Craft beer is more than just a beverage, it's a culture driver. Each brewery has its own personality that's expressed through product and place, be it a neighborhood watering hole or concert venue or the place to play cornhole with your kids while you enjoy a pint. Resident Culture in Charlotte, NC, founded in 2017 by Amanda and Phillip McLamb, has a modern, welcoming style, in beer and design and the brewery gathering spaces, and it's quickly become one of the hottest breweries in the country. It's already received accolades that include “Top 10 Best New Breweries in the World” in 2018, one of VinePair's "25 Best Breweries in the Country" in 2022, and that same year, Amanda was the recipient of The VinePair 50 and The Charlotte Business Journal's 40 Under 40. When I'm in Charlotte and walk into either location, it's evident that there is something special happening at Resident Culture, and the brewing of seriously delicious beer is just the beginning.

Kevin Patricio is the co-founder and CEO of Basqueland Brewing. Kevin emigrated from the United States to Spain in 2011 with his family and now resides in San Sebastian in the Basque Country. Kevin's professional career started in New York City at Food & Wine Magazine in 1998. After six years at the magazine he left to pursue a career in the kitchen. He continued to consult for media and spirit companies until the kitchen took him completely. He trained in NYC classics like The Red Cat, Blue Hill, as well as Arzak in San Sebastian. It wasn't until he was running a kitchen in San Sebastian in 2011 that craft beer came knocking. “In the USA, I took the availability of craft beer for granted. Almost everywhere you go, you're never far from good beer. That all changed when I got to the Basque Country in 2011. The craft beer culture was pre-embryonic. I really wanted to complete the experience for customers in and out of the restaurant which in this case meant having quality, local beer.” He opened Basqueland Brewery in 2015. The brewery is one of the largest independent breweries in Spain and has been named Best Brewery Spain four times in five years (2017, 2019, 2021, 2022) by the Concurso Nacional de Cerveceros, Fira Poblenou; as well as Best Brewery two years in a row (2021-2022) in the international competition, Barcelona Beer Challenge. It can be said that Basqueland is best known for their IPAs, from West Coast to DDH and session to DIPA. The team takes great care with all styles from its crisp, clean Santa Clara Helles Lager to massive pastry stouts and zingy sours. “We strive to make the best beer we can in whatever style.” Basqueland has recently opened Basqueland Izakaia in San Sebastian–a small tavern with Asian bar food and organic wine. It has become a beacon for Asian food in San Sebastian. Kevin hosts guest-chef pop-ups which have included Andy Ricker of Pok Pok and wine guest Nico Boise, the sommelier from Restaurante Elkano. On this episode, Patrick joins host Mitchell Davis and discusses how as an American he's making a splash on Spain's craft beer scene, the culinary treasures of the Basque country, and why the five French mother sauces are “a little dusty and on the shelf”. One thing about Boise: we love our local craft beer. But with more than 20 breweries and counting in the Treasure Valley, the options can be kind of overwhelming. What's the best place to grab a pint and watch a game? How about the most delicious meal and IPA combo? And where can you get snobby and enjoy the subtleties of your next barrel-aged stout? Today, lead producer Frankie Barnhill is getting the scoop from contributor Heath Druzin, who — when he's not covering extremist politics — can be found at Barbarian Brewing. This week Joel talks through his Annual Review awards that he virtually handed at just over a month ago! From Best Flight Board and Best Taproom View, to Best IPA and Best Brewery, he talks through all his decisions! Joel has visited over 700 breweries across 44 states plus Washington D.C. and has been able to make connections with many amazing individuals because of his travels. He is currently living on the road with his family, constantly “exploring more content and doing extensive research” (which just means visiting breweries and drinking beer)! The goal of Brewery Travels is to provide more information about craft beer scenes from around the country and shine a light on some of the excellent individual breweries that call these cities home. From Portland, Maine to San Diego, California. Austin, Texas to Duluth, Minnesota. The bright lights of New York City to the farmland of rural Iowa. Brewery Travels plans to run the gauntlet of locations, providing in-depth information on as many places as possible. With episodes coming out weekly on Thursdays, Brewery Travels is where you can get your fix if you enjoy a craft beer or traveling. Cheers! It's that time of year again - we've reached the extremely prestigious Brew Marsh Awards. No one has time for the stuffy old men who determine Canada's athlete of the year anymore so make sure you join Chris Hofley, Michaela Schreiter and Matt Robinson as we do this up right - by arguing about it over a bunch of pints. This year the Brew Marsh Awards also feature categories for the Best Beer of the Year and Best Brewery of the Year surrounding the meat of the issue. Later on, of course, talk turns to some of Canada's top athletic performers which kicks up quite a debate over pros vs amateurs, men vs women, everyone on earth vs McDavid and so much more. How do you measure guys and girls who get to do this every night against those who have to get it done on their specific day every 4 years? We don't know. But we'll try here. Let's rack a pint and argue over who was the most awesome! Follow Michaela Schreiter on social media @Schreids. Follow Chris Hofley on social media @ChrisHofley on Twitter and @HofOnSports on IG. On the heels of the Federal Election, we begin with a look at the Electoral process here in Canada. We speak with Sharon Sommerville from “Fair Vote Canada” about our current “first-past-the-post” system, and look at what alternatives could be better a fit, moving forward. Next, it's another edition of “Ask The Doctor” with Dr. Craig Jenne, Infectious Disease Specialist from the University of Calgary. As always, Dr. Jenne takes the time to answer COVID-19, as sent in by our listeners. The housing market continues to trend “hot” across the country. We speak with a Home Inspection specialist – for his thoughts on the Liberal Government's “Home Buyers Bill of Rights” program that they campaigned on. We hear details on how it could be a huge benefit to those currently in the market for a new home. And finally, it's a real “feather in the cap” for Calgary's Craft Brewery Industry, and one brewery in particular. We speak with the Brewmaster and co-owner of “Establishment Brewing” on their recently announced win of “Canada's Best Brewery” for the second straight year. This week, I am talking with Chris Tkach, Owner, and Founder of Idle Hands Craft Ales. Idle Hands is a Belgian and German-inspired Craft Brewery located in Malden, MA, and is celebrating its 10th anniversary during Oktoberfest. What started as a simple homebrewing kit from his uncle for his 21st birthday quickly became a passion for creating craft beers for others to enjoy. Not only does Chris appreciate the art behind beer making, but his wife Grace is also a beer connoisseur and plays the significant role of Idle Hands Chief Right Hand. While Chris manages all beer-related functions of the brewery, Grace takes care of all “right-brained activities, including marketing and people-related fun.” Today, Chris shares what the past ten years have been like in the beer industry and the many changes along the way, including the opportunity to open their taproom. We also discuss the challenges faced during Covid-19 and how Idle Hands was well equipped to pivot along the way. Thank you to Urban Family Brewing for letting us hang out with them! We had an awesome time. Urban Family is a whole new brewery from when it opened boasting the same great name. We talked about Andy’s journey in taking it over with Isaac, essentially rebooting the brewery. We talked beer (of course), distribution, brewing, community, and creativity. From their website: We’re a small craft brewery located in the Magnolia neighborhood of Seattle. We have an eclectic focus on creating beer and strive constantly for innovation. You may not see the same beer every time you visit but we try to utilize fresh ingredients, complex yeast strains, and interesting hop profiles. We were founded on the principles of creating something as a family. Working together to make beer that represents who we are, and what we love. We may not all be related, but family is what you make it. They did not brew the same beer twice in 2017! Furthermore, we ate cheese together. Also, Patrick is a marine biologist, he wants a centrifuge, and he hates the music you listened to in high school.
