GUEST:Adam Brotman, Forum3 co-founder & co-CEO, excels in enhancing brand-customer relationships and digital marketing through innovations such as loyalty schemes & mobile technology. His creativity earned him the #2 spot on Fast Company's "100 Most Creative People" in 2012 and the CDO Club named him CDO of the Year in 2015.  Adam's rich professional background includes strategic leadership roles at J.Crew, where he initiated their first loyalty program, and notably at Starbucks. As their inaugural Chief Digital Officer, he orchestrated the development of Starbucks' mobile payment, ordering, and loyalty platform. Adam's current board commitments include MOD Pizza Company and Ruby Tuesday, and he has previously served on the boards of Neiman Marcus and Brooks Running Shoe Company. THE EPISODE:   Adam Brotman helped envision and launch what's currently seen as the shining example of blockchain-based customer loyalty programs - the Starbucks Odyssey experience. Ashley chats with Adam to unpack what these programs can offer, and how blockchain technology & digital assets play pivotal roles in moving away from a short-term and transactional brand strategy, to a community-building approach which encourages storytelling, participation, and fun. He explains why on-chain loyalty programs are becoming easier to roll out, shares that most brands are afraid of experimentation (providing an opportunity to those willing to learn, pivot, and grow), and offers insights on how employees can drive innovation within their organizations. Adam also gives the audience a sneak peek into his current initiative, hive3.ai - where users can compete for great prizes from some of their favourite brands.GUEST QUOTE:"Think about Web3 as a technology or a capability set that can help enhance how you innovate your customer relationship transformation." Inderpal Bhandari rejoined IBM as Global Chief Data Officer in December 2015. In this newly created role, he has leveraged his extensive experience to lead the development of IBM’s data strategy and drive IBM’s internal cognitive enterprise transformation. The work has culminated in the AI Enterprise Blueprint; a roadmap for IBM’s clients on their own journeys to AI. Inderpal is an expert in transforming data into business value and improved customer experiences by delivering strategic, innovative capabilities that use analytic insights to enable growth and productivity. In 2017, he was named U.S. Chief Data Officer of the Year by the CDO Club, and has been featured as an industry expert by Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, US News & World Report, CNN, and FOX. Inderpal earned his Master of Science Degree in Electrical & Computer Engineering from the University of Massachusetts and holds a PhD in Electrical & Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. Learn more about Inderpal’s insights on harnessing the power of data and accelerating Artificial Intelligence (AI) implementation at IBM’s Journey to AI and Think blogs. In today’s podcast, we talk with Inderpal about data as a strategic asset, the challenge in ensuring new technologies are intuitive to engender user trust, and how Soldiers can be empowered to transform the Army into a data-centric culture. The following bullet points highlight key insights from our interview: Describing “data” as a field of study is like the “blind men describing an elephant,” each one will have a different, limited aspect of it, and thus, a different description. Data is now being recognized as more than just a record, as it can illuminate patterns and insights that can re-shape or invent new businesses and products. It is a strategic asset that is being referred to as the new oil, because it is “the fuel that drives the engine.” Scaling is the goal of any chief data officer of a large company with a global footprint. The first key step is to understand what the company is trying to do, or for a commercial company, how they are trying to make money, and using the data strategy to enable that goal. For a large enterprise like the Army, the question will be how data can enable the Army to accomplish its various mission sets of deploying, fighting, and winning our Nation’s wars. Culture change can occur in three ways: Top-down as a strategy, laterally, and bottom-up/ grassroots. Bottom-up makes up the most significant portion of successful culture change in a system. Organizations need to make sure the users are prepared, and the technology interfaces are adapted to the change being sought.

Shownotes(20:14) Manuj asks what is the value of a degree today… I think eventually it's the experience that counts. That's why I think the technology programs are more hands-on — it doesn't mean that you have to go in and do all the coding yourself. I mean, at Carnegie Mellon, I did some coding, but eventually, I was able to interest a very smart undergraduate student to implement most of my work. And I worked out much faster, and I had a much bigger thesis... So I think it depends on how it's done. But yeah, a good education can be extremely valuable. (29:39) Inderpal responds to AI taking over the human world… It's a tool to make things more accurate, faster, more efficient, etc. But it still has to provide even more powerful explanations and transparency than you would otherwise provide. In 2011, we had a program that won Jeopardy Watson — so from an algorithmic standpoint, we were at the top of the hill. But from an enterprise standpoint, what we realize is the algorithm isn't everything. AI programs can process all the unstructured data as well like video, audio, scene composition, etc. But now flip over to the people side, if there's somebody who's a decision maker, they have to be comfortable dealing with such a program.Inderpal is the Global Chief Data Officer at IBM and leads the company's data strategy to ensure IBM remains the number one AI and hybrid cloud provider for the enterprise. His expertise is in transforming data into corporate value and better customer experiences through strategic & innovative capabilities that leverage analytic insights to support growth and productivity. It's interesting that he worked at IBM as a Research Staff Member till 1997 and rejoined IBM in 2015 — bringing more than 20 years of leadership experience at leading companies such as Cambia Health Solutions and Express Scripts/Medco Health Solutions. Inderpal also served as Cambia Health Solutions' Senior Vice President and Chief Data Officer, where he drove the development of the company's data strategy. Cambia Health Solutions is headquartered in Portland, Oregon, working to create a person-focused and economically sustainable health care system. Cambia employs more than 4000 employees and reaches more than 70 million Americans nationwideBefore that, Inderpal was Vice President of Knowledge Solutions and Chief Data Officer at Express Scripts/Medco Health Solutions. Express Scripts employs more than 13,000 people and works to help 100 million people get, and stay, healthy.Inderpal's goal is to turn challenges into opportunities by solving the most complex problems with data, AI, and technology, all while strengthening IBM's trusted, enterprise-wide data and AI backbone. He was selected as the CDO Club's 2017 U.S. Chief Data Officer of the Year, and he has been quoted as an industry expert by the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, US News & World Report, CNN, and FOX.Support the show

