Somewhere beyond the barricade, is there a world you long to see? There's no more overtly theological (or more popular) musical than Claude-Michel Schönberg & Alain Boubil's 1980 Les Misérables, based on Victor Hugo's 1862 novel. From Valjean and Javert to Eponine and Fantine, this musical crams more pathos, prayer, and bad wigs into three hours than any other musical we know. Do you hear the people sing? _________________________________________ We talk about: Prologue (the Bishop) / Stars / Javert's Suicide – Javert, the police inspector, embodies a law-and-order version of the Christian gospel (shout-out to our Jansenist followers!) – and ultimately, the mercy he is shown destroys him. Are these competing atonement theories, or is there more subtlety in Les Mis' treatment of the Christian gospel and its consequences? I Dreamed a Dream / On My Own / A Little Fall of Rain – Fantine gets one, brief, shining moment before she dies (it's a weeper), and Eponine stands in for every alto who dreams of being the soprano – and then she dies, too. Why do most of the women in Les Mis end up dead? Turning, Turning – "What's the use of praying if there's nobody who hears it?" In a musical where women are mostly prostitutes or virgins, the women's chorus gives voice to one of the show's darkest and most provocative theological questions. Bring Him Home / Do You Hear the People Sing? – What does an evangelized life look like on the ground – and what does “somewhere beyond the barricade” really mean? _________________________________________ You'll hear Colm Wilkinson, Phillip Quast, Lea Salonga, Michael Ball and Judy Kuhn from the 1995 “Dream Cast Recording.” You'll also hear Anne Hathaway sing “I Dreamed a Dream” from the 2012 film soundtrack because she won an Oscar for it, and attention must be paid. _________________________________________ Never miss an episode! V 1.

The first time was revelatory. The first time you watched Mad Men. Or The Godfather. Or cracked open Marcus Aurelius' Meditations. Or heard Tom Petty's Free Fallin' or listened to Fantine sing, I Dreamed a Dream from Les Mis. Or stood in front of a Caravaggio painting. It hit you with all the power that new and brilliant art has. It shook you. It opened up something in you. It taught you something. But in some way, the power of these moments is actually overrated or at least overstated. It's powerful because it's new and immediate. But what's actually more transformative is what happens when you return to those works of art, lingering as Seneca said, on the words of the master thinkers.---And in today's Daily Stoic Journal excerpt reading, Ryan discusses how the practice of treating the luxurious things that we yearn for with contempt through thoughtful and intentional language serves to remind us of what really matters in life.

Doorways between worlds open each night, allowing entrance into unmarked territories of spirit. Through these successions of images during sleep, we become explorers of the outer edges of awareness, seeking knowledge beyond the physical reality that we know so well.In Season 1, Episode 21, we cover half of Chapter 10, I Dreamed a Dream. We never stop learning, even when we sleep. Host Donna Rebadow & Candice discuss classes during sleep. Many of us attend the Sleepers' Class while others graduate into the Dream Seed class. Let's step beyond our human limitations to connect with a vaster consciousness that is always in union with our greater selves, our Creator, our spirit. Contained within a sometimes-jumbled collection of fragmented moments are ever-present answers that simply wait for us to comprehend. You can find this episode on YouTube at this link: https://youtu.be/gegT1J7iy8M. Our first ever live show was recorded on 4th September 2022 as part of the Folk at the Folk Festival. Les Misérables is an epic, sweeping musical. It was one of the longest running shows on Broadway, a beloved community theatre production, and if you've ever seen the inside of an audition room, you've probably heard a gaggle of girls butchering On My Own or I Dreamed a Dream. It is a sung-through operatic style musical, so for this movie to have been a success all Tom Hooper needed was a cast that could sing. Instead, we got awkward close up of actors who can kind of hold a tune. The casting of this movie, save for Samantha