In this episode of "Running: State of the Sport," George and Amby chat with Kevin Hanson, one-half of the dynamic Hanson brothers behind the Hansons Brooks Running Team.  The Hansons team will have a strong group of entrants in the U.S Olympic Marathon Trials on February 3, including top male runner Zach Panning. Panning, while not as well known as some of his competitors, is considered a definite threat to finish on the podium.  Past Hansons' runners Brian Sell and Des Linden have been successful in their Marathon Trials efforts. In addition, Hansons' athletes have a sort of "inside track" to preparing for a big race in Orlando, Florida. The brothers and their runners have been using Orlando as a winter training base for several decades. They are well versed in all the weather-related variables. George and Amby were impressed by the way the Hansons brothers have taken profits from their running stores, and poured that money into a strong developmental program for U.S. runners. They also gave plenty of credit to their longtime partners at Brooks, and expressed complete confidence that Brooks super shoes are as good as anyone else's. Before talking to Kevin Hanson, George and Amby reviewed the biggest recent running news. That included C. J. Albertson's second 2:11 marathon in a week, Katelyn Tuohy's recent signing of a contract with Adidas, and the running Ritzenhein family. The backbone of so much music we know and love is made up of chords and chord progressions. In music, a chord is any harmonic set of frequencies consisting of multiple notes (also called "pitches") that are heard at the same time. And a chord progression is a series of chords played one after the other.  A common debate among songwriters out there is the question of … how many chords are needed when writing a great song? Some fall on the spectrum of more is better -  saying that more chords provide a wider palette to draw upon when conveying emotion to the listener, while others say that having too many chords in a song detracts from the lyrical impact and emotional delivery of the song. Well on today's show we are going to examine, and in some instances, try to make the case for the less-is-more side of this debate as we discuss our favorite songs with 3 chords of less!  Today we are joined by singer songwriter Paul Kleinert from PK and the In-Betweens.  Paul is a lifelong resident of the Lehigh Valley and kicked around the greater Philadelphia music scene during the 90s with his original band Waiting for Rain until the band dissolved in 2000. Other than a few open mics and a reunion show with his old band, Paul has remained off the stage and under the radar focusing his creative talent and energy on his career as a high school teacher.  He returned to the studio in 2019 with Philly Producer and Engineer Brian Bricklin at the helm.  Backed in the studio by a team of Philadelphia all-stars including Erik Johnson and Kevin Hanson of Huffamoose, Brendan McGeehan, Howie Gordon and Joanna Pacitti, Paul released the EP “A Lifetime of Almost” in early 2020.   PK is currently finishing his 2nd EP with Brian and working on a separate song cycle with Tyler Skye at Monoplane Recording Studio.  Spotify Playlist “Songs with 3 Chords or Less”www.rightfiction.comPK and the In-Betweens websitePK and the In-Betweens on Spotify

There are few in the sport that have so selflessly given back to it as Kevin Hanson, and he's been doing it for the last 40+ years. He has coached at every level from high school to community college to the pros. He and his brother started and continue to run the Hanson's Running Shops near Detroit, Michigan, and of course, they are also the co-founders and coaches of the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project, the program that produced Olympian and Boston Marathon Champion Desiree Linden. In this episode, Chris and Shanna talk to Kevin about his journey from growing up near Detroit, Michigan in a lower-middle-class family to now giving back to the sport and to his home city as a coach, race director, and store owner.  Kevin tells the hilarious story of his introduction to the marathon via his brother Keith boldly deciding to run one at the age of 13. He shares how his high school coach inspired him to get into coaching himself and to dream big, which ultimately led to the formation of the Hansons-Brooks team even though everyone told them it was a foolish idea. He talks about the evolution of the team from bringing Brooks on as a sponsor to producing their first Olympian in Brian Sell in 2008 and ultimately to the big win for Des Linden in Boston in 2018. Getting to the issues of clean sport, we discuss the zero-tolerance policy for doping on his team, the suspension of Alberto Salazar, the impact of super shoes on the roads and track, and the need for the re-allocation of funds from enriching the leaders in sports governance to more money for drug testing to catch the cheats.  Kevin is a no-nonsense kind of guy that operates with integrity, who will always speak the truth about any topic. This conversation with us was no exception. Thank you Kevin for all that you do for our sport and for clean sport.

