In this week's episode, we learn about Meg Dryer, the General Manager of the Consumer Business for Evidation, a healthtech app offering health tracking, reward features, and access to research institutions. Meg is an individual who uniquely blends engineering and design, having started her journey in engineering before pursuing art and design. This shift towards experience design has lasted throughout her career, and you'll hear how profoundly it has impacted her work.Evidation leverages health data from wearables and smartphones to impact healthcare decisions, setting the stage for objective, data-informed discussions between patients and doctors. With Data Privacy Day on the horizon (January 28th!), Meg emphasizes the importance of data transparency in crafting a delightful consumer-grade healthcare experience.Meg offers valuable insights throughout the conversation. She advocates how she and her team have found success in designing for the 'off moments', allowing their users to disengage when they need to and re-engage easily on their own terms. She also emphasizes the importance of allowing users to switch their focus, whether it's from activity level to sleep patterns. These strategies maintain long-term engagement.Meg also shares advice for listeners who aim to improve their own practices. Intensive user involvement, maintaining a beginner's mindset, and practicing patience forms the crux of successful design. Meg insists on going beyond the present app scope and envisioning the future experience based on deep qualitative research, ensuring that the product is tailored to meet both the obvious and unspoken needs of the users.—Guest BioMeg Dryer is the General Manager of Consumer at Evidation, where she is responsible for Evidation's presence in the market. Prior to Evidation, Meg was VP of Consumer Experience at Cambia Health Solutions. Before moving into healthcare, Meg led teams at Nike where she worked on projects such as the Rio Olympics and at IDEO, where she did venture and business design. Her work is deeply human-centric: she cares deeply about understanding customer needs and crafting solutions and stories to meet these needs. Meg has a BS in Interaction Design from Stanford University and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.—Guest Quote"If you are trying to force someone in your app or your experience to maintain that high level of engagement, they drop off. But if you craft an experience designed for the off moments, where it's okay for it to take a back seat for a while, people can re-engage when they're ready. You keep that longitudinal engagement over time.” – Meg Dryer—Time Stamps *(01:22) Meg's Background*(05:40) What is Evidation?*(08:04) Capturing the data from your lived experience*(11:46) The sensitivity of health data*(13:27) Solving the tension between data privacy and design*(18:26) Evidation's superpower*(20:17) Redesigning the healthcare experience*(22:47) Lessons for others looking to redesign their app*(26:12) How to maintain user engagement all year long*(31:03) Rapid Fire Questions—LinksConnect with Meg Dryer on LinkedInCheck out EvidationConnect with Tom Butta on LinkedInCheck out the Airship Website

Shownotes(20:14) Manuj asks what is the value of a degree today… I think eventually it's the experience that counts. That's why I think the technology programs are more hands-on — it doesn't mean that you have to go in and do all the coding yourself. I mean, at Carnegie Mellon, I did some coding, but eventually, I was able to interest a very smart undergraduate student to implement most of my work. And I worked out much faster, and I had a much bigger thesis... So I think it depends on how it's done. But yeah, a good education can be extremely valuable. (29:39) Inderpal responds to AI taking over the human world… It's a tool to make things more accurate, faster, more efficient, etc. But it still has to provide even more powerful explanations and transparency than you would otherwise provide. In 2011, we had a program that won Jeopardy Watson — so from an algorithmic standpoint, we were at the top of the hill. But from an enterprise standpoint, what we realize is the algorithm isn't everything. AI programs can process all the unstructured data as well like video, audio, scene composition, etc. But now flip over to the people side, if there's somebody who's a decision maker, they have to be comfortable dealing with such a program.Inderpal is the Global Chief Data Officer at IBM and leads the company's data strategy to ensure IBM remains the number one AI and hybrid cloud provider for the enterprise. His expertise is in transforming data into corporate value and better customer experiences through strategic & innovative capabilities that leverage analytic insights to support growth and productivity. It's interesting that he worked at IBM as a Research Staff Member till 1997 and rejoined IBM in 2015 — bringing more than 20 years of leadership experience at leading companies such as Cambia Health Solutions and Express Scripts/Medco Health Solutions. Inderpal also served as Cambia Health Solutions' Senior Vice President and Chief Data Officer, where he drove the development of the company's data