Barks, Aaron Tveit and Anne Hathaway, was probably the most egregious error made, and all others that followed were made worse by Hugh Jackman screaming the score at us. Judy Talelski Inspired by lyrics to “I Dreamed of Rain” by Jan Garrett: The Spirit indwelling inspires me with dreams of freedom. “I dreamed of rain and the rains came, soft and easy, sweet and clear….” and peace spread over the land.” Every soul dreams of freedom and deserves to be free from bondage. “I dreamed of summer, and the winds changed and peace spread over the land.” I dreamed of freedom and I know the Truth sets me free from all limitation. “I dreamed of freedom and the moon rose, and the way was easy and the path was clear.” I am a child of God, born to be free. “And the flowers bloom in the desert, and the air is fresh and clear. Si sviluppò in seguito a New York e Brodway. Ascolteremo: All, I ask of you (Il fantasma dell'opera), Good morning starshine (Hair), Everything's Alright (Jesus Christ Superstar), One (Chorus Line), Electricity (Billie Elliot), Gimme Gimme Gimme (Mamma Mia), Maria (West Side Story), Memory (Cats), I Dreamed a Dream (I Miserabili), Never Enough (The Greatest Showman), Fame (Fame), Singin' in the Rain (Cantando sotto la pioggia). Buon ascolto da Lorella Turchetto Michieli. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/radio-nostra/support
It was only three months after opening the new production of Les Miserables at the refurbished Sondheim Theatre that the show closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, after 2 years since the production opened, Josefina Gabrielle is back on the West End stage playing Madame Thénardier. With the West End now fully lit up, Josefina took some time to talk to us about the new production of the iconic show and what it has been like portraying the deliciously wicked character. She tells us very eloquently on the universality of the show and why the the message still resonates so strongly with audiences today. Indeed, Les Miserables first arrived on the London scene in 1985 and yet audiences are still returning to the show today. With rousing numbers like One Day More, Master of the House and I Dreamed a Dream, Josefina tells us about how comforting it has also been to work on such a hopeful show during what has been a very dark time for many people. For nearly 30 years, Josefina Gabrielle has dazzled audiences across the country and even on Broadway. A three-time Olivier award nominee, Josefina has cemented herself in the industry as one of the West End's finest leading ladies, taking on roles in both high profile musicals like the National Theatre's Oklahoma! opposite Hugh Jackman as well as taking on dramatic roles like in Tonight at 8:30, a collection of Noël Coward plays at Chichester. She also remains one of few actresses to have played both Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart in Chicago. Today, Josefina Gabrielle remains humble as ever, happy looking back at many career highlights. She tells us she hopes to carry on working within the industry and we look forward to her creating and re-creating more brilliant work in the future.Les Miserables is running at the Sondheim Theatre in London and you can book tickets now!

Scripture: Mark 4:35-41 Daniel Crowe provided this Sunday’s message. Making decisions can be difficult and involves a certain amount of risk. Things don’t always turn out the way we want them to. After calming the seas during a terrible storm, Jesus asked the disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you have no faith?” Daniel weaves in the well-known song sung by Fantine in Les Miserables, “I Dreamed a Dream.” Even when things do not turn out okay, there is a sense in which they do. That’s part of having faith, even in the midst of fear.

Have you ever faced dreams that could not be? Maybe you have felt like you could relate to Fantine in Les Miserables who sings "I Dreamed a Dream" as you confronted the dreams that would never happen, or ended sooner than expected, or still haven't happened yet. Maybe it's hopes for marriage, or an eternal family. Maybe it's hopes and dreams that are beyond your control, or that were interrupted by health, finances, and reality. Let's delve into a new focus that can spark the motivation and hope for new dreams, and goals that are within your reach.