Sat down with Keith and Kevin Hanson while in Atlanta to discuss the history of the Hansons-Brooks Original Distance Project as it celebrates 20 years of advancing U.S. distance running. We start by going back to the brothers’ roots in Michigan and the state of the sport in America before helping improve it. The Hansons made an emphasis on group training, which stood out to them from studying Ethiopians, Kenyans and Japanese. It started off as a $250,000 investment in a team that helped provide housing, health insurance, travel and equipment for a few runners but later blossomed with a partnership with Brooks. In 2008, they put Brian Sell on the U.S. Olympic Marathon team. They also helped develop and guide Des Linden into a two-time Olympian and Boston Marathon champion. In this episode, they’ll share some of the behind-the-scenes stories of those breakout moments in their history. “I'm comfortable saying I'm a marathoner and everything feeds into the next marathon and making sure that's great. So if that means being a little out of shape for some summer racing or some off-season racing, that's OK. I think you kind of check your ego when it comes to that stuff and know that it's playing into the bigger picture.” Two-time Olympian Des Linden comes on the podcast and discusses a wide range of topics including her pre-run coffee habits, how she pulled herself out of a slump last fall, what it's like to live with a triathlete, how she's approaching this year's Boston Marathon, and the importance of being open and honest about her journey as an athlete. “For me personally, it's sharing the entire experience. I didn't have to tell people that I was in a slump this fall or unmotivated or just didn't want to get out the door. But I think it's valuable and I think everyone goes through that—the person who's finishing last and the pros too—it's pretty universal and I think there's a lot of experiences like that,” Linden told me. “There's those days where you don't want to go out and run and there's those days where you just feel great and you share the entire experience and I think it will connect with more people. I think it's just talking about all of it because it is just a very universal sport—good days, bad days, injuries, the whole thing—and so the more you can share with people, the more they'll realize beyond the pace, everything is pretty similar. It's right foot, left foot, right foot, left foot, repeat, and that's all the way across the board, so there's gotta be some things we can connect on. It's just finding the ones that resonate.” Also in this episode, the 34-year-old native of Chula Vista, Calif., talks about training under Keith and Kevin Hanson as a member of the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project for the past 12 years, the state of competitive running in the U.S., the distant appeal of ultrarunning, how she views her job as a professional athlete, what she'd like to accomplish before she's done competing, the toughest athlete she's ever raced against, and so much more. Three-time U.S. Olympian Dathan Ritzenhein joined the CITIUS MAG Podcast just days after announcing that he has joined the Hansons-Brooks Original Distance Project and will be training under the guidance of Keith and Kevin Hanson in Michigan. Ritzenhein is now 34 years old but remains intent on trying to qualify for his fourth Olympic team in 2020. In this week's episode of the podcast, Ritzenhein discusses how different training is for him now that he's older, his key to longevity within the sport, lessons learned from coaches like Mark Wetmore, Alberto Salazar and Brad Hudson in his career, plus whether he thinks the more recent Colorado cross-country teams were better than the legendary 90s teams.

