Episode 73: Keyon Harrold. Everywhere I turn, I see Keyon Harrold. He's widely regarded as one of the greatest trumpeters alive today, pushing the new jazz generation forward with power and soul. His solo album Foreverland was GRAMMY-nominated this year for Best Alternative Jazz Album, and his resume is stacked — Jay-Z, Common, Erykah Badu, Diana Ross, Mac Miller, Robert Glasper, the Count Basie Orchestra, Terrace Martin — and he played all the trumpet parts in the Miles Davis biopic Miles Ahead. Keyon is a dear friend and an incredible human being. He drops so much wisdom in this episode and truly inspired me with his words. I hope you enjoy my conversation with the great Keyon Harrold. ‘Go with Elmo Lovano' is a weekly podcast where Elmo interviews creatives and entrepreneurs in music on HOW they push forward every day, got where they are in their careers, manage their personal lives, and share lessons learned and their most important insights. Keyon Harrold has showcased his trumpet playing for various artists in the studio and on the road, most notable Jay-Z on his 2007 hit “Roc Boys (And the Winner Is).” The trumpeter from Ferguson, Missouri started playing around the age of six studying the greats from Miles Davis to Clifford Brown and Clark Terry. His journey led him to a jazz camp in Colorado when he was a teenager, that's where he met future collaborators Robert Glasper and Terrace Martin. Touring with Common for his breakout album Like Water for Chocolate in the early 2000s. Although grateful for the opportunities to share the studio or stage supporting different artists, he has branched out into his own work. Harrold and his trumpet are back front and center on his third solo project Foreverland.

Keyon Harrold is one of the most sought after trumpet players in music right now. He's played with everyone from Beyoncé to Mary J. Blige and Rihanna. On his new album, “Foreverland,” he reflects on empowerment and vulnerability, while also processing a racial assault that he and his son suffered back in 2020. Keyon joins Tom to talk about the record and how he's using music to find his peace.
Trumpeter, singer and composer Keyon Harrold gained a lot of attention for his contribution to the Don Cheadle film Miles Ahead, where he played all of the Miles Davis parts on that Grammy-winning soundtrack. But Keyon's first professional gig was with the rapper Common, and throughout his career he's moved effortlessly between the worlds of jazz, hip hop, soul and R&B, as a trumpeter, and, as a singer and songwriter. His new album, his third, is called Foreverland, and Keyon Harrold and his band PLAY some of it, in-studio. (Serious emphasis on play. The band is a joy to watch! – Caryn Havlik) Set List: 1. Find Your Peace, feat. Stout 2. Don't Lie, feat. Malaya 3. Beautiful Day, feat. Malaya and Stout Foreverland by keyon harrold

In this episode of The Third Story podcast, trumpeter Keyon Harrold talks with host Leo Sidran about his latest album ‘Foreverland' and reflects on his own career.
Trumpeter/composer Keyon Harrold was born and raised in Ferguson, MO to a musical family. He is the son of pastors and one of 16 children. As a boy, a trumpet was placed in his hands, and the rest is history. He moved to New York to study at The New School in the 1990s and became part of a legendary generation of musicians associated with the neo soul movement, including Common, Bilal, Roy Hargrove, The Roots, and Robert Glasper. Harrold is a reliable and sought after player among big acts, and he's worked with Jay-Z, Beyonce, Rihanna, Eminem, Maxwell, Mac Miller and Snoop Dogg. At the same time he's a seriously gifted jazz improviser and composer, who was mentored by trumpeter Charles Tolliver, and who was once referred to as “the future of the trumpet” by Wynton Marsalis. He supplied all of the trumpet playing in Don Cheadle's Miles Davis biopic Miles Ahead, playing to match Cheadle's on-screen performance as Miles. The soundtrack to the film won a Grammy. But while Keyon has enjoyed what might appear to be a charmed career, he has also had a series of unexpected setbacks and heavy lived experiences that contribute to his musical journey. His new album Foreverland is a celebration of his multidimensional career and his sensitivity as an artist, proving that Harrold is a master of channeling his lived experience through his horn. The album features 10 original songs that explore themes of empowerment, positivity, love, loss, and vulnerability. And it's a family affair — nearly every musician is a longtime friend, including Common, Robert Glasper, Laura Mvula, Chris Dave, Marcus Gilmore, Nir Felder, Randy Runyon, BIGYUKI, Burniss Travis and many others. Here he talks about Foreverland, how a series of losses in his life ultimately led him to make “something beautiful, something positive, something inspiring,” and his reflections on the early days of his career as part of a community of like minded musicians who were “always open.” www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast

Sax player Marcus Strickland has worked with many notable jazzers, including Roy Haynes, McCoy Tyner, Wynton Marsalis, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Dave Douglas, and Keyon Harrold. He also leads his own band Twi-Life, which inhabits an Afro-futuristic space at the crossroads of Hip Hop, Soul, and Jazz. Twi-Life's album, The Universe's Wildest Dream, conceptualized into being during the lockdown times, urges an awareness of how precious and miraculous and random and delicate our existence is here on Planet Earth, the vast universe, (and everything.) On the album, Marcus Strickland & Charles Haynes stretch out into beat-makers and producers, fleshing out layered studio creations with found sound, guest artists, overdubs and electronics, and ultimately extend the Afro-Futurist tradition to far-out places. Strickland and Twi-Life bring a Hammond B-3 organ with hypnotic Leslie speakers into the studio to play some of the tunes, ahead of the record release, and shows in New York at the Blue Note on Jan. 17 & 18. Set list: “Dust Ball Fantasy” “Bird Call” “You and I, an Anomaly”

A gunman rushed into the Texas Commerce Bank, barking orders. He wore a mask. He disguised his voice. Bank tellers Kelly McGinnis and Lisa Silvas were terrified. It had finally happened. The bank was being robbed. The young tellers had asked management to increase security measures. But management said that the motor bank, which only provided drive-thru service, was secure enough. The gunman proved them wrong. Then Kristin tells us about Keyon Harrold and his 14-year-old son, Keyon Harrold Jr, who were staying at the Arlo SoHo Hotel on December 26, 2020. That morning, they headed down to the hotel's restaurant for brunch. On the way there, an irate woman accused Keyon Harrold Jr of stealing her cell phone. When Keyon Harrold Senior told her to back off, she chased after them, tackling 14-year-old Keyon to the ground. A video of the incident went viral. People dubbed the woman SoHo Karen, though her true identity quickly became known. Her name was Miya Ponsetto, and she wasn't very sorry. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: Keyon Harrold's Instagram “Woman pleads guilty to tackling Black teen she wrongly accused of phone theft,” by Jonathan Edwards for The Washington Post “Miya Ponsetto, woman who falsely accused Black teen of stealing her phone at NYC hotel, makes plea deal,” by Zoe Christen Jones for CBS News “Woman who tackled Black teenager at SoHo hotel is arrested,” by Mihir Zaveri for The New York Times “Woman who falsely accused Black teen in SoHo is charged with hate crime,” by Precious Fondren for The New York Times “Woman pleads guilty to tackling Black teen at SoHo hotel,” by Ed Shanahan for The New York Times “Parents of the teen who Miya Ponsetto falsely accused say her arrest is the first step for justice,” CBS This Morning video on YouTube “‘SoHo Karen' is no-show in civil case, shows ‘disrespect': judge,” by Tamar Lapin for the New York Post “Jazz musician calls for charges against woman who falsely accused Black son of theft,” by Haley Yamada and Sabina Ghebremedhin for ABC News “Video emerges of ‘SoHo Karen' Miya Ponsetto fighting with cops during DUI bust,” by Rebecca Rosenberg for the New York Post Miya Ponsetto's interview with Gayle King for CBS This Morning on YouTube In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “The Almost Great Bank Robbery” by Skip Hollandsworth, Texas Monthly “True Crimes: Don't Mess With Texas (Banks)” by Kara Kovalchik, Mental Floss “Ex-cop, bank robber in trouble again” by Guillermo Contreras, mysanantonio.com “Sentencing delayed for former SAPD officer turned bank robber” KENS 5 News YOU'RE STILL READING? L'Rain, Keyon Harrold, Hinako Omori and Sinkane discuss not getting stuck on the details, the visceral versus the cerebral, why there's nothing like those vibrations in the room where you play, and why writing music is like walking to the shops. L'Rain is an experimental multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and vocalist from New York, who makes music that is an intoxicating blend of R&B, free jazz, noise music, and orchestral pop. She was also once in an Iron Maiden covers band. Jazz trumpeter, vocalist, songwriter, and producer Keyon Harrold was born into a musical family of 17 children. He's provided instrumentation for Beyonce, 50 Cent, Jay Z, former Music Life guest Gregory Porter and Mary J Blige, as well as being a trumpet stunt double in the film Miles Ahead. Hinako Omori is a musician and producer with a love for synthesisers who was born in Yokohoma, Japan, and is now based in London. She's worked with artists including Kae Tempest, EOB, and Georgia. You may recognise our host Sinkane's voice, as the Sudanese-American multi-instrumentalist and singer has previously hosted the Music Life show, chatting to the likes of David Byrne, St Vincent, Cautious Clay, Emel Mathlouthi and Vagabon.

