This D23: Ultimate Fan Event 2024 celebrated The Sherman Brothers in a big way. They have contributed so much to Disney's legacy, so we wanted to take this episode to pay our own special tribute to them. Walt Disney hired Richard and Robert Sherman in 1960 to be the Walt Disney Studios ONLY in-house composers, and they worked on such classics like Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, The Parent Trap, “The Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room”, “it's a small world after all”, and hundreds more. Richard and Sarah give a brief history of the Sherman Brothers and share our personal stories meeting Richard Sherman.    Then, sit back and listen to the entire “Road To Cherry Tree Lane: Walt Disney's Mary Poppins” panel, recorded at D23 2024. Disney music historian Randy Thornton hosted this panel in which he shares how Walt's daughters Diane and Sharon, Davy Crockett, Disneyland/Vista Records, and Annette Funicello were all crucial intersections on “The Road to Cherry Tree Lane ” and Walt Disney's Mary Poppins. You'll hear some great history, and also audio excerpts from the story meetings between the Sherman Brothers and P.L. Travers - writer of Mary Poppins books. If you watch this episode on YouTube, you'll see a slideshow of images to go along with the panel.   Prepare yourself, because the tributes continue! During the D23 Disney Parks Showcase panel at The Honda Center on 8/10/24, Meghan Trainor stepped onstage to sing "Feed The Birds", and we've included an excerpt here.   Today in Star Wars History - 8/19/1973   Happy Birthday Ahmed Best! For the Star Wars Prequels, Ahmed Best provided the motion capture and voice for Jar Jar Binks who was the first fully-computer-generated supporting character in a feature film.    He also provided the voice for Jar Jar in Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series and has a cameo as Achk Med-Beq in Attack of the Clones.    Ahmed returned to the Star Wars saga in a flashback to Order 66 in The Mandalorian episode, “Chapter 20: The Foundling,” He is the Jedi Kelleran Beq who saves Grogu. Teenagers scare the living sh*t out of me!Join BP, Coop and Justin as we discuss Eden Lake, the British 2008 horror in which Nursery school teacher Jenny Greengrass and her boyfriend Steve Taylor journey to a remote lake in the wooded English countryside. Steve has visited the spot before, and remembers it as an open area, but since his visit the land has been bought up by a development company. Despite “Keep Out” signs, they proceed to the lakeside, where they meet Adam, a young boy gathering insects. As Steve and Jenny relax beside the lake, the peaceful setting is disrupted by a gang of rowdy teenagers, who have ridden their bicycles to a spot within a few metres of the young couple. Steve asks them to keep the noise down, but is met with abuse, and one boy accuses Steve of ogling his girlfriend. The next morning Steve and Jenny find their food supplies infested with insects, and their car tire damaged by a bottle left behind by the teens.Driving into town for breakfast, Steve spots a house with bikes outside that he thinks belong to the teens. When no one answers the door, Steve enters the house and proceeds to snoop around. But on the return of Jon, the surly homeowner, Steve is obliged to make his escape from an upstairs window.Back at the lake, Steve goes scuba diving while Jenny sleeps on the shore. Steve has been planning to propose, and is starting a story about “finding” the ring in the lake when he discovers that the bag with their car keys, phone and wallet is missing; their car is also gone. Returning to town on foot, they avoid collision with their own car, driven recklessly through the woods by the gang's psychopathic leader, Brett.Finding the gang in the woods after nightfall, Steve demands the return of his belongings, only to be pounced by the knife-wielding teens. In the scuffle, Brett's rottweiler Bonnie is mortally knifed, provoking Brett into a maniacal rage. The couple grab the keys and drive off, but the gang throws stones at them, causing Steve to crash the car. With Steve trapped, Jenny is forced to run for help.Follow the Complete Guide to Horror Movies podcast on our social channels below.