Last year, while attending the Georgia Brewers Conference, I heard a DEI presentation from Isaiah Smith, the CEO of Our Culture Brewing Co, Fenwick Broyard, vice president of culture at Creature Comforts Brewing Co., and Tracy Bardugon, then a taproom manager at Fire Maker Brewing who now works at Elsewhere Brewing. You might think once you've heard one DEI talk, you've heard them all, but I found this one to stand out because it detailed the importance of creating an inclusive environment before injecting diversity into it. Instead of focusing on bringing in diversity first, make sure your brewery is inclusive and ready to accept more diverse employees. The trio also detailed during the talk about the value of collaborating beyond the brewhouse—connecting different departments within a brewery with each other to share knowledge and best practices. Since then, I haven't looked at brewery collaborations the same. What's so valuable about this idea is that breweries in planning like Our Culture can benefit from years of experience from a brewery like Creature Comforts, one of the biggest craft breweries in Georgia. I was excited to learn how their ideas became action—in May 2023 Creature Comforts created a brewing residency program where the Our Culture team was partnered with a counterpart at Creature Comforts. I recently had a chance to join both breweries in Athens where they shared their experience of creating this partnership and how it was beneficial to both parties. First, you'll hear from Jossette Footman-Smith, co-owner and head of operations and community engagement at Our Culture Brewing, and Issac Smith, co-owner and head of brewing operations, as they share how Our Culture got their start. Then, you'll hear from Isaiah Smith and Creature Comforts' Fenwick Broyard about the residency program, and what they learned along the way. We also dive into the story behind their collaboration beer, “Seeds Take Up the Soil,” a sweet potato Ale that is a great representation of the beers Our Culture is planning to bring to market, focused on highlighting flavors of the African diaspora.

Craft beer is more than just a beverage, it's a culture driver. Each brewery has its own personality that's expressed through product and place, be it a neighborhood watering hole or concert venue or the place to play cornhole with your kids while you enjoy a pint. Resident Culture in Charlotte, NC, founded in 2017 by Amanda and Phillip McLamb, has a modern, welcoming style, in beer and design and the brewery gathering spaces, and it's quickly become one of the hottest breweries in the country. It's already received accolades that include “Top 10 Best New Breweries in the World” in 2018, one of VinePair's "25 Best Breweries in the Country" in 2022, and that same year, Amanda was the recipient of The VinePair 50 and The Charlotte Business Journal's 40 Under 40. When I'm in Charlotte and walk into either location, it's evident that there is something special happening at Resident Culture, and the brewing of seriously delicious beer is just the beginning.
Episode 78 this Saturday, Trouble Man, with Manhattan Beach Hazy IPA, which was kindly provided by our pals at @culturebrewingco_la. Mr. T is a neighborhood fixer. He's cool, smooth, dresses like a champ and takes no crap from nobody. When a couple of gangsters try to set him up, you can imagine how that goes for them. It also rocks a fantastic film score from Marvin Gaye, so you know this one doesn't miss. We paired it up with a local beer teeming with fruity flavor, which only made sense, because Trouble Man takes place all over the Los Angeles area. Culture Brewing really nails it with this hazy IPA. Bring your finest suit and favorite beverage for this on. Thanks for listening! Check out our website SUBSCRIBE: to the show on Apple Podcast or Google Play. The Drinking Partners, especially Ed, excitedly welcome Anthony “Sizzle” Perry, the founder of Crafted Culture Brewing Company in Columbus, Ohio. This interview sets itself apart from the opening segment as Sizzle explains how he “accidentally” fell into brewing after a stint as a fill-in bartender, which led to various jobs across the brewing industry, including as a delivery man. Or, as Ed suggests. Mr. Perry is, “The Drinking Partners meets Will Smith in the Pursuit of Happiness.” But Sizzle had a marketing strategy of his own: “If you want to gain yards in this game, go where they ain’t.” He presented his idea to the COO of the company where he worked as the top salesman, yet his proposal was brushed off as nonsensical. From there, he decided to pursue brewing on his own, starting first as a home brewer. With creativity and a focus on bringing soul into brewing, Mr. Perry paired up with a lifetime friend and a professional brewer and opened Crafted Culture, Central Ohio’s first Black-owned brewery. Along with the brewery, Mr. Perry wants to focus on #beerthechange, a budding nonprofit that he hopes will help give back to diverse communities. Give this interview a full listen and enjoy the witty banter and deep business insights that have Ed feeling envious. Find more about Crafted Culture: www.craftedculturebrew.com

Dawn Barry is President & Co-founder of LunaDNA and former executive of the $40 billion DNA sequencing leader Illumina, which also hails from San Diego. LunaDNA incentivizes the sharing of health and DNA data for research by rewarding people for sharing the data they already own while contributing to medical research and discovery that saves lives. What really sets LunaDNA apart is that people who share their data are able to get shares of ownership in the company, something that’s never been done before. What really sets LunaDNA apart is that people who share their data are able to get shares of ownership in the company, something that’s never been done before. In the last year, Dawn co-founded LunaDNA, which is backed by Illumina Ventures, among other investors. Before cofounding LunaDNA, Dawn - who was was named San Diego Business Journal’s 2017 Business Woman of the Year - rose through the ranks at Illumina, from sales