I Dreamed in E flat major - by Pianovelist Edit Olga Paraíso Una brisa de verano agradable. My guest is the award-winning musical theatre director, Laurence Connor. In this special three-episode series, Laurence talks to me about his career – and the blockbuster productions he has directed all over the world for Cameron Mackintosh and Andrew Lloyd Webber. These include: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Chess, Miss Saigon, Les Misérables, School of Rock, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Phantom of the Opera, Oliver! and The King and I. He is also the director of the new Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, Cinderella.I wanted to find out how he got to where he is today, what it takes to create a critically acclaimed West End production - and the big question musical theatre actors everywhere want to know... how you get a part in one of his shows! In this second episode Laurence talks to me about:When he told Cameron Mackintosh he thought The Phantom of the Opera was 'a bit stale'.How Cameron and he audition actors - and why Cameron sometimes 'saves you from yourself'.Why casting ensembles for shows is hard. Why he wishes every young actor could see what it's like being on the other side of the casting table. What he looks for when casting young performers - and his top tips for getting a part in one of his shows. The importance of just being yourself in auditions.Where the inspiration for his Jesus Christ Superstar arena tour production came from. The incredible story of how they found the actor who played Dewey Finn in the original School of Rock production.Look out for episode three - when Laurence talks about his AMAZING challenge and prize. Smear some vaseline on your teeth and set phasers to stunning because this week we watched season 1, episode 12 “Beauty Contest” (Original airdate May 12th, 1998. Written by Dana Baratta, directed by Arvin Brown). The judges give this episode high marks for coachalingus and 90’s extras but had to deduct a lot of points for character assassination and the end of music as we know it. Our Work at Home Life with Jason and Jami: Online Business | Blogging | Working from Home
Welcome to our brand new podcast: Our Work at Home Life with Jason & Jami. Each week we are going to bring you these mini-training sessions with practical hands on resources for growing your own blog or online business! This podcast has been a LONG time coming, and Jason and I are both so excited to kick it off. Today we are going to be sharing a little bit about our story, how we came to work from home full time, and how we make our money. If you are curious about how it's possible to work from home full time running an online business (and how you can do it too!), then this episode is for you. Then make sure to head back for our next episode. We are going to be jumping straight into our training sessions when we chat about how to launch your very own digital product. Our Story I started my very first blog back in 2009. I fell in love with blogging and then in 2012 I started our main blog, Young Wife's Guide. I had no idea at that time that it would become our family's full time income in just three short years. The very first thing we made some money on was an eBook on gardening that I sold for $5.95. I was making like $20 here or there and it was SO exciting!! Later that year, I was approached by a friend to put my book in this brand new eBook bundle she was putting together. That year my gardening book was in the first ever Healthy Living Bundle and I made a few hundred dollars! I think this was a turning point for us. We realized that I could actually make a little income from this. So my goal was to be able to build this up a little bit to have a small side income for when we had kids and I stayed home. Slowly we started working on this blog and building up a bit of side income. And then in December of 2015, Jason quit his full time job in sales to be able to come home and run our businesses from home. We've now been running our online businesses full time for over 18 months and I don't think we could ever go back! This business and running it from home has become such a blessing to our family. How we make money One of the biggest things that people ask us is how we make an income from home. They hear that we run a blog full time and people assume we must run ads on our blog. But in reality - we actually don't run ANY outside ads on our blog. So how do we make money? Here's the breakdown (these numbers are approximate): 20% of our income comes from affiliate sales & sponsored posts 80% of our income comes from selling our own products: digital items, courses, conferences, our academy, etc. Breakdown of 20% These are the percentages for 2016. These seem to be holding true for 2017 but there are still a lot of months in the year left, so that could change. Affiliate Sales Being an affiliate for companies is a wonderful way to start making a little bit of income. It's easy in some ways because you don't have to have your own products or anything. Basically you sign up for an affiliate program with some business or product you already love. They give you a special affiliate link which you then share on your blog, social media, etc. Then whenever anyone purchases something through that link, you get a percentage of that sale. So for Young Wife's Guide (a homemaking blog), that means that I've been an affiliate for natural cleaners, a meal planning website, amazon book recommendations, and more. Sponsored Posts I also work with companies on a VERY limited basis to do sponsored posts. What this means is that a company will pay me up front to promote their business or product to my audience. I do these on a very limited basis and ONLY ever do it for companies that I 100% believe in and would recommend their products anyway. One thing for 2017 we are exploring more is podcast sponsorship for my homemaking podcast: The Homemaking Foundations Podcast. Breakdown of 80% We've done a few things in our business life that has made all the difference!! The first thing was starting our online conference 4 years ago, and the second thing was starting an online digital store. Here's some more details: Homemaking Ministries Store I've been creating digital products for years. The more products we added, the more we realized that we needed a central "store" for all our products. I DREAMED of having a library where my customers could log in and access everything they've purchased from me under one login. So we paid for an expensive custom website which ended up not working and eventually landed on using New Kajabi for our store (which is what this website is also now run on). And we are in LOVE. It's not perfect and still has a few minor things we would change, but overall it has everything we need! (And don't worry - we plan on covering Kajabi in depth in the future and breaking down everything we love about itOur Conference The other thing that has had the most impact is launching our first every online conference in 2014! We had no idea what we were doing, figuring out the technology was a NIGHTMARE, but here we are on our 4th year and still going strong. Our conference has opened up the door to working with other bloggers and ultimately creating our online academy: My Homemaking Mentor! The vast majority of our income comes from selling those two products: our annual conference and our academy. The other smaller products help to fill in the gaps. Every $20 here and there really adds up and helps us pay our bills! Our Next Big Project: The next big project that we will be turning our attention to is our physical store. We have started an online store with physical products. So far we have t-shirts and Scripture memory cards in the store, but we are slowly working on adding more items to that. Our goal by the end of the year is to have 15-20 items in the store!! This has been a really fun new adventure into the realm of physical products, shipping, and sending things out. You can see our store here: Homemaking Ministries Store. And then make sure to stay tuned next week for episode #2. We are going to be talking about How to launch a digital product - a big picture overview!

