I'm Josh Cooperman and this is Convo by Design with a conversation about building an absolutely exceptional design brand. Christopher Peacock is a truly exceptional creative with a rich history in creating some of the most extraordinary wood cabinetry in the industry today. There is a difference between crafting a product and building a brand. Peacock molded his eponymous brand in the US from humble beginnings and a keen understanding for what he wanted. And he's going to share that story and insight here. Christopher launched his firm in 1992. Christopher Peacock Cabinetry was built on the premise that wooden cabinetry should be beautiful and enduring. But when Peacock put his name on it, there was a greater sense of purpose. That is what I find so interesting here. This is the piece that is missing from much of what we. See and hear these days in the trades and in the media surrounding design and architecture. For many years now, the idea of luxury design has been inextricable tied to big, expensive and for lack of a better word, “extra”. I don't think good design has to be big, expensive or “extra”. I think good, no, great design is about the nature of the work and manner in which the work is tied to the individual for whom it's created. Look at art. A painting can sell for millions of dollars but at the end of the day, what is it…really. A few dollars worth of canvas and paint. But the work speaks. Fashion, same thing. A few dollars of fabric crafted into something extraordinary. It's the art that goes into the craftsmanship. That is what makes design so special. And that is why Christopher's sorry is so special. And why I am so pleased to share it with you. Designer Resources ThermaSol - Redefining the modern shower experience. Episode 271 featuring Mitch Altman Moya Living - Beautiful, durable powder coated kitchen, bath & outdoor kitchen cabinetry Design Hardware - A stunning and vast collection of jewelry for the home! Thank you Christopher for taking the time to share your story. Thank you CXD partners and sponsors; ThermaSol, Moya Living and Design Hardware for your continued support. And thank you for taking the time every week to share some time together and hear the stories behind sublime design. Until next week, remember why you do what you do and for whom you do it, be well and take today first.

Engel & Cabrera Present Boroughs & 'Burbs, the Real Estate Review
Christopher Peacock is a very big deal. I thought he was just a kitchen designer. He is a lot more than that. He is an international brand with 11 showrooms across the USA, Cannes, France and Jakarta, Indonesia. According to a New York Times feature on the business his company installs over 210 kitchens and 100 or so mud rooms, bathrooms, dressing rooms, libraries, wine tasting rooms and butler's pantries. They credit Peacock for the now 20-year-old trend in white kitchens. We sat down with Christopher for a frank zoom conversation about his brand, the industry, and the impact of kitchen design on real estate in the New York tri-state area.HISTORY: Christopher began his career in London before stops at the Boston Design Center and the Architects and Design Building in New York before opening a showroom in Greenwich in 1992. We'lI want to hear about the evolution of the brand over these 40 years, from man designing to multinational presence. BRAND DIFFERENTIATION: What is “hand-crafted British cabinetry” and what makes a Peacock design special? What's special about a $185,000 kitchen? SUSTAINABILITY: Let's talk materials and sustainability. The world has changed since he began in the business and a great deal more attention is being paid to where we source our woods and the sustainability of old-growth forests. How has this affected the industry, both in terms of what customers are demanding and how you're responding? THE SHOWROOMS: Why is it important to have 9 showrooms in the USA and two overseas? What is the best way to experience the brand to appreciate the difference? HIGH POINTS: You mention working for the Clintons private residence in Chappaqua, NY. What was that like? I imagine they need a lot of bookcases. Maybe a special cabinet for Bill's saxophone? BUILDERS AND ARCHITECTS: How do you work with architects and builders. I would imagine that most architects say I don't need a separate designer for my kitchen and baths. How does a specialist like yourself work with builders and architects? TRENDS: How is the business changing since the pandemic began? How are tastes changing generally? ECONOMICS: Let's talk about what makes a kitchen or bath a “good value” or an “investment” in the home.10 items Christopher Peacock said clients have asked for but don't often use:- Pot-filling faucet - Pantry dishwasher - Pantry refrigerator- Kitchen desk - Trash compactor - Large microwave - Rangetop grill - Two-tier island countertops - Large island - Appliance garage10 items Christopher Peacock said we don't think to ask for, but should consider:- Refrigerator and Freezer Drawers- Two dishwashers - Warming drawers - Small microwave - Bookshelves - Tray storage - Roll-out drawers - Message center - Marble countertops - Wood countertops

A series of stories ranging from two-page narrative excerpts to 90+ page novellas, The Handsome Monk and Other Stories (Columbia University Press, 2019), translated by Columbia PhD student Christopher Peacock, with a contribution from Lauran Hartley, masterfully introduces the work of contemporary Tibetan author Tsering Döndrup. One of the most popular and critically acclaimed figures of Modern Tibetan literature of the post-Mao period, Tsering Döndrup is known for his earthy humor and his unflinchingly satirical portrayals of Tibetan life. Resisting the urge to romanticize Tibetan life, Tsering Döndrup's stories relentlessly satirize both those in power—including clerics and government officials—and those without. Stories describe emergent social problems like gambling and long-standing folk institutions of violent feuds alike. The narratives compiled in The Handsome Monk could only be written by someone intimately familiar with Tibetan life over the last fifty years, and by placing many of his stories together, this volume evocatively portrays resilience and the problems of Tibetan culture. Timothy Thurston is Lecturer in Chinese Studies at the University of Leeds. His research examines language at the nexus of tradition and modernity in China's Tibet.

Growing vegetables from seed is cheap and much easier that many people think. In this episode Jill is joined by her husband Noah to plant vegetable seeds, indoors in preparation for spring. Jill and Noah chat as they work and explain how it’s done. Next Jill talks to TV host and vegan chef Jason Wrobel about his new cookbook Eaternity. Jason shares healthy eating tips and some delicious recipes. Then Jill interviews Chinese medicine practitioner Christopher Peacock who has a special focus on treating the LGBTQ community. Christopher tells Jill that transgender people have high rates of attempted suicide and very specific medical needs. Jill asks Christopher how we can support this community to get the care they need. Finally Jill answers a listener’s question about how to find a qualified acupuncturist.
Did you know that LGBTQ people are the most likely targets of hate crimes in the USA? They are twice as likely to be targeted as African Americans and nearly a fifth of the 5,462 hate crimes reported to the FBI in 2014, were because of the target’s sexual orientation, or, in some cases, their perceived orientation. And we believe that that’s the tip of the iceberg because a lot of crimes against LGBT people go unreported. This episode was recorded at the CBS Radio studios in New York, City just days after the mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Jill invited back to the show several people who’ve been on GCH before to hear their reaction to this hate crime and ask them for their thoughts on how we can all play a role in supporting and protecting LGBTQ people. Dr. Frank Spinelli looked after patients during the AIDS crisis and tells us this crime makes him feel similarly helpless. He calls for meaningful gun control in the light of this tragedy. Dr. Maryanne Travaglione says she is heartbroken and explains the importance of gay bars and clubs as a safe space for to the LGBTQ community. Christopher Peacock was last on the show to talk about meeting the medical needs of transgender people. He returns to the show to talk about how this crime has affected the community he serves. Together the panel agrees that as society has become more tolerant, people who hate have become more polarized.
