It’s hard for Cory Procter to not have a good time. In between his motivational and leadership speaker events, spending time with his family and playing the drums, this former NFL player for the Dallas Cowboys, the Miami Dolphins and the Detroit Lions, helps others lock into their own power. He talks about his career as an NFL superstar and what he learned while in the trenches. He shares the transition from football to redefine himself as a mentor and coach for the next generation. Cory breaks down common behaviors that drive excellence, and how to use emotions as a tool. Key Takeaways [3:15] Cory spent six years in the National Football League as an interior offensive lineman, splitting his time between the Detroit Lions, Dallas Cowboys, and Miami Dolphins. [3:30] Cory applied his love and knowledge of human behavior and psychology to all areas of life, including in business and leadership. One of his key motivations is to help other athletes learn how to invest their money wisely. [7:38] Our results reflect where our attention is. When you cut the noise and distractions out of your life and focus on success, you see new opportunities that may have been previously out of sight. [11:46] Great leaders choose carefully who they bring into their team. They build a network around them of others that are high value, rooting for the greater good of the mission, and humble. [13:57] Cory works with athletes on developing a secondary career, passion or hobby so they have something to fall back on when transitioning out of a career as an athlete. [16:50] Great leaders know how to lead, but also know when to let others shine and pitch in. Letting go of control is equated with power. [20:23] Faith is an important part of Cory’s foundation. It provides him with trust in the bigger picture, and allows him to take blessings, fortune and fame with humility and gratitude. [26:44] Leaders are multidimensional. In a given day, there will be many mindsets and perspectives to deal with and the more knowledge you have, the better prepared you are to handle all of them. [30:41] Show up every day with consisenty and grit. Cory recommends finding something you are passionate about, and sticking with it for a long time. Play the long game. [34:29] Identify your own values. It’s important to have emotions, but not let them dictate our actions and next steps. We want emotional leaders, but we shouldn’t let our emotions be detrimental to success. Quotes “I had a great work ethic, but I had to teach myself the why and the how.” “If you want to be the leader, you have to cut out the distractions and focus your attention.” “It’s a conscious decision to focus on your goal.” “As leaders, we need to choose wisely who we bring in, and then develop those people.” “We can’t handle everything, and we can utilize other people’s strength and gifts.” “Faith lets humility into leadership.” “When you win a battle, you graduate to bigger battles.” “Leaders are indicators, not dictators.” “When we are overflowing with information, we give in a massive way to others.” “The safest approach is the fastest way to obscurity.” Project RELO TLP #55 Playing it safe? “You just keep busting your butt and showing up, and good things are going to happen. I had this insane work ethic and the ability to work past everyone else. It raised everyone else's game, and if they couldn’t do it they just fell off.” There are thousands of retired professional athletes, many who struggle with the transition into their next careers. A big part of my Make Your Mark podcast is to shine a spotlight on those who are making a positive impact after they leave their sport, and today’s guest, Cory Procter, is a superb example of that, as his story of becoming a truly inspirational speaker and financial manager will inspire you. “If any athletes are listening to this right now this is important. So many guys hang onto the dream. I’m not saying not to, but when you hang onto the dream you will pass up so many other opportunities because you’re holding onto something that will potentially happen. (This is what I tell guys who are either playing right now or holding out ) Work on your side hustle, work on your side passion, work on something that you want to do after football is over, because at some point it’s going to be over whether it’s now or in 10 years and you’re going to want to do something with your life and us as men we identify with our work so much that when our work is taken from our lives we have identity struggles. So work on that side passion right now.” Cory has been a hard worker, a grinder, since he was a young boy, seeing the results pay off eventually into an NFL career. But the big reward for Cory (and his audience) has been his message of making yourself accountable for your actions, that you truly control your outcome, and treating everyone with respect can earn you a spot on your team (sports, corporate, and anywhere else) that may have otherwise gone to someone else. “When I went to training camp I made sure to introduce myself to the entire training staff; equipment managers and the rest of the staff, not just the head coaches, and at the end of the camp I thank them all. Then an equipment guy tells the coaches ‘We need Cory Procter on our team’! That’s not something to be taken lightly because you are having an impact on every place you enter. If you come in and you’re respectful, happy and uplifting while showing gratitude, you’re going leave imprints wherever you go. You never know where those connections might lead.” This was one of my most enjoyable podcasts, as we could have gone on for hours. Cory is such a genuine guy, calls it like it is, and treats us, his audience, with the understanding that with just a few words, we can be inspired to greater things. We talk about being a Grizzly, earning the respect of Bill Parcells, and playing drums in metal band! Give this one a listen...it will fly by, as our conversation was just that, with plenty of advice for athletes and others spread throughout. Happy listening! What up, Get Up Nation? My name is Ben Biddick, the Host of the Get Up Nation Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball Player and CEO of Lurong Living, Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with former National Football League Player Cory Procter. He was a member of three teams in the NFL: the Detroit Lions, Dallas Cowboys, and the Miami Dolphins. After 6 years in the league he suffered a Patellar Tendon rupture in his left knee which ended his career in the NFL and led to the phenomenal work he is doing now to empower, inspire, and champion people to become their very best with relentless grit, endurance, and perseverance. Cory recently joined Mark Pattison in climbing Mount Kilimanjaro as part of Mark’s Summit Project and Chris Long’s Waterboys organization. Every season, Green Beret and former Seattle Seahawk Nate Boyer joins Chris Long in challenging combat veterans and NFL alumni to join him in conquering Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro. Cory conquered it even after losing vision in one eye due to altitude sickness. He is a phenomenal example of resilience and speaks frequently about how to possess the habits that create greatness as a keynote speaker. This podcast highlights the power of human beings, the importance and value of our closest relationships, and how people can accomplish amazing impact no matter where they are in their lives.