This week, a year since the death of George Floyd and the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement, writers and artists reflect on the impact of those events. After George Floyd's death, thousands of people took to the streets calling for change and an end to systemic racism. US Politician and voting rights activist Stacey Abrams has been working to bring about that change. She's also an acclaimed author who has written her first political thriller, While Justice Sleeps. Reflecting on events of the last year, Stacey Abrams tells Sherri Jackson how storytelling is the common thread through her work and a powerful tool in politics. During the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020, statues representing slavery and oppression were torn down and murals started going up in the US and all over the world. From the Kibera settlement in Nairobi, Kenya and the highways of Sao Paulo, Brazil, we hear why street artists near and far from the States have taken up the cause of Black Lives Matter and made it their own. Hailing from Ferguson, Missouri, Grammy award winning jazz trumpeter Keyon Harrold ‘s powerful ‘MB Lament' responded to the 2014 death of Michael Brown in his home town. In the wake of George Floyd's death, Keyon Harrold has spoken out against racial injustice and turned to music to process trauma and pay tribute. Keyon speaks to Sherri about using jazz as a language when words fail him. And how do we talk about racism and anti-racism to children? Jason Reynolds, poet, author and the US National Ambassador for Young People's Literature, explains how he tackles difficult subjects through his writing for teenagers. Presented by Sherri Jackson (Photo: Kenyan mural artist Allan Mwangi, also known as Mr.detail.seven, paints a graffiti mural in the Kibera settlement in Nairobi, Kenya. Okay....a LOT went down since last episode, so let's talk about it. In this episode, we talk about the aftermath of the U.S. Capitol Insurrection, triggered by Trump's inability to accept his rightfully earned "L." We discuss the fallout: the resignations, the arrests, and Trump being banned from almost every single social media app. Well....there's always OnlyFans, sir. (Start at 0:42) Elsewhere, we talk about Miya "SoHo Karen" Ponsetto finally being arrested for attacking the son of jazz trumpeter Keyon Harrold...but not before flexing her privilege one last time with Gayle King. (20:30) We also talk about VP-Elect Kamala Harris' VOGUE covers and the surrounding hoopla (26:13), as well as VERZUZ going back to basics in the midst of rising COVID-19 cases. (34:09) We also get into the discussion on the newly confirmed relationship of Michael B. Jordan and Lori Harvey and why SHE is getting heat for doing what most 20-somethings should be doing anyway. No slut shaming out this way! (1:05:30) Finally, we talk about a unique case in Maryland's Appeals Court of a rapper who was found guilty of murder, and his rap freestyle being used as evidence to convict him, which leads to a small discussion on people misconstruing the 1st Amendment. Some folks didn't pay attention in Civics class, and it CLEARLY shows. (1:16:30)
