It has been 100 years since a young animator sold his first film series, called Alice Comedies, to a distributor. Without knowing, he was starting what became one of the world's biggest media empires. The company took his family name: Disney. The studio has led and shaped the animation industry for generations, and it's now in the very heart of global culture. In this episode of The Cultural Frontline, we speak to animators responsible for some of Disney and Pixar's most successful films. We also explore the creative, technological and cultural challenges Disney and the wider animation industry are facing today. Veteran animator Floyd Norman has worked with Disney since the 1950s, on films like Sleeping Beauty and The Jungle Book. His colleague Tony Bancroft was the co-director of Mulan and the creator of one of the most beloved Disney characters, Pumbaa the warthog, in The Lion King. They talk about the milestones of Disney history. Oscar-winning director Brenda Chapman reflects on the role of women on screen and in production, and talks about the inspiration for Merida, Brave's anti-princess. Plus, Rebecca Sugar, and Frank Abney discuss how the fight for LGBTQ+ rights and the Black Lives Matter movement are changing the animation industry. Presenter: Brian Sibley Producer: Constanza Hola
Greg Glasgow and Kathryn Mayer discuss their new book, Disneyland on the Mountain: Walt, The Environmentalists, and the Ski Resort That Never Was. Then, from 2010, Disney animator Floyd Norman.

In celebration of this weekend's D23 convention in Anaheim, California, we're happy to revisit this episode from August of 2018: Floyd Norman is an official Disney Legend, and so much more: Walt Disney's first full-time African-American animator, a contributor to such films as Sleeping Beauty and The Jungle Book, a disciple of Disney's legendary Nine Old Men, and a story man on such Pixar features as Toy Story 2 and Monsters Inc. What's more, as Leonard and Jessie have learned, he's a naturally funny man, a great storyteller, and a sweetheart of a guy with an irreverent sense of humor. He's even the subject of a first-class documentary called Floyd Norman: An Animated Life. Tune in for some great anecdotes and first-hand memories of Walt Disney. Recorded live at That's from Disneyland, courtesy of its creators Richard and Nicky Kraft

Episode 244: Floyd Norman. Join host Cody with Justin, Jenn, Joe, and friend of the show, Animator, Screenwriter, Artist, & Disney Legend Floyd Norman. Settle in and enjoy the master storyteller. Norman had his start as an assistant to comic book artist Bill Woggon, who lived in the Santa Barbara, California, area that Norman grew up in. Norman first joined the Disney studio in 1956. As an in-betweener on Sleeping Beauty, he assisted Frank Thomas working on the fairies Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather. As an assistant animator on Mary Poppins, he worked on The Pearly Band. As a story artist on The Jungle Book, he was responsible for much of the gags in the "Trust In Me" sequence with Mowgli and Kaa, and for the Vultures. After Walt Disney's death in 1966, Floyd Norman left Disney Studios to co-found the AfroKids animation studio, with business partner animator/director Leo Sullivan. Norman and Sullivan worked together on various projects such as the original Hey! Hey! Hey! It's Fat Albert television special which aired in 1969 on NBC (not to be confused with the later Fat Albert series made by Filmation Associates). Norman returned to Disney at one point in the early 1970s to work on the Disney animated feature Robin Hood and worked on several animated television programs at Hanna-Barbera and Ruby-Spears. In the 1980s he worked as a writer in the comic strip department at Disney and was the last scripter for the Mickey Mouse comic strip before it was discontinued. More recently he has worked on motion pictures for Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar Animation Studios, having contributed creatively as a story artist on films, such as Toy Story 2 and Monsters, Inc. for Pixar and Mulan, Dinosaur, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame for Walt Disney Animation, among others. He continues to work for the Walt Disney Co. as a freelance consultant on various projects. Floyd Norman is an icon in the world of animation. Beginning with the Walt Disney Studios in 1956, Floyd worked as an animator on films like Sleeping Beauty (1959), The Sword in the Stone (1963), and The Jungle Book (1967). After Walt's death in 1966, Floyd left Disney to co-found his own animation company, and he continued to work on projects for Disney and Pixar throughout his career, including Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971), Robin Hood (1973), Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), Mulan (1998), Toy Story 2 (1999), and more. In 2007, Floyd was named a Disney Legend, and in 2013, he published his own book, Animated Life: A lifetime of tips, tricks, and stories from a Disney legend with publisher Focal Press. In 2016, Floyd's career was memorialized in a documentary called Floyd Norman: An Animated Life from Directors Michael Fiore and Erik Sharkey and Fiore Media Group, which you can buy at http://www.floydnormanmovie.com. The documentary appeared on Netflix for 3 years and recently aired on Turner Classic Movies as the closing night movie for the "Home Edition" TCM Classic Film Festival. At 85 years young, Floyd