Send us a text"Improvisers don't have time to hypothesise about the future of an idea. If you bring me an idea or a brick, I can't consider if it's viable for the rest of the show; I just have to trust that it is and know the process will land us somewhere interesting. In businesses, leaders often assess the future of an idea instantly and may deny it, rather than just saying, 'Yes, and let's build on this idea.' The improviser remembers the past, honours the present, and cares not for the future." - Broni Lisle This week's themeBroni Lisle, a seasoned improv performer with decades of experience, shares how the art of improvisation can radically reshape the way teams communicate, collaborate, and innovate. If you haven't had a chance to listen to our Season 1 Episode 8 with Mike, covering record stores, free jazz, his radio show Destination Out, or his long time ensemble, Northwoods Improvisers, please start there. Then head right back here. After all, that was the first episode of the MMHP that catapulted us around the world with our Michigan Music History outlook and exposure. Mike alone was the first podcast we had that skyrocketed the listener number and remains in the top few to this day. We feel this episode just may eclipse that. The long time listeners to WCMU know his voice. A Professor at CMU in music, as well as world renown bassist in the Northwoods Imporvisers, Johnston is a jazz writer, free music enthusiast, and a collector of all things organic and jazzy, from rock to world music and back. In this podcast, he gives background on the Improvisers 2023 release Fanfares, as well as gets to fill the gaps between his time early as a DJ, music with Faruq Z. Bey, and where the mighty new version of Northwoods is heading with the amazing saxophone front of Donovan Boxy and Dominic Bierenga, with the dual bass addition of Jack O'Brien (along with Johnston), violin from record label head Mike Khoury (Entropy Stereo) and Johnston's long time partner, drummer Nick Ashton. Johnston also hangs around post-podcast for another 20 minutes of chat, discovery and story sharing, so please hang in there for the full show... Destination OUT of the ballpark with this episode!

This week we welcome friend of the show Mark Turpin back to the show and he and Iain discuss the topic ‘Comedy Influences'. It's a fascinating walk down memory lane for those that know the references and it's a real treasure trove of comedy gold for those of you that don't know the references to go away and look up online. Improv doesn't need to be funny, but when it is the comedy comes from a lifetime of influences. So sit back, relax and hear Mark and Iain break down all things comedy influences.

