We are back with Episode 720 as we recap the Nike Hoops Summit that took place this weekend in Portland! Cameron Boozer, Cayden Boozer, and Nik Khamenia (last name pronounced with a silent K) played on Team USA in the men's game, and each of them shined thoughout the week. The biggest star was Cameron Boozer, who lit up the stat sheet and dominated throughout the game. We get into each of the players and how they did and how excited we are to see them in Duke Blue. We also give some updates on Nate Ament's recruitment and some of the rumblings we've heard about what could be affecting his announcement. Of course, we also discuss Emilee Skinner's performance in the women's game and how she fits into Kara Lawson's squad for next year. After the break, we take a look at Vegas, where Duke is the early favorite to win it all in 2026. We discuss some of the other teams, including a couple in the ACC, who are getting some buzz. 2024-'25 Women's College Basketball Preview: The ACC and the Big East!

The ACC is stacked! How many of these teams will we see in Tampa for the women's Final Four in March? Let's break it down starting with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Coach Nielle Ivey's squad overcame injury after injury last year thanks to the play of star freshman Hannah Hidalgo. They're already a little banged up to start the season, but will the return of another star, Olivia Miles, be enough to offset that and put them over the hump?  Then, NC State did make the Final Four last year and bring back a lot of the key pieces that made that run possible. Have stars Aziaha James and Saniya Rivers improved their games enough to avenge last season's disappointment? And why should you start getting familiar with the name Zam Jones?  Kara Lawson's Duke team surprised some teams last year with its stifling defense. However, they had a tough time scoring points themselves. Have they solved that with the addition of Canadian sensation Toby Fournier?  I also touch on some other ACC teams you need to be paying attention to before moving on to the Big East, which means talking UConn. The Huskies are known for their winning ways, but it's been a while. If it's going to happen again, Paige Bueckers is going to have to lead the way. What does this mean for her legacy and how does this year's team compare to the previous squads she's had around her?  I finish up by touching on the rest of the Big East. I also give you some names to keep an eye on all season. Tap in and make sure you check out my other women's hoops previews!  Want more of what I'm doing? The AP has released its preseason polls and Ken Pomery also has his rankings up. We discuss them all on Episode 653! The AP released their men's preseason poll yesterday, and the Duke Blue Devils will begin the season as the #7 team in the country. Jason and Donald discuss whether that's a good spot for the Blue Devils and what the voters may have been looking for when assessing teams at the start of the year. Duke also has a loaded schedule, and it's represented pretty heavily in these rankings. Ken Pomeroy also released his preseason rankings yesterday, and Duke is much better according to KenPom: they check in at #2 there. Of course, we compare the difference between what the computers are seeing and what differs from what the college basketball writers who make up the AP poll are valuing. The ACC should be much better this season, but while they didn't have a ton in the top 25, there are several NCAA tournament caliber teams in the conference that Duke will face this year. After the break, we discuss the Duke Women, who appear at #11 in the first AP women's poll of the season. The ACC is loaded, and Duke is the 3rd highest ranked team in the conference. A lot of respect is being shown to Kara Lawson and her squad, and for good reason! We discuss the team, who they will see this season in a tough schedule, and how they could do. Finally, we're going to do it! After the exhibition game against Lincoln (PA) this weekend, Saturday at 4:00pm ET, we will be conducting a live show via Zoom, and all you listeners are invited! Danny White faces a big decision – his biggest decision, in fact, since he hired Josh Heupel in 2021. White is conducting a Lady Vols coaching search that will reshape the direction of the program. Kellie Harper maintained the program as an NCAA Tournament regular, but she repeatedly peaked in the Sweet 16, and the Lady Vols were eliminated in the second round this year. Recruiting momentum had stalled. White acted boldly by firing a coach who played for Summitt and who won 20 games this season. Now, he must be bold in his quest to hire just the fourth coach in program history. The last two Lady Vols coaches came from the Pat Summitt tree. Will White look outside the Lady Vols family for this hire? That seems likely. On today's episode, hosts Blake Toppmeyer, Cora Hall and John Adams weigh in on the Lady Vols search. First, they address the candidacy of Duke's Kara Lawson. Verdict: Lawson should not be viewed as the frontrunner. Then, each offers two swing-for-the-fences candidates, plus a fallback option. This is the best framework for handling life's challenges I have ever come across. It is a mental model for grit and perseverance. Since we are in March Madness season, It is fitting that it came from Kara Lawson, the Duke Women's Basketball Head Coach.   It is March Madness for those fans who get excited this time of year. How's your bracket doing? Mine's already toast the first weekend. The reason this time of year is so exciting for college basketball fans is the storylines and upsets. Lots of exciting upsets happen every year where the underdog miraculously beats the one, two, or three seed. The media focuses on these great stories and the proverbial Cinderella's. But what about the high -seeded losers of those games. Well, they get the chance to learn from these losses and these lessons transcend the court. Sports can be one of life's best educators. It's not just the winning, the hard work and the commitment that is needed. It's the losing and dealing with the adversity that comes with it. ESPN ran a story on Duke women's basketball coach, Kara Lawson, that caught my attention. Coach Lawson gave an impromptu speech to her team that luckily, someone recorded it. It's a 3 minute master class on mental resilience. Take a listen to this short clip. We all wait in life for things to get easier. Think in your own life if you waited for something to get easier. I just gotta get through this and then it'll be easy. I just gotta get through preseason and then it'll be OK. I've just gotta get through my junior year high school and then the classes are going to get easier. I've just gotta get to my spring and my senior year college is going to be easier. It's what we do. We wait for stuff to get easier. It will never get easier. What happens is you handle hard better. That's what happens. Most people think that it's going to get easier. Life is going to get easier. Basketball is going to get easier. School is going to get easier. It never gets easier. What happens is you become someone that handles hard stuff better. So that's a mental shift that has to occur in each of your brains. It has to. Because if you go around waiting for stuff to get easier in life, it's never gonna happen. Coach Larson's message of you become someone that handles hard stuff better is key. It's a mental shift. Don't wait for stuff to get easier. Losing is part of business, sports, and life. The key is how you handle it. Handle hard better. I hope you enjoyed this Saturday Note.