is still working on a number of projects for Disney and beyond, and is available to appear for in-person speaking engagements and masterclasses at colleges, conferences, and museums around the globe. In this episode, I chat with Floyd about his career at Disney. We also chat about his book, his documentary, and more. Guests visit the island by traveling on a motorized raft which is piloted by a Disneyland Cast Member. The short 3D Jamboree features the famous Mouseketeers and their leader Jimmy Dodd. The presentation includes the animated shorts Melody and Working for Peanuts all in 3D. Storybook Land Canal Boats (originally known as Canal Boats of the World in 1955) features 13 boats (powered by outboard motors) afloat in 465,000 gallons of water.1958:Disneyland's Columbia ship opens on the Rivers of America. It is a full-scale version of the first ship to carry the American flag around the world. It actually was built in large part from the plans for the HMS Bounty (of mutiny fame). Disney's shipbuilders couldn't find plans for the original Columbia, so they relied heavily on those of Captain Bligh's ship, which had similar dimensions. It has cost $300,000 to build. Fowler's Harbor (named after Admiral Joseph Fowler, who helped to build Disneyland) is also officially opened on this day to dock the new ship. A dedication ceremony takes place with Fowler and Walt Disney himself in attendanceThe Disneyland attraction Alice in Wonderland debuts in Fantasyland. Actress, Kathryn Beaumont, voice of Alice in the 1951 animated movie, provides the voice for the dark ride. It follows the path of the movie, as the riders (as Alice) follow the White Rabbit down the Rabbit Hole into Wonderland. Disneyland's first "Alice" attraction - Mad Tea Party (a spinning tea cup ride), has been operating since the park's debut in July 19551959:Three major attractions are christened at Disneyland on this day:The first urban monorail system in the U.S., the Disneyland-Alweg Monorail System, begins operation in California's Disneyland. The two Mark I trains run on a .8 mile track around Tomorrowland. Walt Disney and U.S. Vice president Nixon and their families are on hand for the dedication of the "Highway in the Sky." (In June 1961, the Monorail will become a true transportation link instead of just a sightseeing ride. With an extended 2 1/2 mile track, Disneyland Hotel guests will be able to board the Monorail at the hotel and begin their park visit in Tomorrowland.)Also on this day at Disneyland, the Matterhorn Mountain with its Matterhorn Bobsleds, opens. Modeled after the Matterhorn, a real mountain in the Swiss Alps, it is the first roller coaster to use cylindrical rails and urethane wheels (which will become standard in the roller coaster industry). At 147 feet tall, the Matterhorn contains 500 tons of structural steel. The ride consists of two separate tracks that run somewhat parallel to each other for much of the ride, intertwining and eventually deviating from each other at the loading areas. The Submarine Voyage ride is officially dedicated on this day as well in Tomorrowland (although it has has been open since June 6). The attraction has cost about $2.5 million to create. The Nautilus and 7 sister submarines - the Triton, Sea Wolf, Skate, Skipjack, George Washington, Patrick Henry, and Ethan Allen allow 38 Disneyland guests at a time to take their own voyage to the North Pole. For the dedication of the new Submarine Voyage attraction the opening ceremonies feature eight live mermaids performing a synchronized swimming ballet in the lagoon.Mrs. Mildred Nelson, wife of the chief machinist on the the first nuclear-powered submarine, USS Nautilus, helps Walt Disney christen the sub D-301, appropriately named Nautilus. Also taking place at 1:30 is a special dedication parade specifically designedfor this day's festivities. The parade and all the day's events are filmed for an ABC television special to be titled Kodak Presents Disneyland ’59.1967:The Club 33 restaurant (for members-only) opens at 33 Royal Street, in New Orleans Square at Disneyland. It is comprised of two dining rooms and several adjoining areas, all of which hold a wide array of magnificent antiques and original works of art. A secret feature of the theme park, the entrance of the private club is located next to the Blue Bayou Restaurant at "33 Royal Street" with the entrance recognizable by an ornate address plate with the number 33 engraved on it.1971:The All American College Band performs for the very first time at Disneyland. The All-American College Band, made up of musicians from colleges all across the United States, will perform for 11 weeks throughout the summer (and become a yearly tradition).1972:The Main Street Electric Parade kicks off at Disneyland for the very first time. The floats include the Blue Fairy, Casey Junior Circus Train, Alice In Wonderland, Chinese Dragon, Dumbo’s Circus, Cinderella’s Ball, "it’s a small world", and the American Finale.1974:Disney World’s "Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue" dinner show debuts in Pioneer Hall at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground. Created as a college workshop summer production only, guest response will be so positive that Walt Disney World entertainment will continue the show with a permanent professional cast at the end of the 1974 summer! 