On today's episode, one of Australia's most acclaimed singer-songwriters, Cash Savage, joins me on the show to put some respect onto Salt-N-Pepa's landmark classic album 'Very Necessary'. Cash talks about discovering the album as a twelve year old and then returning to it with a new perspective as an adult, the pioneering sexual politics of the record, how contemporary the album still feels, how it flips so many of the genre's gender norms, the melding of pop and hip-hop, being sex and sex worker positive, the audio play about the AIDS crisis that closes the record and more. Cash also talks about the reaction to her and the Last Drinks' latest album 'So This Is Love', the most emotionally charged songs to perform live, misinterpretations of her lyrics and her game 'meaningful or nonsense'.

It's been a minute between albums for Cash Savage and the Last Drinks. But the Melbourne songwriter has returned with her band after five years, and with an album of intense feeling. So This Is Love is a story of heartbreak, but also a celebration of love in all it's forms, and how it changes, and can still be with you when people are gone. This is a beautiful conversation with Cash. She shared so much, and also reminded me that, even when it hurts, love is always worth it. That feeling, the joy, the connection, and even the pain. From Luther Vandross to Harmony to The Beach Boys, this is a deeply honest conversation with one of Australia's best songwriters. Amber catches up with Cash at the Grace Darling, 24 hours after news is announced that her legendary uncle, Conway Savage (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds) has passed away. With a sense of nostalgia circling her, Cash shares her memories of the first pangs of love for her guitar. An aggressive, perhaps, child-like love developing in the early days, resulting in her smashing her first guitar against a woodpile "just for fun". She's since learned to savour her guitars since then, admitting to not being able to get rid of any of them. A memory of time spent with her dad as he taught his young daughter chords to her favourite songs, set up her for the trajectory she's on now; with a fan base spreading across Europe and a growing Australian audience acknowledging her as an Australian rock legend in the making. Instrumental is created and hosted by Amber Petty - sponsored by Yamaha Music Australia.

Xylouris White: Xylouris White is the brainchild of Greek singer and Lute guitar player George Xylouris and Australian drummer Jim White, who is best known for his work in Dirty Three. Often described as a fusion of free-jazz, avant rock and age-old folk tradition, this masterful 2 piece has gained worldwide recognition, playing in venues across the globe. The pair have released two albums, ‘Goat’, their 2014 debut, which topped the Billboard charts, and more recently, ‘Black Peak’ in late 2016. However, this innovative and quintessential band can not be squeezed into merely what they produce on record, as their live show is what really captures the heart and soul of their music. Recorded at the PBS FM Studios in Melbourne on the 11th of March, 2016. Engineered by Paul Maybury. Cash Savage And The Last Drinks: Cash Savage and the Last Drinks are what's still good about country music today. A combination of all the good things about blues and country, but with a dark spin on it, these Melbournians really hit the nail on the head when it comes to clever songwriting and musical arrangements. Touring around Australia and pulling some major support slots, most notably with The Peep Tempel, they have garnered a large support base, waiting on their every word. Having released three albums to date, their 2016 effort ‘One Of Us’ has been their largest success to date. Recorded at the PBS FM Studios in Melbourne on the 8th of February, 2017. Engineered by Alicia Saye & Paul Maybury, Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 5th of March 2017. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.