strategy. Cambia Health Solutions is headquartered in Portland, Oregon, working to create a person-focused and economically sustainable health care system. Cambia employs more than 4000 employees and reaches more than 70 million Americans nationwideBefore that, Inderpal was Vice President of Knowledge Solutions and Chief Data Officer at Express Scripts/Medco Health Solutions. Express Scripts employs more than 13,000 people and works to help 100 million people get, and stay, healthy.Inderpal's goal is to turn challenges into opportunities by solving the most complex problems with data, AI, and technology, all while strengthening IBM's trusted, enterprise-wide data and AI backbone. He was selected as the CDO Club's 2017 U.S. Chief Data Officer of the Year, and he has been quoted as an industry expert by the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, US News & World Report, CNN, and FOX.Support the show

When a child is seriously ill or injured, the entire family is affected. While the child requires medical attention and effective treatments, their family also needs to be supported with compassion and care. Families can find this support at Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC), which works to ease the burdens of everyday life so families can focus on being with their children. To expand the resources available to families, RMHC of the Intermountain Area has created a new family support program funded by the Cambia Health Foundation. This pioneering program includes a full-time staff person and provides crisis intervention, mental health support, grief and bereavement support, and collaborative case management to help address social determinants of health. This can include helping families at home after their stay by connecting them to community resources for job placement, food security, school, support groups and other services. RMHC is a longtime community partner of Cambia Health Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Cambia Health Solutions. The new family support program aligns with the Foundation's new strategic vision to advance equity through whole-person health in underserved communities. With this renewed focus on behavioral health and belief in building a just and inclusive health care system for all, the Foundation is amid a multi-year, $11.5 million community initiative to increase access, improve quality of care and reduce the stigma of mental health. OVERVIEW: Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast talks with Torben Nielsen, CEO of ZOOM+Care. Torben shares his key takeaways spanning his 20+ year business career and highlights opportunities within tech-based healthcare. He also provides an overview of ZOOM+Care and the company’s capabilities. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Torben’s postgraduate study on internet marketing strategies led him to a career with LEGO. He eventually transferred from Denmark to the US to work for Inovise Medical Inc., which digitizes EKG machines for the early detection of heart attacks. Torben also worked at XEROX, heading up a division to develop new segments for network color printers. Across his career, Torben has learned to challenge the current status and to challenge current business models. When developing products, observe how consumers are responding to your particular product. Iteration is key. Curiosity is also important, as well as perseverance. Test ideas early and often. Following XEROX, Torben worked at Cambia Health Solutions to improve the experiences of health insurance members utilizing an integrated provider directory. Currently, Torben is the CEO of ZOOM+Care, an on-demand healthcare platform that allows patients to schedule same-day appointments and have access to their medical data. ZOOM+Care offers telehealth and in-person visits with 60 clinics across four states. The company is focused on creating a seamless and frictionless experience for patients. There’s a ton of opportunities within healthcare for entrepreneurs to provide technology solutions. Torben’s advice is to enjoy what you’re doing. Work hard and be persistent. 3 KEY POINTS: Be curious about what other industries are doing and then apply best practices from those industries to what you’re trying to do. Test your prototypes and products early and often with customers for feedback. They’ll help inform what your product should look like and how to utilize it. Despite the challenges of COVID, technology has made it possible for people to access healthcare virtually. This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Jim Swayze is an executive with Cambia Health Solutions, which recently donated $7.1 million to improve mental health in rural Utah. He's here to tell us how this significant investment will help to address unmet needs. JIM SWAYZE Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Utah is one of Cambia's regional health plans. As an insurance company, we're concerned about the behavioral and mental health issues that have been greatly intensified by COVID-19. Rural communities where it can be difficult to get mental healthcare are especially impacted. This is why we invested $7.1 million to increase access where it's most