↪ Facebook↪ TikTok↪ Twitter↪ Instagram↪ Subscribe to our YouTube channel↪ Tip us $5↪ LinktreeOn Rotten Tomatoes, a review aggregator, 80% of 28 surveyed critics gave the film a positive review; the average rating is 6.4/10. The site's critical consensus reads: "A brutal and effective British hoodie-horror that, despite the clichés, stays on the right side of scary."Dennis Harvey reviewed the film for Variety and said that it was "an effectively harrowing Brit thriller-cum-horror pic," comparing it to Last House on the Left and Lord of the Flies. The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw drew parallels with Deliverance, Straw Dogs and Blue Remembered Hills, and stated that "this looks to me like the best British horror film in years: nasty, scary and tight as a drum," concluding that the film was "exceptionally well made, ruthlessly extreme, relentlessly upsetting."Other critics, however, have savaged the film, denouncing it as an incitement to class prejudice against working class people in Britain. The Sun condemned the film's "nasty suggestion that all working-class people are thugs" while The Daily Telegraph concluded that "this ugly witless film expresses fear and loathing of ordinary English people". Owen Jones, in his book Chavs: The Demonization of the Working Class cites the film at length as an example of media demonisation of proletarian youth via the "Chav" stereotype. He comments, "Here was a film arguing that the middle classes could no longer live alongside the quasi-bestial lower orders."Eden Lake has been linked with other films that deal with concerns over "Broken Britain" and a fear of "hoodies," including Harry Brown, The Disappeared, Summer Scars, Outlaw, The Great Ecstasy of Robert Carmichael, Cherry Tree Lane and Heartless.#horror #movie #death #horrorfilm #splatter #deathscene #blood #gore #scarymovie #horror #completeguidetohorror #horrormovie #scary #creepy #graphic #edenlake #britain #brokenbritain #tory #hostage #thriller #britishhorror #britishfilm #skins #peepshow #smackmybitchup #theprodigy #meangirls

Raiders of the Podcast

Two journeys into realms of imagination from the dark recesses of Disney. One a dark and twisted soot covered nightmare of the past, the other a glimpse at some not so far off electronic afterlife.     When the wind changes on Cherry Tree Lane, a supernatural figure descends from the sky to teach a lesson to a pair of feral children. Also drawn in is a unemployed bystander just trying to scrape enough to not have to sleep on the street. The trio will be force marched through an episodic nightmarescape of delusion and class warfare. All for the twisted amusement of this child obsessed monster... Mary Poppins.     Not learning the proper lessons from digital Rome, Kevin Flynn finds an easy way to monetize his experience and promises to lead the species into a golden dawn. Flynn promptly disappears. Two decades later his son, Sam, goes looking for him, only to fall into the same trap. Waking in the miraculous though slightly boring looking world of The Grid. A place where things can happen but only things that have happened before. Freed from the constraints of physics but designed by an unimaginative megalomaniac. Can Sam free Kevin and save both world? What is the Tron: Legacy?     All that and Dave sings, Tyler gets his teens in trouble on, and Kevin feels a shudder. Join us, won't you?Episode 201- Digital Chalk

Mary Poppins (Original London Cast) Amazon / iTunes / Spotify SHOW NOTES: Mary Poppins inspired our inner children to open the show today reminiscing on Rocko’s Modern Life and Wacky Races. What would be on your vintage reboot list? If you’ve somehow managed to miss the original movie, you MUST correct that immediately. The opening ceremony to the UK Olympics as some kind of fever dream but nothing more feverish than Mary Poppins squaring up to He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named himself! Mary Poppins has been parodied across all forms of media. Meet a few of our favourites: Mrs. Doubtfire, Mrs Featherbottom and Shary Bobbins. Do you have a favourite? Jo from Supernanny is probably the closest thing we have to a real-life Mary Poppins. If you’re a Mary Poppins fan then I don’t doubt you’ll have seen the beautiful ‘Saving Mr Banks’ movie but if you haven’t yet - get on it! Here’s a nice interview from Stiles and Drewe that gives you some insight into their writing process for adapting Mary Poppins for the stage. We didn’t even talk about it in the podcast but it’s safe to say the original Matthew Bourne choreography for Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious