Even before the end of the ceasefire in Gaza, Israeli attacks on the West Bank were escalating in 2025. By Feb. 5, 70 Palestinians were reported killed this year alone. Imagine stepping into the world of a special education teacher who navigates the same trials and triumphs at home with her own autistic son as she does with her students. Meet Darcy Lippman, a remarkable mother and educator who joins me, Tony Mantor, to unravel the rich tapestry of her experiences with her son.Through Darcy's eyes, we traverse the early days of Jiren's life, confronting developmental delays with a cocktail of love, patience, and early interventions. Darcy doesn't just share her journey; she gifts us with the wisdom of her dual perspective, shedding light on how professional expertise in the classroom intersects with the emotional realities of home. Our discourse ventures into the intricate dance of "masking" and societal perceptions that often leave autistic children and their needs in the shadows. This episode is an invitation for you to grab a front-row seat as we navigate the landscape of autism education, from the disparities in services for verbal autistic children to the enlightening experiences of sitting on both sides of the special education table. In the powerful narrative of Darcy's life, we also celebrate the extraordinary role of alternative therapies, like the magic of horse therapy, in fostering communication and emotional regulation for children like Jiren. As we wrap up our discussion, we touch upon the critical role of community support, the balance needed in parenting, and the confidence to embrace your own unique path. This episode isn't just a conversation; it's a beacon of hope and affirmation for anyone who loves a child with a disability, emphasizing that while the journey may be challenging, it's also replete with moments of profound joy and growth. Feeling anxious lately? I don't know about you…but my mental health went down the toilet in 2020. I've always been anxious by nature but since turning 40 - which was followed closely by the pandemic - I've had to make my mental health more of a priority and I know I'm not alone: according to the world health organization, global prevalence of anxiety and depression increased by a whopping 25% in the first year of the pandemic. So, um, maybe we should talk about it? It's so hard to tease out which feelings are totally normal and expected given the current state of our world and which are a signal that something more serious is going on. And, what to do about it. First things first: I've gotta say it, TALK TO YOUR DOC…but I also know that when something goes wrong, so many of us turn to the internet for answers. And it's the wild west out there, with all manner of opinions on what is causing our anxiety…and what to do about it. If you've ever seen a post on regulating your nervous system, activating your vagus nerve and eating to beat anxiety…you might want to listen to this episode. I'm speaking with Dr Nicole Lippman-Barile PhD, clinical psychologist, to talk about anxiety through the lens of wellness. I started following her a while back because she's very good at calling BS on all the things wellness gets wrong about mental health. And there is some pretty shady advice being doled out on the internet about the role of diet and anxiety, the gut brain connection and the microbiome…you name it, so I wanted to ask Dr Nicole to set the record straight about some common myths as well as evidence-based strategies for improving your mental health. About Nicole Lippman-Barile PhD: Dr. Nicole Barile is a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in the intensive outpatient treatment of anxiety and mood disorders. She is extensively trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as well as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and utilizes elements of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Eastern philosophy. On this episode we chat about: The difference between a feeling of anxiety and an anxiety disorder Whether there's been an increase of anxiety disorder in the general population or not What we actually know about the gut-brain connection Is there any good evidence that diet CAN cure a diagnosed anxiety disorder? The difference between gut-derived serotonin and brain-derived serotonin. How the pandemic made Nicole realize she had to un-learn the nutrition misinformation she was taught in school What the RECENT research really says about seed oils and inflammation Why individual differences need to be considered when applying mental health or nutrition solutions: If something works for an influencer, does that mean it'll work for you? The role of therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Exposure Therapy in the effective treatment of anxiety Do lifestyle changes like exercise, mindfulness, and social support aid therapy in the treatment of mental illness symptoms? A solution that ISN'T talked about a lot online: how to problem solve what may be causing your anxiety … and approach the things you've been avoiding Support the Pod!

In today's episode of Psych Talk I chat with Dr. Nicole Lippman-Barile, PhD, a licensed clinical psychologist, about the connection between dietary patterns and mental health. Dr. Nicole discusses what the research states about the connection between nutrition and mental health and highlights the differences between the claims we see on social media and what the literature actually supports. Dr. Nicole discusses foods and nutrients that have evidence of bettering our mental health, as well as make it worse, in addition to highlighting the multitude of factors that play a role in the connection between nutrition and mental health. Candace Nicholas-Lippman recently joined host Elias in the cave! She is reprising her lead role as Janelle in the second season of Starz' highly acclaimed musical-drama series, "Blindspotting," alongside Jasmine Cephas Jones. The series is an adaptation of the film of the same name, created and starred in by Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs. In the second season, the story picks up six months after the events of the original film. Janelle, played by Candace Nicholas-Lippman, remains at the center of the narrative. She is portrayed as an unapologetic, multifaceted, and loyal individual. Janelle embodies the archetype of a best friend who is willing to go to great lengths and confront uncomfortable truths when necessary. Her character holds immense value both on and off the screen, serving as a representation of black girls, brown girls, and women. Season one of "Blindspotting" received widespread critical acclaim, with reviewers praising the show's successful transition from film to television. Critics highlighted the series' confident voice and commended the new characters for exploring similar themes while introducing fresh perspectives. Overall, Candace Nicholas-Lippman's portrayal of Janelle in the second season of "Blindspotting" continues to captivate audiences with its authentic representation and compelling storytelling.