needed. This funding will support the development or expansion of programs and services that will provide 24/7 support to people in crisis or emotional distress. It will also increase the capacity of established safety net programs to meet current and emerging needs. To make the greatest impact in rural areas, we have invested in community partners with differing behavioral and mental health services. With our financial support, these organizations will advance important programs to help Utahns this year and into the future: • Association for Utah Community Health • National Children's Alliance (NCA): Utah's Children Justice Centers • National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) - Utah • University of Utah Huntsman Mental Health Institute • Utah Office of Multicultural Affairs DEREK MILLER That significant investment will make a real difference in people's lives. HLTH Matters EP02Integrated Care Built Around the Human Being—featuring Mark Ganz of Cambia Health SolutionsIn every other area of our lives, service providers are accountable to their customers. If they fail to provide both quality and value, people vote with their feet. But in healthcare, we’ve traded away that control to the insurance company, and the result is an increasingly dehumanizing system that looks at people as vessels of disease to be fixed rather than people in need of healing. How can we bring that critical patient-caregiver relationship back and design an integrated approach to care that builds around the human being?Mark Ganz is the CEO of Cambia Health Solutions, a family of companies working to create a person-focused and economically-sustainable healthcare system. Cambia’s health plans, innovative technology and strategic investments deliver consumer-centric solutions that make care more affordable and accessible. Mark has dedicated his career to designing a seamless, end-to-end healthcare experience around the needs of people and their families, and he was named 2014 Healthcare CEO of the Year by Portland Business Journal. On this episode of HLTH Matters, Mark joins Dr. Gulati to explain how his father (a physician himself) was treated by the healthcare system at the end of his life and how that inspires Cambia’s human-first approach. He describes how we lost the humanity in healthcare, weighing in on how technology and the economic model have severed the relationship between the patient and caregiver. Listen in for Mark’s insight on pricing technology to the market, not the insurance payment model, and learn how Cambia is taking an integrated approach to care that centers on the human experience.Topics CoveredHow Mark’s dad was a family doctor in the full sense of the word How Mark’s dad was treated by the system at the end of his lifeCambia’s commitment to start with a deep respect for familiesPhysicians as administers of technology vs. healers of peopleThe dehumanizing impact of the economic model in healthcare How we traded away control to insurance companies for convenience Cambia’s work around palliative care as part of an integrated approachPricing tech to the market rather than the insurance payment modelHow Mark is inspired by the Porter & Teisberg article in HBRConnect with Mark GanzCambia Health SolutionsMark on LinkedIn Connect with Dr. Gulati, Dr. Shlain & Dr. KukuHLTH ConferenceDr. Gulati’s WebsiteDr. Gulati on LinkedInDr. Gulati on TwitterDr. Shlain on LinkedInDr. Shlain on TwitterDr. Kuku on LinkedInDr. Kuku on Twitter ResourcesHealthSparqEcho Health VenturesGNS HealthcareRedefining Healthcare: Creating Value-Based Competition on Results by Michael E. There's a shift happening in many industries toward placing a greater focus on the consumer, but what if you're not sure who those consumers are and what they want or expect? That's where human-centered design comes in. It's an approach where businesses research consumer habits, expectations and experiences, and then use what they learned to improve their services and improve the way they interact with those consumers. In this edition of HealthChangers, we'll be taking a look at one example of how human-centered design is playing out in health care. My guest is Nancy Vuckovic from Cambia Health Solutions. She shares consumer research and human-centered design principles and how they can change the way people experience health care.

Whenever you get a checkup, or go to the ER, there's a doctor or a nurse on hand, typing notes about your health into a computer. They are often recording things like your weight, blood pressure and other measurements. These notes can also include important instructions about medications, and the doctor's impressions of your health condition. There's a growing movement among hospitals and doctors to make these notes easier to access. That movement is called OpenNotes, an organization that aims to make notes more readily available to patients and their caregivers. The hope is that patients can take a more active role in their own health care. To find out more about OpenNotes, we spoke with Dr. Joann Elmore a professor of medicine at the University of Washington, and a physician at Harborview Medical Center, one of the first medical centers to adopt OpenNotes.