Many women block the results they want to see in their life due to their resistance to doing the hard things. They exchange advancements in careers, meaningful relationships, and health and longevity for the resistance of doing the uncomfortable thing. They postpone what they want in their lives waiting for the outcome to be easier. Naturally, this keeps them stuck. The meaningful things in life are never easy. The “easy” is not meaningful. For type 2 diabetes, the “easy” is taking meds, injecting insulin, eating the foods that you that keep you sick, and staying diabetic. That's easy. The hard part is living healthy. If living healthy was “easy,” it would not be elusive. EVERYBODY would be doing it. And it would be nothing to talk about. Meaningful endeavors are always going to be hard. Waiting for them to be easy means you will never do them. This episode discusses this topic as it was presented by Kara Lawson, the head coach of the women's basketball team at Duke University. She, aptly states, we need to get better at doing hard things. BOOM! She is spot on. Take a minute to check out her 3 minute clip and then listen to this episode of Reversing Diabetes with DelaneMD to hear how to apply this mindset to your type 2 diabetes!

#176 | The arrival fallacy and finding happiness where you are

friends on FIRE

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 20, 2022 44:07

What is the arrival fallacy? The arrival fallacy is the false assumption that once you reach a goal, you will experience lasting happiness. Many people become less happy after attaining something they have been striving towards. They were happier during the journey and less at the destination.Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar, a Harvard-trained expert on positive psychology, created the term itself. Dr. Ben-Shahar says, “the arrival fallacy is the illusion of reaching a destination or goal and realizing that the achievement doesn't make you as happy as you thought it would.” He then adds, “while most people can predict what might may them happy, they usually misjudge the preconceived intensity and overall duration of said happiness.”It makes sense that when you're on a journey to some big audacious goal, from a big project launch to becoming a doctor to having a child to early retirement, you believe at the end of it, you'll reach an enduring level of happiness. Once people arrive at a goal and realize the happiness doesn't last, they set another bigger, better goal, constantly seeking something they believe will arrive at lasting happiness. And it doesn't. That's the fallacy.People experiencing the arrival fallacy might also mask their unhappiness that increases after their goal is achieved. This concept is often called “escalation of commitment” and is a human behavior pattern where someone facing negative consequences from a decision, action, or situation continues the behavior instead of altering their course. They are escalating their commitment to some path, even as they learn it might not be the path for them.  People mistakenly confuse happiness with reaching an achievement. Happiness is a lifelong journey. It's not one achievement. It's not one place you arrive at and then stay at. The insight here is that happiness is a journey, not a destination.  Is the arrival fallacy affecting your happiness?  Maybe. Probably. If you've reached a goal and you're not feeling continued happiness from it, then you're likely experiencing the arrival fallacy. You may feel incredibly happy after achieving a big goal, and that's awesome and hopefully the case. We don't mean to imply that working hard towards a goal can't create happiness. The arrival fallacy and what we want to help you avoid is the idea that achieving that big goal will create enduring happiness. It will create a short-term dopamine hit of happiness, and you need to design a life where you get those dopamine hits on an ongoing basis. Happiness is a lifelong journey, and we feel happiness through our relationships, community, and daily life efforts. Most of the ways you can fight the arrival fallacy involve changing your mindset. Of course, mindset is the solution to so many things in life, so we're not surprised by this! What can you do to combat the arrival fallacy and improve your happiness?Identify the core issue you believe is making you less happy or unfilled, and make sure the goal indeed corrects that.Do your research. Know what you're getting into. Talk to other people.Adjust your expectations. Based on the research you've done, adjust your expectations. Go in “eyes wide open,” and stop telling yourself you'll be so happy when xyz happens. It's not an arrival fallacy if you know what you're getting into and you're not expecting immediate and lasting happiness from a career path. On the contrary, setting your expectations too high creates more unhappiness and can lead to depression and other types of malaise. Set smaller, more practical goals. Enjoy the efforts and journey you're taking on the path of something versus expecting the final arrival on the path to be what creates happiness.Appreciate that happiness is your life journey, not the destination. Envision your future. Ask yourself what you'll do after you reach a goal that will continue to make you happy?Create new goals. Setting goals and then starting the journey to achieve them can make you happy. But let's bring that back full circle, as you need to understand the arrival fallacy so you can set your expectations on how you'll feel as you accomplish these new goals.  