The dilemma of the poor in Les Misérables The music of the stage show Les Misérables touches many emotions, from the tear-jerking “I Dreamed a Dream”, the haunting “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables”, of unreturned love “On My Own” to the final rousing anthem, “Do You Hear The People Sing?” Two themes dominate the storyline. Firstly, there is the theme of justice without mercy: heartless Javert’s relentlessly pursues Valjean in the name of legalistic justice, even after Valjean becomes a reformed character. Secondly, there is the dilemma that the poor and oppressed (or Les Misérables) of France face, as they suffer while the heartless rich indulge and maintain their lavish lifestyle while ignoring those mush less fortunate than themselves. Should the underclass too try to look after ‘number one’, like the corrupt innkeeper and his wife? Should they follow the path of rebellion, unmercifully turning the tables on the aristocracy in order to become rich themselves? Or should they follow Valjean’s example of grace and mercy now while seeking a better future in God’s kingdom? We face the similar dilemmas in various ways It may not seem immediately obvious, but we face similar dilemmas. Should we follow the path of doing what is wrong, in order to get what we want – do the ends justify the means? Or should we follow God and do what is right, depending on him in the present as we look forward to the fulfilment of promised blessing with him for eternity? Should we compromise our morals for short term gain, or keep integrity and look forward to future blessing as we struggle through current difficulties with God’s strength? Of course, at the same time, we can campaign for truth and justice, in a non-violent manner. (In extreme circumstances, though, it is necessary to overthrow a completely unjust regime, but most situations are much less clear-cut than this.) A Godly alternative to violence and force People often resort to bullying or violence at school, in the office or at home, in order to get their way. Employers and governments too have historically used force to obtain or maintain their position of power and control (such as Syria’s use of force over its citizens at present). Yet, the Bible teaches that meekness (or as it is often translated, gentleness) is an alternative to the use of force. The original word in Greek is used of wild animals that have been tamed, that are under control. They don’t lose their strength, but have it under control. Meekness is not the same as weakness, even though they may look similar at times. In the Bible, meekness is most often described in the context of enduring situations that cannot easily be changed or improved, in a patient, self-controlled manner, while looking forward to God’s blessing in the future. This is the context of Psalm 37, and where Jesus alludes to verse 11 in the beatitude: “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” Matthew 5:5 Bullying, direct action that involves violence, violent demonstrations, and terrorism are therefore clearly all against God’s will. He is the one who will avenge in the long run, and we must respond peacefully in all but the worst situations. nevertheless, peaceful action can be very effective, bringing significant changes. The Bible calls for believers to campaign for justice, and to defend the powerless. But that doesn’t necessarily mean the use of force or violence to do so. It is worth remembering that Jesus taught the beatitudes in a context where others promoted force and armed insurrection against Roman occupation. A guaranteed inheritance, if we will only follow God’s way The famous atheist Frederick Nietzsche, who coined the phrase “God is dead,” once said, “Assert yourself. Care for nothing except yourself. The only vice is weakness and the only virtue is strength. Be strong. Be a superman. The world is yours if you work hard enough for it.” Instead of looking after ‘number one’ by force, Jesus commends meekness and trust in God. Nietzsche could only strive towards his goals, but in contrast God promises to deliver for those who trust in him and follow his way. Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:5 that the meek ‘will inherit’ it all. That is a wonderful promise. But first, we need to trust in Jesus, and have the Spirit of God in our lives We might therefore be tempted to try to follow God’s way of meekness, in order to deserve the promised blessing. However, that would be a mistake. This is because we are naturally not meek. We fail when we try to do what we ought to. Yet, as Paul teaches: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness (meekness) and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22–23, NIV84) In order to have the fruit of the Spirit, we need to have the Spirit of God. In order to have the Spirit of God, we need to have saving faith in Jesus Christ: “Because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.” (Romans 8:14, NIV84) (If you would like to pray a prayer to trust in Jesus, you could use this one. )