1975:Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln returns to Disneyland after being replaced in 1973 with The Walt Disney Story.1983:The Disneyland parade Flights of Fantasy, which celebrates the opening of the New Fantasyland, debuts.1999:Disney's animated feature Tarzan premieres in the U.S. at the El Capitan Theater in HollywoodThe computer controlled sign that welcomes guests to the main entrance of Disneyland's parking lot is removed. Its site will be absorbed into the new California Adventure area. (This is only the second sign to greet guests as they entered Disneyland in the park's 44 year history. The original marquee, erected in 1958, had letters that had to be changed by hand!) Disney's 37th animated feature Tarzan is generally released in the U.S.2010:Toy Story 3 has its worldwide premiere at Taormina Film Fest in Italy. (It will premiere in the U.S. the following day.)2012:An expanded and spruced-up Carnation Café debuts on Main Street, U.S.A., in Disneyland park.A 4.1 earthquake in Yorba Linda that shake parts of Southern California on this evening adds a little extra unexpected excitement to the star-studded red carpet opening of the new Cars Land at the Disneyland Resort.Disneyland Resort caps off its $1 billion renovation of Disney California Adventure with the public opening of Cars Land and the new Buena Vista Street. Based on the Disney-Pixar movie Cars, Cars Land is the largest piece of a five-year expansion at Disney California Adventure Park, adding 12 acres of new attractions to the theme park. It is a recreation of the fictional town of Radiator Springs, featuring Luigi's Flying Tires, which flies riders over what looks like a giant air hockey table; Mater's Junkyard Jamboree, which swings riders in trailers in a "tow-si-do" square dance; and Radiator Springs Racers, which takes riders through a race through a mountain range.2016:Finding Dory, a 3D computer-animated comedy adventure film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures, hits U.S. theaters. The revamped Soarin’ flight simulator rides at Disney California Adventure and Epcot open to guests. Now called Soarin' Around the World, new scenes include a flight over Switzerland’s Matterhorn, the Arctic Ocean with a leaping whale, the Sydney Opera House in Australia, Germany’s Neuschwanstein castle, a herd of African elephants, the Great Wall of China, Egyptian pyramids, India’s Taj Mahal, hot air balloons in Monument Valley on the Arizona-Utah border, outrigger boats off Fiji, the Iguazu waterfalls on the Argentina-Brazil border and France’s Eiffel Tower. A new soundtrack performed by the London Studio Orchestra is based on Jerry Goldsmith's original Soarin’ score. Patrick Warburton (best known as Elaine’s on-again, off-again boyfriend Puddy on "Seinfeld") returns as chief flight attendant and host.2018:Incredibles 2, a computer-animated superhero film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, is released to theaters in the U.S.Topic 2 - News ReopeningDatesAPExpiration stays the same or extendRecharge for paymentNew expirationTicketsHotels updateJosh D’AMaro Announcement:Topic 3 - MerchNew Disney Rainbow Collection Mickey Loungefly Backpack and Dog Tee Parades into shopDisney for Pride MonthNew Rainbow Mickey Collection Drops on shopDisney In Honor of Pride MonthNew Pirates of the Caribbean Loungefly Mini Backpack Sails Into shopDisneyTopic 4 - Hidden MickeyTopic 5 - FoodCooking up the magic: The chefs at Lamplight Lounge in Disney California Adventure park have put a fun spin on a lunchtime classic with these PB and J Rolls.Topic 6 - Events/EntertainmentArtemis Fowl is now streaming on Disney+MAIN - Disney's Black CultureDisney+Splash Mountain rethemingThe Walt Disney Company has pledged $5 million to support nonprofit organizations that advance social justice, beginning with a $2 million donation to the NAACP to further their longstanding work promoting social justice by eliminating disparities and racial discrimination through their advocacy and education programs.“The killing of George Floyd has forced our nation to once again confront the long history of injustice that black people in America have suffered, and it is critical that we stand together, speak out and do everything in our power to ensure that acts of racism and violence are never tolerated,” said Bob Chapek, Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company. “This $5 million pledge will continue to support the efforts of nonprofit organizations such as the NAACP that have worked tirelessly to ensure equality and justice.”In addition, through the Disney Employee Matching Gifts program, employees are able to increase their impact in their communities by donating to eligible organizations, with the Company matching those gifts.Disney’s “Real Change” In Wake Of George Floyd Killing ProtestsBelow is a link to a statement we sent to our fellow @Disney employees. The word "legend" is thrown around a lot these days, but the guests we assembled for this panel at LA Comic-Con truly embody the word. Each of them made a significant impact on Disney, Nickelodeon, and the world of animation at large. Floyd Norman started his career at Disney in the 1950, Tom Sito helped craft the Disney animation Renaissance of the 90s, Cheryl Chase was there at the dawn of Nickelodeon with the birth of Ren and Stimpy, and Oscar Nominated Director Doug Sweetland started at Pixar in the early days of Toy Story. Pull out your sketch pad and get animated with this episode of THE NIGHT TIME SHOW!