is out of this world! Stiles and Drewe have had a varied back catalogue of musicals, but there are some real hidden gems there! Check out their website to see some of their work. So it’s Temper, Temper versus Playing the Game. Who wins in your opinion? Today we establish that Tommy is Jonathan Creek. Any mysterious crimes you need solved? He’s your man. If you’re around the West End this fall then pop those umbrellas and float on down to the Prince Edward. Jimi will see you there! Charlie Stemp is an exciting man on the musical theatre sphere. Here’s a fun interview with upcoming West End Poppins, Zizi Strallen (equally iconic!) Are you ready for the Jim and Tomic Musical coming this season? With the release of the original "Mary Poppins" film in 1964, P.L. Travers' practically perfect (and masterfully shady) magical nanny became a Disney legend and Julie Andrews became a film icon. Fifty-four years later, Disney (finally) returns to London's 17 Cherry Tree Lane with "Mary Poppins Returns," a "requel" in the spirit of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." In this episode, the SSN Crew reviews and compares both films and their handlings of their characters, music, and animation/VFX - as well as whether or P.L. Travers' grandkids violated her will by approving a sequel! In this new podcast series, recovering screenwriter (and Mr. Monitor) Jay Rosen and myself will indulge in passion for the movies by looking at them through the lens of compliance. Jay is a contemporary movie fan and I am more of a classic movie maven so we present a well-rounded view of the movie fandom. So if you want to indulge in your love for the movies with two guys who are passionate about Hollywood and get some ideas for your compliance program, this is the podcast series for you. Today we look at the classic favorite, Mary Poppins Returns. Some of the highlights include:  Ø  Can you successfully remake a beloved classic?Ø How do eggs come into play in Hollywood and beyond?Ø Where is Dick Van Dyke when you need him?Ø Does the cinematography still work some 50 years after the original? Ø Why you need to watch the original Mary Poppins before seeing Mary Poppins Returns. Ø  Jay feels that while Mary Poppins Returns had the support and investment of the Walt Disney Company and it faithfully tried to recreate the original, the artistic returns fall short of the sum of its parts. The Compliance takeaways:1.    Document Document Document-the parable from the share certificates to save the house on Cherry Tree Lane.2.    Change in corporate culture needed-Mr. Dawes Jr. (Dick Van Dyke) fired Bank President William Wilkins.3.    Tone at the Top-As bank President, William Wilkins had taken the bank far afield from its mission and core values.4.    If you lack the passion, you may fail.  5.    You cannot simply follow the road map, but you must design your compliance program to be fresh, as you are taking this journey for the first time.  Not that you must re-invent the wheel, but you need to keep your colleagues and employees engaged on their journey. Or was it a remake? We discuss the film’s classifications as well as its Oscar chances in our spoiler section, and until then, we’re focused on reviews of the production values & performances in our lengthy non-spoiler first half. So it’s two reviews for the price of one as we follow our Oscar Sprint Profile format for Mary Poppins Returns! We research a host of tough questions in the production profile as well, like what took this sequel so long? How do the critical numbers stack up with other Oscar films? And why do so many of these names & places seem so familiar? For of course, there were many links to the original. But this film also shares a lot in common with other films we’ve reviewed recently, notably one involving muppets. Our non-spoiler review goes a bit long as we debate some big picture story movements before we decide whether this is a best picture contender. Then we break down some of the most notable objections to the film in our spoiler section in less of a recap and more of an analysis of the bests and worsts on Cherry Tree Lane. Although we did fight a lot during the review, we also fought for common ground by the end of the episode. If you enjoyed this feisty back & forth review, you’ll love the rest of our 2018 Oscar Sprint Profile Series, and there’s also a bunch of Movie Events and retrospectives to enjoy along the way.