Luke Humphrey (Twitter) is a professional runner with the Hanson-Brooks Running team and the owner and head coach of Hanson Coaching Services. In this interview we talk to the Coach about how he got into running, what advice he has for busy athletes and his take on the state of the U.S. men's marathon scene. :45 How did you get your start in running? 2:40 What advice do you have for college runners who want to run post-collegiately? 5:25 What made you decide to transition from a professional runner to the owner and head coach at Hanson Coaching Services? 7:05 You have recently launched a new coaching site, Hanson Coaching Services, can you tell us about the new site and who the site and training is geared towards? 9:30 The Hanson Training system is a very well know and respected program inside the marathon and distance community. What made you decide to write a book about it? 10:45 Could you tell a new runner who has maybe not heard about what Keith and Kevin Hanson teach what makes your program training different? 12:00 As marathoning becomes more popular, more and more new first timers are turning to the challenge of running the marathon. For a new runner, who may be looking to finish a marathon to help raise money for their favorite charity, what advice would you have for them for going to from maybe 20-25 miles a week to a 26.2 in one session? 13:45 What type of weekly progression for the long run do you recommend for that 20-25 mile week runner? 16:25 Many of these recreational runners may have a spouse and three kids. They have work meetings in the morning, they have kids baseball games at night and just live busy lives. What advice do you have for someone who is finding a hard time creating the time to train to structure a weekly plan? 20:20 That runner is now running five days a week, of course, mileage will differ, but what would a typical training week look like on five days a week? 21:40 Looking at the U.S. Marathon scene, on the guys side, we have not seen a U.S. man go below 2:08 since Ritzenhein did it in 2012. Where do you see the future of the US Men’s team marathon runners in the next few years? 23:05 Of course Hanson-Brooks has Des Linden who will be running the Olympic marathon on the women’s side, how is she looking? 23:45A question that came in from Twitter, follow us @FinalSurge, have you thought about writing a book for a 5k runner and what differences would a book for a 5k training method have that is different than what is you your book. 25:40 A second question that came in, How would you modify the basic plan to have only two SOS sessions per week (master/veteran asking)? And maybe we need to explain what an SOS (Something of Substance) day is. 28:35 Can you let us know how you are using Final Surge to help your coaching clients? 29:55 You have made training plans available to purchase through Final Surge, who are those plans geared towards more of a beginner or an experienced runner.

Kari captures post-race interviews and stories with four inspirational runners after the Big Day 5K sponsored by Empowered Yoga. Kari and Serena Marie, RD, chat about Kari's experience as a race announcer at a triathlon in Maryland, as well as protein powder recommendations. Support is so important—and we don't mean sports bras!—when it comes to following your running dreams. From the logistics of getting ready for an early morning race or needing that pick me up at the halfway point in your race by seeing a homemade sign just for you, having your partner's support at home and on race day is paramount. On the show today, Kari chats with four runners after a recent 5K race. Here are some links to TRLS episodes mentioned or suggested: “Running on Transcendental Meditation With Dr. Norman Rosenthal” (Episode 133) “From Heart Surgery to Running Marathons: Brent Robertson's Story” (Episode 117) Featured Guests: Chelsea, Megan, Jenna, and Sherry Kari chats with four runners after the third annual Race on the Big Day 5K and 1.5-Mile Walk sponsored by Empowered Yoga in Wilmington, DE, on February 7, 2016. One popular theme seemed to be partners' support and being thankful and grateful for such support. You never know if you will be that spark for someone else, too! Chelsea This was Chelsea's first race post-baby to set a baseline. Her baby is two months old. She waited about seven weeks post-baby to start running again, and ran up until she was about 30 weeks pregnant. She had an injury that wouldn't heal, so her doctor told her to stop running at 30 weeks. Chelsea has been running since she was in junior high. She was on the high school cross country ski team, and she ran recreationally year round. She finds running to be mentally clearing and a great way to see different parts of cities. Mentally, she felt so much better when she got back into running after having her daughter. Her first run was about ten minutes long and included walk breaks. Finding the time and motivation is hard knowing that your pace will be slower and that you have to reset your expectations at first. Chelsea takes her daughter out on slower runs or brings her husband Dave with her to switch on and off while running. She says, “Whatever you can do is better than nothing.” Dave, Chelsea's husband, is the “rock star” husband. They've been married for eight years, and he know that's running is important to Chelsea and her sanity. Dave says it's a constant battle of conflicting schedules and time, but it makes it easier to co-exist. It's all about communication. Being a father to a newborn has changed coordinating runs for Dave. It's a planning exercise every time. Now you can't run on a whim or in the spur of the moment. Dave surprised her at the race to cheer her on! She thought he was going out for