Send us Fan MailSome Olympic controversies are loud for a week. Others echo for decades and make you question the whole idea of “the best athlete wins.” We sit down with pizza and a drink and build a Top 10 list of controversial United States Olympic moments, counting down the stories that still spark arguments at bars, in comment sections, and in living rooms during every Games. We hit the headline-makers, like Ryan Lochte's 2016 scandal, and the unforgettable Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan saga tied to the road to Lillehammer. Then we get into the moments that split public opinion right down the middle: Simone Biles stepping back in 2021 to protect her mental health, and Sha'Carri Richardson's marijuana ban, which opens up a real conversation about Olympic drug rules, federal vs state legality, and what “fairness” is actually supposed to mean. From there, we roll through judging and scoring chaos across eras, including Jordan Chiles and the podium-whiplash of a late inquiry, Marion Jones and the lasting stain of doping, the infamous 1972 USA vs USSR basketball finish, and why razor-thin timing debates like Michael Phelps' 2008 butterfly can still feel unsettled. We also talk about why judged sports like boxing can become lightning rods, with Roy Jones Jr's 1988 decision as the ultimate example of how a medal can be taken without ever being physically lost.If you like sports history, Olympic scandals, and honest debate, hit play, then subscribe and share this with a friend who loves the Games. This week, Richard Graves sits down with Lew Porchiazzo, Assistant Director for Strength & Conditioning for Olympic Sports at the University of Michigan. Lew brings more than 16 years of experience at one of the most successful athletic departments in the NCAA. His journey from a Division III football lineman to a leader shaping the development of athletes in softball, gymnastics, men's soccer and more, is filled with hard-earned lessons, humility, and an unwavering commitment to supporting people first. In this conversation, Lew dives into: • How to develop trust-driven relationships with athletes • What it truly takes to “raise the floor” of athletic performance • Why systems like Perch have changed the way Michigan trains • The realities of guiding young, ambitious athletes through strength, power, and conditioning programmes • The age-old question: How strong is strong enough? How fit is fit enough? Lew's philosophy blends evidence-based practice, a deep understanding of human behaviour, and a humility-first leadership style that resonates across the world of elite sport. In this episode, you will learn: * How Lew progressed from internships to a senior leadership role at Michigan—and what he learned along the way * Why treating athletes as humans first is central to unlocking performance * How Michigan individualises training across sports with vastly different demands * The process of integrating Perch velocity-based training and how it transformed athlete intent and coaching quality * How to use real-time data to adjust loads, manage fatigue, and protect athletes from themselves * When to stop chasing maximal strength and start focusing on raising the floor for performance * How to guide young athletes who want PBs every week without compromising long-term development * Why the most fulfilling moments in coaching come from watching athletes realise they're capable of more than they thought * Lew's leadership philosophy: vulnerability, authenticity, and serving others * The role of strength & conditioning in creating athletes who are not only powerful and robust—but durable and available About Lew Porchiazzo Lew Porchiazzo is the Assistant Director for Strength & Conditioning for Olympic Sports at the University of Michigan, where he has worked since 2009. He currently oversees physical development for a range of elite programmes including softball, women's gymnastics, and men's soccer. Lew began his career with internships at the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) and Baylor University, before joining Michigan as a graduate assistant. Across 16+ years he has become a central leader within the department, known for his athlete-first approach, relationship-driven coaching style, and commitment to developing staff and students with authenticity and humility. His expertise spans strength training, power development, velocity-based training, long-term athlete development, and programme design across sports with widely different physical demands. Beyond the weight room, Lew is passionate about helping athletes grow as people—and maintaining a love of movement and training long after their competitive days are over. He occasionally even officiates weddings… but you'll have to listen to the episode to hear that story. In episode 7's Living Leadership segment, I was joined by my long time friend, partner of our sport management program, and outstanding Trinity University alumnus (class of 2000), Terris 'T' Tiller. T is the Director of Alumni Career Engagement at Trinity and returned back home after a distinguished career on the U.S. Modern Pentathlon team and long-time team member at the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee. During our conversation Terris emphasizes the need for leaders to create spaces that allow others to be seen, spaces to know they are valued. He considers equity and inclusion work to be deeply embedded in his day-to-day life and sees it as a way to grow capacity for the entire organization, but he knows it starts with vulnerable leaders who seek to earn trust by being the first to trust. He models that vulnerability for us when he shares stories about his transition from life as a student to life as an Olympian and about the day he knew his competition days were over. Terris' concluding advice, to stay curious, couldn't be more powerful and perhaps never more important in our current climate. To conclude the episode, I lectured on chapter 15 of the 10th edition of Peter G. Northouse's "Leadership: Theory and Practice." During the segment, I discuss the Inclusive Leadership concepts described and designed by Donna Chrobot-Mason and Quinetta Roberson. In the lecture I mention this research article. If you want to know about the reason inclusion and inclusive leadership matters, please read "Gendered Leadership Networks in the NCAA: Analyzing Affiliation Networks of Senior Woman Administrators and Athletic Directors" (request full text here: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/323505935_Gendered_Leadership_Networks_in_the_NCAA_Analyzing_Affiliation_Networks_of_Senior_Woman_Administrators_and_Athletic_Directors) I hope you enjoy the episode. Drop me a note; I'd love to hear your thoughts so I can bring them into our class.

Kevin Bolger is an Olympic cross country skier for the United States. Kevin grew up skiing in Minocqua, WI where his family is originally from. However for the last decade he has spent the majority of his time living and competing in Norway and the rest of Scandinavia where the sport really thrives. Kevin started skiing in 3rd grade, but didn't start taking it seriously until he was in high school. After graduating he moved to Utah to train full time before making the US national team. Kevin's skills grew more and more until he earned his spot on the United States Olympic team and competed in the Beijing winter Olympics in 2022 where he placed in the world overall. Kevin's career hasn't been as glorious as some might assume however. Cross country skiing certainly has it's place in the midwest culture, but the sport is still very niche in the United States. That translates to not only a more difficult road to become internationally competitive, but it also makes it much harder for a professional skier like himself to make a sustainable living. In this episode we discuss growing up in the midwest, moving to Norway to ski with his heroes, fundraising to make his career possible, vlogging with his gold medalist girlfriend Maja Dahlqvist, competing in the Olympics during the pandemic, and much more.

I have no sympathy for you. I've trained athletes that are wheelchair-bound. I've trained athletes without a leg. Do you think it's difficult for me to train you while you're in a boot? Absolutely not. We can adapt… anything. We can make it work.” 7:05 “I don't really care what you know about the Xs and Os. We can teach that. I think anybody — if you go to any great place, you can be taught, if you're willing, and that's one thing that I want to look for. I want to look for somebody that has a growth mindset. I want to look for somebody that is great at creating relationships and maintaining relationships.” 15:20 “It's hard to just pack up your life on a whim with all that uncertainty. We like to think we're pretty tough in this field and we can put up with a lot, but we're still human.” 19:15 “I think perspective is everything, and how do we keep perspective? For me, a lot of it is not getting caught up in the ‘next.’ It's being caught up in the where I'm at right now. Be where your feet are, we tell athletes that all the time.” 34:10
