkably vivid and detailed. Her research delves into the fascinating connections between ADHD, trauma, and brain function, particularly in relation to visual memory and identity. Our conversation explores how cognitive differences like aphantasia and hyperphantasia can significantly influence the ADHD experience, especially for women who often face unique challenges in diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Twiss and I discuss the ways in which ADHD can alter how we perceive and process visual information, highlighting the importance of understanding these nuances when diagnosing and treating ADHD, particularly in women who are frequently misunderstood and underdiagnosed. JR Lilly is seemingly one of the most connected people in East Portland! He is a cornerstone member of our community and a member of the Dineh (Navajo Nation). In this conversation, JR sets the tone by framing his identity by introducing himself from an indigenous worldview and how that framework of collectivism differs from individualism. He grew up in extreme poverty on the Navajo Reservation and wanted a way out of poverty. He studied business administration at Lee University in Tennessee. JR shares the many ways he's sought healing from trauma and encourages others to seek healing. JR came across the book One Church, Many Tribes by Richard Twiss, which was also an influential book for my faith when I read it (and later Rescuing The Gospel From The Cowboys: A Native American Expression Of The Jesus Way). JR worked with Twiss which brought him to the Northwest and was impacted by Twiss's focus on being a good neighbor and being present in his community at the expense of his worldwide influence and income. Because of JR's humble desire to serve others coupled with his business background and experience with non-profit law, budgets, and fundraising at NAYA, he is often invited to be on non-profit boards. He currently serves on eight (8!) boards:Portland Parks FoundationUrban Forestry CommissionHistoric ParkroseOur Just Future (formerly Human Solutions)National Christian Community Development AssociationRedtail WoodworksMending Wings (Yakima)Peace Center Academy (Hopi) in addition to committee work with:East Portland Action Plan, economic subcommittee cochairThrive East PDXEast Portland Tax Increment Finance Exploration CommitteeEast Portland Parks Coalition These are all volunteer positions on top of his job as Director of the Office of Community Involvement for Multnomah County. JR recently worked with the Trail Blazers for Native American Heritage Month. He talks about being guided by a higher power and his journey of healing that led him to measure his impact differently as he matured. We go deeper from there and circle back to JR's work in Parkrose, so if you've read this far without listening, give the podcast a listen and let me know what you think, or get in touch with JR!

The American Library Association declared October 1-7 "Banned Books Week." In this segment, Carol Roberts, head of Young People's Services at Troy Public Library, discusses a few books commonly banned (both fiction and non-fiction), some of the topics that usually raise concern (hint: sexuality & LGBTQIA-related works), and the disservice to children in limiting their access to materials. She notes that she supports parents' right to decide what their own children read, but that folks should not have the right to decide what others should have access to. Books discussed: "A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo" (Bundo & Twiss, 2018); "It's So Amazing: A Book About Eggs, Sperm, Birth, Babies and Families" (non-fiction, Harris, 2014); "Speak" (Anderson, 1999); "The Witches" (Dahl, 2007); and "The Fault in Our Stars" (Green, 2012). For more info, see www.thetroylibrary.org or stop by the Banned Books display at the Troy Library's main branch at 100 Second St. in downtown Troy. On the 10th anniversary of Richard Twiss passing, we remember and honor him.
Diane and Brandon were joined by Brett Twiss, Learning Coach at Capital High School in Boise, ID. Fresh off the heels of a massive investment in student-centered coaches (50 new hires in the district for this past fall), Brett shares about his early successes, his desire to amplify the great things that are taking place, and his desire to coach from the role of a learner. After hearing the conversation, it's not shocking that he has had a very successful first semester as a coach.
Eminent jurist, Oxford professor, advocate to the Archbishop of Canterbury, Travers Twiss (1809–1897) was a model establishment figure in Victorian Britain, and a close collaborator of Prince Metternich, the architect of the Concert of Europe. Yet Twiss's life was defined by two events that threatened to undermine the order that he had so stoutly defended: a notorious social scandal and the creation of the Congo Free State. In King Leopold's Ghostwriter: The Creation of Persons and States in the Nineteenth Century (Princeton UP, 2021), Dr. Andrew Fitzmaurice tells the incredible story of a man who, driven by personal events that transformed him from a reactionary to a reformer, rewrote and liberalised international law—yet did so in service of the most brutal regime of the colonial era. In an elaborate deception, Twiss and Pharaïlde van Lynseele, a Belgian prostitute, sought to reinvent her as a woman of suitably noble birth to be his wife. Their subterfuge collapsed when another former client publicly denounced van Lynseele. Disgraced, Twiss resigned his offices and the couple fled to Switzerland. But this failure set the stage for a second, successful act of re-creation. Twiss found new employment as the intellectual driving force of King Leopold of Belgium's efforts to have the Congo recognised as a new state under his personal authority. Drawing on extensive new archival research, King Leopold's Ghostwriter recounts Twiss's story as never before, including how his creation of a new legal personhood for the Congo was intimately related to the earlier invention of a new legal personhood for his wife. Combining gripping biography and penetrating intellectual history, King Leopold's Ghostwriter uncovers a dramatic, ambiguous life that has had lasting influence on international law. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose doctoral work focused on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. How do we better listen to indigenous people and learn more about God in the process? Today on the podcast we are discussing a fantastic speech from Native American Theologian Richard Twiss. We talk about how native people have been excluded from the theological conversation in church history and how we can start changing that. We all miss out on when we choose to dismiss other people's understanding of God because it seems weird to us. We discuss how this could be because in our pride we have subjugated God into a theological box.