Things take time. Be patient.Handle hard better. This is a super short and inspiring talk from Duke's women's basketball coach Kara Lawson. She says life will “never get easier; what happens is you handle hard better. What happens if you become someone who handles hard stuff better, not someone waiting for the easy.” Understanding the arrival fallacy helps you to handle hard better.  Top 3 takeaways:Happiness is a journey, not a destination. Invest in that journey and design your life to optimize what truly makes you happy.Money, or early retirement, won't magically make you happy, but it can give you the freedom to design a life filled with more of the things that do make you happy.Show References:Article: Arrival Fallacy: How to be happierDuke Basketball Coach Kara Lawson Video: Handle Hard BetterBook: Designing Your Life: How to Build a Well-Lived, Joyful LifeBook: The Pathless Path: Imagining a new story for work and lifeFriends on FIRE Episode #140 - Maggie's early retirement “bucket list” plans (part 4 of 5)Friends on FIRE Episode #158 - Control your lifestyle to find financial freedomFriends on FIRE Episode #144 - Inflation is out of control! Hour 1: Boomer & Gio are back after a long holiday weekend and Boomer walked into an ambush. After Boomer explained that situation, he remarked how much has happened since the guys had their last show together on Thursday. They start with Kevin Durant asking out of Brooklyn and Gio shares his extreme happiness when it comes to the Nets demise. He even called Boomer on the golf course to celebrate. Boomer says KD and Kyrie are quitters. Jerry is here for his first update of the morning and has more sound than the Mets had offense last night. They went 0-8 with RISP and lost 1-0 to the Reds. The Yankees also lost, 5-2 in Pittsburgh. Brendan Burke is filling in for John Sterling and Gio is a big fan. There are a lot of Nets rumors right now and nobody seems to know what will actually happen. Finally, Jerry has audio of WFAN's own Tiki Barber taking care of a rude caller. In the last segment of the hour, Boomer and Gio discuss the craziness of the NBA offseason and the Mets recent struggles. Hour 2: The 7am hour starts with the guys talking about a rare losing night for both baseball locals. The Braves are closing in on the Mets. They also discuss Kevin Durant's tarnished legacy and expectations/hopes for the rest of the NBA offseason. Jerry is back for another update and first, Gio wants to hear Jerry's review of producer Mike Fliegelman's wedding on Friday. Jerry gives two thumbs up, says all former WFAN employees are doing well, and has a 1930-news bulletin of the Mets loss in Cincinnati last night. Despite the loss, Max Scherzer returned and pitched great. The Yankees lost their series opener against the Pirates. A-Rod was a guest on an Audacy podcast and discussed Aaron Judge's future with the Yankees. In the final segment of the hour, Boomer shares some stories from the golf course. Hour 3: The 8am hour starts with an update on Mekhi Becton. Boomer is rooting for the young Jets tackle to find the motivation to be the player he's capable of being. Jerry returns and has sound from the Yankees loss and the crew speculates about Aaron Judge's contract and future. The Mets lost to the Reds but Max Scherzer returned and did not miss a beat. In the final segment of the hour, Boomer's mood picked up because he just received new golf clubs. Brett Favre is interested in NFL broadcasting and Gio says of course he is with the money being thrown around. Hour 4: The 9am hour starts with the guys reacting to the recent realignment in college sports with USC and UCLA heading to the Big Ten and how it will impact college sports moving forward. Jerry joins with his final update of the morning. The Mets and Yankees both lost to bad teams in the NL Central with the Mets falling in Cincinnati and the Yankees in Pittsburgh. Jerry, who likes going to baseball games, shares an inspiring speech from Duke women's basketball coach Kara Lawson and then gives us Moment of the Day. In the final segment of the show, Gio shares some workplace observations and a “dipwad” story. Plus, callers share their thoughts on retirement.