Frank Murphy's friend Erik Dobell is co-hosting today's episode. Erik is a mentalist. His show, Impossibilities - Magic, Mind-Reading, and Mayhem! is in the Iris Theater at the Gatlinburg Space Needle. Get tickets at https://www.impossibilitiesshow.com Erik has a friend who pays to subscribe to pizza-making videos online. Frank prefers to watch Adam Ragusea for free on YouTube. Frank's interview with Adam Ragusea will air on East Tennessee PBS on Tuesday night (actually Wednesday, July 27) at midnight. Erik has a Carl Sagan pin on his jacket. Many people cannot recognize Sagan. Eric also has a pin for members of the International Brotherhood of Magicians. Erik is wearing a t-shirt that Frank bought for the movie Fish Bait. Frank was wearing the shirt when his character was eaten by a giant catfish. Members of Einstein Simplified starred in Fish Bait as the fishing buddies who end up at Fear Hollow Marina. They improvised their lines. The movie is available free with ads on Tubi. https://tubitv.com/movies/638830/fish-bait In an episode of The Office, Michael Scott takes an improv class but does all the things improvisers are trained not to do. In real life, Steve Carell is an excellent improviser. There are some improv games designed to break one of the improv rules such as the game “Questions Only.” The Secret City Improv Festival has a head-to-head tournament called the Slayden Cup, named after Bill Slayden, a founding member of Einstein Simplified. This year's festival will be September 30 and October 1, 2022. Erik wonders why he got an empty folder for his high school diploma. Frank says that's normal. Most schools hold back the actual diplomas until after the ceremony to make sure everyone has met all requirements. Erik wonders if his daughter will be interested in sports. Frank mentions that ballet is as intense as a sport. Frank played the old man in several Oak Ridge Civic Ballet Association performances. When Frank passed the age at which his father died, his sister texted, “Congratulations. You win at breathing.” Frank's next goals are to outlive his paternal grandfather, his uncle, and his maternal grandfather. Frank likes to say that he wants to be buried so that he is exhumable. Erik is from Elmira, New York. He met his wife when living in North Carolina. They moved to Gatlinburg because of his show. He is a mentalist. Mentalism is a branch of magic that involves mind-reading. The magicians who do elaborate stage shows are generally called illusionists. Erik once worked as a mime. Frank agrees that pantomiming is difficult. Improvisers try to do realistic pantomime when holding imaginary objects. The tv show Police Squad had hilarious ending scenes in which the actors would freeze but something in the scene kept moving. For example Leslie Nielsen was pouring coffee when the scene froze and the coffee cup overflowed. Frank loves the Police Squad theme. Erik likes ‘80s cartoon themes. Frank used to watch reruns of The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends. Erik jokes that poor Rocky had a sad end. Frank appeared in parody videos for MoonPie. He played a character named Chandler Skootch who was afraid space aliens would invade Earth to get more MoonPies. This week on Yes But Why, I chatted with improviser and theater techperson, Charlotte Brown. Charlotte Brown (they/them) is a Chicago-based multipotentialite that enjoys many creative endeavors such as improv, filmmaking, photography, and teching virtual improvised shows! Charlotte got their start during the pandemic doing tech for online improv shows through the Hideout Theater in Austin, Texas (you know the one). Charlotte has enjoyed virtual theater because they have gotten to learn and collaborate with people from all over the world. (Shoutout to Kenzie and Braden). One of Charlotte's favorite credits includes doing tech for The Assembly Mexico's, The Walking Sketch show, which was performed entirely in Spanish. Charlotte is not remotely fluent in Spanish but they did an excellent job with the show. Other credits include technical direction for The World's Greatest Improv School (WGIS) and sound design for the B. Iden Payne award-winning online original musical, “Human Resources the Musical.”Charlotte recently moved from Florida to Chicago to pursue their MFA in Comedic Screenwriting from DePaul University in 2021. They are currently stage managing (in real life) at CSz Chicago and The Second City Training Center. Charlotte is also the admin of the Facebook group Tech Alliance of Distributed Artists (TADA!) which is geared towards fostering collaboration and sharing best practices for both not only zoomprov but virtual theater. When we first started our conversation, Charlotte mentioned to me how they are anxious and shy and how that created some tough barriers to creativity. But I challenged that theory - Charlotte must not as shy as they used to be, as they are a loud and proud fixture in the online improv communities. In fact, Charlotte was so bubbly and full of stories during our chat that I was as delighted to be with them via Zoom as I have been chatting with them on Facebook groups for the past few years. Charlotte mused about their love for classic video games like Oregon Trail and Putt Putt Goes to the Moon. They told me about working at Universal Orlando and the beginnings of the path to improv. Charlotte talked about how they read ALL of the improv books before actually dipping a toe in the water and the ups and downs of that decision. Charlotte shared how happenstance got them into teching for online improv shows and how much they are totally in love with it now. We discussed Charlotte's recent move to Chicago and all the goals they are working on presently. Support Charlotte Brown by following them on Instagram (@charlottebreanne19). Iden Payne award-winning online original musical, “Human Resources the Musical.” Charlotte recently moved from Florida to Chicago to pursue their MFA in Comedic Screenwriting from DePaul University in 2021. That is how you can keep up with their creative shenanigans! Yes But Why Podcast is a proud member of the HC Universal Network family of podcasts. This week we welcome that fantastic human being that is Stuart Moses to the show. Stuart is an associate teacher of LCI and has a workshop called 'Movement for Improvisers' taking place on March 26th at the Liverpool Arts Bar from 1-4pm. The workshop is aimed at shaking you out of your characterisation defaults and go to's that you might want to get out of. Tickets for the workshop are available on the Liverpool Comedy Improv website. During the chat you can hear all about Stuart's improv history and how it all started with table top role play gaming. Hear how he developed as a performar and teacher and how and why he started the Improv London Podcast back in 2015. A podcast that we highly recommed you listen to (after this one of course). We know you are going to love Stuart's true story of making stuff up.

Hello introverted improvisers! This online and audio space is great for improvisers who need a recharge, or are having difficulty finding an improv community in their current situation (especially due to the "social investment" it requires!). Plus, if you've never tried audio, it's a whole new dreamscape for vivid imaginations.
An improv troupe from Chicago mistakenly join a bloodthirsty cult, under the impression they're actually in an intense comedy workshop. An original audio comedy starring Andrew Hollinger, Julia Sismour, Chris Holtkamp, Patrick Monaghan, Ron Stacker Thompson and Bob Gosse.

It was a proud moment for the Major Scale to have the chance to speak with Karl Berger. Active since the 1960s, Berger has forged a career as a composer and vibist with an ear for talent, arranging, and bringing a sense of melody and groove to the avant-garde. Taking a cue from his first encounter with Don Cherry, jazz's legendary gypsy traveller and inventor of World Beat. Berger has recorded under his own leadership with luminaries like Carla Bley, Ornette Coleman, and Lee Konitz – as well being tapped to enrich the music of Jeff Buckley, Natalie Merchant, and even Britney Spears! The Da Capo Trio are an unsigned group with an amazing and fresh take on one of the basics: the jazz trio. Drums, bass, and the Fender Rhodes piano sound get a 21st century treatment with dazzling virtuosity and accessibility. With their set of originals, standards (Oleo), and surprising arrangements (Pat Matheny), classic jazz jargon says it best here with the Da Capo Trio "so far out, that they're in." SONG CREDITS FOR THIS EPISODE: THEME: Jazz Phantom by Chomsk' (from the album "Different Beats" on Magentic Records). FIRST HALF: Symphony for Improvisers (Excerpt) by Don Cherry (from the album "Symphony for Improvisers" on Blue Note Records) Excerpt from UCF workshop by Karl Berger Movement 5 by Karl Berger (from the album "Gently Unfamiliar" on Tzadik records). The Major Scale can boast amongst it's guests- legends like Herbie Hancock, Tom Scott, and Ahmad Jamal. The up and coming and the underrated-Kamasi Washington, Mia Doi Todd, Michael Blake.