On April 11, 2009 there was the shock heard around the world, when a women from Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland walked on stage to sing. Just prior to singing she was asked "What's the dream?""I'm trying to be a professional singer?" she replied."And why hasn't it worked out so far Susan?""I've never been given a chance before, but here's hoping that it will change."With that she went on to sing her version of I Dreamed a Dream and suddenly the world new who Susan Boyle was. She became an overnight success and YouTube sensation and her debut I Dreamed a Dream album went on to sell over 9 million copies. A truly remarkable story. And one that could have easily never been told had she not taken those steps to make it happen and have her voice heard. It all came down to putting it out there and seeing what would happen; in her words "I've never been given a chance before, but here's hoping that it will change."And that is what today's show is about, getting something out there because you never know who is going to see it.Today I am talking to Olivier Asselin and Stefan Sobkowiak about their dream and the steps they took to make it a reality. From concept to final product we go through the making of The Permaculture Orchard. Now you may say, Diego, that's great, but I don't make videos. And I would say, the making of the video is a metaphor for anything that you go out there and do - focusing on quality over quantity and making it happen. Just like permaculture design itself the principles are applicable to a wide range of topics. But like anything else, it goes beyond the technique to taking the steps to actually make it happen. Ideas are great, but execution is paramount. As Stefan says, "anytime you have an idea it really comes down to what are you going to do with it. If you just let it sit you won't know if it flies or not." Show Notes: www.permaculturevoices.com/56

Okay, we're still on December, so there's not a lot of news except there is something very, very exciting that's coming up at the end of the month. Just because it's December, that should not mean that we stop Free Play Sunday. So even though it is before Christmas, we're going to give you a little present after Christmas. Last Sunday in December, tune in to our Facebook page and our Twitter page, and we will be giving away PDFs of some of our plays. We don't know what they are yet, but they're going to be, of course, exciting, wonderful, a good read. And lastly, where, oh where can you find this podcast? We post new episodes every Wednesday on our blog, Theatrefolk.com. You can also find us through the Stitcher app on our Facebook page, and you can subscribe to TFP on iTunes. All you have to do is search on the word “Theatrefolk.” Okay, so it is just before Christmas and there is something very, very exciting for some people that is coming out just before Christmas, and that is the movie version of Les Miz. Craig, can you feel the excitement in the air? Craig: I can hear the people sing. Lindsay: Can you…? [Laughs] Are they singing the songs of angry men? Craig: They might be. Lindsay: [Laughs] And so we thought a perfect way to end our podcasts for the year before we take a little break would be to do a YouTube Fireside Chat on Les Miz, because there are a million squillion jillion different versions out there and concerts. There was lots to find on YouTube, wasn't there? Craig: It's all on YouTube. You can find just about anything on there. You could just sit there all day watching different Les Miz clips. So we kind of had to organize this a little bit. Lindsay: Yes. So what we thought would be a really good thing to do, to take a look at one song and look at different versions of it. And I think there are…you know, I say this is the most iconic song that I… No, I think there are a couple of... Oh, you know, there's a lot of… It's a very iconic large Greek theatre kind of musical anyway, so it's really hard to pinpoint one iconic song. But I really like this one, and that's I Dreamed a Dream. And of course, it is sung by Fantine right after she gets kicked out of her job. And I like this song because I've read the book, and it's literally like 10 chapters like [makes slurping sound] all into one song, and I just think that's good writing. And it's got a nice beat, you can dance to it. Craig: Well, it is a fantastic song. I mean, it's a great song for a singer. It follows this Sondheim thing about every song should be a one-act play. And I mean, this is actually a five-act play, this song… Lindsay: Yeah. Craig: …which covers the whole journey of her life and everything that like led to the lowness that it ha...
