Sometimes, being in the wrong place at the wrong time can have deadly consequences. Sometimes, it's not just the place that's the problem; it's the who that you're with. In the two cases we discuss in this episode, neither of these men intended to kill their victims. They did not set out that morning to take the life of another human being. Nor did they gain anything from the demise of their victims. But they were responsible for their deaths all the same. The first case is in London, England, where twenty-four-year-old Charlotte "Charli" Brown from Essex had been looking for love on Tinder for some time but had had no luck. She wasn't interested in having a good time; she was looking for a long-term relationship. Before long, she began talking to a thirty-year-old web designer named Jack Shepherd. On December 8th, 2015, a Tuesday night, Jack took Charlotte to a restaurant on the 32nd floor and wined and dined her. Everything was going well until Charlotte was killed in an accident involving Jack Shepherd's speedboat. The second case is a request from Jenn K on behalf of her mother. Thirty-one years ago, on August 30th, 1993, the body of a 33-year-old Nancy Lynn Manni was found floating in the Chesapeake Bay just 250 yards from the Cove Point Lighthouse in Cove Point, Maryland. Nancy had lacerations on the back of her legs and buttocks, which were most likely made from a propeller. The coroner felt that Nancy had been alive and trying to swim away when she was run over by a boat. It would take years and being featured on Unsolved Mysteries to discover who was responsible for Nancy's death.Join Cam and Jen as we discuss 'The Speedboat Killers: The Deaths of Charlotte Brown & Nancy Manni.'Seeker's Notes sponsored this week's episode.Whenever you need a break from your day, you need to try Seeker's notes. This week on Yes But Why, I chatted with improviser and theater techperson, Charlotte Brown. Charlotte Brown (they/them) is a Chicago-based multipotentialite that enjoys many creative endeavors such as improv, filmmaking, photography, and teching virtual improvised shows! Charlotte got their start during the pandemic doing tech for online improv shows through the Hideout Theater in Austin, Texas (you know the one). Charlotte has enjoyed virtual theater because they have gotten to learn and collaborate with people from all over the world. (Shoutout to Kenzie and Braden). One of Charlotte's favorite credits includes doing tech for The Assembly Mexico's, The Walking Sketch show, which was performed entirely in Spanish. Charlotte is not remotely fluent in Spanish but they did an excellent job with the show. Other credits include technical direction for The World's Greatest Improv School (WGIS) and sound design for the B. Iden Payne award-winning online original musical, “Human Resources the Musical.” Charlotte recently moved from Florida to Chicago to pursue their MFA in Comedic Screenwriting from DePaul University in 2021. They are currently stage managing (in real life) at CSz Chicago and The Second City Training Center. Charlotte is also the admin of the Facebook group Tech Alliance of Distributed Artists (TADA!) which is geared towards fostering collaboration and sharing best practices for both not only zoomprov but virtual theater. When we first started our conversation, Charlotte mentioned to me how they are anxious and shy and how that created some tough barriers to creativity. But I challenged that theory - Charlotte must not as shy as they used to be, as they are a loud and proud fixture in the online improv communities. In fact, Charlotte was so bubbly and full of stories during our chat that I was as delighted to be with them via Zoom as I have been chatting with them on Facebook groups for the past few years. Charlotte mused about their love for classic video games like Oregon Trail and Putt Putt Goes to the Moon. They told me about working at Universal Orlando and the beginnings of the path to improv. Charlotte talked about how they read ALL of the improv books before actually dipping a toe in the water and the ups and downs of that decision. Charlotte shared how happenstance got them into teching for online improv shows and how much they are totally in love with it now. We discussed Charlotte's recent move to Chicago and all the goals they are working on presently. Support Charlotte Brown by following them on Instagram (@charlottebreanne19). That is how you can keep up with their creative shenanigans! Yes But Why Podcast is a proud member of the HC Universal Network family of podcasts. Charlotte Brown is the kind of person we need in the construction and plant sector, and we need to support people like her, especially when others abuse them in the industry on social media. In this podcast, host, Peter Haddock talks to Charlotte about why she enjoys working in the industry and how she is supporting the growth of Liugong Direct by actively promoting the brand on social media. One of those posts that she put together involved the picture accompanying this post as we promote it on social media, which led to some disgusting, abusive, sexist and upsetting comments. Charlotte brings positivity to the industry, and we want to support it and keep her and her other female colleagues pictured in the image in the plant sector. We hope you enjoy listening to Charlotte and will support her and other women in the industry in the future by sharing this podcast. Charlotte Brown was a young woman who married Capt. Nelson Cole Haley, skipper of the whaling ship Charles W. Morgan out of Mystic, CT. No doubt about that. But there is a rumor that before she married Capt. Haley, she was ditched at the altar by another man who then heaved ho aboard a whaling ship; and because of that, she disguised herself as a man and signed up as a whaler herself. Because the story is undocumented, that makes it a folktale, and therefore fair game for us to have some fun with. If the yarn is true, then Charlotte joins the ranks of several women who are known to have passed themselves off as sailors -- including some who were pirates. We heard about Charlotte Brown Haley when we visited Mystic Seaport in Connecticut, where the Charles W. Morgan is anchored. The 105 ft. whaling vessel, built in 1841 in New Bedford, MA., still looks pretty much the same as it did when it hunted down whales and chopped them up in the blubber room. (Yuck!) You can step aboard her (If they called ships her, why didn't they let "hers" work on them too?) and see where the first mate had his own tiny berth, the second and third mates had to share one, and the rest of the crew were sardined in the forecastle. And you also can see photographs of the ship's various captains -- including Haley and his wife Charlotte.Mystic Seaport has a number of exhibits related to ships and whaling, including a small craft display and an impressive collection of figureheads. And there are a number of activities especially suitable for younger kids, such as rope making. A troupe of three performers also presents the story of Charlotte Brown Haley at various times throughout the day.Our version of the story is performed with two guest stars who are friends of Zephyr's: Cassia (who also assisted us two weeks ago) and Daniel, the drummer in Zephyr's band who has a mean falsetto.Happy Listening!Dennis (Captain), Kimberly (Narrator), Zephyr (Jack), Cassia (Mom) and Daniel (Charlotte)