Floyd Norman is an official Disney Legend, and so much more: Walt Disney’s first full-time African-American animator, a contributor to such films as Sleeping Beauty and The Jungle Book, a disciple of Disney’s legendary Nine Old Men, and a story man on such Pixar features as Toy Story 2 and Monsters Inc. What’s more, as Leonard and Jessie have learned, he’s a naturally funny man, a great storyteller, and a sweetheart of a guy with an irreverent sense of humor. He’s even the subject of a first-class documentary called Floyd Norman: An Animated Life. Tune in for some great anecdotes and first-hand memories of Walt Disney. Recorded live at That’s from Disneyland, courtesy of its creators Richard and Nicky Kraft

Thoughts on maintaining Micro.blog for both iOS and the Mac, then closing the week with a quote from Floyd Norman’s blog.
At the D23 Expo 2015 – 2 years ago, Richard Sherman first introduced us to “A Kiss Goodnight”. It is the story of a young Walt Disney, a poor farm boy from Marceline, Missouri who was fascinated by the annual Fourth of July fireworks. It was those fireworks that led to the initial spark that leads to Walt’s great imagination…the imagination that would ultimately bring us Disneyland. Remembering the Fourth of July fireworks from home, Walt wanted to leave every Disneyland guest with a special “Kiss Goodnight”, a Fourth of July fireworks celebration every night. We first heard Ashley Brown sing that song at the Expo in 2015. The song “A Kiss Goodnight” was featured during the Disneyland 60thAnniversary fireworks. It’s fitting two years later, at the D23 Expo 2017: “A Kiss Goodnight” a special book co-created by Disney Legends Richard M. Sherman and Floyd Norman, made its debut. What I would consider an adult picture book, starts with “Long ago, there was a farm in Missouri…” and concludes with “There was always a kiss goodnight” and includes a CD of the Ashley Brown recording of the original Richard Sherman song, “A Kiss Goodnight”. The book is illustrated by Disney Legend and animator Floyd Norman, following Walt’s journey. The book tells the story of a young Walt in Marceline and his inspiration from the free fireworks show, following the story Richard introduced us to at the D23 Expo 2015. At the D23 Expo 2017, “A Kiss Goodnight with Disney Legends Richard Sherman and Floyd Norman” arena panel was our first introduction to the book. It was hosted by Wendy Lefkon, Editorial Director Disney Editions. Richard tells a slightly different story of how the book came to be than the 2015 Expo, providing additional details behind the scenes. According to Richard, A Kiss Goodnight was actually a Disney Channel Television series that was never produced. Richard had written the theme song for the never produced TV series. The song was recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra and performed at the D23 Expo 2015. Wendy Lefkon was inspired by the song and the story Richard told at the D23 Expo 2015 – that inspiration led to the book and D23 2017 panel that is SamsDisneyDiary Episode 95. You can watch the full panel here and listen to the audio on SamsDisneyDiary the podcast.
Floyd Norman is busier than ever. He is 82 and still working at the job he started in the 1950s. A cartoonist all his life, Floyd enjoyed a hugely successful career creating some of Disney’s most iconic characters. As a young cartoonist he was handpicked by Walt Disney to be part of the team behind The Jungle Book. He also worked on classics such as Sleeping Beauty, One Hundred and One Dalmatians and Mary Poppins. Later, at Pixar, Floyd brought his creative flair to Toy Story 2 and Monsters, Inc. But Disney’s first black animator says he was “pushed out” of the job that he loved when he reached the traditional retirement age. With cartoons and a love of animation in his blood, he refused to accept that his career was over. He returned to work and has since been honored with the title, Disney Legend, in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to The Walt Disney Company. In this in-depth interview Floyd explains how being busy in his 80s helps him stay young; how, as an “old codger,” he reinvented himself by learning to use digital editing software; and why “not clinging to the past” is the key to keeping his mind active and vital.

