I go because it allows me to speak in person with people I would not usually get to talk with. This year was no exception. Days before I headed to the airport, I got a text message asking, “Would you want to speak with Ricky Williams?” The answer was yes! I've been waiting to interview Williams for some time now. Most people know his story. A Heisman Trophy winner, Williams would be selected #5 by the New Orleans Saints in the 1999 N.F.L. draft. Over his career, Williams would play for the Saints, Miami Dolphins, and Baltimore Ravens before he made a decision that would change his career and help shift the narrative of cannabis use by professional athletes. Send us a textNovember 5th, 2024. That's a day that most of us will not forget for one reason or another. That was election day here in America. This wasn't your usual election. To be honest, we haven't had a typical election in years. This cycle included a debate that ended with Democrats swapping out candidates, an assassination attempt, multiple Zoom calls, and coordinated efforts by both parties to make the other seem like the worst possible choice; the people have spoken. Donald J. Trump is our president again. So, we are heading into a second Trump administration. I wasn't expecting it, and neither were many others. Since we are here, let's talk about it. What does a new Trump administration mean for the black community? What about cannabis? What's the future of the plant under his admin? What about Amendment 3 in Florida and Governor Ron Desantis's role in helping it fail? There was a lot to unpack after November 5th. I spoke about these topics with the Executive chair for the Minority Cannabis Business Association, Mike Lomuto, Executive Director of the Marijuana Project, Chelsea Higgs-Wise, Kevin Ford Jr. with the Uplife Maryland and Budding Solutions Shanita Penny. Send us a textOne thing about covering cannabis is that you will hear some fantastic stories about how the plant helped someone find a new life. Danny Murr-Sloat has one of those types of stories. Dealing with a list of health problems, from chronic stomach pains to discovering he had thoracic outlet syndrome and a non-cancerous brain tumor, Danny found himself dependent on pills. By 2009, he was on 19 different prescription medications and falling deeper into depression. At the urging of his father, he got his first medical cannabis card in December of that year. After this plant-based treatment, Danny's life began to change rapidly. By mid-2010, he had lost 70 pounds and weaned himself off of pain medications completely. His newfound love for cannabis would eventually develop into a love for growing cannabis. By 2024, Danny had amassed 14 years of experience across the U.S. and Canada, developing his own proprietary genetics and consulting with some of the largest cultivations in the industry. We spoke with Danny about his transition from pills to the plant, what he would want to be remembered for, his work with AlpinStash Genetics, and more.