specialists to Vice President of Applied Genomics. There, she integrated market development strategies with product and business model innovation to accelerate the application of genomics in medicine and personal healthcare. Hailing from rural Berlin, Connecticut, Dawn had humble beginnings as a carpenter’s daughter. She grew up surrounded by plants and animals, which sparked her interest in nature and biology. From an early age, she had the notion that if you take care of nature, it will, in return, take care of you. Dawn, who studied biology at the University of Vermont, became interested in genetics via her fascination with the organization and blueprint nature of it. The idea of better understanding the blueprint of all living things, and being enabled to become more predictive with that information, was something that intrigued her early on. Dawn began her post-grad career doing working for Michael Snyder, a renowned genomics professor at the Yale Genome Analysis Center in Connecticut, and then went on to work at a startup in New Haven called Genaissance, where she learned about pharmacogenomics. From there, she earned her MBA from the University of Connecticut, marrying both her passions of business and science. Listen in as Dawn talks about her journey from humble beginnings in rural Connecticut to helping lead an innovative genetics trailblazer in San Diego. Dawn enjoys the great offerings near the Solana Beach-based LunaDNA office including: Tacos at Las Olas in Cardiff Craft brew, specifically the Mosaic IPA, at Culture Brewing in Solana Beach (and Carruth Cellars for wine) Coffee at Lofty Coffee in Solana Beach Keep up with Dawn on social media: LinkedIn Twitter - @DawnBarryDNA
If you take a skittish reporter. Subtract a Spider-Man. Add an alien symbiote that takes over said reporter but Spider-Man is still not in this movie, does it still stand a chance? We grabbed some coldies and bounced to the theater to see our buddy Tom Hardy figure out if an all out CGI Venom fest movie can work. The beverages for this episode were from Culture Brewing which included the American Pils and a Coffee IPA which was so good it made us think we were crazy with an alien parasitic organism.
Ready to ruin all your fond memories of the wholesome, always good natured Muppets? Come along with us while we drink -TWO- beers this episode compliments of Culture Brewing (https://culturebrewingco.com) and talk about how the puppets have us dialing up our therapists.
It's been a minute, Charlotte. Our last 1-2 months have been filled with a new house, a new dog, holidays and most notably, no podcasts. We know. Wahhh. But... Weeeee'rrrrreeeee baaaaaaack. We have a ton of great podcasts scheduled for February, but in the meantime, we didn't want to let January go by (barely!) without dropping some content. And by content, we mean THREE NEW EPISODES! AND WE'RE DROPPING THEM ALL AT THE SAME TIME!!!!! ALL CAPS!!!!!!!!!! And the reason we didn't want to let January go by? It's our one year anniversary of the pod! Sort of. We think. Close enough. Time flies when you're sharing mics and beers! This three-pack is quite the mix to say the least. We've got: 1. Phillip and Amanda McLamb, owners of Resident Culture Brewing Company. New baby, new brewery, both growing like crazy. NBD. As you can see in the thumbnail, we celebrated Jake's birthday and the podcast's. In that order. 2. Lauren Levine and Ali Washburn from the Margarita Confessionals podcast. Wait, what? Yeah. They had us on their *fire emoji* podcast back in 2016 before our show existed, so we thought, hey that was sort of a date night, right? No? What the heck, we're adding it here (because #content). 3. Episode 0. Right after Hygge's very own, Garrett Tichy, named "Date Night with Jake and Page" as one of his co-working company's inaugural podcast residency members last January, the three of us taped a rambling, beautiful, incoherent, amazing, awful podcast. We've been staring at it for a year...and now it's time to release it to the world. Apologies in advance, Garrett. We can’t thank Phillip, Amanda, Lauren, Ali and Garrett enough for joining us on this episode, and as always, big thanks to ole' "Garre' Bear," Hygge and Richard Brooke for having us as a member of their inaugural Hygge Podcast Residency! Please subscribe, share and comment on this episode. Past shows can be found on jakeandpage.com, iTunes and wherever you get your podcasts. We live stream most episodes on Facebook (Page Crawford Fox 46) and videos are posted to youtube.com/jakefehling. Please keep the conversation going on social media using the hashtag #datenightclt. Thanks for listening!
We are on location from Resident Culture Brewing in the Plaza Midwood neighborhood of Charlotte, NC. We sat down with head brewer, Chris “Tropes” Tropeano, to talk about this exciting new brewery. If you haven’t visited this gem, be sure you stop by as soon as possible. The post Episode 197- Resident Culture Brewing appeared first on Cheers Charlotte Radio | Craft Beer and Homebrew Podcast.
San Diego, California: commonly known as one of the best craft beer destinations on the planet. This was the Pubcast’s first trip to “America’s Finest City,” and it certainly won’t be the last! In the episode, Kristine Baker – the creator and chief organizer of the Women’s Craft Beer Collective – hosted us at Culture Brewing’s Solana Beach location (just 25 minutes north of San Diego), where she gave us a rundown of the region’s craft beer scene, and the strong role that women are taking in craft brewing. We covered everything from wet-hopping to the Great American Beer Festival to macramé, and drank some of Culture’s award-winning beer in the process. Conducting the interview while sitting atop kegs and the rest of the equipment in the brewhouse was certainly a unique setting for an otherwise picturesque SoCal beachside interview.
In this episode we chat with Jill Davidson, President of the San Diego Brewers Guild about the rich craft brewing history, great breweries, neighbourhoods and beer events to explore in this dynamic and welcoming region.