Welcome back to the Neverland Podcast! This is a week to celebrate, and cry. This week we've experienced a birthday of Disney icon. He's got the sweetest disposition and has gotten stuck with all the bad luck for 83 years and we in Neverland are going to celebrate Donald Duck! Welcome back to the Neverland Podcast! Tom Kane is a voiceover actor that has probably been in just about every animated series you’ve loved. He was both Yoda and Adm. Yularen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the chancellor in Tim Burton’s 9, Magneto in Wolverine and the X-Men, and Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds. Some of his other credits include Ultron in Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow and The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, as well as Mr. Herriman in Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, Lord Monkey Fist on Kim Possible, and even Professor Utonium and Him in The Powerpuff Girls. Kane also is a prominent videogame voice actor, appearing in numerous titles from bits parts to major roles like Gandalf, Professor X, and the lead characters in many Star Wars games. He also is the voice of Takeo Masaki, a Japanese World War II soldier in the Zombies game mode of the Call of Duty game franchise. Outside of animation, he records movie trailers, television promos and commercials, as well as various awards programs, including the Oscars. And in 2012, he took over for Joe Hursh as the voice of the Walt Disney World Monorail System in Florida. And if that wasn’t enough, Kane also is the voice of the Plague Champion in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II. That's what you can read on the official website for Planet Comicon. The Disney Classics are ... classics, and with good reason: they had superbly talented people undertaking huge and complicated projects for years on end, culminating in stories and films that are still relevant today. On this show, we talk to the filmmakers of a documentary about one such man who was at the forefront of these classic films ... Floyd Norman: An Animated Life But first ... Nothing - we get right to it with filmmakers Michael Fiore and Erik Sharkey talking about their new film, "Floyd Norman: An Animated Life. We loved this film, and both Michael and Erik did a great job getting some great stories out of Floyd in the movie - which didn't seem to involve too much coaxing. Floyd is a very interesting guy with a massive amount of work to his credit, much of it on animated classics that helped to shape the field. To coincide with the movie release on Blu-Ray, Michael and Erik are having a contest called, "Floydering with Floyd", and all you have to do is the following: Buy a copy of the Blu-Ray Snap a photo of you with the film Post it on social media with the hashtag "#Floydering" That's it! Anyway, thanks to the guys for coming on and talking with us about our new crush! Speaking of crushes, we have Jeremy from SpectroRadio on again to give us some more history of Disney music, then we do our feedback segment, Fact of the Show, and we are done! See you in the Parks! Welcome back to the Neverland Podcast! Please welcome back to Neverland, our friend Trenton Larkin of "Who Did That Voice?"! Trenton is joining me today to discuss some fun Disney news and talk about the new "Power Rangers" movie! Is this film a good time for fans of the series and non-fans alike? We'll also visit the Neverland Trailer Park this week for a look at a new trailer of "Justice League" coming this November statting Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot! Our main feature this week is a special one as I welcome Michael Fiore and Erik Sharkey! Perhaps you've seen on Netflix, they have a wonderful documentary called "Floyd Norman: An Animated Life" about the first African-American Disney animator who's credits include "The Jungle Book"! This week, we are beyond thrilled to be joined by an actual Disney Legend: capital D, capital L. Floyd Norman's career with Disney stretches back to 1956 when he was still a teenager and joined the company as an in-betweener on Sleeping Beauty. He worked with Walt Disney himself on a number of projects -- most notably The Jungle Book -- and was involved in various feature films (The Sword in the Stone, Robin Hood, Mary Poppins, Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc.) up until his "retirement" in 2001. In 2007, he was named a Disney Legend.
Welcome to the April 2015 episode of the Disney Avenue Podcast! This month we have legendary animator Floyd Norman joining us. Though he prefers to be called a “cartoonist,” few other artists working in animation today can boast a career as varied as that of Floyd Norman. From the 1950s to today, Floyd’s diverse career, insightful viewpoint, and unflinching honesty have truly made him a Disney Legend. The Disney Avenue Podcast is thrilled to bring to you the legendary animator himself.