a car wash. Megan Pinnand She described the race at first as a long, uphill battle, and the race director, Matt Cutrona, did warn runners at the beginning to take it easy on the uphill swing! Megan started out too fast but slowed it down on the downhill portion. She's recovering from an injury, and it's her first race back. She tries to race once a month. Megan works full-time and has two kids. Her husband, David, and kids both run too. She ran a 5K in October with her five-year-old daughter. (It's a different challenge to run with children.) On weekends, she tries to run in the morning before her kids wake up. During the week, she gets up at 5:30 a.m. to run or she can run at lunchtime. In order to go to bed early, she has to turn off Netflix at night and go to bed on time. She focuses on her goals in order to do that. At work, running is a conversational topic, and it's a good reflection on herself when she reaches her goals and is happier after a run. She recommends trying to keep the same sleep habits, snag moments in the morning to herself, and stretch/sip coffee to battle the blues on non-run days. David takes the kids whenever he needs to and tells Megan to go for a run. If you have to spell it out to your partner, in black and white, then do it! Think about how you feel after you run as motivation to get you out the door. Jenna Tedesco Jenna mixed running with walking during the 5K. She contracted a very bad staph infection on her face that was near fatal. A year and a half later she had to have a hysterectomy and she was dropped her off the hospital table. She wound up with another staph infection and a perforated bowel. She was in and out of the hospital for months and continuously in the hospital for about six weeks. To keep on going, Jenna told herself that she could not die because she had a daughter that's now four years old. In the midst of all of that, she had an awareness that whatever it is she was going through, there are lessons embedded in the experience that will serve to polish herself as a human being. She practices and teaches meditation, is a health psychologist, and has developed a meditation program for the VA Medical Center, along with doing work nationally on policy. Jenna decided to come to the race because she is the chair of the Health Promotion and Disease Prevention committee (HPDP or “hippy dippy”), and as part of planning for events that would involve the staff and veterans, they identified 5Ks in the local area and promote them as opportunities for people to do some physical activity. Sherry Knapp Sherry lost 94 pounds with Weight Watchers and is a runner. She ended up having diabetes, high blood pressure, and low self-esteem. After a few months of eating right but not exercising, she decided to go to the gym. She lost more weight, and it felt so good to go to the gym. She would walk the treadmill and eventually started running. Tracy Rodriguez, a Weight Watchers leader, asked Sherry to join her at a 5K Delaware Mud Run, and she fell in love with racing. She runs with her husband Steve, and if he crosses the finish line, he gets a beer. During the summer, she started eating bean burgers instead of hamburgers. She doesn't eat a lot of red meat and now eats a lot of vegetables (like spinach or avocados). A way to support the show is to leave a TRLS review on iTunes! Serena Marie, RD Kari and Serena Marie, RD, chat about the importance of eating protein, Desiree Linden, and the New York City Marathon. Kari gives an update on her knee swelling and back injury and her opportunity to interview Olympic runner Desiree Linden. Her favorite yoga poses are the warrior poses. Desi was with her coach, Kevin Hanson, of the Hansons-Brooks Original Distance Project. Kari talks about being mentored by Ken Berger, a race announcer, who announces for the Marine Corps Marathon. He mentored her at the General Smallwood Sprint in Indian Head, MD. Kari mentions ADHD reWired with Eric Tivers. Serena talks about the importance of eating protein, especially for the elderly population. Serena recommends taking 3,000 mg of HMB to help prevent muscle mass breakdown. For vegetarians, Serena says to look at the ingredient list for a clean list (pea protein powder, hemp protein powder)—no trans fats, hydrogenated oils, no added sugars, and so on.Look at the macronutrient ratio; you don't want a lot of calories from carbohydrates. You don't need to spend money on an expensive carb-laden protein powder. Serena likes Vega, Sunwarrior, and Garden of Life protein powders. To shop for other products and also support the podcast, visit http://www.therunninglifestyle.com/support/. Kari recommends The Little Beet Serena recommends adding grapes to a kale smoothie (a portion size of 16 grapes for 15 grams of carbs). Gratitude Jar (Woot! Woot!) Kari is grateful because she was able to experience her trip to NY with her husband Robert and the Big Kahuna (her son Will). Robert took Will to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum while Kari interviewed people in Central Park. Serena is grateful that her grandma is OK after a health scare and can get more things that she needs to be healthy, happy, and safe. Next week, Kari interviews a mother-daughter trio who ran the relay option of the Delaware Marathon Running Festival in May 2016. They talk about the mother-daughter relationship, how running is a gift, and how we can share running with our families. Upcoming Events Kari will be in Northern Virginia around the July 4 weekend, so check out the Events page for more details! She'll also be attending the Podcast Movement Conference in Chicago July 6–8 and in the ‘burbs of Milwaukee and Madison, WI on July 11–13. E-mail Kari at Kari@TheRunningLifestyle.com to connect.