This episode of Sunny Side Up highlights a pioneering Chief Data Officer who shares what the role means and why it has grown increasingly important within the enterprise. Inderpal Bhandari, named Chief Data Officer of the Year 2017 by the CDO Club, has moved through several roles at IBM, but none has been more transformational than his current C-suite presence as CDO. He and his teams have been empowered to accomplish in-house at IBM what companies of all sizes want most to see: Growth in the top line, expansion of the bottom line, and overall risk reduction. Data transformation, AI, and cybersecurity are the three main pillars for getting there. With his methodology, Inderpal has found ways not only to leverage data in myriad ways but also to create transformation within the IBM culture – that adoption piece without which, says Inderpal, there can be no meaningful or sustainable implementation. In 2016, I attended Sree’s Social Media Weekend #SMWKND in NYC. As a participant, I felt like I was guzzling water from a fire hydrant. Sree along with other powerful digital thought leaders were on fire. They were helping attendees uncover what was next and what should be ignored pertaining to social media and its otherwise overwhelming technologies. In a nutshell, I implemented several learnings from that memorable experience and was delighted when he agreed to be interviewed. Sree taught for 20-years at Columbia Journalism School. He also worked for the Metropolitan Museum of Art as well as the City of New York both as a Chief Digital Officer. He was named one of Fast Company's 100 Most Creative People in Business in 2015 as well as the world's most influential Chief Digital Officer by CDO Club in 2016. Today, Sree is back in the classroom at Stony Brook University in NY and has embraced the new era of consultancy work by co-founding Digitmentors a new kind of digital consultancy firm that operates worldwide. Meanwhile, you can find Sree every Sunday at 8:30 am ET for four years now, as the host of a #NYTReadalong, reading the print NYT out loud on FB Live. He often has guests from various fields, including occasional NYT reporters and editors. Tune in to hear Sree’s thoughts pertaining to: A memorable moment during Social Media Weekend 2016 when April Reign who created the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite (Twitter @ReignOfApril) shared her 2020 Oscars hopes and dreams. How he personally managed through what could have been the worst moment of his life when he was let go from the Metropolitan Museum of Art - (Twitter #3MetYears) Why marketers in particular need to be better at telling their story than anyone else and why your story is the most important story of all. How to avoid being overwhelmed with so much information when it comes to the world of social media A shift from “big sea” to “small sea” communications including thoughts on microcommunities. Why he translated his name into Mandarin on LinkedIn and how you can attract opportunities in other countries too. The “American Dream” especially when it comes to making sacrifices to live in the U.S. A formula anyone can apply to their own social media strategy. His beliefs on everyone having a story and what it may take to uncover yours. Listen to hear how Sree thinks about this question which is certainly top of mind for both traditional as well as digital native companies these days around the world. How can companies who currently have a mix of traditional experts, tradigitals, and native digitals create more opportunities where the best ideas can rise to the top and ultimately win the day? Lovely to speak with you again David, we had the pleasure of working together a couple of times. We went to Las Vegas with IBM, when I also learnt a lot about the future of big data and when Will Smith was speaking we did laugh... DavidI was on the floor right in front of him. It's great to be with you again, Nathaniel. We go way back. One of the things before we get into IBM I really appreciate what you did! One of the first times we worked together was in 2014. It was at the BBC and it was our first ever London CDO Summit. It was sponsored by Accenture Digital and I'll never forget it because you helped us to trend on Twitter. It was the first time we ever trended on Twitter and even ahead of the Mayor of London at the time so I appreciate all your work and hello to all your fans and followers out there very delighted to be on the show with you today! Yes we were both recently at the IBM think conference and I was a Watson influencer. I'm going to the San Francisco event coming up in February and Will Smith was certainly unbelievable. He was so powerful in his presentation and just came off really, really nicely and had some really great appropriate jokes as I recall to about data and all the digital people in the room. They always get great guests. Oh, it was absolutely phenomenal. I just couldn't stop laughing. NathanielHe just took the Mickey, in England we say take the Mickey out of people and and is the polite way to put it and he took the Mickey out of the guy from Titan watches, the guy was from from India and will said he needed a spokesperson and how he wanted the job and this kind of stuff you know and I think it was just really quite on point actually, he was just so on the ball with the influencer marketing trend that is happening right now.  There's so much that we could talk about and I'm sure we're going to talk some more on future shows. We were just briefly talking about in 10 years time what the world is actually going to look like and I learned so much from attending your your CDO Summits and it was absolutely incredible when I went to the first one, learning so much about the future of big data. It was just amazing and in fact, the second event that I attended I really learned a massive amount about the future of retail. Actually, this is bricks and mortar retail we're talking about and what I found was amazing, was actually what the New York government we're doing in New York with Data. I think that's just so interesting and the future of big data is so exciting. Say you want to have a business and wonder where is the best location for my new coffee shop, they actually analyse that data for you. Then they say, well, your best bet is to have a shop here on 23rd street because you've got the amount of traffi...
