No musician is more closely associated with London or left more footprints than Bowie, and you can trace its influence on his life and work (and vice versa) through a series of landmarks from the suburbs to the centre. Author and curator Paul Gorman has just published an annotated street-map – David Bowie's London - listing the places that played a formative role in his world and music, the places he rehearsed, performed, filmed and recorded, the homes of friends and managers, his schools and the addresses where he lived, worked and was photographed, made connections, bought clothes and generally raised the temperature. We talk here about many of those old haunts and the stories attached to them, which include… … mysterious manager Ralph Horton who got him to change his name to Bowie and then vanished from the face of the earth. … the fate of Heddon Street, home of K-West and the Ziggy phone-box. … Marc Bolan refusing to let him sing at an all-night benefit at Middle Earth. … “the Fairy Godmother of the New Romantics” at the WAG Club. … when Lionel Bart came to Haddon Hall. … Bowie and Steve Marriott auditioning for the Lower Third. … how he levered his way into a Fabulous magazine fashion shoot. … “the end of the age of Showbiz”: performing Chim Chim Cher-ee at the Marquee when at a crossroads between rock and roll and cabaret. … the magical piano at the Trident Studios. … a chance encounter with the otherworldly Vince Taylor whose ‘UFO map' helped inspire the concept of Ziggy Stardust. … the legend of Mr Fish, creator of the man-dress on the cover of The Man Who Sold The World. … the days when people had a white Rolls Royce and matching Alsatian – and “the Great Sarong Scare of the ‘90s”. … and various fringe figures including his art teacher Owen Frampton, Konrads agents Bob Knight and Eric Easton, muse and heartbreaker Hermione Farthingale, producers Shel Talmy and Tony Hatch (“the original Mr Nasty from Opportunity Knocks”) and slum landlord and racketeer Peter Rackman. In this episode, we look behind the romanticized glow-up of the iconic Victorian child chimney sweep. We'll wonder:what can we learn about a culture by examining a mundane occupation?what were the structures that put this practice in place?what would a typical day in the life of a young sweep be like? And most importantly:how can a bad practice become undone? andhow can you persuade a public who benefits from a bad practice that it needs to stop? This is our YLT opportunity to give a voice to some children who never had one in their lifetime, and to shine a spotlight on some of the advocates, patrons, and reformers who followed their consciences on behalf of the vulnerable. 1.What are you Doing the Rest of Your Life 2.Feelings 3.Chim Chim Cher-ee(電影「歡樂滿人間」主題曲) 4.My Funny Valentine 5.Besame Mucho 6.Blue Sky 7.思いはあるのに(西村由紀江) 8.A Song For You 9.If 10.All By Myself 11.I Dreamed a Dream(音樂劇《悲慘世界》插曲)

***This 1964/65 Best Original Song Category is Spoiler Free*** Unless the trailers have spoilers in them, then we may give you that same information. “Chim Chim Cher-ee” from Mary Poppins Performed by Dick Van Dyke & Julie Andrews - 2:55 “Dear Heart” from Dear Heart Performed by Andy Williams - 9:40 “Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte” from Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte Performed by Patty Page - 15:55 “My Kind of Town” from Robin and the 7 Hoods Performed by Frank Sinatra - 22:06 “Where Love Has Gone” from Where Love Has Gone Performed by Jack Jones - 27:09 Re-Rank / AKA Perfecting Perfection - 33:05 SOCIAL MEDIA AND LEAVE AN iTUNES COMMENT FOR US TO READ ON AIR - 35:22 Also Mike has admitted to watching Mary Poppins on loop as a young child, we’ve already reviewed Mike 1’s childhood favorite in Cinderella (halfisode 4), and you now have TMI (too much information) on both your hosts. Though we often heckle in these Best Original Song Halisodes, we’re surprisingly positive about all five of these songs. They’re kind of undeniably good, we guess. Let us know what you think on social media. We’re Mike, Mike, and Oscar on Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, and Gmail. We’re at MMandOscar on Twitter. There’s Andy Williams, Jack Jones, Bettie Davis, Dick Van Dyke, Julie Andrews, and Frank Sinatra. Each has quite the distinct sounding set of pipes. So the iconic voices, the big names, and some great songs do not allow these two old men from the muppet show to heckle this one from our balcony here much. The scenes some of these songs play through on the other hand, abundant grounds for heckling. We re-rank the songs, and there’s some differences in opinion for good and bad reasons. Don’t miss how we re-litigate the category. Do also check out our other halfisodes where we review Best Original Songs from Celine Dion, Frozen, Dirty Dancing, Nat King Cole, Aladdin, Stevie Wonder, and Flashdance. Our podcast showcases a whole bunch more retrospectives on Oscar’s past. We’ve recently posted episodes on the 1991 Best Actress featured The Silence of the Lambs’ Jodie Foster and Thelma & Louise with part 2 on Laura Dern and Bette Midler. Before that we released a Best Original Screenplay from 1989 featured Dead Poets Society, Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing, and When Harry Met Sally. Other retrospectives live in the early part of our back catalog if you enjoy how we mine Oscar history here. We’ve also covered all the big hits recently released in theaters including Avengers: Infinity War, Deadpool 2, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and The Incredibles 2. Our Hereditary reviews break some new ground as we theorize about what that movie did and meant, and what it means for the upcoming Oscar races. We put an Oscar Lens on all these movies, and we’ve also previewed the heck out of all the releases of the year to date. We’re a year round movie podcast, having fun with the Oscars off-season that may be winding down sooner than we think as July and August showcase a bunch more early contenders. Do check out our latest preview in ep 79. Plan your next movie night with us. When reality sucks, keep watching those movies with us. We’re Mike, Mike, and Oscar!
From a family full of fisherman comes our next guest, Tiago Serrão. His rapid rise from Bar-back to Bar Manager shows an innate knack for, not only conceiving creative cocktails, but also, chatting up the customers. Galvin at Windows at first sight. Located on the 28th Floor of the Hilton Park Lane, it’s not hard to see why. The views over London are staggering - from wherever you sit, you could swear you hear the subtle strains of Chim Chim Cher-ee (from “Mary Poppins”). Galvin at Windows is not only the perfect date place, but also a Michelin starred restaurant and home to the Galvin Cup - one of the most prestigious mixology awards in London. Although still quite young, Tiago has climbed the 28 floors with ease, after working several years in a series of luxury hotels in his home country, Portugal, and the famous Ritz’s Rivoli Bar on Piccadilly. As Bar Manager of Galvin at Windows, he has created one of the most romantic menus in London, which you can hear all about on the podcast. Watch Tiago make his take on the Vieux Carre on our Youtube Channel Next time, we meet Vincenzo Sibilia, the man who made a tiny spot in Chelsea the place to be.
